    Thank you Dan! Incredible lesson! Thanks to you I learned the modes/degrees of the major scale and actually understand it all! Now I just have to practice, practice, practice until my fingers just know what to do. Thank you for adding the chords, love this lesson! The bass player in the band my husband is in quit, leaving me the opportunity so I jumped on it. You said in one of your lessons to join a band, so I did, even though I wasn't sure I was ready. I needed to learn how to write bass lines very quickly. Through watching your videos (over and over) I've developed some beautiful bass lines. My husband is the drummer he says he is so proud of me, that my bass lines are very melodic and are adding so much to the music. (How many bassist get to live with a drummer and an excellent one at that) It is truly thanks to your lessons! Your teaching style is so easy to understand! I'm looking forward to practicing all this tonight! You are such an excellent teacher! To anyone reading this, watch everything you can from Dan Hawkins and see your bass playing improve dramatically! Thank you sooooooo much Dan! ❤

    Thank you Dan. Very useful info on your channel. I'm a performing musician for 30 years (45 years self taught guitarist and went back to University for a BA in it, and now I play bass too - in several bands). I was having a hard time finding much in the way of lessons that I could relate to on UA-cam. Either it would be stuff for beginners that I already knew, or more advanced but not explaining things in ways that made it engaging or fun. Thank you!

    Damn, the exercise just got even better. Ever since you posted the 1st one, I've been doing it for 45 minutes to an hour daily and it improved my technique and ear greatly, but I didn't focus too much on the theory behind it, but now I understand the vast options this gives me and can be applied to any key. One question, how would you practice it on the 5 string bass? I think that shapes stay the same, right?
    I practiced the 1st version on all 5 strings: I'd start with C major and do all the shapes on A string, then G major and all shapes on E, then D major and all shapes on B. Should I continue doing it like that, or change something?
    With your free lessons, Funk bass course and great 1 on 1 lessons with my teacher and daily 2-3 hours of, what would most consider boring, practice, it's all starting to make sense.
    You're the man, Dan!

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  2 роки тому +1

      Really happy it’s all making sense! Yes, you can continue the patterns on a 5 string until you kind of run out of strings. The pattern will start the same and then you’ll run out of strings but you can visualise it as the same pattern extending itself down another string. Works with 6 string too.

    Hi Dan, wouldn't you play a dominant pentatonic over the mixolydian mode?

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Paul. I’ve never heard of a dominant pentatonic. Major pentatonic works well over it but - in a blues context - a bit of minor can work really well too!

  • @franknemeth2593
    @franknemeth2593 2 роки тому +1

    Sooo - still trying to understand the WHY of the modes. so if the band is playing an Am chord, normally I'd be using the minor pent or possibly aeolian, and if the band is playing an A Major chord, I'd be playing major pent or possibly A Ionian scale. So what Modes gives me is 2 "new" scales to use when they are playing Am - dorian and phrygian. and 2 new scales to use when they are playing Amajor - Lydian and mixolydian ?

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  2 роки тому

      Not really… I know it seems confusing! It’s all about how those chords function. That means, if the A Major is the I chord then it’s that Ionian mode. If the A Minor is the vi chord then it’s Aeolian. Dorian would not be an option in this case. So it’s all about context. If you message me some different scenarios, I’ll do a video on it. It’s easy once you get it!

    • @franknemeth2593
      @franknemeth2593 2 роки тому +1

      @@OnlineBassCourses - thank you!! here are a couple examples - sooo. if the chords are I-IV-V in key C... I'm thinking C-F-G are all major chords, - I should use the same major triad shape for all 3 and the same major pent shape for all 3. If I were to use a mode, I would use Ionian for all 3 but your saying Ionin, lydian, mixolydian are what i should be thinking if i want to embellish past the arpegio and pentatonic shapes? If the chord sequence includes a ii chord, I'd use Ionian but theory says use dorian? When I was going thru your funk course you introduced the dorian mode and I assumed it could be used for every minor chord occurrence. oops. So i need to learn 7 modes if the song is in a major key and another 7 modes if the song is in a minor key? (no wonder 95 percent of riffs are pentatonic - though u said that in one of your videos) - thank you so much. PS. cant wait for the soul course to be released, I have the book and and ready to go!!

    • @OnlineBassCourses
      @OnlineBassCourses  2 роки тому

      @@franknemeth2593 Thanks, Frank. I'll try and do a video addressing some of these questions. Basically, learn the mode created on each degree of a major scale (they're EXACTLY the same for the relative minor - just starting from the 6th note of the major scale) as well as the associated arpeggio/chord. That will teach you how they 'function' within a key. That's your answer(s) right there...
