The targets are scored as follows. #1=5 point, #2= 5 point, #3=5 point, #4=5 point, #5=5 point, #6=10 point, #7=15 point, #8=25 points total of 75 points if cleared. Just to update Bryces comment at the beginning of the video. The match is now maxed out at 60 shooters per month. Morning match of 30 shooters, Afternoon match of 30 shooters. Thats the max we can run in one day. Scores are compiled together as if it were one match.
.22 caliber is a great and often underestimated round. Squirrels at 100 + yards, quiet, low price, and the one rifle that sees more target practice than probably any other.. .17 hmr is a very nice accurate rim fire round as well.

that is freaking awesome!! your have so many young men or they're m the skiing such an awesome job. can we talk about setting something like this up in San Antonio, TX?
My Father who is now 95 years old is NOT a great shot now! BUT, in his 20's an 30's he was well known for his sharp eye and steady aim! His trick shot was to put two wooden match sticks on two fence posts 25 ft apart shooting just the tips standing 25 ft away lighting both matches with a Remington single shot 22 LR bolt action rifle! We were farmers and men from our area brought there guns to be sighted in knowing that if they missed, it was their fault. Cool competition and those targets are great! I was a good shot but only with a good scope on the gun. My Father never used a scope saying he knows where the bullet will go.
I believe they do. Go to NRL22.org and look at the clubs by state. NRL22 is very similar to this. If there isn’t a local match you can start your own thru NRL22. They provide the monthly course of fire and target kits.
This looks like great fun. The only thing I don't understand is why there is so much loud talking and background noise. Is that how it normally is? Yes, good shooters shouldn't have to worry about noise but it just seems to take away that pro feeling. Anyway it's a great video and a great competition. Good luck and be safe. God bless.
Isn't it frustrating not having consistent ammunition? I used to shoot precision air rifle long before regulators and the inconsistencies drove me nuts!!
Awesome video, Was just wondering what the targets are made of/ how you made them? I have the frame build just need the targets. They seem really thick and heavy for a .22 to it spin so well around the bar just just looking to see how you made them
I'd love to get something like this going in my area, any advice as to how to do that? and if you could give some specs on the target used in this video. Thank you,
After watching all your videos I picked up a Kidd Supergrade that I'll use my Dead Air Mask on. I also put a Sightron SV and bought a five thousand rounds of Lapua Center X..... now my question, what yardage are you zeroing in at?
Would it be okay to bring a 22 cal air rifle to compete or would the air rifle have to much of a advantage over a 22 rimfire ? I would like for the 22 lr shooters to see how much more accurate the new pcp air rifles are .
I'd like to make my own target like that. I saw the info about the diameter of the plates, what thickness would I want to use? And am I correct in thinking the target side stands and center rod are rebar with steel targets attached to PVC to let them swing around?
I find that the best ammunition for my rifle is PBR and a nice sunny day. First the most part it swallows anything. Even chips. And if it misses I just write it off as the good company I have on the range. Fun fun
they also have a Kyl know your limits at the prs i think it might have been at sin city not sure but there was a time limit. same concept except if you missed you went to 0 but if you still had time you could go back through them and try to get your points back
Yeah, we've run it a variety of different ways included that one. The most popular and most common is a true KYL where if you miss...you're toast! lol. It's fun. Thanks for watching. I need to come down to Vegas and shoot some of the Sin City Matches.
Great Match!. I Live right Down The Road From This Very Range! & I've Always wondered, IS it Open To Gen.public, Never Found Who To Contact? even asked My City Leo's & No Idea?... IF Can/Will Answer That'd Be Great!.. & Thanks Again Nice Video!.
Bill Burns Yes it's open to the public but both the morning and afternoon matches typically fill up in advance. You'll want to join the facebook group "22 LR Marksman Challenge" to learn more and sign up. Typically you'll need to pay in advance to Rodney Downs to participate. The matches are the 3rd saturday of every month rain or shine.
+Brandon Shepherd Most are shooting Lapua Center X but even then you need to try different lots and find what works best in your rifle. You can actually send your rifle to Lapua in Arizona and they will test 15-20 lots of ammo for you, find the one that shoots the best thru their optical sensors at 50 and 100 yards and then let you buy a case (5000 rounds) of that lot. If you can swing spending $1200 on 22 ammo this can be awesome. Other guys on more of a budget are shooting Wolf Match Target or Match Extra. Other are shooting SK standard plus and Rifle match. Just depends on budget and what your rifle likes.
OK, I painted my dongles fluorescent pink....age 74 eyes. Have you found any way to reduce the ricochet sound? It’s like the old Hollywood sound of the bad guys’ bullets hitting the rock next to Hoppalong Cassidy. My neighbors complained. My setup is against a 15’ high, forested embankment, the line of sight passes 30’ behind his house, if one got up there through the trees. No risk, but I understand his anxiety. Gosh, this is a great country.
This is pretty neat. I should make myself one of these targets to complement my dueling trees. You should think about giving better prizes. They do a .22 competition match here once a year, and the top shooters in all three categories win a 10/22. Nice to see some 10/22s representing. You'd think by reading the Rimfire forums that CZ is the only .22 rifle on the market anymore. Stuck-up snobs mostly. Speaking of which, I see an Anschutz there. Isn't that like a $10,000 .22 rifle?
OK. I think I am hooked. Would love to shoot long range 22 match. So what 22 LR rifle would you recommend in $500 to $1200 range? From I have read the Sightron III 10 x 50 is preferred scope in the $800 to $1200 range.
For most guys a CZ455 Tacticool or Precision Trainer are great. If you have the money you could start out with an Anshutz 64R. Yes the Sightron 10-50s are awesome.
My question is, are misfires counted as misses? It looked like some rounds didn't go off, light primer strikes or bad ammo...who knows. Looks like tons of fun though!
If you're rifle doesn't go off then it is not counted but there is a time limit. If you don't mean to shoot and you do inadvertently then that would count and you would get a zero unless you hit the correct target. Even if you shoot the wrong target you get a zero. It's brutal.
Is the match just from one position (prone), or multiple positions? If one position, who picks for that match? Any match's in the Northwest / Oregon area?
+Natezoinks There is a mix of positions determined by the match director who creates the course of fire each month. The matches are currently only held in Utah but Rodney is franchising it. If you're interested in that you can email me and i can connect you with him. longrangeshootersofutah at gmail.com
This is just one stage of many. If there is a tie across 8-10 stages, one stage is preset as the tie breaker, then a second so we look at who did better on the tie breaker stage.
Master Warning The distance depends on the course of fire that given month. Last month we had the small KYL at 25 yards and a large KYL at 100 that we have to do back and forth on, shooting prone with a bipod. Other months it's 25 -40 yards but you're shooting from a sling either prone, sitting, kneeling etc. Other months it's at 50 and we're shooting prone from a bipod. It varies. Ammo used also varies by the shooter. We've found that each rifle has it own quirks and favorite ammo but 99.99% of us are shooting match grade subsonic ammo that the average person has never heard of. Most popular from lowest cost to highest would be Wolf Match, Wolf Match Extra, SK Standard, SK Standard Plus, Lapua Center X, Lapua Midas + and others. I personally started with wolf and have moved to Lapua Center X. We have a gentlemen in the group that buys it all by the case and sells to the rest of us so we're usually pretty well supplied. Center X runs $110-125 per brick of 500 rounds.
jabin48 99% of shooters are shooting prone. There is an elderly gentlemen that shoots from a bench. Benches take up too much space on the line and there are not enough for all the shooters. This match is full every month both the AM and PM match in total 60 shooters each month and usually some on standby.
+Cowboy Country Depends on whether you want Mils or MOA. Then you can do a 34mm SV or a 30mm S3. Then you have illuminated and none. Then it's just picking reticles. They have a new Christmas Tree Reticle that I'd like to try personally. I have both the S3 and SV 10-50. The SV is much more expensive but the larger tube lets in more light so it's not as dark when you zoom in to 40x and above. It also has locking turrets and fast/slow knobs on the parallax. Both are excellent optics for the money.
I have numerous 22's, very fond of the round as it's fun and economical, what's not to like? At this point, I have 10-22 takedown but want to get more accuracy. For those of you that shoot this kind of stuff, would a 10-22 target model with heavy barrel work? Or should I get a bolt action, notice lots of people using cz's. As for optics, what are most people using for this type of shooting, fixed or variable? Maybe a 10x or a 16x be a good fixed? I know variable would cost lot more, but somewhere along the lines of 3-15? I'd like to keep firearm at under $500 and optic same? Thanks.
At that budget you'd have to go with a bolt action like a CZ to get the best accuracy. There are many including myself that shoot 10/22 variants. Mine is a Kidd Supergrade that ran me $1800. I would recommend a CZ455 Tacticool. Their factory barrels are great and you can always upgrade to a lilja if you want, that's what I did until I got the supergrade. Optics wise for that pricepoint I would recommend the SWFA 3-15. It's front focal plain which is great and focuses down to 6 meters. The only downside is the lack of high magnification. On both my rifles I run Sightron 10-50x one is an S3 $799-1000 and the other is an SV $2K. I hope that helps.
Sure does, sorry I didn't reply till now. Been out of the loop for awhile dealing with hospital stuff. Where I shop at, the cz 455 or 452 is available. Don't have tacticool? Would savage mark II TR or BV also be good options? I've definitely decided on a bolt action as already have semi-autos and like to have variety anyhow :). Scopes.....wow do they ever get expensive :) You gave me some good ideas though, thanks. Are the pride fowler evo 3-12 any good? Nikon makes one that has AO and is called the target efr looks interesting. I'm only asking cause my scope budget may be reduced to the 250 and below range. Or maybe I'll just have to save up for a while longer. I believe in quality, have Eotech and magnifier for my AR and I know I'll never need more....was worth the price in other words. I just get impatient. Haha Appreciate your help and enjoy your vids. Keep up good work.
Ombre, join our group on Facebook - long range shooters of utah and post a comment for Rodney Downs. He runs these matches and builds these targets to sell. I know he's planning to make a few more soon to sell. They are a blast. You can also join his group "22 LR Marksman Challenge" on Facebook and youtube.
The very last shooter in this video made the 5th target move even though he didn't pull the trigger . If you watch the video very carefully you can see it move and twitch when you hear the shot but it did move from the bullet hitting it . Who ever call it a miss was wrong . To bad they didn't use the video to replay it to the blind judge .
I wanna try that Air Gun out, but they don't sell these kinds of air guns here in the Philippines, here they don't even sell Picatinny rails! you need to weld it just to put a scope
do shooters have time to zero the scopes for that distance and setup? or are they using the first target to adjust for the rest? Coz if it's the latter, then it's pretty amazing.
Clips from the infamous "Know Your Limits" stage of the July 2014 22 LR Marksman Challenge. This time the KYL was set at 30 yards with 8 swinging steel targets. The first target being 2" in diameter on down to 1/4" which is the same size are the 22 cal bullet we're shooting.
It's written in the description - 30 yards. Generally we shoot it at 25 yard if we want it to be easy or if we're shooting unsupported and 50 yards if we're shooting prone and want it to be a bit more challenging.
is it bad that I quit chewing my carrot between each shot as if that was going to help the shooter? lol I noticed it at the end of the video.
I used to make fun of my brother and dad for whispering while we watched hunting shows.
Why the hell are you chewing a carrot? I know it is Easter, but a carrot?
If you were shooting it would be helpful to quit the carrot crunch just before trigger squeeze so in my mind your just practicing your target zen! Lol
No more help than me holding my breath. I don't know if they can tell or not lol

What ammo are they useing

Haha
Appreciate your help and enjoy your vids. Keep up good work.
Outstanding!
I’m so lucky to buy the last CZ 452 Ultra lux after that they discontinued
Good shooting mr Curtis
Great stuff, that is fun; do you know where I could purchase that kind of target with the 8 attachments?
Ombre, join our group on Facebook - long range shooters of utah and post a comment for Rodney Downs. He runs these matches and builds these targets to sell. I know he's planning to make a few more soon to sell. They are a blast. You can also join his group "22 LR Marksman Challenge" on Facebook and youtube.
Long Range Shooters of Utah RODNEY THE TARGETS YOU MAKE ABSOLUTELY GREAT LIKE TO HAVE A PRICE ON THOSE 8 TARGETS
Does everyone use optics? Are there extra points for using iron sights?
The very last shooter in this video made the 5th target move even though he didn't pull the trigger . If you watch the video very carefully you can see it move and twitch when you hear the shot but it did move from the bullet hitting it . Who ever call it a miss was wrong . To bad they didn't use the video to replay it to the blind judge .
There was at least one other one that was called a miss when the target moved as well.
2:28 Butterfly, "WHEW THAT WAS CLOSE!"
Thanks for adding info re firearm used.
I want that target.
I wanna try that Air Gun out, but they don't sell these kinds of air guns here in the Philippines, here they don't even sell Picatinny rails! you need to weld it just to put a scope
Wow i have not seen these be for. I would love to have come and played be for i moved
do shooters have time to zero the scopes for that distance and setup? or are they using the first target to adjust for the rest? Coz if it's the latter, then it's pretty amazing.
You zero before the match but you dont' get to shoot the this target at the same distance it will be set at during the match.
okay, cheers!
This is awesome
What's the distance to the targets?
100 yards u can hear them say it in the video
Clips from the infamous "Know Your Limits" stage of the July 2014 22 LR Marksman Challenge. This time the KYL was set at 30 yards with 8 swinging steel targets. The first target being 2" in diameter on down to 1/4" which is the same size are the 22 cal bullet we're shooting.
What’s the distance?
It's written in the description - 30 yards. Generally we shoot it at 25 yard if we want it to be easy or if we're shooting unsupported and 50 yards if we're shooting prone and want it to be a bit more challenging.
Damn felt bad for the last shooter. Gotta be very cautious with those couple ounce triggers
Always check sear engagement.
What a great game
