    The Armata is a new Russian heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV). It is also referred as the T-15. Its development commenced in 2011. This heavy IFV was developed as a part of armored vehicle family. It is based on the same platform as the Armata main battle tank. First mock-up or prototype was completed in 2013. During the same year it was revealed to Russian military officials. This heavy IFV was first publicly revealed in 2015.
    The T-15 Armata heavy IFV has an unusual layout with a front-mounted engine. Interestingly the Armata tank has a rear powerpack arrangement. It became an issue for designers in order to make a troop compartment in the rear part of the vehicle. So the heavy IFV has a swapped front end with the rear. It is driving backwards comparing with the original Armata MBT.
    This armored vehicle is operated by a crew 3 men, including commander, gunner and driver. Crewmembers are located in the center of the vehicle, behind the front engine compartment. Troop compartment is located at the rear. It is unknown how many passengers this vehicle can carry. It is likely that this heavy IFV accommodates 6 to 7 dismounts. Troops egress and dismount via rear power-operated doors.
    It has newly-developed base armor, made of steel, ceramics and other composite materials. Also it has Malakhit add-on explosive reactive armor, that is claimed to be of new generation. A front-mounted engine provides additional protection for the crew and passengers. As usual this armored vehicle is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems. It has been reported that it will be fitted with new Afganit active protection system. It also has a new countermeasures system that reduces the chance of being hit by enemy anti-tank guided missiles with semi-automatic guidance.
    This new Russian vehicle outguns most current troop carriers, based on tank chassis. It has unmanned turret, armed with 30 mm cannon, coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun and 4 Kornet-M anti-tank missile launchers. The same turret is also used on the Kurganets-25. The cannon has an effective range of up to 4 km. There are 500 rounds for the main gun, including 160 armor-piercing and 340 high-explosive fragmentation rounds. Currently the Kornet-M is one of the deadliest anti-tank guided weapons. These missiles have a maximum range of 8-10 km and can also target helicopters.
    Initially it has been reported that this armored vehicle is powered by an A-82-2 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 200 hp. It is a new-generation engine that is much more compact than previous Russian tank engines. However in 2019 information emerged that this heavy IFV is fitted with a more powerful A-85-3 engine, developing 1 500 hp. Interestingly this rating is for a peak power which would be used only during wartime and at a cost of extremely short service life. Normally this engine develops 1 350 hp. Engine is located at the front and provides additional protection for the crew and passengers. Vehicle has 7 roadwheels. This heavy IFV has a built-in self-entrenchment blade and can briefly dig itself a defensive position.
    Hope you enjoy!!

    Basically, I'd say they learned from BMP series... Those things had decent firepower to support the infantry when needed, but the protection was rather bad... That is why they used them for support rather than troop carriers, but that also meant attracting more enemy fire and combined with not much armor... Yeah... High losses... T-15 seems to address those issues. But I guess we won't know until it is actually used in real action...

      For the last six months, the Russians have been making $1 billion in extra profit from gas sales every day, which is half the US defense budget. Considering the prices of Russian weapons and the salaries of soldiers, it is more like four budgets. The IDF pioneered this type of very heavy APC/IFV with Achzarit, Nakpadon and Namer. I'm very surprised it has taken this long for other nations to catch up. Similarly with the front engine MBT layout. There are many pros to having front mounted engines. The major con of poor driver vision is no longer an issue, with the introduction of cheap cameras and display screens. Driver vision can be better than ever before.

    Russia has proven that while the philosophy of Quality over Quantity does hold merit, they have also proven that they are unwilling or unable to field the cost of such advanced units. Not even counting the sanctions, the T-14 has sat in Limbo for over half a decade and has now gotten to the point that, Russia wants to sell it for export without any battlefield testing. I think the T-15 looks amazing and if all of these advancements are accurate (because we all know the, Russians would never overstate the capabilities of their equipment) then it is a pretty amazing piece of equipment. I just can't see, Russia fielding these in any numbers that will matter. I could see the West utilizing something like this but again in small numbers. The forward blade reminds me of the G6 Rhino which has always looked and performed wonderfully. I wasn't paying attention but what were the measurements? Looks pretty damned big for deep penetration into urban areas.

    • @guaposneeze
      @guaposneeze Рік тому +4

      The T-15 design seems nice on paper. Honestly, it seems pretty similar to something I would sketch if you told me I could design anything similar for my vast imaginary armor. The only problem is that Russia and I have pretty much equal capacity to field them in significant numbers in the real world. Unlike Russia, I can admit that my empire is completely imaginary.

    Actually this IFV would be the equivalent of the Israeli NAMER IFV, that is based on the MERKAVA tank and not the tank itself. The MERKAVA can carry four troops in the back if the ammunition stored there is not carried and this is probably a feature to allow the evacuation of an other tank's crew in an emergency, rather than carry fighting troops although it is possible.

    Quite a sexy thing, would like to know if it can catch up with the 'relativ' low price of T-14. I guess its a great thing to have swaped so much of your armor to ERA, so they're not just lighter, it also can make repairs in teh field much easier and sustain longer operation times. Meanwhile the mass production of standardised ERA for several types of vehilces would reduce overall costs. And again in fitting more vehilces with such armor, ther more 'basic' body can be upgraded longer into the future and enahnce service life a lot. 10 out of 10 if there is no problem with money, i guess.

    The concept, considering Russia's military priorities, is great. The issues will arise on the back end though. Can they produce enough of them to matter? Can they support it once it's been deployed? These things are very important and based on the current performance of their military it's looking like the answers to those questions will be a hard "No."

    • @greg.kasarik

      I agree. The logistics of maintaining this vehicle will be easier, in terms of parts, given it is a shared platform. However, at nearly 50 tons, it is going to be a very thirsty beast and yet more tractor fodder, should the Russians not get their act together.

    • @greg.kasarik
      @greg.kasarik Рік тому +1

      @@stingerrgb2754 Please try to remain civil. By your definition, nobody would be able to say anything about any country's defence industry, because at its heart ALL the important information is always going to be classified.
      One does not need to be an expert on the Russian defence industry, to be able to make some useful observations. Defence manufacturing has commonalities around the world, so if you are familiar with the processes, and technologies, you can make useful observations.
      For example, we know from captured equipment, that a significant proportion of the high tech found in Russian equipment is sourced from Western countries and is now sanctioned. This makes sense, as Russia lacks any capacity to manufacture even low end computer chips.
      We also know that, following the initial 2014 sanctions, Russia has found workarounds that allow it to produce at least some high tech equipment in limited quantities. But that they appear to be making the same mistake as WW2 Germany, in that they are wasting these in one shot "precision" wunderwaffe, rather than more boring equipment, that might actually change the dynamic on the battlefield.
      Given just how much equipment Russia has lost since February, combined with the fact that they were gambling on a short war, it is unlikely that they'll be able to make good their losses of high tech components without significant buy in from nations, like China, that have already demonstrated a huge reluctance to get involved and who would arguably benefit from a militarily weakened Russia.
      Don't forget that the Russian port of Vladivostok used to be Chinese and they'd love the opportunity to take it back and obtain a Pacific port that bypasses the First Island Chain.
      With respect to the entire Amarta program, we know that they are years behind schedule. By now, they were supposed to have over 2,000 T-14s and very few of the older Soviet era designs remaining in active service. We can objectively observe that this is not the case.
      Also, they are unlikely to ever field these weapon systems, in their current configuration.
      Unless the Russians are too stupid to learn from the current conflict, they'll be looking to significantly increase the top armour protection of all these vehicles. Against modern ATGMs the traditionally poor top armour of all previous generations of armoured vehicles has turned out to be a significant point of failure.
      By way of example, after their experiences in the Gaza Strip, Israel redesigned the Merkava to be far more resilient to top down attacks, even going so far as to remove the loader's hatch, as this created a point of weakness.
      The Russians could just slap on more armour and be done with it. But then they'll face the same issue that the WW2 Germans had with many of their rushed vehicles, in that they'll discover all sorts of problems, because you can't just throw a few tons of armour onto a vehicle, without it straining the suspension, engine, drivetrain and making it top heavy and more prone to rolling (See PzKpfw V - AKA Panther). Modern weapon systems are complicated beasts and you can't change one aspect, without it impacting the entire package.
      The question about logistics and support for the vehicle, once fielded is significant. The Amarta series is a huge departure from all previous generations of tank. It will need expert maintenance personnel who are highly trained on all of its unique features and bleeding edge technology. This doesn't happen overnight.
      For example, if the external cameras stop working, you'll need someone who knows exactly how they are wired, and likely points of failure, in order to get the vehicle back on track. No cameras, no ability to reverse safely, which would be a real bitch for your accompanying infantry.
      We also know, from announcements made by the Russian MOD that they are focusing on upgrading vehicles currently in storage. Given that they have only limited resources, this will inevitably put the Amarta program further behind making the entry of any of these vehicles into the current conflict increasingly unlikely.
