  • PLEASE NOTE:
This video contains a lens product that the manufacturer has loaned to me for a test duration.
As a professional shooter I often get asked to appraise equipment or get offered gear in return for reviews. Me being me I make it very clear to all that if I find something that doesn’t work with me or I simply feel it to be under par then I will say that. I am not easily bought. That said I recently received an offer from the new lens company Irix asking if I wanted to try their new 15mm f2.4 completely manual Super Wide Angle prime lens. Who am I to say “No”? Seeing as this glass is designed specifically to cater to the specific demands of high megapixel count, full frame sensors and seeing as I’m currently shooting with the 50.6MP Canon offering, the EOS5DSr how could I pass on such an offer?
This short video is an outline of my first impressions of the lens and the features that it offers. Along with the lens and camera I was shooting a motion time-lapse using the Kessler Crane Second Shooter Plus on a TLS Rail, again from Kessler Crane. I guess it’s also just personal taste but I also don’t choose to attach any lanyards or neck straps to my cameras, I just don’t like the fact that they can easily blow in the wind and potentially flap in front of a lens etc. They only take a few minutes to put into place so I take them off whenever I head out for time-lapse shoots.
Settings wise I ramp manually with the ISO and Shutter during the shoots. There are smart apps and hardware out there to simplify that process but I prefer to at least, as a photographer, have some contact with the camera when I’m shooting. It’s too simple to leave it to the machines. That said I use computers for post processing and rely specifically on Adobe Lightroom and LRTimelapse Pro plugin for time-lapse editing. I will be looking to create some editing videos down the line for the new workflow on the EOS5DSr but there are some other time-lapse videos in my collection that address time-lapse editing etc from my EOS5D3 days.
Camera settings started out at ISO100 at f8 for 1/80th and ended up at ISO400 f8 for 2sec. White Balance wise in the Urban setting I normally select Kelvin and dial that to a 3300 temperature setting. Shooting fully manual, one shot RAW with no additional sharpening or contrast. I tend to shoot +2/3OEV to keep the detail in the highlights. I just find it easier that way add LUTS in post if needed, but that’s another ballgame.
Please feel free to make comments and ask questions below. I try to respond as soon as I can so sheers.
    Mark.

Nice looking lens! The timelapse is superb - only ever dabbled with timelapse and was not happy with the results at all.

Takes a while to get the workflow down, my first were atrocious but gotta stick with it. A large part in digital is the editing so it's sweet to shoot RAW and have that massive leeway to get details back from some clips that would otherwise be washed out. Appreciate the comments mate. Be well.

Cheers - I always seem to have a problem with flicker. Must try harder!! :)

Flicker is an issue across the board but there are now editing solutions for that. Not sure how long ago you gave it a try but these newer softwares are pretty awesome. You should see the luminosity and exposure graphs from my raw files of a complete timelapse sequence before it's edited, more peaks and troughs than a manic depressive's mood swings...

Do you ramp first your shutter and then iso, right? Have you ever ramped your aperture or used nd filter so that way you can make relative long exposures during day time to blurry people and smooth water? Thanks for your vids, they are great and I learn with every of them.
    Greetings

I don't think it matters the order of your ramp, ISO or shutter. Some people prefer to get to their ISO ceiling faster and then work simply on the shutter and vice versa, Personally I alternate between the two, I will notch the ISO until +2/3OEV and then use shutter to get back to metering sweet spot. I have shot ND in the middle of the day before but I'm also a personal habit and tend to avoid 10am - 2PM shooting window as the shadows are just too harsh. Cheers for the comment, appreciated.

Have you tried the irix 11mm f4?

Nope, I just got the Laowa 12mm f2.8 Zero Distortion so I will hope to put a video together about that one soon. Some stunning results thus far.

    hello what's the slider's brand please ?

    • @seawildearth
      @seawildearth  3 роки тому +1

Hi there. The slider used here is the Second Shooter Pro from Kessler Crane. It's quite an old slider now so not sure if Kessler still make it. But it is solid and still works great for me so I keep on using it.

Hi I've just bought this Irix 15 f2.4 Lens but I'm not too happy with it I seem to have difficulty with sharpness on the wider apertures in actual fact it doesn't seem to get anything nearshore until F 11 even then it's not brilliant, I have a Canon 6D Full frame

Are you magnifying prefocus with Live View? I have that set on my 5DSr as a two step magnification with first at 5x and second at 16x to ensure focus gets nailed. There is no auto focus with this glass and some may have individual characteristics. If it is missing focus on a massive scale then it may be an idea to contact Irix, or a qualified service tech, direct.

Excellent, thanks for coming back so soon, I will try this out and see how I get on I don't want to give up with this lens, after all what else is there

Indeed, it is the same approach as working with the Carl Zeiss range of pro lenses, no auto focus. I did have a 14-24 f2.8 from Nikon that I used with Canon and a Novoflex adapter. All manual also, super sharp but almost US$3,000 so not cheap. Sold that after receiving this which is as sharp.

Yes a lot better using Live View , which means tripods all the way and that's the problem, of course I use the tripod lots of times in fact most times but with this wide angle lens being F2.4 I thought I'd be able to walk have more freedom which is the way I love to work, but the biggest problem is from F2.4 to 3.5 On Infiniti ( is unusable ) take a look at my Flickr page Dave Newby 123 the nighttime pictures were taken with Toking AT-X PRO11-16 F/2.8 DX II , the pain is I've sold it, is designed for a crop sensor camera canon70D, which I've also sold, ,,, I have bench your ear enough, I'll spend tomorrow with lens and make my decision then, I really really want this Lens to work, many thanks for your great help( Live view does work)

I don't have one but those little bean bags that screw into the base of a camera are an ideal option over a tripod, especially in the urban environment where tripods can simply be a pain in the bum. I've shot a lot wide open and don't have any issues. Across the gamut of camera technology RAW tends to be tad soft by nature so a lot also comes down to post production. I'd strongly suggest the freely available Nik Gallery Suite from Google, just do a search for it, a very powerful editing suite.
