This series has been great so far. Fixing up my wife's 500 at the moment. Pretty much the same problems and faults with some dodgy garage repairs spotted along the way.
I've just purchased a gearbox from the same place you used. The service was fantastic, no issues with the gearbox absolutely first class. Thanks for the info brilliant videos

It's so much easier watching a gearbox change from the comfort of my lounge ;-) You're daughter is going to end up with a great car. My Daughter has the KA and I love driving it, just like a go kart... :-)
This just popped up on my feed, so I thought I'd give it a watch. Visited Ian yesterday to get a Fiat 500 box, really nice guy :) Its going back on today hopefully!
Hi just found this video after dropping the gearbox from my daughters Ford Ka ( same engine ) Had the gearbox refurbed and put it back in myself on the drive. The driveshafts were a bit awkward but got there in the end. I wish I had seen this video first as it looks much simpler when the bumper and rad are out of the way.
Yes that can happen. The planet gears on the diff can move. When the gearbox was delivered there should have been a cable tie or other such retainer through the gearbox and coming out the holes where the drive shafts slide in. Very easy to knock out of place if either not fitted when reconditioned or and more likely the garage removed the tie. before fitting the gearbox and the garage jiggled the box around to align the clutch input shaft. The tie should only be moved when ready to push shafts in. My gearbox recon guy warned me of this. Only solution is to take box out and strip. Where did you or they get the box from?
@@vintagesteelgarage I got it from the same place in Oldham I think you got it from.. garage said they read the instructions and didn't remove cable until the box was in.. 😭😭
Of course the garage did nothing wrong. They'd never admit that. Yes chap in Oldham. Great guy. I picked mine up and talked to him for hours about retro cars. He knew everything about the fiat gearbox. When I removed the tie I didn't even breath and carefully pushed it in. They could have had it slightly misaligned. Give him a ring tomorrow. Think he's called Ian.
Got the same job to do on a punto , 20k on the clock and diff bearing looks like its on the way out 🤷😧 will be using the same company for a recon box 👍
@@vintagesteelgarage that's good to hear , yeah it's a 2010 evo but with low mileage. Got up and down movement on the driveshaft that enters the gearbox on the nearside . Looks like iv got a week off work end of the month so might tackle it then .
Good video. One issue: You say that you don't need to take the bumper off to get the gearbox out. But, in the end, you discover it's necessary to remove the chassis member (whose bolts are already shown partly removed earlier in the video). It looks like these bolt heads on the front side of the cross member are only accessible once the bumper is removed anyway? (the nuts are welded onto the chassis member and are not turn-able from the rear side).
I am currently tying to fin a matching gearbox for my fiat500. Does anyone know if I can use the engine number to find a suitable gearbox? I found one that might fit my car but they can only provide me with the engine nr the gearbox came from....
Hello I have a Fiat 500 with a press button automatic gearbox but it will not stay in gear when selected. Can you please help me? Unfortunately I live in North Wales UK. If you can get back to me with any advice as soon as possible that would be helpful. And please can you tell me if it's a big garage job as I can get into neutral and tow it to a local garage if needed . Thank you for your help.
Box was very noisy. No didn't view car. It was bought in lockdown so couldn't travel but was sold cheap with a known gearbox issue. So I knew gearbox needed to be changed.
@@vintagesteelgaragewhat kind of noise is it? I’m fixing one up for my niece and put a new clutch in but upon driving I can hear a noise which I can only describe as a mud flap touching the tyre. Only happens while driving and disappears when clutch is engaged.

Time for me tomorrow picking out my wifes gearbox. I will split the gearbox and replace the faulty bearing. Thanks for the video 😀
Good luck. Gearbox removal was fairly straightforward
Inspired by you I managed to do our Fiat 500 gear box, got mine from PMD in Poland/Germany as I live in DK. Many thanks!
Excellent. Like most things once you're set your mind to it it's not too bad a job.
Brilliant talk through on gearbox - thanks👍
Thankyou
Wow great video :) my fiat 500 is in the garage now having a new gearbox and new clutch fitted
Good work, she's getting there. I hope Ms Vintage Steel is forever grateful to her Dad!
She hasn't even seen it yet other than on these video as she's at uni and can't come home due to lock down.
@@vintagesteelgarage Oh no, I didn't realise that. Hopefully you can get her home soon.

Hi. In sorry I'm not familiar with the auto gearbox. Try love500 on you tube. He knows a lot about fiat500s and might have had an auto.
I thought Fiat had sorted their corrosion and reliability issues. Your tin sump's rusted? Isn't that a B42 song?
Apparently even 5 year old fiat 500 have had new sumps! Eek
