- We were fortunate enough to have the chance to sit down with 1st SFOD-D ("Delta Force") Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Tom Satterly and talk PTSD, his time in the Battle of Mogadishu ("Black Hawk Down"), Tom's personal struggle with suicide, and "All Secure Foundation"--the non profit support group for Special Forces Veterans.
20 years in the Unit is a long time. Guy seen operations from Mogadishu to Afghanistan Iraq and others we won't ever hear about
My Uncle was in desert storm, in Iraq before the war started. He was reconnaissance, ranger attached to the big red one. When he came back and he talked about what happened. He cried a lot.
I go through it every day. I went back in at 45 years old. I became a scout reconnaissance instructor. And went through 4 tours my last was as a combat advisor..i have lost friends and still am loosing friends it still fucks with me! Until i found help and her name is sadie my dog!! She saved my life!! I am a loner and live in the mountains and life i take it one day at a time..i miss it i miss the men the training the deployments..thanks for your sharing your experience ..i fell the same as you..thank you..

I first heard him on a podcast and his dry humor is HILARIOUS. Seems like a super-cool guy!
I could have taken the path to Special Ops with my enthusiasm for such a highly functioning group of people assembled within 1st S.F.G. that were my unit's maintenance clients. I was unexpectedly placed on orders to Panamá; which dashed any hopes of jump school and that SFAS pipline. I know the value of willingness to admit and a catharsis of emotion and thought. Sadly, I didn't trust the trained mental health personnel assigned at Fort Belvior many years after Fort Lewis and Panamá. The concept of a veteran with another with guidance was the only thing I desired. I hope Mr. Satterly and I might collaborate towards the betterment of his organization and create a climate of trust. Well done sir, Mr. Satterly. I have nothing but high regard for you.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Henry Caville based his American accent on Satterly in the Netflix film “sand castle”. Great interview could listen to his stories all die . He’s also featured on “this is war” podcast.

I admire that you vetted other organizations, sad that groups present themselves as a charity, but are parasites (and that's the kindest word I can find for them). I remember scurrying around Belfast on 'Black Friday', bodies in the street, smoke and fire everywhere....kind of a personal apocalypse, which I am sure you have had (you mention the pain of taking a life)...I can't imagine the pain that must cause to a decent human being.

Tom I have just listened to your book on Audible. It was a very moving listen and struck a chord much more so than many military memoirs. Our military give us so much and carry on fighting long after they put their rifle down. I hope your relationship with your son is better and that the combined alimony isn't killing you. You and Larry Vickers should do a show together!!! Cheers from the UK.

I recently finished reading Jason Fox's book, 'Battle Scars.'
Jason was a former British Royal Marine commando who then served 10 years with the SBS (Special Boat Service) a Tier 1 Special Forces unit.
His book was mostly about the struggles he faced late in his career. The stuff said in this interview was exactly like some of the things he described. He felt broken and didn't want to admit he was struggling then when he finally did he was discharged from the military which left him more angry. That and the struggle to adjust to civilian life and find something that gave him purpose left him feeling suicidal too.
Jason is now a TV personality in the show SAS: Who Dares Wins, alongside other former elite soldiers. He also works with struggling veterans through his charity Rock2Recovery. His book is well worth a read. 👍

I’ve lost many friends over the years. Some who joined to get away from previous lives. They excelled in their new family - the military. Then it came time to walk out the gates for the last time. They were that scared 18 year old again at 38 with no one to turn to who’d lost their family again and their brothers

I have Total Respect for this man. This man speaks and carries his self so well. There’s no way a civilian could grasp how incredible of a life this man had trudged. I wish this man the best of days.
If that ring has the The Unit's logo on it as it appears to that's a badass ring! People see that logo & they just know!
do normal soldiers know when seals or delta force come in? like what allows soldiers to differentiate them? Also, how do normal soldiers treat comanndos?
Seals stay near water and usually eat only seafood in the galleys. They smell like tuna so they are not hard to miss. Delta carry a lot of plumbing gear for some reason and like to reference hardware stores when they talk
Honest answer is yes. Equipment and uniform will differentiate them. They have the gucci gear. Treat them like you’re supposed to treat everyone else.
If they aren’t doing the military thing, you may not know.

He seems like a chill guy but something about the stories on that night just isn’t adding up. Other accounts on Somalia were also pretty vague (focusing too much on emotion) without the exact details/logistics being specified enough. I wonder what really happened.
That is an immense amount of death in just 18 hours!
