  • I hooked the lakes monster fish but what is it? In this episode GP braves some chilly weather to try and net himself a decent Catfish, but he misses the first five on his super magic bait! Finally he gets attached to one and manages to keep it from burying in the reed beds...Success, but he then recalls his last trip for Catfish the previous year when he hooked up the lake monster but the camera finally died on him as it had been hit by saltwater on a boat fishing trip. Luckily he gets some footage with another angler helping him with some phone shots, so at least he has a record of the fish. It’s a real chunk and his biggest of that year. Finally he recalls how he had a huge Willow tree bough crash down in a previous winter storm which he then turns into firewood for the log burner, plus enjoys the leftover branches in a hand-warming winter bonfire...Enjoy..

    One of the very best things of all about your fishing is that you keep it real Graham. You use and adapt the gear you have rather than feel the need to purchase the “ latest matching” rods and reels, the£350 flashy pods etc. You know what matters to catch fish. If there was one person embodies the phrase if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, it’s probably you….except that you probably would try to fix it rather than throw it away too!!!!

    Curved shank helps hook the fish. If you look where the tension is being pulled from the hook eye - the curve helps set the hook better with less chance of the fish coming off! Another great vid!

      Yup, obviously not for every situation but certainly a hook I use the most in my carp fishing, rarely need to add any shrink tubing to aid the turn with these hooks, rig depending but they are great and turn fast to dig in

    It was with a tear in my eye that I watched you release that #50 catfish back into the pond. In Texas where I lived for 12 years, to go catfishing with a friend required two things; a case of beer and the presumption of the fish fry that would certainly follow the days fishing. That #50 would require several Tele calls for additional friends (with beer), and bring some wood with which the fish would fry. And an appetite. My friend passed away a few months back now, and with him went the long summer days of catfish, and beer, more catfish, and more beer. It was a cycle really. I'm going to miss that mate. There was only one like him. We'll meet again I'm sure.

    • @TAFishing

      Sorry to hear of your loss ,but it sounds like the two of you had it about right...eating,followed by beer !!..nothing wrong with that...I don't believe I have eaten Catfish when in the States,but caught Channels and do they have one called a Blue Catfish ??...Also had smaller versions down the Florida Keys,but nasty criitturs with Dorsal and Pectoral barbs on the outside edge of the fins. I used them for big Lemon sharks off Nine Mile Bank in the middle Keys.

      How come you don’t catch and release in the usa so you can catch again.

    • @backpages1
      @backpages1 Рік тому +1

      @@jackscott5144 Thanks for your comment! In the US, there are several different kinds of fish we throw back for some future 'catch'. Black Bass is one of the most widely enjoyed catching, and 99 out of 100 people will release it. There are several other lines of fish, Crappie, white bass, catfish, just to name the most popular, are desirable for their taste and are frequently kept. The catfish is one of the lines that grow like weeds here, and it is considered to be a favor to get the big ones out of the lake so the smaller ones can grow. Another like the catfish, called a Buffalo, that is another 'weed' of the lake, although it is too boney for the average fisherman and frequently given to those that are catching fish so their family has something to eat. They put up a good fight though! Crappie are one of the best fish for a 'fish fry', there are so many of them and they put up a good fight as well, but are best used for food.
      The overall objectives are (1) to feed your family and (2), conservation of our lakes and rivers. We clear out the 'weeds' to make room for the other species for the fun of fishing and to teach our children conservation.

      Don't throw your tackle away,you might regret it later. Its just the way I fish. The most important part is the bit that goes on in the water,not up on the bank. The fish don't care whether you have expensive gear or not ,they never see it until its too late and they are on the bank !.

I caught a 32.14 common on 7 pound bs mono right through, coupled to a 13 ' Mitchell Blue Match ( fibreglass ) and a 1971 Michell 300. The original tungsten roller bail arm, engraved side plate version.
      Why the tackle?
      End of October finicky feeding fish. The 13 foot rod almost used as a pole. To gently 'place' my bait where I wanted it.
      Bread paste and maple syrup , pure aniseed oil. To add sweetness and smell.

    Darker wood in the inside is heartwood and drier. The lighter wood on the outside is sapwood that feeds the tree. What the dark rings are I wouldn't know, but count the rings in the sapwood and try dating it back. Was it the super warm, dry summers of 1975 and 1976?

    Love folks who offer their unwanted bait to others when they are packing up. I used to local a private fishery up in Essex that had a big problem with people just dumping all their unwanted bait and loose feed into the water at the end of their sessions rather than offering it to others till the owners made it a bannable offence. Sorted the place out real quick. Some people dont seem to understand how much something like that ruins it for everyone.
    Very kind of that guy to give you the free bait.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  2 роки тому +1

      I find it happens a lot with beach fishermen. They often give each other leftover baits,especially Ragworm/Lugworm. I guess because they might not have another session planned and the worms won't keep too long in a fridge,maybe 5 days or so. Same goes for maggots .If someone gives me some bait even if I don't use it all on the day it can be frozen down and used for feed in the next session.

    I believe the trees and a lot of plants are suffering from a lack of nutrients in the soil and compacting of the earth. soil erosion is a big problem that's getting worse and worse. there are some who believe at current rates we may only have 60 harvests of top soil left and the world grows 90% of our food in topsoil. Maybe that's not exactly what's going on with the trees but I think it's probably linked. bit of a downer ey. gonna look at that lump of a cat again, cheer me self up Graham. Trust you Mike, the missus and your daughter who's name I forget are all well and in good health. thanks as always for some grand fishing telly mate.

      All good here..Just too many jobs blocking the fishing sessions though. 60 harvests before we all expire ?? Wow,that's 60 years then..I would think most of the topsoil is fertiliser and various additives anyway,the rest is washed into our rivers to ruin them ,along with the odd few thousand pump outs of sewage....I wonder how deep "topsoil" is measured ? A few feet ? Or yards ?...Maybe they will have to plough super deep to bring nutrients to the surface and root growing areas. That will make a good theory time.

      No,I was doing some work at one of the properties...re-cementing a window frame in an office unit and ensuring it will last a few more years and give me more time on the water...Its not all fishing I'm afraid. I need to get the joblist cleared first which is why I mostly only fish afternoons/evenings...Well spotted though...I'm going to start wearing dark glasses and a Panama hat !!

    There was a guy here in Ky that had some paylakes, really nice lakes at that, this was out in Southern Ky, I won’t name the town or whatever, but some time back, probably 25-30 years ago, anyhow in was in the process of digging out one of the lakes and making it bigger, paylakes here are nothing more than glorified farm ponds really. Anyways he had started to dig out this one lake but he had plans on stocking it with Wels catfish but unfortunately before he could get his dream halfway finished, he passed away. What a bummer! A big bummer! He was a good man, kept a really clean business there, but his old property sat vacated for close to twenty years and then I heard another fella bought the place, I have not been down there since this guy opened it back up, would love to go see what he did with the place and do some fishing. That original owner had a really good stocking of big Blue cats and flatheads, there was 3 lakes on this property, two way in the back of the property which were the two biggest lakes and there was a smaller lake out front by the bait house. I have a friend that caught a 75lb Blue from one of the back lakes, I caught several flatheads from one of those back lakes but my biggest was 27 lbs and the other 21 lb, both caught on live bait fish, small goldfish and bluegill ( sunfish)!

      Sounds like a nice place to fish ,and some good sized fish in there. I never knew the Blue Catfish grew to 75lbs(or larger ?...Good luck with the fishing there.

      @@TAFishing - yeah buddy, no doubt! Yes sir, the world record Blue was 140 something lbs and caught out of a reservoir on the Carolina/Alabama line, I think? I know it was from over that way somewhere.?!?! And that lake has produced several big blue cats, but there are other places around the states that can produce a giant blue. I’m just waiting to hear that someone has caught a huge Flathead, something over a 100 lbs, they could get as big as a blue cat, it’s just the blues are pretty much always on the move and are eating machines, a big Flathead could stay in one area and catch one big meal and that will last him for quite a while. Anyhow, yeah it’s on my bucket list to go to, probably Spain? Is that where that river is that grows Wels catfish to enormous sizes? I thought there was a river in France that has huge Wels too? But thank you Graeme for the response my friend, I do appreciate it! Take care and tight lines to ya! Cheers 🍻

    I'm surprised that the pay lakes don't tag their fish just for the sake of tracking their growth etc. This would also lend itself to people being able to say they caught "The Colonel", "Golden Bill", Linear Tim" etcetera, last year he was X pounds and Y ounces but this year he was Y pounds and Z ounces".
    The axe you were using is what my grandfather would have called a "ladies axe". It's due to the 'kicked' handle and lightweight head and is meant for use around the yard. His tree felling axe was an 11 pound broadhead with a straight shaft, 5 foot handle, kept sharp enough to literally shave with. He spent most of his time before and after WW2 as a "timber-getter" and they only used axes and cross-cut hand saws. He never used a chainsaw until he was in his 60s.

      Well,I meant specimen fish,in relation to the size a species might grow. People can often end up disappointed when they start only targeting record sized fish. I just try to keep things in perspective ,as most fishermen are happy catching ANY fish...
