The style of the game was made to look retro in the sense to look like an art style that would fit in with things like doom and quake since it's designed to be a what people have called the genre "Boomer Shooter"
honestly, a lot of modern game development is obsessed with the "Graphics arms race" and photo-realism as a first priority over meaningful art direction or cohesion these days. A boring and poorly composed background with incompetently choreographed actors isn't going to look beautiful just because I can make out more of the pores on their nose. As well, there are plenty of art styles that just don't really benefit much from upping the graphical intensity. It should be evidently a matter of diminishing returns, but everyone is OBSESSED with pushing the envelope, and the consumer's mind is practically brainwashed into thinking that the scale of good looking is a matter of how many particle effects can be rendered at once.
There's actually lore for this as well, the reason why everything looks so low quality is because V1 traded their graphics for more processing speed. (Or something along those lines)
Max0r should not be taken seriously. He's like the clown at a funeral. Like doom, you heal by fresh blood spilt on you, each weapon has a few variations, like the pistol being either a charge or the coin, and it's a fucking shitshow and it's amazing.
Hit box is pretty good tbh. A certain enemy has a head on its shoulder and hitting that counts as a headshot. Most weapons are hitscan, but the shotgun is a projectile, which is why it can be punched
The shotgun parry thing was originally a bug, but the dev and the community both loved it. They added points for doing it and everything. Also youre talking about the visuals, if you actually play it trust me it isnt bad looking, Max0rs editing just doesnt let you see it very well

6:55. So quick thing regarding the coins: They have 2 “states” as I call them. Coin “Flash” and “Sing”. For “Flash” the coin flashes after a quarter of a second after it’s tossed and when shot with the default Marksman revolver, it will split the bullet and hit two enemies at once. For “Sing”, you can hear the coin “sing” after about a second after it’s in the air and when shot splits the bullet and hits two enemies at once. Also, the default Railcannon and the Malicious Railcannon can be redirected with the coins to increase their damage. Edit: Oh, one more thing. Punching the Shotgun bullets was, at first, a glitch which was then turned into a feature cause it was fun. The devs even made it part of the style meter called “Projectile Boost”.
The "Cancerous Rodent / Very Cancerous Rodent" and the dungeon in which they're found is a reference to Civvie 11, a youtuber who mainly covers retro FPS games.
There is a lot of nuance in Ultrakill For example, coins. Basic level is shooting them in the air, making the shot home in on the nearest(?) enemy's weakpoint. Intermediate level is shooting the coin when it glimmers for a split second, adding additional AoE damage, just like when you parry. Advanced level is throwing multiple coins through and ahead of the enemy so that the shot would go through the enemy several times, bouncing between the coins. You can also juggle a coin with your punch, multiplying damage it will deal when you shoot it (previously didn't have a cap on the multiplier so people would juggle it in cutscenes and instakill bosses)
Yeah some people also mentioned it’s more akin to doom as well than souls and i definitely see it. I think i saw the giant boss HP bars and immediately thought souls 😂
7:51 The whole thing with punching the core eject from the shotgun was originally a bug with the coding but when the dev found out about it from someone who were playing the game, it was simply kept as a gimmick.

Just in case no one mentioned it, you may be confusing two kings. There is King Midas, who was cursed with the golden touch. And then there is King *Minos* (me-nos, like in Minotaur, who is literally Bull of Minos), who had the labyrinth with the bull monster inside.
