Gimikwenden ina Do you remember?

Nimiseyag nisayeyah Our sisters and brothers?
Do you hear them calling you?
In this musical, Tommy and Julia, the children of an Oji-Cree family, are sent to a residential school in Northern Ontario. As the school tries to “take the Indian out of the child,” Tommy struggles not to forget his language, his family, his culture. This song is written in the Ojibwe language. The Ojibwe are part of the Anishinaabeg group of indigenous peoples, the 2nd largest in North America. Territories extend from Quebec around the Great Lakes into the US and to Manitoba. Ojibwe people speak Anishinaabemowin language, which is still widely spoken today, but is in decline.
Corey Payette is proud of his Oji-Cree heritage from Northern Ontario and works as a playwright, actor, composer, and director across Canada. He is the Artistic Director of Urban Ink (Vancouver), and wrote the book/music/lyrics and directed Children of God.
I got a chance to sing the solo at the chan for BCMEA. Such a great piece to perform
I'm back here again, drawn to hear this piece, as we learn of the remains of 215 children found at the former Indian Residential School in Kamloops. There are no words...
Such a gorgeous song. Love Corey's solo at the beginning then bringing in the choir, guitar, and drums. Took me back to the 3 times and counting that I have seen Children of God. Best musical ever. Should be seen by every Canadian. This song brings angel bumps.
We agree! It's such an incredibly moving work.
Something to make memories for all people--we must learn, we must understand and we must accept what we have done. Very moving.
Such a beautiful, heartbreaking, exquisite piece of music...
We agree, Andrea. It's such an honour for us to perform it.
Just beautiful - Thank You so much for composing this, Corey Payette, and Thank You to you, and the wonderful choir, for performing this so well!
It's a wonderful work!
magnifique.
