What is this? A new video up so soon? Yup! We are trying to increase our video release rate. This one was made for every person that commented about seeing slow motion so.........here ya go. A long video just full of booms. Remember, we do have a ton of videos up. For some reason, people act like we only have a few loaded. Remember! The person with the 1000th comment will get a prize. I'm thinking: a fragmentation shard engraved with your name on it.
Here's a thought for something else. In the 1800s and early 1900s in the Pacific Northwest (among other places) log mills used black powder wedges to split logs that were too big to fit in the mill. It would be interesting to see one in action. P.S keep up the great work.👍
I’m a professional fireworks guy and I’ve always wondered how a 3” titanium salute shells explosive force matches up to the explosive force of your standard hand grenade.
Have you ever considered using ”Pressure Release Devices” to measure the atmospheric changes caused by your explosion? It might provide some rather interesting data with regards to how much over pressure your test generate ????
Let's back up. A U.S. Mk2 is loaded with 350gr of E-C blank powder. German grenades in world war two were of offensive type. Meaning no onboard fragmentation. Frag devices were made to be added.
I would love to see the effectiveness of the late WW2 Japanese ceramic grenades. I have a couple of bodies of them and cannot imagine them damaging anything but unprotected flesh. In the post-WW2 era the USN used them to test welds on subsurface ship hulls.
I have a ton of those! (Shell only) My Navy builder uncle was stationed in Okinawa in the 80s and ended up in a hotel attic for a repair, found an entire crate of them and brought them back. They're cool. Always wondered about the lethality myself. The walls are quite thick and they're rather sturdy, dropped one and it was fine. I bet they could do a number. Probably not always though, I have one with some defects
As a kid I put a firecracker in a big wine bottle and ran 'round the corner. Because of the curvature a relatively large triangular piece followed me. It went through a pair of jeans and my undies and far enough into my butt that I had to pull it out. So without having solid evidence I'd still say that a ceramic shell could be pretty dangerous if it was constructed like a pineapple (or similar) provided the charge isn't so overpowered it just turns the ceramic to dust.
@@andersjjensen And thus my curiosity about ceramic grenades. I am interested in learning about their effectiveness against different types of targets like ballistic gel, car doors/windows, body armor, etc. The originals had enough explosive charge to bust poor welds on submerged hulls of ships, so there is some evidence of their power. I can't help but point out the differences between a glass wine bottle and a ceramic grenade, but glass encased explosives have proven their lethality for centuries.
@@FreeAmericaChannel Aye, but ceramics can be both harder and denser than glass, so in like for like conditions ceramics look like a hit (no pun intended). Obviously if the ceramic is like adobe earthenware it's going to do fuck all, but if it's like the high density shit they used to encase CPUs in I'd rather get hit by glass... That shit was tough as nails (I tried to drill a hole in the corner of a CPU once. No dice and a molten HSS drill!).
When I was in munitions school in the Air Force we saw slow motion explosions of 500 and 2000 pound bombs, real slow...cool to watch the iron case on a bomb swell to twice it's size before rupturing.
When I got my Chronos 1.4 and started filming exploding targets at 5000, 10,000 fps and up is when I realized just how fast an explosion happens. It's mind boggling! I'm glad to see you guys got a Chronos too.
I absolutely love the high-speed camera playback. Glad you guys were able to purchase it. I get excited whenever I see you guys in my feed. Keep it up guys.
A good friend of mine is an RCMP Staff Sergeant and I make sure to send him all of your videos so Hamas doesn't learn to make highly enriched uranium from them. He thinks you guys are pretty awesome.
I dont get how you think hamas would be detered by your video sending? Are you one of those guys who thinks his actions are more important than they really are? Sounds like it.
This is my new favorite channel. It's like DemolitionRanch but with actual demolition. Congrats on the new camera! A Rubbermaid tub filled with gasoline and explosives would make a cool fireball to film...
I like how you guys keep up with the explosive theme behind the scenes; clearing out annoying bushes and digging holes with bombs instead of... removing them by hand. Absolutely love it. Stay safe during these times.
Seems like every poor Tom, Dick, and Harry gets a good high speed camera these days. Pretty cool footage, I can't wait to see what you capture when you get familiar with it. I wouldn't mind lower resolution with higher shutter speeds though, that's where the money shots really hide. I'm calling the RCMP. Some guys in Texas are getting pretty rowdy!

The potato masher was an "offensive" grenade designed to kill/disable from concussion. The pineapple is a "defensive" grenade designed to kill/disable some from blast but mostly from shrapnel.
According to a book I read on the Army of the Potomac Artillery, not much. The gunpowder charge is a low explosive and only made around 6-12 pieces of the shell. Also not moving with lots of velocity. So effective radius not real big. Canister and grape shells (think big shotguns) worked the best, but in defensive role. For example, the confederate artillery bombardment before Picket’s Charge at Gettysburg did not do much to the Union troops. The latter artillery were major contributors to the failure of the attack.
Problem with that is, that the powers that be (throw in any acronym you choose) highly regulate flying explosive devices. Ordinance Lab would likely be charged with multiple felonies.
Just found you guys by random chance, I LOVE the way you are hitting back at the " Lefties " with your jokes. You earned a Subscribe, Can't wait to see more from you guys !
Very nice footage and I love the humor of you both. I love seeing explosions and hearing the technical stuff about it. People shouldnt whine about it, you make the cool explosions so I dont have to. Thx a lot, cant wait for the next vid :D!!!!
It would be interesting to see what the process would look like if you zoomed in close to the charge and used a really fast frame rate, even if at a lower resolution. I've heard that that camera can allow some significantly faster frame rates that might possibly reveal how the charges begin to split or fragment. Have fun!
Great stuff, happy you finally have decent slomo-camera. If I could wish for something? I would move the Chronos further out to have a bigger area of view that doesn't get "whited out" and shows more effect of the shockwave. Thanks as always!
This is great content. I haven't done explosives since the military. I would love to brush up on them. Safely of course and legally. But would you be able to make a donut charge or some breaching charges? Thanks for the content.
Great footage brothers!!! Stay safe!! And please keep them coming!! Your really making me with i would have followed my fathers career choice as a blaster for bethlehem steel!!
The original German stick grenade was for blast or concussion effect. They also had a metal sleeve that could be slipped over the head for fragmentation effect. I think I was notched on the inside. Like to see the pressure cooker have a layer of nails, nuts, ad bolts around the inside of he cooker, say 1-2"thick, and on another one, a similar layer outside. Set up plywood silhouette targets around I up to 25-50 yards away to demonstrate effectiveness.
That HS camera is cool. Love the video, and how it renders the overpresure effects. Occasionally I eel sorry for the RCMP, but then the alarm goes off, and I wake up.

Two things:1. German stick grenade had a cover design to slip over the head for more shrapnel. Plus, could add just more heads for bigger explosive. 2. Read a report years ago that an suicide bomber set of a vest in back of a bus. The driver was pushed against the window shield without breaking. The shockwave alone killed him. His insides were liquid from just the shockwave. Not always shrapnel gets you. Great work
Have you guys played with ANNM (AN nitromethane) ? I would imagine it would require a booster charge like ANFO does, and is a little messier... But it's supposed to be pretty impressive for a simple binary explosive.

The potato masher was an "offensive" grenade designed to kill/disable from concussion. The pineapple is a "defensive" grenade designed to kill/disable some from blast but mostly from shrapnel.
Also in WW2 the most common German grenade was the "egg" grenade. Guess what it was shaped like.
