There is no fundamental problem with the libertarian view of liberty, rather it is the absence of associated responsibility where the liability begins. Liberty without social responsibility, not liberty itself.
So many people are confused, not knowing the difference between right and wrong and thus make poor choices...choosing what they see others doing...instead of choosing the intrinsic good.

Take a look at my other comments on here, and it's clear that I believe DT is extremely dangerous in his policies. Sorry for the confusion 😕
Am I the only one who hears a definition of current conservatism in this belief that we can never be virtuous, and so the state needs to restrain us..?
Yes, you are. Conservatism is that belief that the state is an obstacle, albeit sometimes necessary for the smooth operation of the world, it's not something to depend on. It impedes ingenuity, charity, progress, reason, peace and prosperity.
Dean, conservatives would prefer the least amount of government necessary to ensure peace and prosperity within a nation. Conservatives like to rely on God as the penultimate to obtaining and exercising virtue🙌🏻
@@danielleprovenzale6805 More like "lets cut the Medicare and Social Security to "incentivize" people do to charity. If nobody helps the needy, oh we..." Give me a break. It is 2024 not the Middle Ages.
Well this means that the modern view of liberty is the equivalent of licence. Hobbs was wrong because if we do not develop self discipline we cannot be free. But we must have the support of a civilized society governed by the rule of law with the notion of fairness and justice for ALL! This would mean we are then equal before AND under the law with not just formal rights but substantive - ie not oppressive! External control on the human person cannot ever be fair and just because as you say it is oppressive . A civilized society means we are not governed by a tyrant. Unfortunately we live in a time where Plato's view of a democracy is coming true and descending into tyranny. If the tyrant has absolute power to dissolve even the checks and balances built into the concept and practice of the rule of law in a democracy, there is only licence and never real liberty to be self governing. For me from the perspective of faith, it comes down to the difference between "thou shalt nots" and the singular "though shalt "... A social structure based on Love is one that requires governing authorities to understand the difference not just between liberty and licence but Love and its absence.
Diane, you are right in saying that if we do not develop self-discipline, we cannot be free. Discipline is the root of discipleship, and therefore, unless we have a belief in an ultimate God, then it is very hard to exercise any self restraint except for those imposed by the government. However, as you say, tyrants want to impose their own laws for their benefit. We did not see this happen when Trump was elected; the economy, our nation & the world were not in the chaos we have descended to with the Biden /Harris administration. This administration on the other hand has because of their own selfish desires caused our economy to fail, caused our country to become more divisive and has jeopardized world peace. Yes, love should be the driving force behind all that we do. God is love. love is willing the good of the other, even to the point of self sacrifice, as Jesus showed us. It’s not about the rights our constitution gave us or purports to give to us. 🕊️
Thank you for this discussion, thought provoking. We need to ask ourselves am I practicing Catholic ( or other denominations or other religions) or not? How active are we in general society’s for common good, in politics, in business, in culture, and so on. If we are not practicing, we cannot positively engage in society’s common good nor be authentic contributors to common good. We are secular society and in secular society only practising Christians (Catholics or others) can positively be effective in society. New conversion and evangelisation is required or we will easily fall and follow tyrants to detriment of all (atheists not excluded).
@josipstipic8000 the only societal issue I ever see Catholics/Christians making a fuss about is abortion. That's fine, but where's the outcry on all the other issues that matter to the common good? I see no one speaking up when policies are made that harm society's most vulnerable citizens - the poor, the disabled, the unwanted children already in the system, the widows and the elderly , etc. When deeply conservative policies get made that cut safety net programs and welfare (SS, disability, SNAP, free school lunches, LI-HEAP for heating assistance, Medicare/Medicaid, etc) suddenly everyone becomes very quiet. We have many precious souls that are truly suffering - facing homelessness, going without medicine and dying, not having enough nutritious food to eat so they get sick, no heat or AC - yet where are the multitudes of Christians/Catholics who should be advocating for them?
I've across this video just now. I hope Bishop Barron and those priests who advised Catholics that they had to vote for Trump, I hope they will now take responsibility for the chaos and suffering that a Trump presidency will inflict on not just the American people but to those of us who live outside the US!
I don't think the Pope likes Trump from just his facial expressions in the past, but couldn't say not too vote for him. He left it up to conscience and it's sad how a cult like leader can suck people into his insanity. BUT the democrats didn't talk about how prices wont lower, how tariffs wont work. They are failing too in communication
Thank you. I would love to hear more about what the classical Christian definition of liberty is. I know what this is and it’s not that, so is there something that will explain the classical Christian way of liberty or thoroughly please?
LIBERALISM... freedom from discipline of one's own human will. (aka being one's own god . . . reference eve and adam) rock and roll...no discipline to the 'dance steps.' Change of 'heart' of mankind (humanity) IS A TRANSFORMATION of SOUL. RELIGION is the means to 'doing as HE said to do BY FAITH IN HE who is God, and in such obedience based on FAITH...His GRACED PRESENCE increases within. (a slow and steady transformation, sometimes not perceptible even to the one being slowly changed IN SOUL)
Trump's election is almost relevant to the trajectory as it would have also been with Harris. The identity transhumanist, transgenderist liberal politics was doomed before it has even started. Trump was elected as a reaction against this craziness but not as an aspiration toward a better future.
Trump talked about a former golfer's p**is size, simulated a sex act on a faulty microphone at a rally last week, insults and belittles others constantly with the most profane and unholy expressions possible, lies constantly and is the antithesis of a moral leader. I am supposed to overlook that because somehow being "liberal" is worse than that? When did modern political monikers become the measurement for righteousness and truth? Character, integrity, and the rule of law matters. Righteousness matters. I would not want my sons or my grandsons to emulate Trump. I wish you would have talked about what a true moral leader looks like. It is not Trump.
horse-sh... Trump is authentic, and people relate to him. He also tries to find solutions to problems, and is willing to make decisions as to which is the best solution. Kamala Harris offered no solutions, and refused to make any decisions. Even her policy was a refusal to make a decision

Religion, Philosophy, and Psychology all advised The Middle Way of negotiating a path between opposites. Both Liberalism and Conservatism are both extremes. We should, as advised, stay between opposites not being bound to one or the other. Conservatism can be static and prevent movement or being in sync with the times. The ideal is to, as advised, follow the Middle Way while holding on the universal truths and values. What they do not discuss here is the danger of extremes either of liberalism or conservatism. One is an excess of freedom, the other is an inhibition of movement with the times, which realistically has to be done and accomplished. We cannot live in accordance with the worldview of the Middle Ages as we are now in a modern age and things are much different. This is not addressed here, it would be expected that these two commentators would know the religious and philosophical and psychological perspectives on The Middle Way. They apparently do not so this discussion is unbalanced, concentrating on excessive freedom and the problems of that. They do not talk about excessive restraint or absent of freedom as also a problem. Parents have to let go as their children become adults and trust that the values they instilled will be lived out when they are free of parental restraint and oversight in their adult lives. The ultimate good has to come under the function of reason as what may be good in one situation may be bad in another. There are good and bad conflicts; to protect the innocent; good, or to gain power; bad. Good and bad are relative to the situation. Dogma is a guide it is not applicable to all situations. To pretend that it is, is unrealistic.
I feel like so much of the bad side of conservatism gets ignored. I hear no one speak about how the least of our society (the poor, disabled, elderly, widows, children) get hurt by extreme conservative policies that take away the programs they depend on to survive.
@@spinstercatlady Right on and the whole world is following this ideology without critically thinking about anything but wealth power and status, when electing cons to do the job of 'governing '. !.

God doesn't like people treating the least of His children (poor, disabled, elderly, etc) bad,y either. As Barron Bishop put it, there are those who want to get rid of programs that help them survive in hopes that they will just "shuffle off" bc they are unable to maximize wealth. The lives of the unborn matter, but so do the lives of those struggling to barely survive.

This is a very interesting philosophical conservation, but in terms of politics, it is isn't helpful. Conversations like this cause people to turn to the right politically and aided Trump in winning the election. I'd like to know just which Christian virtues you have seen him display? He, himself, has said, "I can do whatever I want, as president." His promised actions do not conform in any way to the teachings of Christ, as he prepares to take away all safety nets, to kick out millions of people, just because they aren't white, and throw his opponents into jail, just because they oppose him. At least the liberals being bashed here, agree to feed the hungry and care for the sick, and have been doing so all along. I am a Catholic and I believe in the teachings of the church. I believe the liberal politicians are much closer to them than the followers of Trump. We shall see.

Liberalism works for religious people. The failure is a religious failure, not a political one.
Bullshit, really. Is 'religious people' Satanists, for example ?
This is from the Supreme Court about people like you
"This would be introducing a new element into criminal law. Laws are made for the government of actions, and while they cannot interfere with mere religious belief and opinions, they may with practices. Suppose one believed that human sacrifices were a necessary part of religious worship, would it be seriously contended that the civil government under which he lived could not interfere to prevent a sacrifice? Or if a wife religiously believed it was her duty to burn herself upon the funeral pile of her dead husband, would it be beyond the power of the civil government to prevent her carrying her belief into practice?"
have no idea what you mean....You can't serve two masters --- just common sense --- and if you can't say we have God-given rights and government exists to protect those rights.
You can't say anything. Bigamy and slavery died because religous folk saw the religious meaning of the FOUNDERS.

@@deniseb-h8u my comment was definitely not about DT (although that's probably who the original comment was about), I was referring to Biden since he overturned Trump's evil plan to reclassify folks on disability so that they'd have to be reviewed every 6 months as well as his nightmarish immigration policies and policies that harm the most vulnerable of our citizens by cutting or severely reducing funding to social safety net programs.

Amazingly put
THis is the same lousy road that Rod Dreher started on with his 'leave the world' advice, something that delivers the most vulnerable to the wolves.
Could you please clarify. Are you in the military, working overseas or... ?
I know the Pope is praying. He sees him as he is
Wow.
Thank you. I would love to hear more about what the classical Christian definition of liberty is. I know what this is and it’s not that, so is there something that will explain the classical Christian way of liberty or thoroughly please?
"Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven" Satan, Milton's Paradise Lost. Is it?
So the Trump movement that won, and Trump so-called Catholics, what can we do to draw them away from their Hobbseean cliff?
You actually know that because?
@@josephcioppa1943people THINK they relate to him, but I reality he is a multi multi millionaire who wouldn't spit on the average man if he wasn't in politics. Trump and the average man have nothing in common. Typical parasocial relationship.

Christians no more understand what is Prophecy & its revelations Philosophy become Prophecy
This man is totally left, pointing at the liberals, he is on it just not clearly showing who is thinking this way at 16:44
Where was the prophetic insight?
I suppose that is why God er nature gave us intelligence to discern for ourselves if we will?
I feel like so much of the bad side of conservatism gets ignored. I hear no one speak about how the least of our society (the poor, disabled, elderly, widows, children) get hurt by extreme conservative policies that take away the programs they depend on to survive.
Right it is called a constitution with checks and balances to absolute power and tyranny.

He, himself, has said, "I can do whatever I want, as president."
