They don't make them like this anymore. Playing in that weather, on that turf, in those pads, with those rules. Incredible.
Turf? What turf? That was a thin piece of carpet over cement
So true. How many plays did u see that were considered penalties in today’s game in that clip? Also no replay back then either. If ref called it then that was it. Glory days of football some would say.
@@AaronBridges you saw how Ken Anderson slid and 2 or 3 players went for his head and no penalty was called.
I know Right!!!
Pony cleats ,, they don’t make them no more either lol 😂 😂 👍
The Chargers went from one of the most brutally humid games ever to one of the coldest ever in back to back weeks in those 81 playoffs.
True!!!!
If I’m correct, they went from playing in 84 degrees to -9 so basically almost a 100 degree difference not to include the -59 wind chill. That’s insane!!
@@boogitybear2283 You’re right about that!!!!
They should get lots of credit
The Chargers could've played all their games in domed stadiums and still would've found a way to lose when it really counted.

One of the greatest announcing duos in NFL history
Watching and hearing their voices brings back a lot of fond memories.
John and pat are the best though
You’re right about that!!!!
This was a very well played game in such brutal conditions. Fouts said he could not grip the ball. Said Anderson's hands werel much bigger.
One of the coldest games in NFL history -59 wind chill that's brutal
-59 wind chill is just insane to me!
Brutal ain't the word...lol I feel like all nfl stadiums should have open/closed roof option.. especially greenbay
The Chargers probably participated in the greatest one-week temperature variance in league history. It was in the high 70's and humid in Miami, a week later the temperature was a negative 9 degrees with a wind chill of -59. With a wind chill factored in that is almost a 120degree swing!
I think it was -37 by the way the measure it today. Either way, brutally cold
But not THE coldest. It's crazy this game is not the coldest game ever played.
Remember this was just a week after the Chargers were literally carrying Kellen Winslow off the field in “The Epic In Miami”, an extremely physical shootout played in tropical conditions. Then just a week later they have to go into basically the tundra and get frozen out of Cincinnati in the “Freezer Bowl”. Not having home field advantage may have never been a bigger factor than with the 1981 Chargers, even bigger than other instances where that was a prominent factor.
Bengals would smoke them anywhere that year
Chargers 41 Dolphins 38 if I remember correctly, that was many moons ago already..... so I maybe wrong on the score but I know if I am wrong, I'm not too far off from what the score was lol.
"The Game That No One Should've Lost" I can remember the headlines in the papers the next day though. Dolphins, got beat in the freezer bowl by the Bengals AMD warmed their bones by their fireplaces on the couch watching the Super Bowl just like the Chiefs will be doing this year thanks to a team that played with pure heart this season
Especially Sunday's championship game against Kansas City. That, was one HELL of a game . I never cheered so hard for a team besides new England Patriots. (Yes im a die hard Patriots fan. Been since I was 3 years old and well before Tom Brady was ever on the field)
The Patriots were a Cinderella team for the first 24 years. Finally get things going for them with Eason in 85 and beat Marino's dolphins who were on fire that year but the underdogs came through and end up going to the big game up against one of the best and toughest team the nfl ever had, 1985 Bears...... and got crushed. Then they were the same olds pats like before 85 until 1993 or 1994 even Bledsoe proved to all he could be one of the key weapons they needed. And from 2001 to 2018 they became a fierce force that dominated almost every season.
I believe that the Bengals have this same path of greatness ahead of them after years of mediocre seasons and troubles getting a good team going. Joe got hurt his 1st year and this is technically his 2nd year playing, but his 1st complete season in the NFL and wow...... I'm still in awe about what I watched this past Sunday. They had heart, they played clean and fair and im just as excited about the Bengals going to SB56. They truly earned their ticket to the super bowl this year. That's not a questionable statement or opinion. It's fact, and i pray that this will be fact that they're going finally bring the Lombardi home.
I just want to say Congrats every Bengals player and coach on the roster this season.
And congrats to every single Bengals fan out there.
To every Bengals fan and to the city of Cincinnati ...... You can DO IT!!!! YOU WILL DO IT!!!!!!! you are the eye of the tiger, rise up to the challenge of your rival. Be strong, Be positive, Be Supportive of your boys, they made it there, but above all......they need you too, they play for you, they need all ofthe love and strong support you have for them. Be the champion that you have rightfully earned and deserve to be . You all earned this moment, and you can make this happen on February 13th. I stand with you all as well..... yes me, a die hard new England Patriots fan, sounds insane right. I Respect and support you all as well and will be rooting hard for your team.
2022 is the year of the Tiger according to the Chinese calendar. This is your year Cincinnati, your big day, your dream team, so light that city up like a mother fucker on Sunday and don't let up🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh...now THERE'S A GAME that was cold!--Cris Collinsworth
Best story about this game was after the loss The Chargers were stuck in Kentucky because their plane had ice on the wings. The county in Kentucky was a dry county so NO BOOZE on the flight back to San Diego. You lose, you can’t leave and no alcohol to dull the pain.
That sucks 😡😡😡😠😠😠
You watched that Missing Rings on the '81 Charges when Dan Fouts was taking about it, huh?
@@mr.russell5395 Yup. I forgot the name of the RB that said it. He was like you beat us please don’t keep us here. Dan Fouts’ fake Southern accent was funny. “Here in Boone County boy, there’s no liquor on Sunday.”🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s so funny. I’m from Boone County, still live there & since then that law has changed. Thank god lol. It wasn’t that it was a dry county it was no alcohol sold on sundays back then. Either way they couldn’t drink & like y’all said that just had to suck. I also saw that story on missing rings. I wish nfl network would do more of those. I love the documentary stuff they do.
@@AaronBridges they still have hard liquor laws until after 12 on Sundays. Tried to get a bloody at the bar at the airport and she could only serve beer and wine.
Only in the NFL will you find a packed stadium with -59 degrees of wind chill.

I tip my hat to all those brave loyal fans who endured 3+ hours of extremely frigid conditions to support their team.
Bungles first ever AFC Championship Game
I would have given up my tickets and watched the game in the comfort of my home. I'm a loyal fan of my team, but I ain't stupid 😂
Yeah, tip your hat to stupidity. No reason this game should have been played during this weather
My dad had tickets. His 1977 diesel engine VW Rabbit would not start in that weather.
My parents were there Bengals season tickets from 1978-2000 until we had to relocate for a job opportunity. My dad drove my mom & moms sister to the game with no heat on & the windows down to try & get them use to the conditions. My dad worked out on the railroad in conditions like that.
Cris Collinsworth played in this game as a rookie, catching 2 passes for 28 yards. Imagine one of your earliest pro football experiences being one of the most brutal cold weather games in NFL history, I wonder if he’s ever talked about what it was like, I bet he has some stories to tell.
I think I've heard him say that he knew it was going to be brutal, temperature wise, when the first thing he heard on his alarm clock radio as soon as he woke up was an announcer saying "Don't let your pets outside today".
Probably so!!!!
I was 9 yrs old and bundled up at this game!!! Rip dad I wish you were here for this one!!!!
Good to know, hope you stayed warm somehow!!!!
My family has had season tickets for the Bengals since the 70’s my father was wanting to take me to that game along with my older brothers but my mom said no because it was too cold & I was only 6 years old at the time. So my uncle went in my place. I don’t remember too much but mom said I cried because I couldn’t go. I did get redemption though in the 1988 season. I got to go to AFC champ game in Cincinnati against Bills & that’s was a great memory. Now this Sunday I get to share something I’ve been waiting for since that Champ game & that is being able to watch my childhood team the Bengals play for another chance to go to Super Bowl with my kids & along with my mother & father. It’s been a long time & fingers crossed they can pull off the victory. WHO-DEY to all the Bengals fans out there & beat the Chiefs.
Thanks for sharing a family moment.
And congratulations on beating the chiefs omg what a game!!
@@arnoldjack7956 I have to admit I was rooting for the 49ers a bit in the NFC Championship so that the Bengals could have a 3rd SB try against them.
Your mom was right. You were six years old.
The Chargers had their chances between 79 and 81. The year before they had the Raiders at home in the AFC Championship and lost. Then the year before lost in the divisional round at home to the OIlers without Earl Campbell and their starting QB. Fouts threw 5 interceptions and lost 17-14. After 1982 season, the window closed on the Chargers.
Reading this and watching this game. Is it safe 2 say that Fouts was overrated?
@@jabarijivens763 i wouldnt say that..Fouts was a great QB..deserving of the HOF..but he was terrible in the playoffs..no getting around that

Freezer Bowl and The Catch on the same day. A week after the Epic in Miami. You know it's a good playoffs when at least three of the games have nicknames.
Everyone talks about the weather, but the major difference in the TWO games Cincy won by 20+ points in 1981 over the Chargers was turnovers. Five in the regular season by San Diego at home, including a killer 102 yard pick six by Louis Breeden when the Chargers were trying to get back in that game, then four more in this game. Bengals got a taste of their own medicine against the 49ers, losing the turnover battle 10-2 to San Francisco in their two losses to them.
Bump what ppl say it's football weather it ain't meant to be played in hot temperatures all the time
The Bengals were 4 and a half point *favorites.*
I remember listening to this game on the radio when I was ten years old. This is where my love for the Bengals started.
Wow excellent choice. This is one of my favorite games, and I'm glad you decided to spotlight it. I loved the 1979-1985 San Diego Chargers. Even with a defense that got progressively worse, I just loved their ability to score at will. The deck was definitely stacked against the Chargers here having just played that overtime epic in Miami, and then having to travel to play in one off the coldest games ever. I think Kellen Winslow said he still had frostbite in his toe from this game. Dan Fouts mentioned that throwing the ball was like throwing a brick, and unfortunately for him he could just never get a really crisp spiral naturally like Ken Anderson could who fared much better. The Bengals were just the better team anyway, and they clobbered the Chargers in San Diego that year earlier.
Don't forget that the Bengals beat these Chargers down in the regular season 40-17. This wasn't just "unlucky weather shut down the Chargers offense." The AFC's best team deservingly won the AFC that year. Either way, the 49ers were gonna win the big one, though.
The team with the best chance to stop the 49ers in 1981 wasn’t the Bengals or the Chargers but the Cowboys in the NFC championship. If Drew Pearson could have just avoided being tackled, it would’ve changed the course of history.
The Bengals were 4 and a half point *favorites.*
I'll never forget this game as I was suffering the worst hangover of my life. I had attended a bachelor the night before and drank moonshine for the first time and last time.
Isn't Cincinnati right next to Kentucky? And you've only drank moonshine ONCE? 🤔
And then Bengals went on to lose a heartbreaker giving the Niners their first championship
I loved it. I was 13. First of our 5 championships🙂
The Bengals were the only team to give Joe Montana and the 49ers a run for their own money. Both games, no other team came close to beating them, Cincinnati came within a TD of both games against the 49ers. 49ers were stronger and more efficient than Cincinnati in the first game, Bengals finally came to play some ball after halftime and damn near got the Lombardi. The second game was much closer and they woulda had it but they left the 49ers with just enough time on the clock to drive 90 some yards and score with 30 seconds to go. Either way. they were both truly Great games and both teams gave their all in both games.
Had the Chargers won that game, we would’ve seen Montana vs Fouts in the SB and it likely would’ve been one of the greatest QB matchups ever if that happened
Montana faced Marino 3 years later
Their game in San Francisco the following year was a tantalizing what if...41-37 Chargers in one of the best regular season games of all time. Over 1000 yards of offense.
N a dome on top of that
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 I swear we watch the same videos
SF still would of won regardless who came out of the afc
Watching steam rising off the Ohio River you KNEW it was damn cold!🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶
I honestly miss riverfront stadium. It was my first baseball and football game.
It was a cookie cutter stadium!!! Look at all those seams on the field with the sliding pits, pitcher's mound, home plate, and the warning track!!! Had to be a nightmare playing football on that field!!!
I have a hard feeling that Dan Fouts and the Chargers must have had a very tough time playing in such blustery weather conditions at that time
Especially since they came back from Miami in the Divisional
I think things like that are way overblown, it's not like the Bengals players were all from cold-weather climates like it's in their DNA or something. Even the broadcaster said the reason they played in Cincinnati was due to the chargers losing to them during the season in San Diego.
Cincinnati has an average high temperature of close to 40 degrees Fahrenheit all winter.
This game was just before my 12th birthday, and I lived in a Dayton suburb about an hour to the north. I seem to remember poking my head outside and instantly regretting it. The wind chill wasn't -59 where I was, but it was below zero. And of course that same weekend, Dwight Clark made "the catch."
RIP Dick Enberg, Merlin Olsen, and those who perished from complications related to the coldest game in NFL History.
What does that mean? Both dudes died almost four decades later because of one cold game in the 80s?

The Ken Anderson HOF debate is such an interesting one. Yes, he never won a Super Bowl which unfairly hurts him, but he really did well with teams with lesser talent and was in the same division as the Steel Curtain for a decent part of his career. If I'm not mistaken, Football Outsiders rated all of the best quarterback seasons ever and I think Ken Anderson had 2 seasons in the top 10. His career was kind of like Kurt Warner where he played really well near the beginning of his career, then for the middle of his career wasn't 100% healthy, then for the end of his career played really well.
I hope he gets in. On any other team, especially one in a big market, he would have won a Super Bowl and been in the HOF already.
Kenny Anderson Ken Riley and Bill Bergey should be in the Hall of Fame.
If ken Anderson gets in the hall of fame then so should cam they both have identical stats besides rushing stats
What hurts Kenny is that even though the Cincinnati Offense and West Coast Offense are the same, brought to life by one man the same man, the Cincinnati Offense is more well balanced utilizing short accurate passes with Paul Brown's history/need for a big back. So its a slower more balanced attack. The West Coast Offense is definitely more pass happy eliminating the big back. Think of it this way the Cincinnati Offense is a first gen Corvette whereas the West Coast Offense is the Stingray and newer models. They're all Corvettes "BUT".
Ken Riley and Bill Bergey are another head scratching conundrum. Let me add the NFL and sports writers in those NFL cities hated/feared/envied Paul Brown. He came in from another league kicking ass and dominated for ten years. Look at the three teams the NFL gave to the AFL, an AAFC team that dominated them, a team with the name of an AAFC that became a success and the worst team in the NFL. Good riddance bye bye no big loss on the NFL's part. And that will to this day hurt any player for the Bengals.
Miserable weather!
Fouts had a terrible day trying to throw, but Kenny Andersen (Best QB not in the HOF) had a nice day in brutal conditions.
You’re right about that!!!
Ken was 14 for 22 for 161 yards. Fouts was 15 for 28 for 185 yards.

Horse manure, champ.
The Chargers went from probably the hottest playoff game ever heat index wise to the coldest playoff game ever windchill wise in 1 week
As has been said, the Chargers had a brutal couple of weeks. In the divisional round, they played the Epic in Miami which was extremely humid and felt like high-80’s/low-90’s. Then one week later, they play in the coldest feeling game in NFL history (I think the readjusted forecast years later was that it felt like -39). And all while playing football and the all the demands that come along with that!
I wonder how many Chargers players became sick (illness) after going through this stretch?
4:00 Rolf Benirschke 7 years later took over as NBC's WHEEL OF FORTUNE HOST from Pat Sajak.
Ken was 14 for 22 for 161 yards. Fouts was 15 for 28 for 185 yards.
-59.... I cant imagine the convo about not delaying the game...
"So its supposed to feel like -59 today, should we reschedule the game?"
"Nah its the 80s and we arent nerdy wimps!! Id make em play even if it was -100 out!!!"
"Uhhhhh....... ok, ig theyre gonna play in temps that can kill humans.."
Odd how it’s bright sunshine when it was so cold.
I watched that game. Very enjoyable. Who Dey.
Thanks for the video NFL throwback! Does anyone happen to know any brawls that occurred from the 1977-1998 seasons?
I remember that stadium. I bet it was cold enough in the locker room that day.
Chargers went from blowing a massive lead in steamy Miami to playing in one of the coldest games ever played in Cincinnati. They would’ve had a hard time as a warm weather team as it is playing in this game, but they literally had no chance given the circumstances. They won the rematch in 82 in San Diego which makes me wonder what if this game happens in CA if it changes the outcome?
Different teams, different circumstances in 1982. These teams played in San Diego earlier in the year and Cincy whooped them 40-17.
@@manuginobilisbaldspot424 but that doesnt mean the Bengals wouldve won again if they had played with favorable weather
