It' been 48 years since I stood retreat as OD at Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls, Montana. Don't recall about morning colors, as that was someone else's duty. Retreat was at 1630, and "To the Colors" was played on a record player, through the loudspeaker system. I still get goose bumps when I hear it!Thanks to all you who served, whatever the branch!
My hubby was in 52 area for 7 years. this was my favorite part of the day, morning and night. Everybody stop walking, driving and talking: It's time for Colors. God Bless!!!
Thank you for your service sir. I'm planning on joining the Corps when I turn 17. Currently I'm a 13 year old Put in the Young Marines program. Ever since I was like 6 it's always been my dream to serve my country and protect my loves ones. People always ask me why the Marines and I say because they're just badass compared to every other branch. Thank you for your service once again sir. SEMPER FIDELIS!
Jonathan Ruiz when you go to high school, look into JROTC! If and when you join, you'll get to rank up to PFC after boot camp if you've done 2-4 years of JROTC. (I'm a MCJROTC cadet and a fellow young patriot who wants to join the Corps ;) )
Good Luck to the both of you I'm 18 but can't join until I finish high school which will be next year. I'm also in the Young Marines, and I hope I can join the USMC. Transformation from a Devil Pup to a Devil Dog. OOH RAH!! Semper Fi! Thank you for all the men and women of the US Armed Forces. Attention! Hand Salute!* /)O_O(for colors and vets)
When I worked as a civilian in Station HQ on an RAF Station the flagstaff was right in front of my office. So I used to see the guard raising the flag each morning. Any service personnel within sight of it when it went up had to halt and salute. They used to blow a whistle when it went up and anyone caught not paying respects was in trouble lol! So much nicer with a bugle call. Which is how we did it when I was in the Army Reserve on camp.
Outstanding. It is considered a privilege to be part of the morning and evening flag detail. ps: "To The Colors" As bugler for my Boy Scout troop, I used to play this at morning flag raising on camp-outs with other troops. It was my favorite call. In the US Military, if outdoors when you heard this call being played, you were to stop, come to attention, face the flag, and salute (or salute in the direction of the call if the flag was not visible). You were to hold the salute until the call was completed. This is still a standing order in all branches of US military service.
Thank you for this. I remember when I got the opportunity to perform Morning Colors representing Troop 316 at Catalina Island's Boyscout Camp Cherry. There I learned how to swim like a seal in 'cold' water, how to start a fire, fish, fly-fish, basic health & rescue, shoot a rifle, and a shotgun, how to navigate with the stars, and night diving. It was one of the best experiences of my life. It's something that schooling can't recreate and teach in a classroom.
They didn't tell me the Boy Scouts was preparatory school for PTSD. It's something that never goes away. As Major General Smedley Butler wrote, "War is a racket."
Army guy here, been researching, and man theres so many differences between Army, Marines/Navy...etc.lots of commanders discretion, changing times etc...
Hey. Cool video. I was on active duty from 1995 to 1999. I was 0311, and ended up with 3/5 when I got to the Fleet. From what I can remember, Area 52 was where MCT/SOI were. I can also remember that some guys who graduated from boot camp with me got to the Fleet a few weeks or so before I did, because as soon as they got to SOI they went to their training company. So it wasn't everybody. Just some of us went to either mess duty or guard duty for a few weeks. I, too, ended up on guard duty.
That's good the hear and see again.. when I was on Guard Duty at Edson Range, we'd post at the 5 minute warning hook up the flag and wait.. Sunday mornings with the Garrison Flag was killer on the biceps! LoL good times, good times..
So I was on Area 52 guard duty back in 1995, brother! How old that makes me feel to think there are guys on Area 52 guard duty now who weren't even born when I was doing the same thing?
In 95, I was 53 area COG, Regimental Sgt.Major would scream from the CP about how my death would take place every morning if that flag touched the ground . . . .lol
OUTSTANDING! I've done morning and evening colors at Camp Lejeune Building One (by the traffic circle on Holcomb Blvd aka Swoop Circle) on a number of occasions during 1996 and 1997. @ kenneedsmusic I do agree with you as this does seem like a slow raise. We also ran the flag up as fast as possible but it was the opposite during evening colors. We always made sure the flag was clipped on properly so we didn't raise the flag upside down. We were told the Sgt. Major of MCB Camp Lejeune enjoyed watching morning colors so yeah there was some added to motivation to not f*#k shit up! And yes I still find myself whistling morning colors to this day. Semper Fi

Cole Pleshe what Reville is played on Marine Corps BASES, where do you get your info. So it's only played on two bases in the whole of USMC, hmm good to know
Reveille is the morning wake up, colors is played at 0800 when the flag is raised, retreat is played at sundown with the lowering of the flag, and taps is played at lights out.

The U.S. Navy started this tradition, reveille is played to wake men from sleep, it is not play usually played to raise the flag. Reveille can be played but it is usually the Nation Anthem , and flag raising and is usually at 8 o'clock in the morning and lowering is at sunset and retreat is played.
Thanks for your service Josh. For some dumb reason I loved hearing reveille every morning, to me it was the start of a new day and new adventure. Even when I was in Vietnam.

Why is the bugle playing retreat while raising colors? Should be reveille?
Reveille isn't USUALLY played on Marine Corps bases except the MCRDs. They call you are hearing is "Colors". "Retreat" is much slower.

@bobsit1945 Yes sir it is. And I agree, the noise can be very annoying.
joshjames1234 - I am working on playing morning colors USMC Bugle with the Assembly call.

Hi Petey - to answer your initial question, these Marines had graduated boot camp 1-2 months prior. In this case, the bugle was on a recording.
GREAT JOB!!!!! THANKS!!!!!
Except they played Retreat and To the colors in the morning. Should have been Reveille
The U.S. Navy started this tradition, reveille is played to wake men from sleep, it is not play usually played to raise the flag. Reveille can be played but it is usually the Nation Anthem , and flag raising and is usually at 8 o'clock in the morning and lowering is at sunset and retreat is played.
