Canadian Tries Chip Butty (Fry Sandwich) for the First Time

  • After gaining a British following on the back of my Branston Pickle video, I decided to try and recreate some British foods we don't normally see here in the Canadianas. I realize after filming, editing, and scheduling this video, no one calls it a chippie butty. This comes from ignorance mostly, but also the confusion that you get your chips from a chippie and they sell butties. This doesn't come up in my everyday life or even in passing, so apologies for messing up the name, hopefully you find this video entertaining regardless. The alterations to the original sandwich were my ideas, if I get inspired from someone or something else, I will mention it. I have enough integrity and self respect that I don't actually need to steal ideas.

We usually put ketchup or brown sauce on them. However, given the reaction, I really must try a butty with pickle or marmite!

When I get a chip butty from the fish and chip shop I ask for a carton of gravy too, and add some to the chip butty and dip the butty into the rest, yum yum! The drawback to eating it this way is it is really messy to eat, but tastes so good.

I can see that being really good. We have a chain here called Swiss Chalet, they are known for rotisserie chicken with fries and gravy. It comes with a roll, you pop it open add chicken and fries, then dip it in the gravy, so good.

A chip butty, or chippie butty is a quick thing, if you've nipped to the chippie, to have. However, I've never put Marmite or Branston Pickle on one, as they are normally a very quick addition. However, if you like either of them it's something worth trying, so I will; well done. Now I'm thinking of putting a fried egg on one as well!

You should not be allowed by law to put chips in bread at home. You can only get a chip butty from the chip shop or chippy and the reason is "bits" (or sometimes know as scraps, if you live outside of Yorkshire) which you cannot produce at home, these are small bits of batter than fall into the fryer as they are cooking the fish and are mandatory whether your buying fish and chips, fish butty, chip butty or a bag o chips. Also only condiment allowed Heinz Tomato Ketchup. Sorry to be so tyrannical but I am from Yorkshire so don't mess with the chip butty. 😀

In North America it's a different system, chips and fish are kept in seperate areas, we also use a two stage cooking. This produces a completely different texture than what you're used to. Even "authentic" British chip shops here don't make chip butty, it just wouldn't sell here.

It's just Chip Butty, I like your idea of Marmite or Branston Pickle additive, I will have to try them, they are also nice with a cheese spread on one side of the bread instead of butter, also Tomato or Brown sauce works well too.

A ‘Chip butty’ is a base layer and can be tailored to fit. I can see a Canadian liking marmite with it along Poutine lines. I’ve never heard of Marmite or Branston on a chip butty though. Possible you’ve got a good claim on that score!.

A few more chips would help your sarnie. You're not eating the butty as a meal, rather a snack. No need to overdo it.

A chip butty should be made with HOT chips so it melts the butter. For a pucker butty.

I realise that you may be misunderstanding @alfredbearman's suggestion, and are taking him TOO literally, perhaps (?). (FYI: He was NOT referring to the 'fresh sauce' put on a pizza base). I do KNOW our (UK/IRISH) term 'tomato sauce' is NOT commonly used by Canadians in the same way...
We say it to mean 'KETCHUP' (Southern US - sometimes; 'CATSUP'). We will commonly ask for some 'brown' &/or 'red' sauce (meaning HP &/or tomato sauces) - which are always available in any cafe and commonly at most homes. Some other slang (lazy) terms/words for ketchup you may hear in the UK might be; "pass the 'tommy'... thanks" or "pass the 'tom'... please" - and even more confusing the 'Cockney Rhyming' slang (used especially here in London), for it is; "pass us the 'dead horse'... cheers, mate" OR MORE likely, just, "pass us the 'horse'... please", while pointing at either the red or brown sauce bottle. ('Dead Horse = Tomato Sauce). So, after all that, just remember we love a bit of 'tom' on a chip butty here in the UK... LOL 👍
EDIT: I have ONLY just realised that this comments section is over a year old and others have already mentioned ketchup etc. So I hope some of what I have written 'may' be new to you? Sorry... 🤔😐
