I remember watching this game with my dad as a 10 year old. The excitement we had at the end of the game was priceless. Rest in peace dad. Love you and miss you. Go Jets!
I think it’s because it was before corporations took over. This was a time when going to the game didn’t break the bank. The fans in the stands were blue collar and more passionate (in my opinion) than club seaters of today. The orange bowl was a “thunder dome” where visiting teams would have to call time out frequently because they couldn’t hear. Even parking was a challenge. Today stadiums are plushy and feel more like a food court mall. The vibe is Jimmy buffet and the silly “fins up” and not Queens “we will rock you” anthem of the early 80’s.
Yes I totally agree with you, seemed like the actual sport of football meant more to those players back then. They weren't as athletic as today's players but they always gave it their all.🤔
Anyone else watching here in July of 2020 and reliving these all time classics during this damn zombie apocalypse we are going thru? As a long time Jet fan, this was the game when Richard Todd finally lived up to all the hype. He was a true warrior in this game battling thru a broken rib and bum leg and still leading the Jets to the win in final seconds. Once again the Dolphins more than any other rivalry the Jets have had over the years have had the most memorable games....win or lose. This game was just another example.
No question. Richard shut a lot of mouths after this game. At least for a short while. I had wished this game would have carried with him longer. Winning in the clutch. It's what separates you from others.
Laying around this rainy Saturday morning, watching this game takes me back to the glory days of the Jets at Shea. No Jet game after 1983 has come close to the atmosphere naturally created in Queens. 16-15. Jets win. Football like it oughta be.
I so thoroughly agree with you. I attended this game. When it was over, I was so overwhelmed with happiness that I could not even find my car in the parking lot. I saw images of the game on every building and every street in Queens for a long, long time.
Thank you for posting this. I was at this game with my late Dad...11 years old and a Dolphins fan. Which was weird because we had season tickets to the Jets since 1964 and I went to almost every Jets home game with my Dad from the time I was 7 until I got my first job and started working on Sundays. My family moved from Long Island to northwest NJ in 1968 but my Dad kept the season tickets and took my oldest brother, then the middle brother...then me when it was my turn. The trek out to Shea and back was an all-day affair. I often think back now to all of those years and all of those Sundays my father made that trip with my brothers and me. Such great childhood memories... but not so much on this day when Barkum caught that pass...lol
I was at this game, incredible ending, Todd to Barkum for the winning TD, the eruption from the crowd at Shea was the loudest cheering I ever experienced at a live event, what a Epic day at good ol Shea .
Listen to that Shea crowd at 2:08:41. Enberg's 'OH!!' and an explosion of jubilation! I remember watching that game with my Dad at nine years old in our Bronx apt, and jumping up and down while my Dad was whistling up a storm! This is great to watch again...
One of the best jet games i have seen at shea. Richard Todd was playing with fractured ribs in front of 60 thousand loyal jet fans. Frank Sinatra was singing "NEW YORK , NEW YORK" over the pa system after Todd threw a td pass in the final minute as Shea Stadium rocked . IT was totaly electric. i actualy felt the place shaking. JETS AT SHEA THERE WAS NOTHING BETTER !!

I remember this game! One of the first games that I can remember, from the first NFL season that I ever followed, at the ripe old age of 7 years old! Thanks for sharing!
Very underrated performances here in the annals of NFL history. Richard Todd played this game w broken ribs & couldn’t even call out most of the plays cause it hurt so much. Gutsy gutsy effort.
Aaahh !! The Killer Bees and the Blackwood brothers....too cool !! Both teams were so much fun watching. I remember the match ups between these two teams through the years were crazy. Thank you for the flashback !!
I still remember this game like it was yesterday. The Cowboys are my favorite team, but the Jets have always been close to my heart, and when they won this game, I was celebrating as much as any Cowboy win. This win capped an amazing 4 year run they had against Miami (7-0-1). And the Dolphins were division champions 2 of those 4 years (79 and 81). Unfortunately, the Dolphins more than made up for those 4 years of futility by going 3-0 against the Jets in 1982…..stomping them at Shea on opening day, 45-28, winning on a game winning FG in Miami, 20-19, then winning the AFC Championship 14-0. But that 1981 team was fun to watch!!
@@ANTHONY0808able Especially in the 1982 playoffs where Todd led the Jets to road victories over the Bengals (the defending AFC Champions) and the Raiders(the #1 seed in the AFC that year)...no small feat!
Thanks for posting. Was nine years old on the edge of my seat watching this game. Feels like yesterday. It was a great Jets moment. Little did I know then that there were not going to be that many more great Jets moments for the next 40 years :(
Thanks for posting. Win, loss, draw- any of these games from this era I’m appreciative of because it allows me to re connect with my dad in some sort of way. Thanks.
I listened to the 4th quarter of this game on a portable radio, waiting to get into a Ranger-Islander game outside at Madison Square Garden! I'll never forget after Barkum's touchdown, you couldn't hear the announcers for 2 minutes. It was deafening! 1981-82 were amazing years for the Jets, and an incredible era of football! These were some of the best memories of being from NY!
Thanks for this. I was 14 years old and sitting in Lodge right above where Barkum caught the TD. Todd's best moment. Also, the crowd noise was loudest ever for Jet's game. Shea was not a football stadium but Jets were in New York and it got LOUD.
It is interesting that you should describe the winning pass to Barkum as "Todd's best moment." I know for a fact that Richard considers that moment as one of his finest memories.
The Mets wanted them out after 15 or so years and Rutherford gave them a better deal so they could get the most bang for the buck from that stadium with 2 hosting teams. But the Jets never looked right there. Shea was truly "home".
It's. The new york sack exchange from 1979-1982 with mark gastineau, marty lyons, joe klecko abdul salaam,on offense freeman mcneil, bruce harper, wesley walker one eyed man, richard todd from alabama who was joe nameth replacement and head coach walt Michaels and played at shea stadium in flushing new york.
I remember this game so well the Jets got a TD to win in the last minute. I was happy ! Too bad Michael’s didn’t stay on for a few more years. This was one team that could have won the Super Bowl with proper coaching. The others were Parcells teams and Ryan’s teams.
Tough loss that day for the Delfines, I was in the 8th grade at the time. As big a 'Phins Fan as I am I give credit to the NYJ that season. The New York Sack Exchange was pretty ferocious! I appreciate and respect good football and I want to say thank you for posting this!
The 1981 Dolphins were one of my favorite, we had season tickets. I had amnesia about this game....Miami went on to win the rest of their games and win the Division at 11-4-1, Jets finished at 10-5-1.
Miami has been my favorite team since 1972, I was 5. Never a David Woodley fan tho. In the SB loss to Washington he completed one pass in the second half.
Don Strock was a great passer, threw the ball better than just about any other Qb of that time, just could not stay healthy. His playoff loss to the chargers was one of the greatest games I ever watched. Along with Craig Morton the two best passers with matching bad knees. Todd had the sad task of trying to replace Joe Namath who was traded to the Rams because of his bad knees. If you get the chance to watch Joes last game as a Ram. Could still throw a beautiful deep ball but it breaks your heart to see him try to avoid the rush and see him wobble and fall down. All these great Qbs from that same era before they changed the rules to protect them from all the late hits and excessive roughing that went on. The same for Staubach with all the concussions he suffered, watched him get hit and just lay there on the ground totally unconscious and twitching. Then there was Lawrence Taylor breaking Joe Theismans leg on a Monday Night Game, you actually could see the bone. The quarter backs today all have it so much better, bur part of what made these games so much more fun to watch was how much more physical the play was. Guys like Dick Butkis literally playing on one leg and Jack Lambert with no teeth left! Those were the days!
Welcome back, Richard! I agree with you: ONE basic "home" uniform, ONE basic "road" uniform, NO "alternates/retros." It is my hope that you will find and upload either the Nov. 8, 1987 Eagles-Redskins game (great finish) or the 1988 Monday Night Football matchup between the Eagles and Giants. Both would be even greater! Keep up the great work!
I was at that game right in the end zone where the winning TD happened. The stands were shaking so much I was scared they were gonna break. Great great game!

I remember this in first run. This confirms that the whole media was rooting for the Jets that year. I remember that fan holding that "Super Bowl" sign right after they scored that last minute touchdown. But they're still waiting.
Nice pace to this game with all the commercials cut out. Probably my favorite NFL season, 1981, with so many dramatic games. The AFC East that year was loaded.
With sixteen seconds left and with broken ribs, Richard Todd throws a bullet to Jerome Barkum for a touchdown, the Jets only touchdown, the harsh screams and the earthquake noise at Shea Stadium was a super New York Jets treasured classic moment!!
At the end of the game, listen to that crowd!! Shea Stadium was a horrible football stadium, but the place had character. Gusty winds & airplane noise. Real grass, dirt & mud. Loud and crazy fans. Real, tough, hard and dirty football. Shea was their only true home, unlike the current boring, sterile environment at MetLife Stadium, which they share with the Giants. How I wish they had a stadium of their own in Queens, where they truly belong.
Never saw a football game at Shea but always wanted to. Saw the Mets several times. All the Jet fans were convinced this was their year. "Todd is God" chants resonated throughout NYC. The game, as I recall got significant write-up in Sports Illustrated. But look who finished first in division?

My family are the most loyal, most intelligent, most fanatical New York Jets and New York Mets followers in the entire World 🌎....the Mets will win the 2022 World Series and the Jets will make the playoffs and take the AFC East in 2023....no doubts.
Thanks Richard. I thought so. Had it saved but it was taken off. ? y are they not wanting people to see and share these classic games? I hate when the NFL network shows their so called classic games. Can't call them classics because the memories are still fresh.
Remember that game very well. That was back when season tickets to the Jets cost me $88 and you weren’t forced to buy pre-season games. You could also walk into the stadium with a giant cooler filled with beers.
The Jets should've won the AFC East in 1981, but they were swept by the Seahawks, who only managed a 6-10 record themselves. Those teams played home-and-home in 1981 because both finished 5th in 1980 (and Seattle did so again in 1981). The AFC East had 3 playoff teams in 1981, but none made it to the championship game (Cincinnati over San Diego).
Wow I was 8 years old my second year as a jet fan wearing my littleft Richard Todd jersey going nuts jumping on bed when he hit Jerome barKum in end zone thinking I was going to see a super bowl in near time we'll heart broken wild card loss to bills a few weeks later which was by the way the last NFL playoff game ever in NYC let's fast forward 35 years later still waiting for that super bowl p.s need to go back to thone uniforms
Welcome back, Richard. Needless to say, it is a pleasure to see your channel up and running again. Do you have access to the game that was played between the Jets and the Giants on November 1st, 1981? Thank you, John
The first game that people keep referring to is the day I became a Jets fan. My brother bet me $5 that Miami would win and after the tie he refused to pay me. I remember this game like it was yesterday.
Notice at 2:27. First Jets series. Richard Todd was playing hurt. As intense as this game was, there was gamesmanship here. "There's a certain code on the field, Let him play, don't hurt him." Today all defenses want to do is kill the QB.
Hello, John Holman. This is four years later and things have CHANGED. Back then, you said, "All defenses want to do is kill the quarterback." Today any defense better hope they don't even BREATHE on the quarterback.
+Richard Waldrup Whatever you do, please do not take this game off of youtube again. I remember going to Shea Stadium to watch a Phillies-Mets game with my dad and two uncles. This happened a long time ago when I was about 10 or 11, I think it was 2001. I like watching this to see the overall look of this park. It reminds me of how fortunate I was to experience and appreciate the atmosphere. I miss these old stadiums and ballparks because of the historical impact they hold.
+Dave Smith WOW!! I never knew the 1st game earlier in the season ended in a tie. I would have to get that one from a private collector. The Jets/Dolphins games from the early 80's were really cool. Thanks for suggesting.
This was a really good rivalry back during that time. Miami had a chance to put the game away with a Touchdown but had to settle for a FG and it cost them. Sometimes Don Shula RIP could be a little conservative.
This was the last time the NYJ would win during their 7-0-1 streak over Miami. Miami would go on to win the next 7 games and 8 out of 9. Ironically before this NYJ streak, Miami won 12 out of 13 head to head matchups.
brutal loss....next year fins got revenge with the 3 game sweep including opening day romp at shea 45-28, Uwe's game winning kick 20-19 and ending with AJ Duhe 14-0!

I was at this game...my Aunt and Uncle took me..they are Miami Dolphin fans..i'm a *Cowboys* fan..but I love a good game!!
was at that Miami game such a better a brand of football back..Love my Dolphins
Tony Nathan, and Andra Franklin. Two solid reliable backs, but not elite players. Tells you how good that Miami OL was.
Welcome back old friend and HNY to you and the family.
It's been a long time since I've been so happy to see a video in my feed, welcome back
+- landone - Hope to keep the good games rolling. Thank you.

My family are the most loyal, most intelligent, most fanatical New York Jets and New York Mets followers in the entire World 🌎....the Mets will win the 2022 World Series and the Jets will make the playoffs and take the AFC East in 2023....no doubts.
I can watch this game again.
Oh! my!
Such an Awesome Game
Fantastic- thanks for posting!
We got show the 1981 NY Jets some mighty love 💕 included qb Richard Todd
Amazing how many of these names I remember. The NFL will never be this great again.
The Man is back! Good work Waldrup!
Miami should have gone with Strock here. Woodley is the all-time epitome of 'They won in spite of him' IMHO.
+Chris Kreager Woodley was a good athlete and a better quarterback against weaker defenses. Strock was the man when you had to throw.
I watched this game live on TV as a teenager in Miami. I'm not ashamed to say that the result provided me with one of the traumas of my youth.
My favorite Jet game. Watching in my in law's back room. I jumped up, touchdown. Into the ceiling. How i didn't break any fingers I'll never know.
I may be in the minority but I loved this woodstrock era of the Miami Dolphins.
The Jets should've won the AFC East in 1981, but they were swept by the Seahawks, who only managed a 6-10 record themselves. Those teams played home-and-home in 1981 because both finished 5th in 1980 (and Seattle did so again in 1981). The AFC East had 3 playoff teams in 1981, but none made it to the championship game (Cincinnati over San Diego).
welcome back Richard !
I was 19 at this time! The good ole days.
Thank you for this.
J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!
Wow I was 8 years old my second year as a jet fan wearing my littleft Richard Todd jersey going nuts jumping on bed when he hit Jerome barKum in end zone thinking I was going to see a super bowl in near time we'll heart broken wild card loss to bills a few weeks later which was by the way the last NFL playoff game ever in NYC let's fast forward 35 years later still waiting for that super bowl p.s need to go back to thone uniforms
dominic eugenio It was a great time in which to be a NFL fan.
I enjoy this and the NFL updates I miss this
Welcome back, Richard.
We became JETS fans the same day my friend.
Glad to see u back!
+Yadwinder Singh Thank you my kind friend. Glad to be back.
nice bit of nostalgia to hear the WNBC station ID @ 1:30:57
Notice at 2:27. First Jets series. Richard Todd was playing hurt. As intense as this game was, there was gamesmanship here. "There's a certain code on the field, Let him play, don't hurt him." Today all defenses want to do is kill the QB.
I was there with/ my dad.
Hello, John Holman. This is four years later and things have CHANGED. Back then, you said, "All defenses want to do is kill the quarterback." Today any defense better hope they don't even BREATHE on the quarterback.
Whish the Dolphins and jets were still that good
I saw this game on my BW tv...Still was exciting!
Glad you're back!
+DaCoachMLHS Well thank you. I appreciate that & Merry Christmas wherever you are.
And to you, as well. I think we talked before about our DVD games lists. Do you have a compiled list of games in your collection? Ever trade?
Welcome back!!!!!!
+|King| Savage. Thank you bud.
Escobar Salvador I pray to God the NFL doesn't take this game down. These games do indeed represent an historical impact as a fan. Merry Christmas.
+Richard Waldrup Yeah they do, especially in old stadiums that were used for both football and baseball.
Great game Richard! Do you have the first 1981 game between the Jets and Dolphins(the 28-28 tie)?
+Dave Smith WOW!! I never knew the 1st game earlier in the season ended in a tie. I would have to get that one from a private collector. The Jets/Dolphins games from the early 80's were really cool. Thanks for suggesting.
***** Bob Trumpy was one of my favorite analyst, along with Merlin Olsen. Thanks for the 411.
That 28 all tie is the game that launched me into becoming a JETS fan...dammit..would love to watch that game again
This was a really good rivalry back during that time. Miami had a chance to put the game away with a Touchdown but had to settle for a FG and it cost them. Sometimes Don Shula RIP could be a little conservative.
Uniforms so much better looking back then.
Welcome back Richard it been a long time
+Jamal Lugo Thank you & Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you too
2:20 "There is a certain code out there on the field" It would be nice if they remembered it today.
I noticed that too, and agree 100%. Sportsmanship should be high on any athlete's list.
What a game
Before football was rigged. The good old days
Think I would rather watch these old games in place of current games. Everything was better the announcers, the updates and the games themselves .
This was the last time the NYJ would win during their 7-0-1 streak over Miami. Miami would go on to win the next 7 games and 8 out of 9. Ironically before this NYJ streak, Miami won 12 out of 13 head to head matchups.
Welcome back!!!!
+Forsyth1969 Thank you my friend.
David Woodley. Godspeed.
brutal loss....next year fins got revenge with the 3 game sweep including opening day romp at shea 45-28, Uwe's game winning kick 20-19 and ending with AJ Duhe 14-0!
Excuse me Mr. Enburg, it’s “Touchdown” Tommy Vigarito! 4:30
Richard did you post the AFC championship game at 1 time? If so what happened to the game? 1982 AFC champ. between the Dolphins and Jets.
+Mark Peacock I did, but it was awhile back. I'll try to post the game again and hope it doesn't get blocked.
+Mark Peacock I was not able to post this game on UA-cam because the NFL blocked it. I posted the game on Google Plus and added you to my circles, so you can watch it there.
I love how this video keeps popping up, vanishing, popping up, vanishing, and popping up again.
