First Bird Attack on my DJI mini 3 pro. Danger, panic, relief, in that order.

- 4 weeks ago I took off to get some aerial footage when I noticed a bird circling below the drone, gradually getting higher. After the first close call I went higher and into sports mode, moved about 50 metres away and went for a quick decent with the bird following. He took one final swoop before I landed safe and sound.
I don't think it would have attacked the drone as it wasn't a bird of prey, but you can never be too careful.

Been doing this for years: sports mode thrust full throttle up. I know the first thing you want to do is bring the drone back down to safety it feels like the right thing to do. But what you want to do is throttle up in sports mode quickly it's easier for a bird to dive down to catch up to the drone then it is to fly up, it takes longer for them to fly up and most birds can't catch up to the drone in sports mode when it's full throttle going up. There's also something alpha about flying up that seems to deter birds. Next time give it a try sports mode throttle up and see if it works. I've had multiple birds attack my drones over the years and sports mode throttling up works very quickly every time
Thanks for the helpful advice. I went up and sidewards in full sports mode, or full panic mode in my case 😆 I suppose the more you come across the situation, the better prepared you are.
Having just completed my RePL, this is exactly the advice the instructors gave.
What to do if your flying at max altitude
@@jivanvetrivel5995crash it and cry sitting nxt to ur mommy
@@jivanvetrivel5995 change you threshold setting to "outer space".
Well done. Birds can really spoil your day. My friend lost his Mavic 3 Pro to a bird strike three weeks ago. I am with your channel now.
If a bird gets too close. Go straight up as the bird can't go up as quickly as the drone can
Loved the suspense! Keep it up Blue Skies....
I've had the same thing happen to me once , but I sport ascended (lost him!) left the area then came back home ... was told birds can dive bomb faster then ascend .. they lose thier prespective so I was told
My local Cooper's Hawk always checking my MP3 out.
Awesome job. 👍👍👍
Ive had a few show intrest in my drone, never thought of going high, i was more concerned where it was above so if it did get knocked i could retrieve it. Thanks for sharing the comments are all very educational
Nice view❤❤
There is another video on YT about avoiding birds. Guy put strips of red reflective tape all over his larger drone. Anybody else try that? I have a dji mini 2 se on the way and birds are one of my many fears for my new little drone. And water, which after practice time i will be flying over. 😮
Until now is working just fine.
I have an M4P.
New Fear Unlocked🎖️
Make bee coloring. Ali has striped (bright yellow - black) stickers on the case. This confuses the birds and they do not dare to attack. I had similar issues. At the same time, the main problem was not the birds of prey, they were more or less calm. But the pigeons - they appeared unexpectedly. They, like kamikaze, without fear, the whole flock rushed at my drone. And a couple of times I almost lost it. After coloring "under the bee" I forgot about the problem.
the pigeons attacked my mini se once. Look on UA-cam for “Hitchcock had fewer birds” 😂
Wow
That was a close one for sure!!!!
I've got red reflective tape all over my mini 4 to help with that... still scared whenever I'm near birds!
I've done the same. Not had a chance to see if it really works, and to be honest, I'd prefer not to be in a position where it will be put to the test. But there are more birds than drones, so the time will come again.
Roll around and get on his six, change the tides on him. I've had some pretty cool rc dog fights with birds.
Do not run when bird attacks. Instead perform a altitude burst. It will confuse the bird
I first spotted it circling up when I was about 40 metres up so I did go up fast, but it followed me, so I moved quickly to the side and did as quick a descend as I could.
I bought a $10 roll of reflective tape and put strips on the arms, top, bottom and batteries for my m3p because I film 3 days a week at a construction site for almost 2 years and experience bird swoops frequently. Works very well on sunny days. The birds get an eyeful of the sun reflecting and stay away! * I got the idea from UA-cam….
Always go high when birds attack as they will try to get altitude, then dive bomb so if you go up it will confuse the bird and if you are higher it will think that you are going to attack
Love the dive bomber sound effects 😂. Living on the coast my problem is seagulls 🙁👍🏻
Liked the edit! Right on man, I had some pigeons attack my Dji Spark once, got some cool photos then got out of there quickly! Rock on man!
Just literally got my mini 3 pro less then 48 hours ago and just had a gang of seagulls attack.
Reflective tape. Working for all my drones…
Use some RED reflective tape, and stick it all over your drone.
You don't have to cover all of it, but be sure that tape stay put.
Wow thanks for sharing with us and you enjoy your Day Cheers 🍻 New Sub 👍😎
I had seagulls, a bussard and crows, which tried to attack my drone. But me, I''m a smart man and crashed the drone by myself last week by flying into a tree, so no bird can attack anymore!1!11
I spaced out my tree crash and bird attack by a couple of weeks. I'm just wondering what else could go wrong!!!!!😅
@@dronezone-media "fly away" or something like that! 😏
Risky and expensive hobby. 😀
@@ones_flow5652 😲😁😂
The crow family will often attack Birds of Prey. Many times I have witnessed Buzzards being harassed in long periods. This behaviour is common during the nesting period. Thanks for sharing
That was pretty cool...Hitchcock movie " The birds" LOL
Love the Dive-Bomb airplane sound! Haha! Awesome! Nice job! I had a peregrine falcon attack me at just below 1,740 feet as I was doing video next to the top of the Sears (Willis) Tower in Chicago. Scared the bejeezus out of me!! It wouldn't let up and I eventually had to descend and finish the shoot several months later. It took a lot of planning and $$ to organize the shoot, but that's how the cookie crumbles....😄
They say reflective tape detours birds I haven't personally tried it yet.
Yes but you have to watch that you don't put it over the GPS sensors because it is metallic.
sport mode then climb birds can't get enough energy to climb but they do on a dive go up fast and away
He was just trying to reach you about your drone’s extended warranty is all.
In the UK, Coverdrone is best insurance.
mine was attacked by a swarm of bees the last week. I was flying at about 20m and I could see dozens around it. I quickly descended to find bee parts splattered all over the place. Took me about 40 mins to clear it all off.
I've not come across bees yet, and fingers crossed I never do. I'm petrified of them 😯
@Dronezone-media they were really angry and i was a little concerned they would follow the drone down, but thankfully they didn't.
A bird nearly got my DJI Mavic air 2 last year when I was filming the entrance to the Manchester ship canal on the River Mersey. There is an altitude limit of 60meters in that location, due to flight path approaching Liverpool airport’s FRZ, the birds were too interested in my drone, I couldn’t go higher as the DJI app limited my height, I could only go down or sideways, I finished my recording and scarpered in time.👍
I had very similar experience with my M3 Pro. Several Kite birds hovering near my drone at around 30-40m height. Turned my drone into sports mode and vanished off like the Warp mode from Star Trek. Returned to home from another direction after the birds dispersed away
a drone will resemble a sparrow hawk hovering which are often attacked by crows
hi lol i live near the sea weston super mare sea gulls harras my drone and fixed wing stuff one of my gliders has bite marks on the wing and it is a 60 inch sloper like sombody said a fast gain in hight spooks the birds
I had a red kite chase my drone around once and it wanted to attack it .
I bought the drone back to me and put the drone at hip height the kite hovered about 10ft above my head and only flew away when the drone landed.
Wow, they don't scare very easy then. That sounds like one determined kite.
It looks like you encountered a falcon. The worst thing you can do is panic. That's exactly what prey does. Falcons are notorious for attacking and eating other birds. I once saw a falcon dive bomb a dove. The dove did exactly what you did. It panicked and was so afraid of where the falcon was that it flew right into the side my camper breaking its neck. the falcon then swooped down and flew off with its prey. In your video there were a bunch of birds on the ground huddled together. That's something I have learned to pay attention too. If they are acting nervous it's because they see a predator. @eleglace posted that the best thing to do was flip to sports mode and fly straight up. That works most of the time. But falcons are a little more crafty. I will not only fly up but will also bank and try to circle the falcon. This is not the behavior of prey, but another predator. I will often fly forward then quickly change directions flying backwards. sometimes you can catch a great shot as birds of prey often attack from the back. This displays characteristics that the falcon cannot do and it usually causes them to rethink their intentions. "Am I attacking prey or another predator?" I have never lost a drone to a predator, because I have learned not to panic. Drones can execute maneuvers that even human pilots cannot do. Be the UFO. Our own military pilots encounter UFO aircraft that they know they cannot compete with because their technology is superior. So be the UFO. That's what we are to the birds. It's funny really, to think that our best pilots might be the victims of some alien kid with his toy saucer (drone). the alien kid is just having fun but our pilots are left feeling totally out flown and defeated. Once that falcon realized that it can't outfly you it will most likely fly away. At least most of the time. Not much you can do though if it is already flying high above you and decides to dive. Falcons can dive at over 100 miles an hour once it selects a target. If it hits you going that speed your done. Nothing is foolproof but so far, I've been attacked but haven't been knocked out and I've been flying 5 years. I was attacked by a very large falcon over open water. There was no place to land. So I just flipped into sports mode and flew forward at full speed into the wind. The falcon is strong but cannot handle flying directly into the wind like a drone can. So I was able to pull away untouched. By the way, nice landing. Very well executed.
Another UA-camr has stated that bright red reflective tape on the outside of his drone really deters birds... ua-cam.com/video/muP8eZasOFs/v-deo.html
I saw that video and bought the reflective tape. I have been using it on my mini 4 pro, and so far so good.🙂👍
I wonder if painting big eagle eyes on it would be a deterrent. I sometimes fly by my job, and when I go up the pigeons come out of nowhere and start flying circles around it. Going straight up does work well. Took a hit once. The controller started alerting and one rotor stopped but I was able to make a controlled landing. Some feathers came drifting down like a cartoon. I stopped and restarted the rotors and everything was ok.
Use some RED reflective tape, and stick it all over your drone.
You don't have to cover all of it, but be sure that tape stay put.
Like previous comments if birds are circling the drone switch to sports mode and push straight up then get out of the way. Nice video thanks for uploading
I can't fly along the coast at this time of the year because of Oystercatchers. They are fast and vicious. Seagulls can be outflown in sport mode but Oystercatchers are crazy fast.
Oystercatchers agreed and they always have a wing man !
😅
Thanks for sharing, some great advice on the comments there, throttle up in sports mode to confuse the bird 🙂 thanks for sharing! New sub added 👌👍
It just gave you a warning lol
When I fly my drone and I see birds I always recall Danny Glover's quote in the Predator: 'Damn birds! I hate birds!'
I've learnt a lot since this episode. I could write a book on it.........but I'd rather be flying my drone 😉😅
dont worry about birds thay are just a nuisance thay wont exactly attack your drone just come close.ive had lots of bird attacks on my drone but no contact.
Thats scary.. good thing nothing happened in the end. Subd! 😊
I faced this many time,,they come close to the drone but never attack,i think the propellers sound repel them.
Use some RED reflective tape, and stick it all over your drone.
You don't have to cover all of it, but be sure that tape stay put.
They circle to climb, i just press the south but rapid, you did well spotting it ,.
Ha! Happens, man. I was in Auckland recently. Finally found a legal fly spot in the city at a park on the water. Immediately after going up, a bird started dive bombing my drone. Same one. Mini 3 pro. It's ok. Too overcast and low tide and windy for a decent shot anyways
that air plane sound loool 1:09 lol brilliant
Fantastic, if the music didn't scare you, I'm sure the "Diving Bird Sound" at 1:08 did! 😁
I remember my first time. It was a bit scary. Heaps of cockatoos wanted a piece of the DJI M3P.
It's one of the risks of flying, but some risks are worth taking.😁
This is my everyday situation flying in Gothenburg, Sweden. Is a coast town with a big Seagull and dove population. So, half my flights end up in me kamikaze diving for the ground with 4 boogies on my tail. The birds are stupid enough to gladly suicide to down a drone.
Use some RED reflective tape, and stick it all over your drone.
You don't have to cover all of it, but be sure that tape stay put.
@@yoshy2628 Does that scare away seaguls?
That was a little too close for comfort, my mates got hit last week, not like this though, his wasn’t out and out targeted that’s for sure.
I've added red reflective tape and had no issues since then 🤞One thing I have learnt is that rural located birds are more prone to attack. I've subbed to your channel. Happy safe flying buddy.
You have to assert your dominance haha 😂👊
This is hilarious! Luv the music too!😂😂😂
😂😅 well done ,great video! Thanks
For me stobe ligh is great ive already try it and it work well.
I've recently bought a couple of VIFLY strobes to see if they work. They also come in handy for night flying. 👍
Thanks for the video. Yes this is true, as i also noticed birds like pigeons and heron fly out and keep spying when i just raised the drone. They might think the drone had invaded their terrains.
Did you say "watch the birdy" !
I fear that you may have won this battle but the War has just begun!
🤣🤣🤣
good save -live to fly another day
the airplane sounds
It had to be done 😂🤣
Seagulls are my biggest issue when I fly & record on/near beaches.... I have a similar video as well, but at night...one of my most stressful flights... especially because I was above water in Atlantic City, NJ on the boardwalk... #SafeFlying #Salute
nice recovery on the drone
😮😮😮
Bakewell Birds are crazy
great video👍
Had a hawk take out my M2EA....they can be viscious and costly
Hopefully insurance can cover the majority of the loss?
Whew! Glad you got it back safely!
Clear video good👍
Love it!! SOUND Radiates Downward. I build Warning systems and the Science Rules. He didn't like your Buzz fer sure. I had a flock of the little buggers chase one of my Wings.
He or she just wanted to play with your drone or mate with it. It wasn't an eagle, vulture or a tetradactyl.
That was an awesome video, thanks for sharing. Liked and Subbed
He/she is probably protecting a nest nearby or the bird is just territorial.
Now time to see your therapist or go to a safe space 😅
🤣
Great video! Loved the story telling edit! I've heard going up is harder for the birds to keep up... not sure I would remember to do that in the situation though, I think instinct would be to bring it down! hehe.
In these situations I tend to go into the "Dad with a playstation controller" mode and press every button and hope for the best 🤣 Luckily I had watched a youtube video that week about what to do in the situation and it worked. The only problem is you have to come back down at some point, and that bird was pretty pi**ed off with the drone and hung around. It wasn't made any easier as I was on the riverbank with limited space and I'd forgotten to put a wetsuit on the drone 😉😂
@@dronezone-media 🤣🤣🤣 yeah that would have been my other worry… all that water! 😱
Toga se najviše bojim
I now use red reflective tape on my drone and have not had an incident since.
damn nice🎉
had some calls with birds flying close but today i had one flying exactly in front of the drone, it was a miracle it wasnt hit. i knew that from before but when theres a bird, fly as high as you can, this will confuse them and they wont be able to make it up there that easily to get you.
Awesome captures!!
Thank you. Luckily the bird didn't capture me 😁
@@dronezone-media 😂
Hi
I fly around a lot of seagulls and Canada geese. It's just a matter of time.
Looks like Bakewell
Correct. Some great scenery, but lots of the feathered critters. 😅
My mini four Pro just got attacked by a hawk yesterday, was terrifying…
Was that filmed at bakewell please? Thank you for the video.
Yes it was. It was a lovely sunny, windless day and I was hoping to get some good aerial shots. Way too many birds though.
Thank you for your reply, I'm going there in next couple of weeks as I've recently purchased a drone to get some footage, I'll watch out for the birds.
Nice video that. It was a crow, by the way. They are quite fearless when it comes to mobbing birds of prey, they are very protective (for good reason) of their territory.
I think I was attacked again last night. This time it was the lesser spotted laser beam bird😅 I have just uploaded the video.
If the bird collides with the drone, does the engine stop and the drone falls chaotically? This endangers what is below.
Keep the videos coming! 👍👍👍👍
I got caught up in a flock of pigeons once, nearly brought me down.
That's my worst nightmare.
love the editing ! I just got my drone and noticed severfal birds coming uncomfortably close!
The smaller birds don't pose much danger, they just want to play. The bigger birds have some kind of issues going on. As long as you keep to the golden rule of going higher and fast in stages you should be ok. Enjoy your flying, it's addictive. 🙂👍
Maybe he wanted to investigate what it was
its nesting season right now i think.
Nesting season is no longer, different types of birds nest in every season, thanx to global warming
I lost my dji m3p on a bird attack over the water..
That's always my biggest fear as I want to film more over water. Sorry to hear about your drone loss.
Top video ❤❤❤❤❤
I was always told just to stay still, they want to look to see that its not a threat and then will leave alone.
It all depends on the type of bird. A bird of prey will see a stationary drone as an easy prey and some larger birds will physically attack. Smaller birds it should be OK and the tiny songbirds think it's someone to play with. I have always been told to rapidly gain height as birds are slower going up and try to leave the area and land somewhere close by. That's what I tried to do, but was limited on safe landing places so had to move around before making a fast descent.
This is an interesting one and thanks for putting it up and showing us. The comments were also interesting and the sport mode climb makes the most sense. It is definitely something to be aware of and prepared for flying these newer mini series drones.
