Tuomas is the main music and lyric composer. That includes all the classical orchestral pieces and choral pieces too. His ideas are then transcribed and arranged by Pip Williams for the orchestra and choir before it is recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. These recordings are also what Nightwish use for their live shows by employing backing tapes and click tracks. Some fans call Tuomas the Metal Mozart!

Tuomas Holopainen, the keybord player, is the mastermind behind it all. I STRONGLY recomend that you watch every video with lyrics.. I get that their music is enough to give you chills for days, but the storytelling... thats about 90% of what Nightwish is.. every song a story.. Tuomas said it himself.. storytelling breed we are.. cheer for the reaction guys! And I love how you always bring Evanescence to the table🤣

Thanks for the reaction. Yes, like you said about Floor, “She does it all”! And you haven’t heard her do her death metal growls or a lot of her other styles. She is the most versatile vocalist around. One of things I appreciate the most about her is her ability to emote - Floor hits you in the feels. If you want to explore more of her voice, there is a LOT to choose from, This new album is great to react to, otherwise, stick with the live stuff.

Floor has great vocal control and pretty much changes her vocal register at will. She can go from vocal fry(basicly growling) up to a falsetto within the same song and her vocal range is that of a soprano. It's a shame she don't growl alot with Nightwish, It's more of a Revamp era Floor. The other singers in current Nightwish are Marko Hietala, plays bass when he don't sing, he usually represents the darker male vocals. Then we also have Troy Donockley, who plays woodwinds, Ulieann pipes and a myriad of other instruments, he sings alot on this album aswell and leads the chorus in this song. Troy has a lighter vocal tone, so it's not really hard to figure out which male who leads.
Floor however are the 3rd front woman of Nightwish, Tarja Turunen left the band 2005 and then got replaced with Anette Olzon in 2007. Floor Joined in 2012 mid tour due to a fallout between the band and Anette.

Floor is actually from the Netherlands and speaks Dutch :)
Tarja is Finnish like the majority of the band and Anette (the 2nd singer) is Swedish. Floor currently lives in Sweden, though, with her Swedish husband (who happens to be the drummer of Sabaton, another fantastic band) and their daughter Freya. The male vocalist in the song you just heard is Troy Donockley, an Englishman who does vocals, plays pipes, flutes, whistles and guitars.
The person who whispers the Shakespeare quote is Johanna Kurkela, another Finnish singer and Nightwish's keyboards player and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen's wife.
If you're gonna do Tarja, I suggest Nightwish - The Phantom Of the Opera from their 2005 End of an Era DVD. (She was actually fired right after that show, but not because of her performance lol )

I'll say Lisa Gerrard, the singer from Dead Can Dance, and Florence Welch, the singer from Florence and the Machine, can be also a reference here. The main composer of the band is the keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen. He compose the orchestral parts too - they collaborate with London Philharmonic Orchestra for recording all orchestral parts.

Thank you for mentioning Loreena! Love her too!!!

  • @bigg2988
    @bigg2988 4 роки тому +2

    A couple notes:
    - a shout out to you on the comparison with Loreena McKennitt, who is almost the golden standard when it comes to traditional and folk-medieval inspired music. Yes, Floor can easily switch to that style when the music calls for it, as it more often does on the latter NIGHTWISH albums; although by comparison you had to hear that Floor's voice has a hard-to-conceal power in the lower end, so even when she goes for that moving melodic tone, you can distinguish from Loreena, who's voice is almost like a breakable crystal. What good fortune to have both those awesome singers!
    - Today, NIGHTWISH is pretty much a global phenomenon, BUT they started out as a Finnish acoustic folk band, and return to that sound - and language - from time to time... You could listen to audio of Tarja performing "Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan" off their breakthrough "Once" album if you a ready to have hearts broken - you can ask the Finnish fans what the lyrics are, but I am positive they are about life and death, and the music alone communicates that. Another purely Finnish song would be "Eramaajarvi" of their very first album, pure folk from Lapland.
    - And yes, as you will have figured out by now (I am a week late ;)) there is no Hans Zimmer in the band, and the leader, Tuomas, composes every note top to bottom - well, almost, but all orchestral parts for sure. Then he has his friend, orchestra teacher and conductor Pip Williams mix it and record it with - is it - London Philharmonic orchestra. They usually have preprogrammed orchestral stuff for the shows (and synchronized with pyros for outdoor concerts!), as it is hard to haul a whole orchestra around. :))
Anyway, have a good time investigating, there is a lot of mileage for you. Just imagine, there are like 5 to 10 other great Symphonic metal bands, plus a number of smaller ones, to branch out to (EPICA, THERION, EX LIBRIS, XANDRIA, EDENBRIDGE, WITHIN TEMPTATION, AMBERIAN DAWN, etc. Plus for a male baritone singer - FALCONER - a pretty special outfit, hard hitting metal but with a voice you would recognize in your sleep :p).

    Thanks for the great reaction.
They certainly write all of the music (well, Tuomas the keyboard does) but they don't bring them along on tour (too complex and expensive). They record that stuff and then play it either as synth instruments or as a back track.
There's a little background in several layers about the meaning of the lyrics and the song in general that will help you understand just what it's all about.
This song was a tribute to the life of Eugene Shoemaker. Shoemaker was a geologist and well-known as being "the father of planetary science". You may have heard of his name before as one of the discoverers of the Shoemaker-Levy (Levy was his wife) comet that broke up and collided with Jupiter back in 1994. Anyway, Shoemaker worked for NASA for many years and was part of the Apollo program as an astronaut until his being diagnosed with Addison's disease, which grounded him. Later in his life, he said that the greatest disappointment of his life was that he never got to go bang his hammer on the moon. He was killed in a car accident in 1997 while in Australia researching a meteor crater there. In 1999 a special urn carrying his ashes was attached to the Lunar Prospector probe which mapped the moon and then (intentionally) crashed into a crater near the lunar south pole (which by the way was named after Shoemaker already), making him the only person to be buried on another celestial body. The urn was engraved with the Shakespeare quote from Romeo and Juliet in the video.
The "Laudato Si" and "Ad Astra" bits at the end were Latin, meaning "Praise be" and "To the stars". But there's a little more to it than just that.
"Laudato Si" is a phrase taken from St. Francis of Assissi's famous song "The Canticle of the Sun", in which he praises the air, water, fire, sun, planets, animals, etc. as being our brothers and sisters. Death as well. And the most notable line regarding this song was:
"Laudato si, mi Signore, per sora Luna e le stelle:
in celu l'ài formate clarite et pretiose et belle."
    which means:
"Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,
in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful."
The term "Ad astra" is used in a variety of places in ancient Latin writings as well as in some modern contexts. Beyond its literal meaning, it implies the accomplishment of something that is practically impossible or very difficult. The first known usage is from Virgil in The Aneid, where he wrote "sic itur ad astra" or "thus one journeys to the stars" with the idea that it is how one accomplishes the impossible, and "opta ardua pennis astra sequi" or "desire to pursue the high (or hard to reach) stars on wings" when Aeneas taunts Turnus in combat. Another origin is Seneca the Younger, who wrote "non est ad astra mollis e terris via" or "there is no easy way from the earth to the stars".
After the disaster of Apollo 1 in which three astronauts were killed in a flash fire that destroyed their capsule on the launching pad, a memorial was erected with the phrase "ad astra per aspera" which means "to the stars through hardships".
The Nightwish folks are not religious, but they wanted to convey a sense of religious reverence for Shoemaker and the people like him who help us gain a scientific understanding of the world. This same attitude can be seen in spades in the Nightwish song "The Greatest Show on Earth" as well. This reverence for the natural world and for scientific understanding can also be seen clearly in Nightwish's "The Greatest Show on Earth" which includes some commentary by Richard Dawkins.

If you want to hear true symphonic metal, you have to listen to Angra, Therion, Rhapsody of Fire, Kamelot, Delain, Within Temptation, Epica... the list is enormous.

You should do "Hows the heart" from the new album.. Then do "Hows the heart" acoustic from Planet rock with Troy and Floor..You will see why then How Nightwish are the best band in the world with the best singers and musicians. Also Its not Marcus..Its Marco like Marco Polo.. Also do Beste Zengers with Floor Jansen She does almost every genre of music on the show..

BTW Eugene Shoemaker is the only human who's asses are buried on the Moon. Maybe he is seeing the Earth from the position at the end of this video I don't know. But if it is than its a wonderful view. BTW, the spoken voice you hear is Tuomas Holopainen the keyboard players wife

You should watch the documentary Please learn the setlist in 48 hours. Its about Floor filling in for the previous simger where she had 48 hours to learn the set because nightwish was touring. Nightwish is a live band. One of the few bands that are actually better live. At least i think so. By the way Floor is dutch but lives in Sweden. She is married to the drummer of Sabaton who is from sweden. Should i say it again?... ah yes for the fun; Amy Lee can carry Floors suitcase when Nightwish goes on tour. If you want to see what floor can sing go the youtube Floor Jansen Beste zangers. Its a dutch tv show where she sings songs from different singers live. From opera to Shallow of Lady Gaga.

I love Loreena McKinnett. Nightwish is always better live because you will get more guitar up in the mix. On their recordings it is always difficult to mix due to all of the different orchestral sounds combined with the rock instruments. This song is basically and Ode to Eugene Shoemaker an American geologist and one of the founders of the field of planetary science. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Tuomas the keyboardist writes all of the orchestrated and choir parts as well as the music and lyrics. Eugene shoemaker had his ashes deposited on the moon and on the capsule containing his ashes was inscribed the quote from Shakespeare. Nightwish uses backing tracks for live performances due to the cost and problems involved with touring with a full orchestra. However, Tuomas wants one day to do a special show using the full orchestra live on stage. I bet Tuomas likes Loreena, because he does like celtic flavored music. You will hear some celtic stuff in their music and some pipes and traditional instruments here and there. See you on the next one.

The song is about this guy en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eugene_Merle_Shoemaker, the first and the only human having remains of him buried in the Moon. Also, the Shakespeare quote heard on the track is inscripted on his memorial shrine (on Earth).

great reaction! consider that GLS it's one of their best, and it's difficult to reach the same level for all the other song. I suggest to start from the official lives to get to know the band before getting in the new stuff. anyway if you do some song with Tarja, keep in mind that the two singers are very different and they sound different, but both are amazing in their own way. So there's no need to go too deep in the comparison. Still you will have a preference, and probably will be Floor since she has a more "modern" approach. for the next reaction everything from Wacken 13 or Buones Aires 18 is good. For Tarja there's the End of an era dvd (highlights Slaying the Dreamer or The Siren).

Again, great job!! New sub here.
But, I am a little concerned that new reactors won't get the depth of what is Nightwish when they react to Endless Forms Most Beautiful, Human :||: Nature and Poet and The Pendulum. I think it is better to go through the older stuff to get a better grasp of NW and the genius that is Tuomas. And the versatility of NW. Just imagine that a reactor goes from "I want my tears back" to the depth of Music, Noise, Shoemaker or TGSoE. The difference is huge and yet it isn't for NW fans, because we as (for some longlife) fans are mostly expecting the versatility and I think that going through the older stuff would new reactors appreciate and understand it more. You can't put just one label on NW.
While one reactor (with the checkered shirt, sorry I don't know your names yet) listens with eyes closed once Floor starts the classical part, the other reactor starts laughing. This is not an attack or hateful comment, I think it just was a little overwhelming. And I don't blame you at all. It just is....
Please check out studio albums like Once, Century Child, Oceanborn with Tarja and Dark Passion Play, Imaginaerium with Annette.
I love their voices on the studio recordings but I am not that keen on their live performances. Some of Tarja lives are great, Annette's voice is not suited for live. But that is my and only my opinion.
    Keep on rocking... with NW!!!

Appreciate your comments and attention to detail. We are learning very quickly that NW is not something that can ever be fully explored in the scope of one video. I understand what your saying about starting from the beginning and listening from there. Like stepping into hot or cold water. One toe at a time. I like that we started NW Wednesdays. I personally would like to take these videos further into discussions of NW in the future. Though discussions involve other people, I am looking into ideas on how something can come together like that. I appreciate your insight. Many of our subscribers like you, are amazing with your desire to hold our hands and guide us through NW. NW is a journey to be taken, and we intend to get the full experience correctly, and because of subscribers like you, we are on the right track. Thank you.

    • @vedranb87
      @vedranb87 4 роки тому

@@muzikphiles6589 Pretty much everyone was aware that it was heading in that direction after that tour, but it was Tuomas' call to do it publicly via an open letter, on stage, to Tarja's surprise as well, to avoid most speculations about what and why. Even the tour was called "End of an Era", so it was done in an artistic way.
It was a hard breakup for everyone, followed by a lot of ill blood, but you know, a lot of great music came out from the deep feelings following that.
"Poet and the Pendulum" is amazing way Tuomas found to cope with the depression. I'm sure you will be asked to do a reaction video on that one, particularly the live version at Wembley stadium from 2015.

You can tell by how the letter is written, it wasn't easy for Toumas to do. A lot of emotions were expelled throughout the letter. He really did care for her and at the same time disappointed. This must have been very hard but it was definitely the right choice from what was stated about her. I'm glad he has such a love for the band that he was able to make such a sacrifice like that. In the end, it saved Nightwish. He mentioned how he would stop the band if Tarja left, but he didn't for the simple fact that he would have been quiting and leaving on a sour rotten note. He wouldn't want to do that to the band that he basically constructed and made. He states the same about Floor now, however instead of greed and fame, selfish needs, I see Nightwish ending one day but not the love everyone in the band has, for the band and each other, as it would have ended if they quit and left after Tarja. We really have gotten a lot of suggestions for Poet and the Pendulum and after reading that it is about this situation, I'm really interested to hear it. Thanks for providing us this information Vedran and thanks for being part of the channel. Be safe.
