I would love to go back in time and see Louis Prima, Sam Butera, and Keely Smith live in Las Vegas.
Some people talk down on Gia as if she tried to copy Keely. Gia didn't. Gia had her own style that was much different than Keely. I loved Keely, I loved Gia. Gia and I were great friends, and I miss her dearly. Lastly, I want to thank my dad who introduced me to Louis Prima and Sam Butera with the Witnesses. Listening to Louis and Sam with my dad in New Orleans bonded us in a big time way when I was just a teen. Dad, may you rest in RIP, as well as all in the Prima band. I miss you all dearly.

Wow, I haven't seen this video of the band before. Louis has such great phrasing and swing. He and his seems to be perched in between the black and white bands of the day. Very cool.
You can’t beat Louie who was a musical genius along with Sam, Keely, and the Witnesses. Long live their music! We love it!

I saw Sammy many times in AC and Vegas with Keely Smith. One of the greatest tenor sax players of that generation! If anyone has any videos of the Prima big band please post.

Lack of public relations, maybe? It certainly wasn't lack of talent.
I guess because most of his work was on stage.
That rendition of Night Train is just too spicy, too grungy, too much for national TV.
Half the (protestant) religious denominations in the country would boycott the network if they broadcast him to the small towns. That's why this brilliant world class performance was broadcast on WABC, and not on ABC.

WOW! Louis Prima playing Hank Williams.
My Sicilian grandmother owned an Italian restaurant, in Westerly, RI, back in the 30's, 40's, and 50's. I was a little kid back in the 1950s, and 90% of her Sebring juke box was Louis Prima until Antonio Benedetto came out with losing his heart in Frisco!

What a band . One of a kind and so many different influences in the mix too . They were all top class musicians and also entertainers . Louis of course was totally influenced by Louis Armstrong but he found his own style out of that . I wish I had seen this band live .

The big huge food and bev man joe louis and the big huge pit boss at the bar. That s it for me gabriel but i don t care where i have to go to hear it. My dad brought "The Wildest" LP home when I was 7; he played it over and over...it became a touchstone for me my whole life..I'm 72 now and still play it regularly to recapture that feeling I had as a kid...

Sam's rendition of Night Train is the only one worth listening to, and watching him perform it is the icing on the cake. Louis had such a great band, and I love Gia! She's into it and all together they had a very entertaining show. So glad I can see videos now. The first time I heard Louis sing was for The Jungle Book. I was born in 1953, so he was a bit before my time. I love my evenings watching them.

Alan, thank you so much for posting this video. I think it’s a disgrace that Louis Prima’s children haven’t restored all of this footage and presented it to the world with the respect and integrity that it deserves. Louis and Sam are two of my favourite all time jazz/blues/rock and roll heroes. Thank you for sharing this and for making my heart so happy. This is the closest we will ever get to a live concert with them both, 🔥💚

They are trying, in 2010 they came out with Louis Prima: In Person (DVD) but I don't think they have enough high quality footage to make another release.

I have to say in watching these old clips that much of the magic of Louis Prima and his band evaporated when his former wife Keely Smith left and Gia Maione joined him. It's not that Gia lacked talent or stage presence. But to me, it appears that Gia was largely emulating Keely. And there can only be one Keely. Keely had that wonderful voice, comedic talent, and special something that combined with Louis created great entertainment and music, and that just can't be replicated. Even Louis isn't the same here as he was with Keely. As I understand it, not too long after Louis and Keely performed at John F. Kennedy's inauguration ball (on Frank Sinatra's recommendation), Keely finally had enough of Louis's philandering and divorced him. And then Keely sowed a few wild oats of her own afterward and had affairs with Frank Sinatra and Clint Eastwood.

I didn't realized how hot keely was until I looked at Mia. Mia is a solid 6. Kelly was firmly planted in 8 territory...with a boost in quirkiness she was a 10

Keely was the best ever, but Gia was no slouch. That melody on Love Is Where You Find It is not easy and she nails it.
What I wouldn't give to have lived in a time like this where people aren't on their phones, social media stops at whats on tv tonight, and everything is just about having fun and getting by in the cold world together. Sure was this time period flawed too? Absolutely, but at least the evils of the time were being fought. In today's world the evils aren't just not being fought, they are being embraced, loved and practiced nearly every day all day by everyone. We gotta do something drastic together as a species to fix this or it is all going out the window sooner or later. Technology is the new religion, instagram, facebook, twitter, etc. are the new church, and Elon musk and Jeff bezos are the new jesus and I couldn't be more sick to my stomach waking up every day knowing that in the back of my mind.
You're right that today certainly isn't perfect, but on the other hand, the Internet can be used for good... to preserve these broadcasts and share them with people of all ages around the world (how do you think this 21-year-old Australian with no relation to Messrs. Prima or Butera discovered this footage?)
@@alansmithee7730 As a software engineer for a major US corpo believe me, the internet is good but we are squandering its potential. I've written more useful code in my spare time for side projects and open source than I ever have for my job because all companies want to use the internet for is sucking every last dollar they can out of your pocket. The amount of brainpower silicon valley and major corporations put into optimizing useless operations is continues to blow my mind. To give you and example, I was once working on a finance team optimizing sales tax calculation, data storage and reporting for a company that made over 100 billion a year in revenue. The entire system was going through a "revitalization effort" and my team (one of about 10 in this specific finance group) was focused on just the core calculation process. Our team had 13 members each making 150k + bonus + stock + benefits. Only about 3 had ever put code into the codebase. Through the whole process we never changed the core calculation service, which consisted of a mixture of C code from the late 1980s and early 1990s we purchased in the early 2000s from a company that was defunct in 2016 and some java code making calls to that written in 2009-2012. It was all dogshit. Higher ups were scared about perfomance issues. We were running 1000+ instances of this on edge as part of our entire chain of transaction custody. It was a complete and total disaster. It turned out after some extensive load testing we were running about 950 excess instances and we didn't have to change any of our core codebase. This was an initiative that lasted for 4 years, cost 10s of millions of dollars, and 10s of thousands of developer hours. This is what corporations spend most of their time on, and what most professional software engineers are doing. It is like taking a doctor and having him instead sew cuts in oranges all day every day because it is the only way to get paid. Don't get too starry eyed about the power of the internet, it was much closer to the ideal in the late 90s until the end of the 00s, since then, every day we slide further and further away from it being a net positive to society. I honestly hardly use technology outside of my job, youtube is what I spend most of my time on for entertainment and such, but I stay the fuck away from 99.99999999% of the internet.

Fantastic! Such beautiful talent and style. A bygone era unfortunately as the music industry has dumbed down to the lowest common denominator where image trumps talent. Elton John was correct when he predicted this with the advent of MTV et al.
No one does that new Orleans swing like Louie BUT Gia does not fit. Sorry.there was only one Keely Smith and together they were the greatest. But he will always be the greatest singer and entertainer EVER. RIP LOVE YA AND KEELY . GOD BLESS U BOTH. .💔🥰🙏😥
