Lot's of great singers today, if you know where to look. I guess the closest analogy today would be Beyonce. I haven't listened to her enough to tell, but I don't think she can do what Bassey could do...and I don't think Bassey could do what Cassandra Wilson does. Bassey was a broad/loud Vegas style singer with a nasal timbre and exaggerated vibrato, similar to Ethel Merman. Like Merman, I get the impression she sang unamplified a lot in her youth. Make no mistake, I still think she was great, but there are many great singers today under the radar.
Totally agree with you! No auto tune here, no gimmicks, etc.. just pure talent, singing and entertaining! You can tell it takes a lot out of her! Another great performance of hers is Talk of the Town, 1972.

She has an impeccable voice and diction. The greatness of a singer is when you can understand clearly the words they are singing. Nancy Wilson was another singer with impeccable voice clarity and diction in her performances.

Back in the 1960's and 1970's it was about the song writer, singer and performer. Many produced their own music too like Buddy Holly or Led Zeppelin. That was talent. Today music is about a big voice, because of all these singing shows on TV. And even then their voices are no match for the likes of Julie Andrews or Shirley Bassey. Bassey's voice has personality and when she gets on a note, man, she's like a laser beam.

I was a fan from the time I saw my first ever Bond movie and who knew that I would be so blessed to actually meet this iconic superstar - which she is both on & off stage. But she is also a vibrant, confident diva in every good sense of the word, and is always the consummate artist, yet also with an endearing humility and Welsh charm that I defy anyone to resist! Shirley you are forever and ever brilliant and enduring as your signature song!
