Storygraph literally gave life back to my reading culture and played a big role in getting me out a four year reading slump...in addition to discovering Jack of course ☺️
There's nothing more satisfying than clicking 'mark as finished' or seeing that you are certain percentage through your goal and god bless, if you it tells you that are actually ahead by a number of books T-T
Do you have that one book that always gets you hooked back on reading? Where you can have a few months (or years) without picking up a book or just starting and forgetting about them, but this is a book that's absolutely addictive. Total page turner and turns you into an obsessed reader? That's what I always use to get me back into the habit of reading. (For the last 5 yrs mine has been The Martian)
So sweet you read "Love in the Big City" in such a sublime environment but also I loved reading this novel - even though I just read it in wintry rainy London next to a creaky radiator. 😅❤
Claire Keegan is a brilliant author and I enjoy her writing style very much... So glad you love her too! By the way, the man of the moment Cillian Murphy is adapting one of her novels for the screen... that's his next project. Highly anticipated!
@@bookofdust “Small Things Like These”. It does have Emily Watson in it who is English so probably English. Bigger budget by the looks of it too than the other film. They won’t want to do it in Irish for the US market. His Dad apparently taught Irish and he is from the West of Ireland so he probably does speak it.
jack, ur prob not gonna see this but i just want to say thank you so much for being such an inspiration to not just me and my reading journey, but all of the people who watch your videos! great video! 👏
The bookshelves background is so great so at least your hard work has paid off in that regard 😂 My reading goal for the whole year was 12 books to read as I didn't want to overshot after coming back to reading but... Well. Yeah Ive already finished my goal well before the midyear hit 😅
Same here! I wanted to get back into reading so I set my goal as one book per month and I’m already passed that. Feels good to finally be crossing books off my list but not feel burdened.
I feel like often it works better to set a low goal, because it's easier to achieve and then when you surpass it it's kind of motivating and actually makes you want to read much more! Last year I set my goal to 25, reached it in the first four months of the year I believe, then set it to 50, and even ended up surpassing that!
Jack's reading goal is astounding to me lmfao. He has finished 140 books in 7 months which means 20 books a month while 20 books is my goal for the whole year! I know he is a book content creator but despite that, reading 20 books a month sounds insane to me.
young mungo was an absolute standout book for me this year (and I've read some absolute bangers), and I've just started demon copperhead, these two really give off similar vibes in the best way possible
I laugh when you show your StoryGraph stats. They show why I follow you, but also why I don’t read all of your recommendations. My first two categories are also emotional and reflective, in that order, and are almost half my graph. But then I read lighthearted, adventurous, and mysterious. Dark and challenging are in the middle somewhere. I’m 83 books into my 130 book goal. Thank you for your channels, your recommendations, and the recommendation of StoryGraph. I really enjoy knowing more about what I’m reading.
I read The Great Believers a few months ago! It immediately became an all-time favorite and just thinking about it now makes me emotional, it's such a special book. I hope you enjoy it!
I think it’d be super fun if you did a video where you rate your own reading positions. Just compile a bunch of different places you like to read or positions you sit in and rate them 😊👍🏼
The Great Believers has genuinely become one of my favourite books since reading it a few months ago. It goes so much deeper than just looking at the main couple and the way Yale's life unfolds is told so beautifully considering the subject matter. It's long and a little arduous but it's so rewarding in the end.
I read Claire Keegan’s Small Things Like These because of you and I absolutely loved it! I was so happy to hear it will be a movie! I can’t wait to read more by her
speaking of sequels, you NEED to read the elena ferrante's neapolitan novels!! it's a quartet and the books are 400+ pages each (which we know you hate a long book), but the writing is SO so good! it's all about relationships, the complexity of friendships, desire, education, class systems in 20th century italy, EVERYTHING!! and it's literary most of all! no fantasy or YA elements!! if you liked watching the lost daughter, she wrote the novel it's based off!!
I'm so excited for you to finish The Great Believers I sobbed through the last 10 chapters but it's my favorite book I've read so far this year I think you'll love it!
As a Canadian where a paperback costs around 25 each, the fact you have more than 1000 in that room has my brain in that starstruck feeling of "there are more then 25 thousand dollars in books in that room!!" lol If you can't tell, I am broke, so buying a physical book for me has to be one I REALLY want. I found when I was reading physical books I barely read bc of money. Now that I have a kindle I read so much more and I am really excited about that bc while I had to invest some 160 dollars initially, I have more than saved that much on books through prime reading, free or next to free "sales" and through kindle unlimited! I've also got a kobo now so I can get the digital books from the library without having to worry about bringing books back, another already paid for investment when it comes to books read vs price of a paper copy. I do envy the full library but I do have several hundred books I've collected over the years, it just isn't an affordable hobby to only buy them. I wish I lived in a larger town so I could find high quality used book stores. We only have one book store in town and while it is ALL used books I find it anxiety inducing to have NO organization in it. I am not asking for the actual library style organization but something basic like "classics, thrillers, romance" type of thing would be nice!
I think this many paperbacks is pointless, read them a couple of times then either sell them or pass them on. Only keep any which particularly resonate. In the UK there is no tax on books which might make a cost difference versus some other countries? I just need an app on any device for Library ebooks. Also remember he can business expense his purchases?
Hi I use Z library to download books and then email them to my kindle. And I buy used books and make great use of my local library! Reading doesn't have to be expensive x
He only gets used books which cuts the price significantly from the full price. I kind of agree about not having so many physical books, but on the other hand I want a full on library in my dream house one day 🤩
i’ve been in such a slump this year (blame my new hyperfixation on dnd not allowing me to do anything else) but this week i watched a couple of your videos and got back into it! currently reading great circle and rereading the shelf by helly acton 😊
Was surprised to see you bring out Jerusalem because I studied that in my English a level coursework but I agree with what you said. You may be pleased to know there is a play you can watch but it's not on stage now - just a past recording but it's got Mackenzie Crook in it so worth a watch ;)
OMG just finished The Great Believers this morning...in tears! It was a slow burner for me but so glad I stuck with it, absolutely loved it! Also now read Small things like these and Foster after you were raving about her and love her! Irish authors for the win! Love your videos ❤
Totally with you on Claire keegan. Foster just blew me away. She’s definitely a pick up immediately author for me now. Also agree with you about Demon. Unforgettable character, the way she manages to transition him from being about 8 into being a teenager and growing up, keeping him the same person but obviously maturing at the same time. Absolutely genius characterisation, the skill that something like that takes just puts Barbara Kingsolver on a different level for me.
Loved this video Jack and now my tbr is growing even longer after hearing about all the great books you have read. I’m so surprised and disappointed that you didn’t mention “A Little Life” as one of the books that made you cry. It was certainly my favourite book that I have read this year.
The same thing happened with me and The Great Believers! I got a few pages in and then just never picked it back up, it's been on my shelf forever now!
The fact that you're wearing a sweater and that we are in august, is unbelievable to me, bro it's literally burning outside. Btw, cool video, it permites me to have book recommendation at the speed of light, thanks !
That library is making me properly jealous!!! Best books I've read so far this year have all been non-fiction- Broadmoor: My Journey Into Hell by Charles Bronson, The Devil Makes Work by James Baldwin, and I'm currently racing through the engrossing nightmare of Killer In The Kremlin by John Sweeney.
idk if it's really your thing but if you wanna keep up with french reading a bit, can i just suggest Fred Vargas' crime novels ? It's so fun and crime-y but written in such a poetic and pretty way, with interesting characters🥰🥰🥰
I found my copy of alone woth you in the ether yesterday and i had bought it when i went to Chicago in February so i think hearing you rave above it means I'm gonna read it before summer ends. 🎉
Thank you for making wonderfully heartfelt booktube content and take care Jack! Idk maybe it's the skeptic in me but I heard a lot of morbid references from you in this video 🥺 (more than usual)
A few literary sequels, series.: Larry McMurty - Lonesome Dove series (Lonesome Dove being the most well-known) Rachel Cusk - Outline Trilogy (Three books that more or less are a series) John Updike - The Rabbit series - starting with Rabbit, Run It's more of a fun read than a serious read, but at the same time a awesomely important read: The Godfather and The Scicilian (to me a duology) The others are ghost written and don't count. Hilary Martel and the Cromwell series, fascinating -- so good Obviously N.K. Jemisin The Broken Earth trilogy which are pure literary GOLD but that's an easy one. Just a couple of other literary sequel novels or series I think are quite fascinating.
I have been WAITING for you to finish The Great Believers bc I feel we have similar taste, and I just think you will love it! It is a book I still think about... months after reading. PUH leeeeaaase pick it back up!! 😊
ahh ive been reading another country because i read giovanni's room for alevel coursework and loved it, but it's been a bit of a slow read for me so far. the writing is amazing but its not clicking with me for some reason. but since its got the jack edwards seal of approval im defintely going to give it another go! great videos as always :)
so not only do you give me ✨gender envy✨, you also give me library envy :') i desperately hope for the day i will have a library and will be able to read 140 books in barely half a year 🥲 you're really living the life :D

is it better than goodreads?
@@ShellovesmakeYES!!!!!
@@Shellovesmake yes definitely. Goodreads doesn't give you any analytics I believe
I’m so happy to see the immaculate library situation we have here. 👏🏽
Jack, I NEED another video about everything Isaac reads in Heartstopper S2 !!!
SECOND THIS
Third this!!!
Fourth this
never gonna get tired of seeing your bookshelf in these videossssss
I haven’t read one book this year, and my 1,000+ TBR is SCREAMING
same omg same! i have a pile of half-read books on my shelf and I NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT 😭
omg. the books on my shelf stress me out sometimes
Maybe you just are not a reader sweety
That makes me feel better about almost exclusively reading comic books this year.

Wow, that’s just impressive! I’ve only read 10 books so far, with some of them being super tiny ones lol
