The dive watch I'd buy over the Rolex Submariner: Glashuette Original SeaQ... And I am not being hyperbolic. I can see how you think I'd be being hyperbolic... BUT I AM NOT. I like this watch more than the Rolex Submariner! WHY?! The high legibility, no date cyclops, incredible finishing (possibly better than Rolex? But I haven't seen this watch on the bracelet), and it's just something DIFFERENT. This is the thinking man's luxury dive watch. YOU KNOOOOOOW?
ANYWAYS, here's me gushing about the SeaQ for 9 minutes.

I'd definitely prefer this to the Submariner. The Submariner is an amazing watch, technically, qualityly, culturally. But it's something we've seen a million times, even non-watch people would recognise it as a diver. This watch feels fresh and new, even though the style looks vintage, very nice!

I own this watch. Yes! Another level of watch but it’s just too big and chunky in the case of the Pan sea q. I sold it fo 5.6 k. Luckily I picked it up for 7k so minimised my loss. Can’t imagine paying 10 k for this piece. Only worth 5 the moment you leave the shop

I have the SeaQ blue that I bought a couple of years ago second-hand for $6.7K USD. I also have 4 Submariners, a Tudor BB58, and 2 Omega Seamasters. The SeaQ bought pre-owned certainly presents the best value. The blue dial is amazingly beautiful, the case lugs curve down to hug my wrist, it's accurate to +1 sec/day on my timegrapher (in every position), and the bracelet micro adjust beats everything from Rolex and Omega. The bezel action, though, cannot compete with modern Subs. The bracelet also does not taper. The biggest downside to me, though, was the polished center links (PCLs) on the bracelet. It just didn't look right while the case is mostly brushed. It appears that GO has changed this with the current offerings (bracelets are fully brushed now), and about an hour work with a red ScotchBrite pad converted my PCLs to fully brushed.
Overall I think that the quality, case finishing, and movement are on par with Rolex. Where the SeaQ is "better" is in value (pre-owned), dial, bracelet, and fit on the wrist. Those positives do really put the SeaQ on top of the Submariner in a technical/spec comparison in my mind, but it's close, very, very close. If you start counting in things like heritage and street cred, then the Sub comes out on top.

    Britt,
The bracelet on this watch is on another level. It has on-the-fly button-operated micro adjustment all without having to take the watch off. As you probably know, the Bracelet is arguably the most important thing when you wear a watch every day. The detail that goes into it is UNREAL!

Ahhh perhaps I should bug G-O for the bracelet variation! ;) I definitely take your point! I wanted the rubber as I don't often review rubber straps aaaand it is the historically more accurate version with the Spezimatic. ;) But you're so right - I think the bracelet is more what modern buyers would be more interested in!

I wasn’t too keen on the bracelet myself tbh. The clasp is fantastic but didn’t like the polished centre links, the general feel on the wrist was ok but didn’t strike me to be as well executed as an oyster bracelet and the worst part has to be the end links. The obvious clash between the finish of the case and the end links wouldn’t let me enjoy the watch, it’s so jarring. So I would much rather wear it on a strap myself. The only other point of annoyance on this piece is that it lacks the silicon hairspring that you find on the pano date and the chrono. Otherwise I love this piece, it’s really special.

@@tiderider yes, it's absolutely amazing and there's honestly not any other divers out there that I'd prefer over it, at any price point. I've mostly been wearing it on the bracelet because it's just so darn good with that clasp (same as on my IWC Mark XX, as they use the same bracelet manufacturer). I specifically bought it on a strap to avoid the polished center links, and then ordered the fully brushed bracelet separately.
The reed green is extremely versatile. I had looked at the black dial too, but wouldn't want to give up the applied hour markers. The font on the "6" is one of my favorite details - it's lovely.
Sure that pano date version is amazing but I could never deal with that size, personally. The 39.5 mm version is perfect. If you've experienced a Black Bay 58, the sizing is very similar, but the case shape and finishing is much more refined, making it look and wear thinner (compared to Tudor's infamous slab sides).
If you do decide to get one, I highly recommend picking up all 3 strap options from GO. The watch also works great with plenty of aftermarket straps too, but the GO quality is amazing.

  • @finesse49

What really needs to be mentioned here that was not addressed in the video is service, warranty and repair. Whilst the GO is far superior in terms of finishing etc if something goes wrong you might end up having to have it sent back to Germany (despite it being Swatch group) which will take super long time. GO warranty is 2 years versus Rolex 5 years.
The other one major thing which almost nobody mentions is on the GO bracelet, you have vertical brushing paired up to the horizontal brushing on the lugs. Once you see this you are like WTF… despite the GO having far superior finishing and craftsmanship than Rolex, this is a major thing if you are bothered by such details.

There’s something about that shade of fauxtina, the arrow minute hand the puffiness of the numerals and the fully graduated bezel is just beautiful.
Is it better than the Rolex? I don’t think so. But I have the sub covered. I think it’s a great addition to a collection with the sub, in the same way the Tudor FXD is!
That said, the movement simply isn’t as good the 3235/3230 in the Submariner.
One thing to note, it’s often much smarter to get the watch on the bracelet and then order the rubber strap, it’s a lot cheaper than the other way around. In this instance I’m not actually sure it will be! Check with the AD, might be the same price due to the deployant!

Good call on taking a look at the SeaQ. Although the price is eye opening (at retail), I saw these at an AD during a trip to Vegas and let me say I was not disappointed when I saw them in the metal. I definitely cannot say that for all the watches I saw on that trip. Although I personally would love if it was maybe 1mm bigger, 39.5 isn't bad at all and should work with a lot of wrists. The 43.2mm version with the big date is more Sea Dweller territory in size. More than I need. If somebody doesn't like the fauxtina, the blue dial is the way to go. It's certainly cheaper than a blue dial Sub, which only comes in white gold. My one criticism is I wish they had the pretty movement on display like they do with the 43mm version.
The only sticking point in my mind is the dial style was not uncommon back in the '60s and although you're not getting the movement, nor probably the finishing level, the Wolbrook Skin Diver Automatic comes in a not much bigger 40mm size with a 60hr Miyota movement for a very reasonable price, with tropic straps or beads of rice bracelets. Would I get that much more satisfaction out of the GO? Maybe, but I'm not so sure. I say that as a person with a collection going from affordable through new Rolex.

I like it better than any of the ceramic subs, but only the 39mm version. The others, though nice, are just too big for me. The 39mm SeaQ has been on my radar for a while now. I have yet to see it person.

The Sea Q is a cool watch, but the sub still looks more classic. If we’re going away from the Sub, then the JLC Polaris on rubber still beats the Sea Q.
The Polaris just must be my favorite rubber strapped watch. Tremendously underrated.

I’m not much for divers, they simply don’t interest me much. That might due partly to the fact that most tend to be large watches and I’ve grown bored in that regard. At this size and proportions, this gets my attention.
Let me get this out of the way- the Sub is dull as dishwater. So I think there’s a handful of more interesting watches if not objectively better.
Of the two SEAQ’s from GO, this one falls well short of the larger watch in terms of spec. Their Panorama Date function. Is awesome, the movement on display in the larger watch is a better movement and stunning.
The smaller watch is more what I’d personally look for in a tool watch/dive watch. The engraved caseback looks great, it’s just going to wear great. I’d prefer this niceties featured on the 43mm version on something different, though also smaller.
The vertical brushing is very much growing on me. Beautiful case as a whole. I tend to read that color choice for lume as simply just another color- note, I own a black dial Railmaster so it’s nothing new for me.
As for price, it’s way too much money relative to what I’d be willing to spend for that watch. I’m not a spec weenie, but the movement is dated.
This is one to buy pre owned for sure. I just checked C24 for a quick check, didn’t see much evidence of them taking a huge knock from full retail. Maybe a couple deals here and there. From previous research, I think GO does a bit better than average in terms of dropping in value. There are saving to be found, but not huge. Still worth it.
    Good review.

You are preaching to the converted here Britt - this is my wife's daily watch. She loves the large numerals because her eyesight is certainly not 20/20. She has the black face on the rubber strap and as mentioned, its very much 'stealth wealth'. The only people that have ever commented on it were watch nerds who were very impressed seeing it on a ladies wrist no less. I wish it had a see through caseback (the red gold does but it becomes quite heavy in that variant and certainly loses the stealth aspect - its very very luxurious looking). As her daily, the low power reserve doesn't bother her but it is a weak point of this movement. I also think they should be upping their warranty period to at least 3-5 years. That said, I have the bi-color SeaQ panodate so I tick all the boxes and I am not that concerned on the warranty front. Rolex are boring poser watches in comparison....sorry Rolex fanbois - and the AD games just make the brand not worth bothering with as you can't actually buy the watch you want at retail.

Submariner = real Jewelry; SeaQ = authentic Toolery.
I would totally choose the SeaQ over the Sub!
Great watch that doesn't have to try to impress -- by, say, insisting that ADs call it a "timepiece" rather than a watch, or by having text all over its dial -- in order to authenticate itself.
And your occasional vocal serenades are always a treat. 😉🤩 Merry Christmas to you, Britt! 🎅

Rolex Sub: Living in past, like your Grandad, telling you how he used to be the best looking young man in the Golf Club bar? Nowadays wears too much jewellery and EDT. Gl'arse'hut CQ. The Cliff Richard of watches. Did he have a nip and a tuck, or did he just never age? Pelagos 42. The Jude Bellingham of watches. Perfect in every way, and you love him, and watching him play, even though he's playing against your team today, and will definitely score a hatrick, but love is love!

It maybe that the hands are green when glowing and the numerals blue or the other way round but it was a bad match for me.
