There can be no better or worse sight than your own reflection, but these vain animals seemed very keen to admire themselves.
Innovative French photographer Xavier Hubert-Brierre travelled to Gabon with his wife and set up a mirror in several locations in order to capture animals walking by.
To see more of Xaviers content go to - ua-cam.com/users/XHB06400CANNE...
The results are stunning, with one of the more amusing reactions being from two leopards.
One of them takes several looks at the mirror before it is attacked by a second leopard, who calls off the ambush when he too spots Xavier's mirror.

But why write "knw" instead of "know"? Why do you have to spread this cancer?
The elephant was like “you guys are dumb its just a mirror”
Elphant are very inteligent
@Jesse MacKenzie they’re smart
Fun fact
The elephant is one of the few animals that can recognize themselves in a mirror.

Do your research please
1:20 That's incredibly clever. It's a pretty elaborate gesture that involves inducing a sensation in yourself and it's not something that chimpanzees would normally do when first encountering each other. He realizes that it's a reflection.
He's still utterly confused on why is that happenning
Yep the chimps definitely seemed to be testing the waters. “If I do this, will the thing copy me?” Whereas the gorilla’s only impulse was FIGHT TO THE DEATH.
I do believe the one scratching is older & the younger 2 noticed his strategy & both tried something similar
They all act like they instincts tell them
Leopard - Starts to atack it
Gorilla - Starts to smash it
Human - Starts cleaning it
would have worked better if it was a woman

1:04 *human reaction to a mirror*
Frank Armstrong Very original.
TheYvesL More like 0:30.
TheYvesL Human-like reaction would be more along the lines of, "look at that jack-ass showing off, thinking he's a tough-guy. He's an idiot. ...oh, wait...."

The elephant gave no fucks.
Sharxy Yeah, but he'll remember that face for next time.
MarsGundam lol
Sharxy There was an experiment where someone painted a red X on the front of an elephant. He looked in a mirror and put his trunk to the forehead.
Sharxy It probably knew it was just a reflection.

JudyRChung dont underestimate the power of jellyfish
The first gorilla having a fit, the chimps in the rain all “let me at em! Where’d he go?”, and the bird flying into the mirror all cracked me up 😂
I love how derpy the gorillas look when they move aggressively. Especially with their furry butts waddling back and forth
1:04 Look at how the human reacts. He thinks, "This is something I need to clean".
Inter-dimensional Lizard Aww humans 😪
It’s cause it’s silver not a mirror so they need to polish it to keep the reflection . It’s silver cause if the animals attacks it it won’t break
Humans, they always need to clean everything!
Happiness no just thought I’d clear things up for people that didn’t know

S. Depro lol and humans kill elephants just to make some money
+S. Depro Actually, hippos kill more people per year than elephants.
+S. Depro
Elephants may kill, but they are losing their homes through hostile takeover, and losing their family to careless humans.
At the end you could see the animals actually missed the mirror when it was taken away . Seeing your own reflection is psychologically affirming and comforting even to an animal. It was a stimulus that helped them escape the mundane boring aspects of life. I'll bet if they left it there long enough and kept it clean, the animals would figure out it could help them groom and clean wounds.
ok but you know it's CGI right?
A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself. Proverbs 18:2
In one study they left the mirror up for months and the silverback gorilla started bringing his entire troop to hang out by the mirror. He’s stand guard and left the family play and look at themselves in the mirror. It because a part of their life.
@@HowToTortuous what is??
@@HowToTortuousThis would be more effort to CGI than to just place a metallic mirror in a forest with a camera.
I love how you can see the moment when it dawns on the chimps what's going on. And then later we see a whole troop of them camped out by it.
That elephant was like: "Yep, still looking good."
JacksInn elephants in captivity have been proven to recognize themselves when presented with a mirror. In one experiment, they put a bit of water based red paint on it's head...when it looked in the mirror it touched the red spot as if to say: what the heck is that?
michael cochrane they see themselves always when drinking on lakes.
michael cochrane or the elephant could of thought its friend was bleeding. What you wrote certainly isn't scientific proof. Its very open for criticism and other ideas.
Mee He means it touched the paint on its head, not the reflection. How would the elephant know to touch there if it didn't recognise the image as itself..?
Mee ok maybe it remembered that the trainers touched him there or maybe it had a zit under the paint, or maybe a fly landed on it....got any more possibilities? Unfortunately the scientists who did the study were the ones who made the determination. And it wasn't the only test. And it wasn't the only animal...dolphins recognized themselves when they were seeing themselves in a mirror...even for the first time....
And Mathew is right, you being smarter than them, you should find out who they are, where their work was published, and call em out saying "YOU'RE WRONG I'M RIGHT"....I double dog dare you.....btw: could you record the conversation or the email? I need a laugh....

Patrick Kelley the man was just cleaning the mirror so it becomes clear
Shit, mate. You must be really fun at parties.
I think people need to remember this experiment doesn't exclude the other senses. It was obvious that some animals rely on smell more than others. The Elephant and the Chimpanzees were more self aware and cottoned onto it pretty quick.
Can you freaking *imagine* how far you'd go flying after being on the receiving end of that silverback's forearm strike. Man!
Even the chimp smacking the ground in its display. Probably break your leg if you were lying there . . .

I liked the line of sitting chimps waiting patiently for their turn to check themselves out ....and the one who started grooming his armpit as he watched himself lol!

That's one tough-ass mirror.
It's a bullet proof mirror
It's tin foil dumbasses watch the beginning

2fresh4yew Yes, it's probably an acrylic and therefore nearly unbreakable.

Lol, the chimp at 1:31 was practically twerking! And the one before who was grooming their armpit! They know how the mirror is supposed to be used!

Elephants, Dolphins and some breeds of dog can actually recognize that the reflection is of themselves and utilize it for grooming and looking at different parts of their body. It is a sign of intelligence above other animals.
arbitor365 Hmm? Hmmmm...
I believe you.
arbitor365 You forgot that some of the Chimpanzees here when they realized that there is nothing there, they realized it was themselves they are looking at. (learning there). They even made movements to test thier theory this is a cute video.
Susan Gardiner He did forget that. What a dumbass.
Yeah, my dog doesn't get fooled by mirrors. I've tried.
Susan Gardiner and they que up to see the mirror and watch their ownself xD
All this proves is how crazy the wild is. These animals need to be ready to defend themselves at a moments notice so the second they see another animal they are already in fighting mode even if that other animal is just a reflection.
I like how the elephant and chimps immediately recognized it was a mirror.
The only thing wrong with this video is that it's not long enough. I could have watched the animals interact with the mirror for way longer.

1:13 I love how the elephant is like saying "meh, it's just a mirror, dumb humans they underestimate my intelligence, I don't have time for this".
Except it doesn't know what humans, mirrors, or time is.
To my knowledge Elephants are one of the few animals that tend to recognise their own reflections quite quickly, so it's bot surprising it didn't seem to display much of a reaction.
Juan Pablo Warthon Wu i
ChaosSandwhich the most incredible part is the fact that they dont have access to a mirror in nature, and they still regconize themselfes
+vinicius viana
Well, let's remember that elephants live near large bodies of water, usually rivers, so they actually get to see their own reflection very often.
the chimps look to be going into a state of forlorn depression after being unable to interact with the other family of chimps in-spite of clearly having a lot in common .
It's probably one of the most amazing things they've seen
Watch as the human specimen attempts to clean the mirror

9 out of 10 animals developed a religion based around the mirror.

+vincentpol --That's true, and each one declared themselves to be the Gods of that religion. And they need money. YOUR money. Or bananas.
+Mike Foley And don't ever say its not true or you will be killed because off course we all need to believe it or the mirror god wont return. And since it doesn't there must be at least one in that group that act's as if they believe so they would need sacrifice's to try and find that person. xD
+vincentpol Buddhism. We are a reflection of everything we see.

It is one strange dino. It has fur on the head only instead of being scaley.

The behaviors of this fascinating creature are widely unknown, It may spend hours staring a a glowing rectangular block. Some even believe that strange creatures are trying to communicate with it. Although in the African region, It exhibits no such behaviors. Contrary in the American region, they are much larger. Sometimes riding around on strange vehicles In a region experts like to call The Super Market. Although the behaivors of this creature is a mystery research is underway On this facination, in the animal kingdom. This has been National Geographic, Signing off.

or you can just take a huge bong rip nd have the same sound;)
My thoughts exactly! I said wow what a beautiful voice, when I heard it, very distinct
dam bro hella edgy
1:24 Are they testing their motions to see if it is themselves? One scratches, another moves his had up and down, and the last jumps
They're Bonobos, and yeah, like the chimps (who were the ones all lined up) they are able to catch onto what's happening fairly quickly
This shows that they have self awareness, one of the clear signs of intelligence.
One teabags
Oh they definitely realize that it's themselves. They've done tests in captivity with chimps and bonobos and mirrors and they learn to recognize themselves in them. It's not right away but they do learn that the one in the mirror is themselves. One fascinating thing is they've seated one in front of a mirror like this then cover it and place a sticky dot on the mirror where the chimp's forehead would be.
They uncover it and the chimp sees their reflection with the dot so what do they do? They go and try to remove it *from their own forehead*. That's proof that they see themselves in the mirror. Only when nothing comes off do they go to the mirror and pull it off.
The orchestra strikes up "Also Sprach Zarathustra", until they removed the mirror.
The peer-reviewed publication article of these findings is, "Windex As a Behavior Modifier in Charismatic African Megafauna".
The difference between the young gorilla and the full grown one was amazing!

it's important to remember that different animals have different senses and many of them don't have dominant vision as we humans do. this greatly impacts on how the mirror appears to the animal as well. it's not just how smart the animal is.
