Lets hope that the future Volvos are as great as this one! The XC90 is definitely the best looking car in its class. But at the same time I miss the iconic 5cyl sound. Like some other commenter, I also subscribed your channel after seeing the documentary. Thank you!

About the XC90, I would buy this over the Merc and BMW no question. But over the Audi? I'm not sure. The quality and refinement of the Q7 is class leading. Also the manufacturers need to do better with the tailgate sensitivity. So far the Bentley Flying Spur is better. So you have to pay over 200,000 for a safe tailgate? The manufacturers need to start watching these reviews. Perhaps we should send them the links.

This Volvo XC90 is one of my favourite SUV (with BMW SAC), specially in R-Design with Matte Blue colors! It look very powerfull and refined at the same time. A very good job done by the Volvo's team.
I hope they will present the others new models quite soon!

I see some strange white horizontal line in the headrest of the car, what is that?
I hope the engineers find a more powerfull diesel because the 225 hp is a little to less for the big car. I appreciate their choice for 2.0litre 4cylinders to help the envorinment but they will need to improve the power of their engines.
Like they are now working on a 450hp 2litre petrol, (wit no help from an electric engine), they hopefully can get a 300hp diesel engine with 550-600Nm or maybe a diesel hybrid(but that they wont do I think)

Actually you can ajust the steering for each mode, so just ajust the confort mode as your whishes. :)
i haven't tried the infotainment system myself but vath i have seen from it would also like a bit more buttons and knobs. an the shape of the top half of the infotainment system vere the screen is it's just to big and rounded for my taste

A few comments/questions:
- Did you get a chance to try out the Adaptive Cruise Control and Pilot Assist? They are fantastic in my opinion.
- When talking about the third row in the Q7 did you think that the XC90 is smaller by comparison?
- Did you see any technical hitches or quirks being that this is a first model year car.
+Rahul Verma ACC works flawlessly. Pilot Assist seems a lil strange to me. For what would u use it? It works until 40 kmh and you can let of hands from steering wheel about 20 seconds

Hi Thomas - the Pilot assist is very good in slow stop and go traffic that's common in the NY and LA metros. The good thing about it is that it actually follows the car in front of you and steers the car in addition to stopping and starting. The ACC on the other hand relies on you to steer and bounces you between the road lines.
Is it possible to refine the steering wheel responsiveness through the customization options in the main console? I was really impressed that the heated seats could be adjusted so much and so it made me wonder. Thanks for the review Thomas, as always it was very enjoyable to watch.

o one more comment. i got a bit disappointed ven i couldn't see a bit more in detail ven you talk about the center console storage an the glove box. you have maybe a reason why and also it is quite easy to find out how its looks some other way. otherwise very very good vidio :)
Another great, real world review, thank you. Prior to ordering my new SUV I thought I would buy a hybrid but something you said in one of your reviews caused me to reconsider. You mentioned that when a hybrid vehicle runs on electric power alone the combustion engine is just redundant extra weight and vice versa. From what I have determined after watching your numerous hybrid reviews, most hybrid cars are really only cost effective at speeds below 50 mph. As I only travel 3000 miles a year now, 80% of which is at speeds of 50
- 70 mph, I have concluded that a hybrid is not suitable for me. If I am correct in my conclusion you have saved me the extra cost of a hybid car and I am grateful.
hey pete, thanks for the feedback. The Porsche Panamera Hybrid was the first vehicle that actually also scored better fuel figures even if the battery is empty. So it seems that vehicles are evolving there. Clearly, I dont see much sense in a XC90 T8 Hybrid, unless you charge the car every time after driving it and predominantly commute short ways to work.
For you, also a fully electric car could make sense if you dont drive so many miles ?

Yes Thomas, I agree with you: but the current electric cars within my budget do not have the range. I need an electric car with 150 miles range on a motorway in real winter conditions, without charging and under £27000.00. I was unable to find one. Additionally, my wife wanted me to buy an SUV to replace my saloon, so my choice was limited. We will change her VW UP for an electric car, though.

I'm only 15 minutes in, but had to stop to say I really dislike Audi / BMW / Mercedes interiors. They seem to have a love affair with that awful soft touch rubber paint that peels off everything after a VERY short time, it looks awful. I'd take the hard plastic buttons in this any day over that rubber rubbish.
I'm going to watch the rest now, this is the first review of yours that I have watched and must say it's very good. Clear and informative, slow enough to follow. :)

I like the central screen. It's big but not excessive unlike Tesla.
In the SQ7 review Thomas preferred the Audi adaptive cruise control if you had to steer. Is that still true, or are the Volvo and Mercedes cruise controls now better? Pity you can't have the Q7s handling with XC90s looks!

Hello car and Autogefühl fans.I would like to ask Thomas if he can make a video explaining the different type of brake systems, I think this will be an interesting subject a lot of people will be interested in.(Drilled and slotted disk,if 6 or 8 piston brakes are better,ceramic or steel brakes which is which and WHY!!!!).Yesterday i was looking for an video comparing and explaining why for example slotted disk are better than drilled but there was surpassingly nothing. Autogefühl is famous for its detail videos ,i think this will be an interesting one to add to its collection.

Great review Thomas, for the price though do you feel it was worth the money? imho alot of the standard switch gear apart from the diamond ones and interior finish just doesnt justify the price tag? looked very rough and plasticy ford build quality. also thanks for your usual "work out" but why are so many manufacturers opting for no more spare wheel, id take that over seven seats and useless understorage any day. thanks once again for the great review, keep up the good work!

I'm an owner of old 2001 S80 with it's "male" steering settings, and I felt a big dissapointment in new XC90 crystal and airy steering at normal mode. They need to put 4th (sport) mode in it.

9I do like Volvo cars and even own one (2011 s60) and I have to admit that they are pretty impressive but I wouldn't waste my money again on one and I will tell you why.first of all when you buy a car like this you look at the price and the what the competition can offer.in my case the s60 came as a solution for my bmw 3 series.at the beginning I was thrilled because well...it was something else...bigger car, different design, front wheel traction because I really needed a car that behaves well on snow and Volvo's will not disappoint you on that but in time you will see some differences ...huge ones even for example:Built quality, I don't know how the germans do it but u take a bmw audi Mercedes etc and once you are inside one you are blown away ..the steering wheel , seats, shifter dash board, everything is pure quality..you will not have the same fealing in a Volvo.LOOK CLOSE at the interiour of this XC90 and you will see the leather seats wich are gorgeous but when you look again you will see that the leather is already deformed.look at the 09.08 min and you will see...and I am sure that this car doesn't have more then 10.000 km on bord.imagine it at 50.000.I oftenly take my s60 drive it on country road (tarmac,gravel) because my work demands it and I get scared when I hear all of those small gravel smashing into my car.it's like the car has no isolation at all..I never has this fealing on the bmw.There is the engine quality also wich to me is very important.My Volvo went to the garage for the alternator, turbo and now with the last oil change my mechanic found metal pouder on the gas filter..he told me that this a sign that one or more injectors are not working properly and I should expect roblems soon...I never has one problem with my bmw...it only went to the garage for regular maintainence.Finally I think that everyone should buy the car that they like the most and that they can afford but be carefull because u pay what you get!!!I wanted to get a XC60 because I need a bigger car now and I really like it but finally l will go for the bmwx3.....
While I like the design on the exterior and interior, I can't help but wonder how much it will cost to repair. The air suspension is nice to deal with off road situations, I think the XC90 will remain on-road the majority of the time. Thomas, is it worth it? Did it make it feel better than with the standard suspension? As you all ready know my feelings about all of the electronic screens inside the car, Thomas. I enjoy the simplicity but the lack of hard controls has me worried. Any electric gremlins leaves a majority of the car unusable. What if you are wearing gloves? Does the central screen even respond?
Overall, a very nice car. I think it shows what the future of automobiles hold. Smaller displacement engines using modern technology to keep pace with V6 and V8 engines. The T8 is the test I'm waiting for.

***** Of course they do! They only want you driving the most expensive model... Not to accuse manufacturers of "cheating", certain brands will equip their press models with higher quality tires.
Just wondering, this or the range rover? I know that you reviewed the SE in your review of the range rover, but here in the UK we don't get the SE or HSE and in the last two years they have really improved the little niggles in them that you mentioned (such as the squeaks etc) so they don't happen. And the base model here in the UK comes with a lot more equipment as standard than the SE (obviously) so I was just wanting to hear your views on that (apparently the base model here in the UK with one or two options is all the car you'll ever need after asking a few friends who have them). I do like the XC90 but I do prefer the RR, but there is of course a big price difference. I don't like the Cayenne or Audi Q7 and if Mercedes would improve everything about their dealers in the UK, then they would be a consideration.
+TSPF2 Hey! Big advantage of the XC90 is that in the lower trim levels, you can get it with cloth seats. Range Rover is _only_ available with genuine leather seats which is a dealbreaker. ***** Hi, I remember watching your opinions on the cloth and leather seats. So I can totally see why you would prefer the XC90 because the amount of bulls hides that go into the UKs base model range rover is ridiculous. Also, a few years back, I was speaking to a guy who worked at VW and he said that the old tuaregs were terrible or in his words "scrap", which kind of put me off them, but after seeing your review it has made me change my mind completely of the new tuareg. Now the XC90 does come with lower trim levels, but I wouldn't like it to be barren, by that I mean with no technology or kit on them.
+TSPF2 Sure I understand. Volvo XC90 comes already with good standard equipment, especially as for safety. You can configure one with Kinetic trim level and then add your extras. Be it in a package or singularly, you pay for all extras anyway...

What a beautiful car! I'm not sure about the offroad package. A bit to busy for me I think. The German car show Grip named the interior quality "on Bentley level". What do you think of that Thomas? Because you say Audi and Mercedes are better, but you don't explain in which way. If I compare the plastics of the cupholders compare to the nice solution in this XC90, I would think the opposite. Also, as I mentioned before in an other video I often come across thin plastics in Audi's. A bit of pressure causing cracking sounds.
And about the price, here in the Netherlands the last generation of the XC90 was in basic trim more expensive than the BMW X5. That really suprised me, because it was sold 4 times (!!) more than the X5, which was behind the XC90 the best selling SUV in the Netherlands.
In my opinion this is not only the best looking SUV in the segment, but also the most logical. There is a strong philosophy behind the car, which I miss in for example the Q7. A philosophy about keeping is simple and clean, just like the last generation. For sure it will be the best selling SUV in the Netherlands again.

+Autogefühl I don't see it. The interiors are different, but I don't see the better materials or finish in the Audi. The only thing that strikes my eyes are the ridiculous cupholders.
Sometimes I get the feeling that you already made your decision about the car before reviewing it and then have some sort of selective perception. When reviewing this Volvo and coming across a button that doesn't matches the level of other buttons: "here you can see that it is less superior than a Q7"
On the other hand with the review of the A4 avant there was something with the back of the car that didn't matched the rest of the car quality-wise which you reviewed as "that doesn't matches the superior quality of the car". Kind of hard to explain but I think you know what I try to say.
Just some positive criticism. Still you are wat ahead of the other UA-cam reviewers.

ai have heard that a lover trim level of the xc90 ver supposed to come out sometime but i didn't know ven. So ven you talk about another headlight then the tors hammer i got a bit surprised because it was just yesterday i looked at the swedish volvo car website (www.volvocars.com/se/) so i went to the german website and guess my way thru the german language i first of al fund that you have a completely different customize my car website and second of al you have d4 diesel engine, different head ligts, fabric seats, kinetick and mommentum trim level and 5 seats configuration setting. so ye you learn something new everyday. thx an keep on doing the best in depth car reviews

One thing I cant understand and as I have ask the Volvo seller is .... How come they use that small Brakes it look like toys in this big rims ... Compare to Audi they have 6 piston calipers in the front.
I think the brake should be much better it Volvo use bigger calipers. It should be bigger at least in T6 and T8 is my opinion.

I agree with you, the XC90 is a handsome brute to look at from the exterior.
But the interior… oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!
The overall impression is "cheap" and tacky.
The steering wheel is just awful, as is that ugly, Ford-like central console with a laggy Samsung-like display, that is a cross between a Tesla and a Smartphone.
I can see all the Yummy-mummies going mad for one of these for the school-run.
But for me, the Audi Q7 is the king of this segment (I can even see a hints of the [albeite smoothed-off] Bentley Bentayga from the side profile).
I love the understated exterior of the Audi and the interior is so beautifully designed and executed that you just want to stay inside and marvel at it's quality. No other car in this segment comes close to the Audi Q7's interior design and quality.
But there again, it would not do for us all to have exactly the same tastes in all things, would it?
+OldVillain The interior trim on the inscription level surpasses Audi in my opinion. This is only the base trim, which is functional, but priced accordingly. It is a world of difference with the Napa leather and wood inlays.

The Inscription one we have shown in the T8 is great though but again a lot of leather is wasted. Probably as i said we can take another look at the T8 R-Design interior quite soon
+Meckara +Autogefühl Apologies, I should really have made myself much clearer and admintted that it all comes down to personal taste (some might say bias - but I believe a bias towards design harmony).
The Volvo, whilst no doubt comfortable and using "premium" materials, has not been designed to give anything other than the appearance of quality (in my view). It ticks the boxes of a standrad shopping list of luxury items to find within a luxury S.U.V..
But, it lacks the aesthetic harmony and beauty that the Audi designers have managed to achieve through a deep understanding of the study of ergonomics (in the widest sense of the word - the look, feel and the combined character and atmosphere [ambiance]).
The dashboard, streeting wheel and layout of the controls of the XC90, does not have that harmonious balance. It looks as though different people designed each thing and lacked a master to pull the whole thing together., like Audi's Marc Lichte.
Even on the Inscription option, it lacks that harmony and clean, efficient beauty that the Audi does.
But, externally, Volvo have done a superb job; it looks exactly like a premium S.U.V. should look. I would agree, that it is more appealing/imposing than the Q7.
(But none can match the masterfully imposing Bentley Bentayga - will you review that beast on Autogefühl Thomas?)

This is almost a new car right? Why does the left side of the seat @ 7:53 look a bit worn already? Is this some chinese leather? (volvo is now a chinese company in case you didnt know) This is something that is normal in a Kia but in a €100k+ car its unacceptable.
Indeed Animal skin sucks in every aspect. Go for fabric, alcantara or high-class leatherette as shown in the Tesla Model X
The Chinese only fund Volvo with cash besides that Volvo vehicles are designed and built in Sweden

Please don't take this personal. You are a great car reviewer but you are not the owner. I have owned this vehicle for over a year and the infotainment unit performs very well and once you get used to it you go thru the easy uncomplicated menus as easily and quickly as you would your cell phone. I always thought the volume panel was an unnecessary after thought because the volume and track control is also on the steering wheel. But I love tech. Some people don't.

The stereo system is absolutely horrible. Sounds like a box, the shittiest system I've ever heard. Anyone claiming it's a good system is easily manipulated

Autogefühl oh yes, it's terrible. Just a fancy name, otherwise an empty sound. Definitely not worth the money. It's strange because the previous models had much better sound quality
