What was disgusting is that Sea World tried to blame Dawn by claiming she shouldn't have worn her hair out and that's why it happened. It happened because these share holders prioritise money over abject cruelty to sentient creatures who have bigger emotional areas of their brains than we do. To steal these intelligent creatures from their mothers, often killing the mothers in the process, is wicked. No other word for it. Rip all the trainer's who loved their whales.😔

I mean at some point we have to call out the stupidity of these humans thinking they can train wild animals. It's insane, and they are responsible for whatever happens to themselves. There is zero blame for the animal just being an animal, while the human is doing idiotic nonsense. I mean we do the same shit to other humans and wonder why we have so many problems. People are stupid and crazy.

    • @KathyHussey063

@@Born-Again-Warrior Well, they weren't "stupid" to think they COULD train an orca to perform tricks, 'cause evidently they were right about that, but they WERE downright ignorant not to see the huge danger they all put themselves in when they got into the water & sat on, stood on, rode on the backs of these huge orcas. They used to hop in & out of the pools many tiimes for just 1 show & many of the shows ran through their scripts several tmes each day.
Trusting an animal that's large enough to kill you if it just burps too hard & whacks you with it's tail, is just living in denial.
They put themselves at great risk every single show. It's amazing to think that someone first gathered up the courage to get in the tank with a captive, imprisoned orca. and train one !
You're right it was stupid to think no one would ever be attacked by these orcas.
but also, one 21 yearb old marine biologist just fell in the polnand lost her life, 2 were trainers and 1 snuck in a closed pool with orcas at night, so not all who died had ever trained the orcas who attacked and killed them.
The sheer boredom of that tank existence is why they lose it, it drives ythem crazy.

The fact that the dorsal fin of a male orca collapses in captivity while that does not happen in the wild, tells us something is very wrong with keeping these animals in captivity. Same goes for a great whites. They always die if you try to put one in an aquarium.

Port and Starboard , the two Orcas that ran the sharks off in South Africa also have collapsed dorsal fins. I hate that Orcas, Dolphins , and Elephants are held in captivity. They really suffer a lot from it. It's not right to think that a person or company can " own" these animals. Found the movie Blackfish at our local library and watching it was heartbreaking. It changed my understanding of how incredibly intelligent these animals are and how highly socialized their pack structure is . One very sad part of the movie was when Seaworld took the newborn calf away from one of the female orcas and you could see her literally crying out in pain mourning her loss . The movie shows how these animals get depressed and angry after years in captivity and they and can lash out due to the stress . They should be left in their natural Ocean habitat , not kept in a cement pool for human entertainment imho .

I know it's not the same animal,(though it's VERY close)but have you seen The Cove? It's about the dolphin trade and moldering in Japan and it's put together by one of the show Flipper's main dolphin trainers who one day realized it was shitty to do this to these animals. They're pack animals that are used to traveling 25-50 miles a day and by putting them in captivity it's STRESSES them out hugely. The same way the orcas are. Like so stressed at every SeaWorld type place that harbors Orcas, dolphins and porpoises has a shed just to hold all the antacid they give to them because of the stress. It fucks their stomachs up so much they get super nasty heartburn. And really, I bet it's what the orca killings stem from. Stress, pain/painful heartburn and just snapping like any mammal would.

Hal , when you said that the Orcas are kind of like humans in their family structures , apparently they are even closer to others in the same pod than we are to our families. Research on the Orca brain shows that the part of the brain that is responsible for closeness , empathy, etc , is way more wrinkled and larger than ours , thus more complex. I read that in a lot of ways an Orca pod is like one individual organism. It makes sense , I've always thought that it was interesting how they all surface for air almost at the same time . I've always been fascinated by Orcas , they're by far my favorite animal ( don't tell my dogs).

Not trying to defend SeaWorld in any way, but Tilikum was psychologically damaged long before he arrived there. Sealand of the Pacific was notorious for its mistreatment of orcas. He was broken before he even arrived at SeaWorld Orlando. He did have more space and far better veterinary care at Orlando. He also had a whole new set of problems. He was often raked by Katina, the park's matriarch. His life was incredibly tragic.
Keto (son of Kalina and Kotar), Kohana (daughter of Tilikum and Takara), Tekoa (son of Tilikum and Taima) and Skyla (daughter of Tilikum and Kalina) were taken from their mothers and transferred to Spain. Skyla was only two years old. None of the young orcas learned appropriate behavior. No wonder Keto snapped.
To borrow a quote from David Kirby's book - "But what if the capture of the young calf had never occurred? Tilikum might still be swimming free in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic, chasing his cherished herring, perhaps alongside his mother. He might be surrounded by siblings, nieces, and nephews, and his grandmother might still be leading the pod.
An oceanic Tilikum would be gliding through his boundless home with fearless power and majestic grace, his fin erect, his teeth intact, his interactions with humans minimal and nonlethal. There would be no need for gelatin or Tagamet, antibiotics or isolation.
And of course, if Tilikum has never been wrenched away from his family and friends, entirely for the amusement of humans, the family and friends of Keltie Byrne, Daniel Dukes, and Dawn Brancheau might not be grieving to this day.
Tilikum was trying to tell us something. It was time to listen."

There was a lady in a kayak by us who had the Orcas swimming right next to us and all the adults were freaking out. Being a little girl raised on Disney movies, I though it was the coolest thing I had ever seen and didn't understand the potential danger at all 😂 still one of my most cherished memories. @@pranc236 If you've ever seen how Orcas hunt seals or other baby whales, you would be pretty confident that, out in the wild, they have no interest in harming us. As mentioned above, there are always gonna be exceptions. Same thing as dolphins. Most people don't know this but, dolphins can be extremely savage animals in the wild. Over the past decade, researchers have started to observe the hostile relationship that dolphins have with otters and apparently, dolphins have been observed harassing, attacking and raping sea otters. I thought this was some kind of colorful language that was describing the brutality of their behavior but they literally torture and sexually assault otters.
It's totally f*cked up. But as far as I know, there aren't any credible reports of dolphins attacking humans in the wild. Or maybe that's being covered up too. However, I believe there is some rare footage from SeaWorld where one of the dolphins was attempting some intimacy with one of the female trainers and it was very possessive of this trainer too, which made it difficult to separate the 2 of them and get her out of the tank.

@@RustCole01 i have seen reports of wild dolphin attacks on humans but every time the human was being a idiot. One that i can remember was a partly beached dolphin in brazil were two drunk men saw it. One man tried to help it and the other poured beer into its blow hole and then tried to put the can in its blow hole. A wave came in and the dolphin was able to free its self, backed a few feet then speared the jerk man in his chest. The jerk man died from this.
I went swimming with dolphins in Cozumel and the power of these animals was incredible. I can only image what a orca could do.
Ive seen orca’s hunting different things and it is quite amazing as well. I know they will kill great whites just for the liver. I think they can tell that our liver would be to them, smaller than a raisin to us. Or that we arent fat enough to eat but they can tell that we are intelligent and that makes them curious about us.
What u said dolphins do to sea otters, i heard sea otters will do to baby seals and usually killing the seal in the process. Leopard seals been known to do that to penguins too. I find the orca’s the most interesting as anything that kills sharks for fun is ok with me.

On the issue of captured dolphin forced to perform, I was in the dolphin tank at Discovery Cove with my husband and 4-year-old, never even thinking back then that these animals could be dangerous, or how wrong it is to keep them in captivity. The dolphin was so playful with my son, who was the only child in the group, and kept coming up to him and giving him little splashes with his nose. By how gentle he was I knew the dolphin knew my son was a child.
But the dolphin was being put through a routine and he did not want to tow people that day. He towed every single person in the group (except my son who just wanted to talk to him and splash with him), and I was the last person. The instructor told me to grasp his fin and let him tow me. The dolphin broke away from the routine and swam faster than anything I've ever seen in my life to the far end of the different enclosures which was a long way away. Instructor was angry and aggravated and was slapping the water for to come back. Finally the dolphin came back but again didn't seem to want to do the routine. I protested and told the instructor that the dolphin doesn't seem to want to do this right now. She insisted that I grab hold of his fin because she said, "he has to do it!" These instructors won't take no for an answer from the animal (because they are told not to) and they will keep forcing the animal to obey like training a dog.
The dolphin gave an incredibly powerful slap and kick with his tail which hit me in the leg and took off again. It was like getting kicked by a mule, no exaggeration. I couldn't move because I had instant Charlie horse in my leg, and it was so painful. A couple of other trainers saw what happened and came into the water on either side of me to help me out. By the next day my entire leg was black and stiff and I could barely walk.
None of these animals should be kept in captivity! They belong in the ocean. Those that are in captivity for reasons of rehabilitation from an injury should not be forced to perform. When an animal indicates they don't want to do a trick (like in my case the dolphin or with Tillicum), they should never ever be forced and food should never be withheld from them.

She died at the hands of Tillikum if you listen to the eye witness accounts, although the other 2 whales did involve themselves. Such a tragedy- so young and had so much to live for. There are still too many Orca left in captivity that need to be released. However, Orcas are now in grave danger due to the Chinese and Japanese trying to capture Orca for their new "hobby" of being whale "trainers" to collect all the money these prisoners will bring in for them. They have NO IDEA what they're doing and so many Orca and dolphins are dying!!!

What a horrible way to have to go but at least the terror would only last a few quick moments. As you said these whales don’t belong in this kind of an environment, they’re much too big and they need far more freedom and that’s where the only fatalities caused have been by ones that were in captivity.

Sealand of the Pacific was actually a marine park located here in Victoria ,British Columbia on Canada's west coast ( On the southern tip of Vancouver Island, not far from Seattle and Vancouver) and not in San Diego. Sealand closed for good not long after Tillikum's first incident causing a human fatality, which involved a trainer from Sealand. So fatality locations are 1 in Canada, 2 in the U.S ( all 3 North American fatalities were involving Tillikum) and 1 overseas in Spain. Tillicum is actually the name of an area here in Victoria ( spelled with a C instead of a K) Either spelling is Coast Salish in origin (the local indigenous people)

There's nothing quite like being part of the SeaWorld show with the Whales back in '91. My young Son (God rest his Soul) was put on Shamu's back as part of the Show when it posed out of the water. I think the photograph was extra. I also got to pet Shamu and describe to the audience what the Killer Whale felt like. I described the Killer Whale like "petting a cold, wet inner tube". Privately, I was thinking I better not say anything more derogatory about this Killer Whale's skin because those 40 to 56 interlocking conicle shaped teeth - each one around three inches long. are used for ripping and tearing, but not for chewing. They eat their food in chunks or entirely whole. Those conical shaped teeth looked like death, warmed over a rusty can of sterno. They're smart, it might have known what I was saying to the audience over the microphone. Looking down that Killer whale's mouth and throat really made me nervous too. I started to sweat a bit. I can see how one of these huge Killer Whales could very easily make a Klondike bar out of a large Polar Bear in a matter of seconds in the Wild a drift on an iceberg. . After I insulted the Whale about it's inner tube skin texture, the Trainer made a scooping hand gesture to the Whale towards me. Suddenly, I got splashed and drenched with 54 f degree sea water in the middle of December in Orlando. It was breathtaking, really. I didn't dry off too quickly either. Lucky Covid-19 wasn't thought of back in those days. So, I've got that going for me on my life resume as well.

He comes up a few times and is trying to reassure the whale and is stroking it. The whale eventually lets him go and he just makes it out of the pool, but the whale chases him so incredibly fast he only just makes it. I watched Blackfish also a few years ago so sad and cruel. Before anyone gets on to Hal for calling killer whales “whales,” and chimes in with “OrCaS aRe DoLpHiNs!”, remember that all dolphins and porpoises are cetaceans, aka whales. Orcinus orca also literally means “whale from hell” in Latin, with “orca” being a common Roman term for “whale” and “orcinus” meaning “belonging to Orcus (Pluto)”. So you’re not calling them a kinder, gentler name when you say “orca.”

Those poor whales in captivity had their babies taken from them right soon as they give birth. I heard a story where the mother whale could be heard crying for her baby for hours and hours. It's a business to some of those places not a family. No wonder they attack. A wild animal will do what they do. Leave it to humans to try to make money off of it and ruin it. Tilikum initially grabbed her by the arm, not by her hair. The ponytail narrative was spun by Seaworld in an effort to absolve Tilikum and Seaworld as a whole of liability and implicitly blame Dawn Branchue for her own death. (As if swimming with Orcas isn't inherently dangerous and dumb... an artificial environment Seaworld created). The ponytail was a red herring to distract from the aggressive nature displayed by the Orca, which Seaworld sought to downplay for the sake of their business. In the aftermath of the incident, Seaworld implied they had a policy forbidding their trainers from having exposed hair like ponytails around the whales, but that was never the case.. there is endless footage of other trainers with ponytails in the same kind of positions with the whales. This could have happened to anyone. The blame is with Seaworld for exploiting Orcas and imprisoning them in tiny tanks and making them perform for food.

I have seen a documentary on killer whales where the orca create a wave to push seals off of big slabs of ice but I remember seeing one where you see them try it with a guy in a boat, not sure if it was the same documentary or not but I remember thinking maybe they aren't such gentle giants as you see on TV.

They might have killed him, or just played with him a while. or just left him alone once they realised he's not their regular prey. They are such intelligent creatures, and sometimes you see them practicing hunting techniques, to teach the young members of the pod how to hunt different types of prey. They could have been practicing. But I wouldn't want to test that theory out to be honest 😅

They will of course hunt opportunistically also, if food is scarce. And the hunting techniques of each pod are passed on to the new members through practice, this was the behaviour I was referring to specifically.

Here is my take on these captured whales. You need to treat them like dangerous prisoners, because that's exactly what they are. You cannot withhold their treats time after time when they perform like they should, and when a whale shows a COMPLETE disliking for a trainer, it means stay the hell out of the tank until you can establish the communication again and get the whale to trust you again. These whales are smarter than anyone thought for many many years, and are better parental figures and family units than humans are. They took these animals out of social pods and made them do tricks for treats. Sea World doesn't interact with these animals, only the trainers do. SeaWorld are liars. 100% complete lying bastards. They (SeaWorld) treated these animals horribly, and would do nothing for these trainers when they would notice issues with the whales. Watch "Black Fish". If you have not seen it, you should.
Tillicum finally died, thank goodness for him as he is out of his misery, but SeaWorld still captures these whales as babies....Washington has BANNED them from capturing them in Puget Sound, but it wont stop these a$$holes from getting them and putting them in small tanks like jail cells, and eventually these animals (like humans do) go crazy.
Orcas do not do this in open ocean interactions.
Edit: Tillicum was a sperm factory and worth millions of dollars. He fathered/sired 21 killer whale babies...9 of them are still alive as of last Summer.
Edit: They still had shows after Dawn. They stopped trainers from getting in the water is all.

Orca's are the largest mammal in the Porpoise family (Dolphins) - Fun fact they were first named by the Portuguese as "Whale Killers" because they witnessed them hunting Humpbacks... but of course due to translation differences they became know as Killer Whales (and of course they are not a whale species). Just for size reference i have been paddle boarding near a pack of Orcas hunting our Oct Humpback whale migration... and the largest male Orca dorsal fin breaching near me was probably as tall as me standing on the board... scary shit n to be honest i steer clear of them now because they really do seem to want scare you n laugh at you in their own way

Amazing , we have a pod here in Scotland & also a humpback whale (Mike) that visits our east coast around this time of year but I doubt the 2 shall ever clash , they feed on the grey seals of which there are plenty I believe. Incredible to think that the orcas would probably win the battle given the immense size of whale.

Every animal can turn on you, family dogs in a pack can turn on you as well with their prey drive. This is a animal with Killer in it's first name its not like it's purple dinosaur named Barney and we have seen how intensely in the wild they train their young in hunting. You could take a shark to puppy training classes but it's still a shark in its DNA. Imagine how insane a whale could be driven only having their performances to do and a shoebox of a puddle to live in compared to the ocean. Whales migrate and do many things we could not even begin to understand. I don't blame the whales I blame man kinds expectation of a animal stolen from its home. They need to do what is right and stop trying to domesticate what God intended to be wild...

No one should be able to have wildlife including tigers, bears, killer whales etc. Hal, I loved the show. It was great that you talked about helping animals instead of capturing them and putting them in cages. More awareness needs to be said and get the ball rolling.
