actually its both: you have to work at least 100 hours a day if you want to build a successful business and staying focused but at the same time you have to be smart and open to new ideas and more creativity to build in the long term, that is at least what most successful entrepreneurs did (Steve jobs, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos...).
Honestly, once you try GoPro you will think "how did we live without it until now?" - yet not as complicated nor complex idea, but very very very good quality with excellent execution during 10 years. Love it!
Its not very often i can get behind a company or product that i really like but Gopro is an exception, this really is a revolutionary product, because it has opened a whole new market where existing company's are now frantically trying to keep up. Its a backpackers best friend, and is there when you need it to capture the best moments in your life that you can look back on and cherish forever, theve been dropped out of planes and space, and been lost at sea for 3 months and there still working!! Plus its so simple lol we really had to wait till like 2014 for a camera stuck to a stick yet its so versatile and forces creativity, fucking love GoPro!!
I agree , i just got my first Gopro ( a hero 4 silver) , i think more people still go for Gopro over the competition because of the passion for their cameras that Gopro have
His father was managing a Venture firm. That is why he got some great funding and marketing connections. It was just a camera with a lill screen not a new invention. His connection helped him the most I believe, which is always the key.
Man deserves the money he's made. Absolutely love my GoPro, and the concept behind it. Congratulations to someone who took a chance and became what he is through effort, not inheritance.
Well said Nicholas and it's no wonder why you are a CEO of a great company today. Purchased my first GoPro for Black Friday 2013 and will be going snowboarding, surfing and beginning to record the best parts (ACTION!) of the next 10 years of my life. Thanks for making GoPro a great product that I can stand behind and say I'm proud owner.
You guys have my heart and my wallet. Thank you for letting me share "My Experience" with others. Some things cannot be put into words, but they make one killer video.
This is being a true entrepreneur. Looking at a world that's satisfied with what it has and then introducing something totally new that people never thought of that's now virtually a necessity. And the application is so immensely broad this is the only product I can think of where the sky is the limit
I remember when I was like 8 in a surf shop on vacation staring at the GoPro in the glass case thinking how awesome it is, and now I have a Hero 3 watching this like "Thank You!"
Just got a black and having all the typical problems with battery, no turn on lock ups, micro sd errors etc etc and was wondering if its just the Black Editions or if all the Pro3s have these problems and how reliable the older generations were?
After losing 4 million dollars...most people would fade into obscurity...Nicholas had a vision and pursued it. Tenacity, and dedication to achieve a dream, is what all successful people have in common .Nicholas you are well deserving of your success....
Yeah capitalism REALLY SUCKS, SIIIIIIIKE. This is why Capitalism and American innovation is the greatest on the planet. This is just a regular guy who had a great idea that filled a problem, solved that problem and made a great product that EVERYONE LOVES. Now from 1 guy comes a totally new industry with thousands of new jobs for engineers, designers, marketers, manufacturers, truck drivers and more. This is why capitalism and innovation is WONDERFUL and why socialism could never in a million years create this.
Wow, that was a lot of huff and puff from you. This 'regular guy' designer is having the product made in CHINA not America, so guess what, this 'new industry' isn't doing the American economy any good, we are simply sending our money overseas (as usual)
comfortouch so what if he is having it made in China. EVERYTHING IS MADE IN CHINA. And that does not negate the thousands of AMERICAN JOBS still created by his company and invention. Lets do a light extrapolation. Even though "Manufacturing is done in China, American home grown jobs would be, 1. In house industrial designers to design every generation of the physical product and accessories 2. In house engineers to design the electronic video components that give GoPro's that special amazing video look they have. 3. In house Software Engineers that design the software responsible for running the camera operating system and mobile applications that control the camera 4. In house graphic designers that design all boxes, collateral, marketing material, advertisement kiosks and stands for stores, 5. In house web designers and developers who design the website and functionality 6. Marketing managers who are responsible for the marketing of the product to emerging markets 7. Business managers in charge of creating and developing new business relationships with partners or new partners with companies like "Red Bull" for example. 8. Truck Drivers - responsible for shipping products throughout the USA and in other countries 9. Video Professionals responsible for shooting, and editing online videos for the company And on and on and on, not even taking into account the jobs created by other companies who use the product to further their business growth, like new artists and creatives or students who use GoPro's in their own creative work that help them advance their careers, ect ect ect ect ect.. I can go on and on but like I said this is a "Light Extrapolation" People like you who think small and are not very creative can only generate negativity and have 0 vision and total inability to see possibilities. Also by touting the same old bullshit line about CHINA shows you know very little about what goes into producing a product and what can be produced by using a product.
Your #1-5 all are Chinese, not American jobs. The rest of those infrastructures are already in place and he hasn't added much to them at all, maybe one or two jobs. #9 - He hasn't added a single 'video professional', he has simply replaced the existing equipment that they used to use; AND he has taken away jobs in this market because any bozo can now do the same 'job' for free. You're full of fluff and full of shit if you think the 7 people he employs in the US will boost the economy here at all. You really need to take a course in economics, starting with simple math.
This guy is one of the best C.E.O's in the world. He isn't up his own ass like most heads of major brands and he is in contact with his customers by using and demonstrating his product every day. I still have my GoPro Hero 960, and it works without any glitches after about 1 year now of non stop use with it. I will NEVER go back to any other camera company because they are so well built and robust for there price. Looking to get my new Hero 3 Black ASAP now. GoPro FOR LIFE !!!
Good for him, the GoPro is a awesome little cam. Rivers are rocking in New England, and my Hero3 (HumbleOutdoors w/free 32GBSD) is mounted on my kayak. The footage so far has been spectacular.
Sick Nick. I skied there once before there were lifts with a heli with Warren Miller, wish I had a GoPro then. I did have first your wrist model I got at Aqua Surf Shop on Sloat took it to Costa that week and got my first water shots. I used the next one with Holmes and Plake on an ABC Nightline story and on all my movies. I still maintain i'm the first to put my Gopro in my kite.
Fair play to him for having a great idea and the vision to move it forward. Passion, determination and a good attitude to business will get you far. I just bought a Hero 3+ Black.
Back in 2000 I mounted my Sony DCR-TRV10 into a small Pelican case, cut out a hole, and added a removable wide angle lense. I installed Manfroto clips to the case so I could attach the whole thing to roll bars of off-road trucks. Worked like a charm. This was 2 years before this guy thought of his idea. If only I had the vision back then. I am so fucking pissed right now. LOL
Awesome. What a great story of "rags to riches" through dedication and hard work. Kudos to you man and thanks for the inspirations that came along with this interview.
Perfect example of how an awesome product name (short and easy to remember) coupled with an excellent marketing campaign can make you millions. The product quality itself does not have to be stellar. It has to be "good enough" for the masses!
Well, that story was actually motivating. I could inspire myself as I am one like him with a lot of ideas. Came here for a review of the product, Now I'm surely gonna buy this HERO.
Another company selling stuff made in China to a bunch of consumers. ...I can't fault them though, because it was the customers dreams and desires that made this guy wealthy. He just marketed it really, really well.
Thing is, its not just an other Chinese product. Its a high quality, ultra robust camera for a reasonable price. Its also thanks to GoPro that other companies even started considering developing POV devices.
anton shumin Well said. Contrary to popular belief, China is putting out very high quality products. In fact, this macbook I am typing on as well as the Iphone we all love is "designed in California and assembled in China (or Taiwan)"
GoPro sells dreams. The average person can never expect to make videos like their promotional videos. GoPros success is entirely derived from its multi million dollar advertising and product placement. I own the Black plus and the Sony AS30. Bottom line, the Sony produces better video. Sony's SteadyShot image stabilization. It doesn't get any better. All video cameras have "rolling shutter" artifacts. GoPro avoids this by tailoring their videos. Do as I did, buy 3 different cameras, then make a decision. (thank god for Amazon)
As an average human I would love to have the skill to make such difficult maneuvers look easy as pro athletes. Though this little device captures what people want to capture in a photo which is closest to our field of vision than any other point and shoot camera I've owned before. I own my second gopro and maybe only 10% of images came out the way I wanted them to (spray and pray mentality), but the truth is the camera does a very good job when it comes to light balance and has functions I haven't seen in other cameras such as time-lapse, fisheye lens, water/damage proof case, and 120fps video (of course in the evening most of this is not as responsive) nevertheless if you find your self in a situation where everything around you is incredible this little shit will capture it. * make sure to practice/test how far the point of interest is from the camera vs how far you want it to appear in the frame of the photo
intercitty Great comments, thanks. I guess my frustration is from their misleading videos and the cost. Perhaps I had a bad GoPro and should of requested a new one within 30 days. However while on hold the 2nd time for more than 20 minutes I gave up and sent it back to them. In my book customer service is pretty darn important.

I found the comment about going surfing around Australia for 5 months for inspiration after going bust most interesting. How many people have such options? Regardless, love the product and it's great to see them do so well.
Lovin my new GPH3 silver. As someone who jury-rigged a Sony V5 8mm camcorder to my bike forks back in '86 (and got predictably mediocre results) - several decades later I finally have a camera that does what I wanted to back in the 80s. Now I just need to get this 50-yr-old body to do what I could do in my 20s, lol.
Nicholas Woodman If you happen to read this, I have a hero 3+ and i have to say it is the best thing i have every got. You Sir deserve every penny you have * high fucking five *
i love my gopro hero three it has helped me capture some moments with events like severe storms and ham radio events. my mission is to get the message out and my Gopro helps me do that, thank u NICK
I got a Go Pro Hero 3 white edition for christmas, but I always wanted to have the Black edition +. Is it worth returning it and get the one that I really wanted? i haven't opened it yet, receipt still attached, so I shouldn't have problem returning it. Walmart is where it was bought by the way...
Thanks for your input. Santa was nice enough this year...returned it the other day, got what I really wanted (black+) at BestBuy. Wow, the price doubled from white to black+. Can't wait for summer so I'll get to use/experiment it more. This old kid got a new toy :-)
You don't have to mount it at all if all you are trying to do is capture 1st person view experiences, you may be right in the water proof department but who know's maybe they will produce them water proof in the near future
respect..this man actually worked hard for what he has..
He didn't work hard he worked smart
He worked hard AND smart.
Rich Handsome i work it when im hard
Someone like this comment twice to make the amount of like in each comment keep doubling.

I agree , i just got my first Gopro ( a hero 4 silver) , i think more people still go for Gopro over the competition because of the passion for their cameras that Gopro have
Mason Jordan not only that, but gopro is really good quality. i never have problems with my gopros. never.
stop recording and just enjoy it

Canon. Made in the awesome nation of Japan!
its not the software is the sd card. get the sandisk extreme and it should work right
Thank you Nicholas Woodman for developing & making the Gopro
i own a gopro and never thought much of them..but i just recently wrote a small report on them and they are truly fascinating cameras

Just bought a GoPro Black yesterday, can's wait to get started, truly motivational vid. :)
he got the quality of a down to earth person.
Thumbs up
Wow, very inspirational video. Completely filled with epicness and great editing!
So impressed with this company, they have gone so far it amazes me!!
6:49 they used my footage! Putting Forbes contributor on my resume now.
That's a good started from the bottom now he's here story lol
Thank you Nicholas Woodman for Gopro. What a great idea!
i hate the music for this, but i love the story! also the insight he provides to budding entrepreneurs (it takes time, go to trade shows, etc)
and it's a great product! fills a niche, even creates one!
When the camera is in a Water Proof housing the sound Vibrates the entire case causing the sound to be shitty. With the Skeleton for sound backdoor and even the frame, the audio is exceptional compared to replay or contour, and even the hero 2
Theyre getting fan'n lazy over at GoPro, the new black edition has some annoying flukes. It freezes and it doesn't quite feel like a step up. The competition is getting ahead.
Great story...very inspiring! Congrats!
Amazing!
I think the GoPro HERO videocameras are awesome!
And maybe in the next generations of GoPro videocameras, they will be incredibely better.
Congrats for coming up with a fantastic product/idea.
That man is just awesome... and had one of the best ideas in our fast evolving world... There are so many awesome persons live out their awesome ideas and make our world richer in positive experiences and brilliance... if I could I afford one... I would try to be one of them
Weird but I am happy for Nicholas and his success, reminds me of Eastman/Kodak in the early years. He is not your typical snobbish I'm better than you like some other one we all know of. I use my GoPro on my motorcycle and it is awesome...and really is water proof. My wishes for the GoPro crew continued success in years to come.
Wow mate, that is extreme. I hope you had your GoPro with you to capture all that radness?
Nic your camera is awesome, love it. Congratulations on your success.
How much do'es the newest go pro camera cost?? :-)
inspiring story bro..ur success is well deserved
I love my GoPro baby and I am so grateful to those people!
I just got a Hero 3 Black. Works great but before the late april 2013 firmware, it was a nightmare as far as I understand.
If my hero 2 doesn't get working soon from his support team it will be a drift HD ghost for me. To much shit going wrong now that he's growing richer

What song is played on this documentary?... I think it is pretty cool and want to download it... Anybody know it?
Powerful little camera. Thanks GoPro.
I found the comment about going surfing around Australia for 5 months for inspiration after going bust most interesting. How many people have such options? Regardless, love the product and it's great to see them do so well.
100x more epic if it is filmed with GoPro.
wonder how many years before you can have one fitted behind the retina?

Great Product... Great Story !! Well done Nick
You earned my money mate. Fair play to you. Keep on !!!
More diversity in the soundtrack would of been nice. But it is an overall good, inspiring video.
Cool beans. He traveled the world surfing, I like that. He's got great life priorities. Good ideas spring to life from your passions, yep.
Thanks Nicholas Woodman. Now i can capture everything with my Gopro hero 3.

Amazing life story

Hey guys, I film various shorts via GoPro. Any input on how to get better footage? Thanks
what ski mountain is that there in the beginning?
Tell us where the product is made, how many US employees?
Yeah I had to stop using my black. Now I use a Drift Ghost. Sorry GoPro but get your stuff together.
This old kid got a new toy :-)
a better xd card can help and how you upload it to your computer changes the quality
Good on him awesome product will have to get one before I do some travelling
The GoPro just flat out ROCKS!
What is the name of the cool song or music in the background?
You don't have to mount it at all if all you are trying to do is capture 1st person view experiences, you may be right in the water proof department but who know's maybe they will produce them water proof in the near future
Great video, and so glad to have such a revolutionary product.
GoPro... what a great and super innovative company...
The GoPro is one tough little cam. My Hero3 (HumbleOutdoors w/free 32GB SD) is capturing all kinds of river action.
I got one yesterday and it has 4K cine. This is max.
