Shouldn't have dunked the accelerator-laced syringe into the oil can. Get two syringes!
I agree!
So do I!
I almost had a heart attack when I saw that.
Thanks for sharing, it's hard to find info on using this for furniture. How hard is the surface? Scratch resistant?
how water resistant is this finish?
Great video by the way.
I just dropped a new video, 1 year review of Rubio.
Its completely waterproof once its fully cured!
I am curious it’s been a year now, how is the finish on table top holding up?
What is the color oil that was used on your table?
Thanks for the great video! Super helpful as I'm about to buy a bunch of the RMC samples to try on a number of wood types.
If you don't want to inadvertently affect part B, don't stick your part A - covered syringe into it.
🥰
You can get the 350ml size (with the accelerator part b) for about $66. Another option is buying just the part b small size to have on hand and buying the sample bottle of whichever color in the 100ml size for around $22 -- which is generally enough to cover a table top, use the trowel method to get the most coverage imo.
I used this on a table some 5-6 years ago, and a single coat has protected the table insanely well the entire time, including a beating from kids and a central table that gets daily and holiday use with no protection. The finish was coming off the thing, then we there Rubio Monocoat on it, and it's been bulletproof. I LOVE this stuff. So does the guy who runs uptown flooring. Can't say enough good about it - Rubio Monocoat is legit. Nice video.
I've used it for floors, counter tops and guitars. It's fantastic.
I use Rubio almost daily. Being from Belgium, the stuff is even cheaper over here (Rubio is a Belgian brand). Think 85€ per can (roughly 100$ if I'm up to date on conversion rates). It's a great product. The hardest part is having enough space to let all the production cure.
Shouldn't the underside be coated with Rubio or something so there won't be warpage from humidity?
You should really wear some gloves. I get MAD crazy allergic reaction when it touches my skin. Red itchy bumps for like 3 weeks. First time i used it i didnt use gloves, i regretted it like crazy!
I have heard of other people having a similar reaction but I’ve been lucky so far, doesn’t seem to bother me.
@@SlabGuy Hi! Can you share which color was used? Thank you!
Its a bummer you do not answer any questions folks have... Was really wanting some info
Do you know if the exterior Monocoat works as good? I have a white pine live edge slab table i'm working on and Monocoat suggests using the exterior brand. Thoughts?
Very informative video about the application of Rubio Monocoat, just what I was looking for...THANKS !!!!
Awesome review of this product. I do like the "European" look, and how the wax/oil finishing products penetrate into the wood, unlike the polyurethanes & lacquers that sit on top. And yeah, if it's durable enough to hold-up on the floor, it's absolutely perfect for anything else. What's really nice too, it's easier to do any potential spot-treatment/repairs if necessary. Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.
It’s not just speed-it’s also no surprises or disappointments later.
Watch out for the self-ignition of your used rags/ towels and pads...
Cool video. Can you put water based poly on top of it to get a gloss?
Why not to mention color of the coat and wood species used … no idea
what happens if you spill something on the table and it stains through? have you tested with stuff? like what if somebody came over and forgot to wipe off a lemon spill or some type of cleaning solvent? would it eat through?
I can’t speak for his table top but I do know that if water or something else gets spilled on the floor and is left it will leave a stain. Also the floor is not able to be mopped like a normal floor. Even with wood floors you could at least use a damp mop with Murphys wood soap but not this floor finish.
Great video. Just about to start using this. How long until you can flip over the table and do the underside?
The oil will be dry to the touch fairly quickly. Just make sure not to touch it directly, when flipping it, with your hands or the oils from your fingers could leave a mark. Check out our Oil Plus 2C application video on our page!
To what grit did you sand? The brochure says 180, dont know if you went higher. Doing a table top myself
They make a maintenance oil if people ant a shine.
You need to leave the product for at least 15 minutes before wiping the excess. Read the instruction.
Thanks for the video. I’m doing a butcher block island top in walnut, 3” thick. Thinking of arm r sealing bottom and sides, then Rubio on top where it might touch food. Any thoughts on moisture exchange/Warping With two different finishes?
Super helpful, especially the part about the matte finish, and if that’s not what you’re looking for then this might not be right for you. I’m anxious to try it.
How did you prep the table? Did you use the raw wood cleaner by rubio?
I didn’t use the cleaner. Just sanded to final grit and cleaned with mineral spirits.
you couldn't have titled this better. Great, and to the point. Really liked seeing the whole process without a lot of editing and swoopy shots that make me wonder what else may have been going on or if I really did see it all. Going to be trying their smoke color on a white oak table soon, the sample pieces went great, and really looking forward to it. Would love to see an update, I know it's only been about a month since this was published, but how are your initial reactions to how it's holding up to daily life? I've heard the cure is critical, not to get any spills or water on it for at least a week. I plan on bringing the table top I'm doing into my house in a spare room so it can sit and cure a week or two before delivery.
How long does it take to coat one table with pure color using this festool hand machine?
What color were you using?
But if they recommend you send at no higher than 120 grit then how can you get a smooth finished table? 120 is very rough.
I wondered about that as well. My sander is variable speed and by turning it down, it does a better job. The intuitive thing is to have the highest speed possible but I think what happens is that when it’s running wide open, it skips over spots. By running at a lower speed, it’s allowing the paper to do its job.
Was thinking that same thing
Great vid - thx. Can you add a dye to Rubio monocoat?
Maybe you will consider building some chairs for it.
where did you get the Scotch Brite pad? our Festool dealers don:t have them
Amazon
How does this compare to osmo?
What kind of wood is this?
What color stain did you use?
What went flying at 4:43?
I have no clue, that’s very strange.
That’s what I’m worried about, the 120 grit... what grit did you finish at?
Have you tried it on Plywood yet? Like Baltic birch?
I've seen other UA-camrs like John Malecki finish at up to 180. I'm considering testing the difference on the underside of my live edge table when I make it shortly
do you have any experience you can share regarding durability of this finish with hot or cold items like a bowl of soup or cold soda etc? I am building a walnut slab table and trying to determine what finish will be the most durable. thanks for replying and thank you for a very nice instructional video
I am planning a follow up video, it’s been almost a year since I made the table. I have some good feedback to share.
Hey, loved the video! I just got into monocoat myself and I see youre using the rotex to buff the surface, do you have to use a new buffing pad for every piece? I would have thought the oil dries and leaves the pad unusable, am I right? Im trying to work out the price of each application and if Im adding a new puffing pad into the price that pushes that price right up. Appreciate your advice!
No. The product is dry when you come back to buff it the next day so you can reuse the pad. Plus it’s the buffing “action” that you’re after. You could even put a cloth over the pad then toss it.
What happens when you spill red wine, etc? I know the product was designed for hardwood flooring so it must seal pretty well, but standing up to red wine or the likes seems to good to be true.
I’ve found that if any spills are cleaned up in a timely fashion, they are totally fine. Example, wipe the table off after dinner, and you’ll be fine. If a bad stain does occur, it’s a very easy product to fix.
What grit did you sand to, before using Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C?
With Rubio you can’t sand as high in the grits, the oil won’t soak in. I generally stop 150-180. It looks good.
4:30 😞😞😞
Thanks for the video. Where did you buy the white scotch brite pad from ? I cant seem to find it anywhere.
Would you be able to leave a link ?
Thanks

There are green ones and white ones directly from festool. The white ones are definitely on the flimsier side.
Excellent video - thank you. What sand paper grits and types did you use?
Hi, what was the colour of Rubio that you used please? Lovely table !👍👌
The Rubio folks say the rule is “You can’t wipe off too much”.
What do you use to clean out the syringes, mineral spirits? Thanks.
Water.
Second Life Design oh really!?
Four questions: How temperature sensitive is the required time for an 80% cure? What can I recommend as a cleaning or dusting product to the people who commission Monocoated work? If there is a Monocoat color blend that approximates the yellowing effect of traditional varnish or lacquer, what is it called? Finally, if I buy a larger kit than needed for my first project, can Monocoat be tinted with Trans Tint? Thanks.
It looked like you used the same syringe first with the accelerator, then with the oil. Accelerators are usually catalysts, so I wonder if getting a small amount of catalyst into the can would cause it to cure over some amount of time? I'd use two syringes, or clean in between, just to be safe.
I did a small box that I was decorated further - used product left over from friend doing their deck - both turned out great. I couldn’t have afforded it for a small box. But if I had several lined up to do all at one time, would use again. It is expensive, don’t skimp on following directions to the tee, mixing and shaking the can as directed. People always complain and have problems - maybe they don’t get the contents throughly mixed or they mix and get too many air bubbles. Depends on the product. The directions from the brand website show them shaking and then stirring to get the pigment off the bottom of the can. If you don’t get that pigment throughly mixed in - again you aren’t getting what you are paying for. It’s like folks go from one extreme to the other. Just because it eventually dries doesn’t mean you aren’t screwed because you aren’t getting full benefit of the products if you don’t use it as designed. This is for any product you use. There are specific sanding, vac, and cleaning directions. They also say 10 minutes wait between putting it on and wiping it off. Probably depends on how much color you want to soak in. But if you don’t give it time to soak in, might not get full benefit. The only thing I didn’t understand is it says it has no water, no solvents, low VOC - so what is in it. It said odor was oily and it is. Low VOC are usually water based or some combo.
Important, whatever it is, it says the rags will self combust and need to be put in water before disposal.
In addition the website helps you decide which oil you want to use and what maintenance product you want to use. It talks about getting the second coat on before the first coat dries.
It also showed pouring the entire can in a bucket and putting the entire can of the accelerator in with the can. Didn’t see anything about a syringe. Maybe that’s for smaller areas like this gentleman was doing.
This can be used for outside and that’s where the accelerator comes in to its best advantage. Total cure anywhere is 7 days Vsrsus 21 days. Also 40-50 colors.
I suggest you read the website, check out the help, videos and call if you have questions. The manufacturer is your best source of help to begin with. Then you can go to the professionals to see how they use. As on all things stick with tips etc from those who have a lot experience like in this case finishing wood, and then with the specific products.
Please not those “never used it, never done this, but let’s take a wack at it”. You all know what I mean. I saw one the other day - and that’s exactly what the guy said - had never done a floor, table, nothing before, didn’t even like painting. Didn’t read one instruction off the can, said it should work like everything else. From someone who had never done any type of staining, nor painting. Said the products always try to rip you off. I was like maybe if you read and use the instructions it might work as you expect. He didn’t prep at all, wiped his hand across the wood and said - it should be clean enough, not much dust on my hands, they were white with dust. 😳 He made a bunch of off color jokes and used a lot of rough and I felt inappropriate language for the venue and subject. I guess that was more important than knowing what you are doing and got him the numbers to be able to monetize. Not sure he could read - one of those types. Beats me. Quite honestly, he talked weed more than anything, maybe he needed to step away from his plants for awhile to concentrate.
Looks real nice. Looking at using Rubio for a table. The table top is sanded with 180 grit. Once you apply Rubio how do you get the top smoother since you don’t sand between coats like you do with traditional varnish?
Till what gritt did u sand 2 ive seen videos they say 120... 150 ...220...
I would like to use this product on red oak to resurface my kitchen cabinets. Would this be a good choice for that project?
Hi Deann, we certainly would be. We recommend Oil Plus 2C for all interior applications. It is liquid and heat resistant! You can find more info on our website.
Rubio Monocoat USA I would like to try this on a restoration hardware reclaimed Russian oak dining table. Can this be applied color neutral? It is beautiful white oak with a great patina. A suggestions
Rubio Monocoat USA also can I apply a wax over it?
If I am finishing an 11'x4'x2.4" walnut slab, which size container should I buy?
Be careful ! I used this stuff on a beautiful table and it completely ruined it. Stick to normal furniture oil and you’ll be safe . Rubio is a nightmare to get right
Do you wipe the table with water/damp cloth to pop the fibers before the initial application?
After completing the Rubio process, could you have applied a flood coat to get the glossy sheen some people are asking about?
Hi, great video, thank you. i would like to make a table , could you please share the dimensions.
Could you please tell me if you know, would Rubio monocoat would work /bind to a surface that has be treated or burned using the shou sugi ban method,
Thank you
I work for someone who had her entire house (new wood floors) done with this finish. The floors looked great when they were first done but It’s been several years now (5) and in the places where the floor is covered by sofa or rugs, it still looks pretty good but the place is where it gets a lot of traffic the floors look horrible. You need to redo your floors every year I believe they said. When I say they said I’m talking about the people who came out to put the finish on Originally. I use a special cleanerMixed with water that I spray onto a microfiber dust mop type tool and I go across the floors after I have vacuum them thoroughly. She has several dogs the floors are now starting to show dog feet that are not coming up and the floors looking scratched and dried. I believe the floor should be redone but like he said there’s quite a cost for the stuff.
I don’t think I would want this stuff on the dining room table where you would be whipping it off after each meal.
how does it reacts to epoxy? can I use it over sanded epoxy surface and get high gloss? any recommendations?
What do you think about applying to kitchen cabinets??
Hi - what grit did you sand the table to? I am working on a maple live edge slab right now and have sanded to 120 then wiped with a damp cloth but I feel i could go higher. What do you recommend?
I generally don’t go over 150 grit for Rubio.
@@SlabGuy and u haven't had any problems . Guy in store said not to go over 120. I had already sanded to 220 so have to sand back .
Thanks for getting back to me Do you do anything after the Rubio has cured? I would like to try and get a smoother finish. Your video really helped me with my live edge tables finishing. TIA @@SlabGuy
Currently Rubio factory data sheets recommend sanding to 80 or 120 grit. I am planning on using Rubio Monocoat on a counter top. What do you think about a finer grit than 100? Thank you and that was a great video.
Do you normally put a finish on both sides of your tables? And if so, could you just use a sealer of some sort on the bottom side?
Expensive is right…ridiculous.
So with this being a single coat, your piece is completely smooth to the touch after one coat?
What species of wood is this and what color of Rubio did you use?
thanks for the video. how does it feel? is it silky? can you apply a wax over the finish to give it a more silky feel?
I would live to see this table from need as possible and to see how resistant it is
Great color on the table. What color did you use? I would like to use this on Hemlock would floors. Is there a top coat that I should use for high traffic areas?
How can do this .. can you explain me 🙂
Where did you get the white buffer pads?
They are from festool. Search “vlies” on amazon. They are also available in green, they are a bit more durable.
@@SlabGuy are vlies for fine sanding too. Do they have a grit or are you just buffing Rubio on with it ?
Have you ever vompared odies with the rubio?
Can you do a video on a Waterlox finish?
Make sure you get the underside done as well.
Which Color did you use? Walnut?
can I epoxy over this ?? plus cool vid
I wouldn’t epoxy over RubioMonocoat.
I have epoxied my cracks in mine then sanded the excess epoxy off the table and now applied Rubio it looks awmazing!!!
It is linseed based oil.
How does it work on end grain? or epoxy? I have a coffee table (24" x 48"") made from a maple burl. This is my first time on a larger scale project. I have already purchased the Rubio in a small container. Should I expect a darker transition? Will it require a 2nd coat?
I just did a butcher block countertop in Rubio Cotton white. The amazing thing is the end grain is exactly the same tone as the flat grain.. It came out an even tone all over. I did a 72x26" counter top, 1 coat on all sides. In total I used a 1/4 cup of finish ( 4 TBSP) plus 4 tsp hardner. That is all I needed. As for Epoxy, Blacktail studios uses Rubio almost exclusively on his Epoxy /Walnut slab tables..
How does it perform over epoxy repairs?
how did it do over the epoxy? I have black metalic swirls as a river down the middle, not flat black. will it ruin the river?
It’s fine over the epoxy. Maybe test it on the bottom side for possible discoloring but I didn’t notice any when I went over black epoxy.
I've been following you on insta for a while now and love the stuff you share. I'd love to see you make more videos for UA-cam.
That finish looks great, I really like that it doesn't have the overlap marks. Thanks for sharing the info.
A very good solution is to polish the surfaces with a clean pad, 15 minutes after application. Well done! I like it :)
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice table. Will this give the grain pop oil look on a walnut table? I like the "one day, and be done with it".
Looks like you have a couple spots you filled with epoxy? How did the Rubio work on those spots?
It applies fine, adhered well. I haven’t noticed any long term defects.
Interesting, what amount of hardener got into the oil can from the tip of the syringe?
It’s minimal at best. It’s not quite like an epoxy or something. It doesn’t make it harden immediately or anything.
It really was the video I was looking for.
Did you finish the underside of the top to prevent warping? If so, what did you use?
I finished the underside with the same finish as the top.
Good Info, thanks
Very good video
Привет от паркетчиков из России 🤘
well done video
Are you the voice of the bear in those tool review videos?
I wish.
If I was to want to do both sides of the board what would you recommend for cure time before flipping and completeing the second side?
Manufacturer recommends 36 hours--lots of users have had good results with 24 hours.
Do I need to sand Between coats and if so how strong of sandpaper
No sanding. One coat and your done.
Awesome work! How would you suggest adding to a live edge with knots? I am working on a set of mantels and want to use this product but i don't think a buffer wheel will work on my live edge. Thanks!
It can be applied by hand with a rag. That’s how I always handle the odd edges.
Could you point to other resources for those additives or washes that can be done to achieve a satin finish? Thanks!
There are a couple products, like a finishing soap from Rubio directly that should alter the sheen.
Little late to the party but...I'm making an office desk for my wife and she doesn't want shiny. This looks like the perfect product. The problem is that by the time I found out about Rubio and watched the video I've already put about a billion hours of sanding into the project and have it sanded to 320. (I know...overkill). Is it worth it to spend the money on this product now that I've sanded so much? It's a 2" black walnut slab with a live edge. Thanks!!
If it were me I would try some Odie’s oil, it’s another great option. It would make a great finish for the higher grit that you have sanded too. Very little shine too.
Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video. Perfect in terms of what I was looking for
