  • Steve shows you a step-by-step guide to replacing valve cover gaskets on this 2003 Toyota Highlander with a 3.0 V6.
    Before you start, you must remove the upper intake manifold - a step-by-step walkthrough of that procedure is available here: • 2003 Highlander V6 | I...

    Excellent video sir. Lots of great tips along the way. Plus you mentioned things, such as the plug boot holding tabs that few DIYers would think to look for. 👍👍

    excellent job! small tip for the future: add 2 washers under each valve cover bolt. the reason it leaks like this so often is the bolts aren't threaded up far enough and once those integrated crush washers give up their initial torque, you can't really tighten them properly. the washers add a little distance and fix that problem.

    Did you make sure seaks went over tubes? Only way just push on is if put seals in with seal tapper down not up

  • @mxhusky5308

    @4:23; those spark plug gaskets appear to be installed backwards. They should have tapered side should be facing down so they slide over the tubes easier. They would go in that way and hold but it would be much harder to reinstall the cover. Otherwise great video.

      Wow, good eye mxhusky530! I realized they were backwards when I went to the car, whoops! I flipped them over, off camera and the other cover was done right the first time. I showed that in detail later in the video. Thanks for calling that out.

    Thanks for the video, the side pins which hold the spark plug tube gasket are almost damaged when I pull them out ..would that be a problem holding it in place?

    • @ToolDemos

      No, it only needs a tiny piece to keep them in place.

  • @Mrmarginofsafety

    The OEM spark plug oil seals if never been done don't come out easy, they are phenolic bonded to an aluminum band and pressed in. The phenolic just chips away from the band trying to extract with a screwdriver damaging the aluminum cover. I bent the aluminum band over away from the cover and then used the seal puller to complete the job.

    Would the oil leak on the valve cover gasket cause the smoking from the exhaust? Or; a po420 on the bank 1? Or o2 sensor p0170?

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  4 місяці тому +1

      Some smoke maybe, but not those engine codes.
      Edit: the smoke (if any) would be coming from the outside of the exhaust manifold. Like if the oil leaked onto it and got burned up. If you have smoke coming out of your tailpipe, this leak would not cause that problem.

    • @JF-sv7qo

      What would be the cause of smoke out the exhaust and po420 bank 1

    • @JF-sv7qo

      I ask because I can put a catalytic converter in and it will pass smog but the problem will still be their progressively eating away at it again

    My 04 v6 Highlander seems to burn oil. One quart every 1000-2000 miles I am guessing. 230,000 miles oil changed religiously every 4000 miles original owner. If my valve cover gaskets were leaking I want to see it on the ground or smell it burning correct? I don’t see any evidence of any leakage anywhere so I presume it’s burning it. Any ideas?thanks!

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  Рік тому +3

      Hi condor, yes if you are losing that much oil from a leak, it would be very obvious. The most likely scenario in your case is that the engine is consuming it. You won’t notice much blue smoke from your exhaust because the catalytic converter is doing its job (for now).
      At higher mileage, the oil control rings on the pistons get gummed up and don’t do their job as well as they should. The result - oil gets past those rings and ‘burns up’.
      Bad news: the fix involves tearing the engine apart.
      Good news: I’ve heard stories about pouring Sea Foam in the engine. They say it’s cleaning up the rings and improving performance. You can google that - I have no experience doing it.

    So the Toyota dealership says I need a Timing cover Reseal at about 5k. Does this include Timing chain reseal? The price kinda suprised me.

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  9 місяців тому

      You must have a Prius. If so, the engine has to come out as part of the service. The timing cover on that engine has an RTV gasket that leaks near the rear. All they will do is remove the cover, scrape off the old material, add new RTV, and re-attach the cover.
      If you have a gen-one Highlander that engine does not have a timing cover that needs to be resealed. A later generation Highlander does have a timing cover with sealant.

    What would this repair cost ?? Not going to pay 4,600 to Toyota

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  Рік тому

      I don’t have the actual service time in front of me, but I would bet on 4-5 hours plus parts. $4600 is a very high quote, you should get it done for $800 to $1000 depending on where you live.

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  Рік тому

      @@timburrows4200 okay, Tim I understand now. The bad news is Toyota isn’t far off in their estimate. The entire drivetrain has to be removed from your car to work on the timing chain cover. It’s a very labor-intensive job and no matter where you take it, it’s going to cost thousands of dollars.

    Do not use blue after market gaskets. Buy authentic gaskets from Toyota. I used blue ones only to leak again in two years. The blue ones are ‘shallower’ and have different cross sections. The real ones are black in color and better in design cross sections.
