Wow,I've seen Marino look sharper,it didnt look like the ball was coming out of his release right, passes were not very tight and he was also underthrowing a lot, witch is not typical at all for him, just doesnt look like the norm Marino passes, maybe he had an injury on his hand or something, idk??
Damn this brings me back, watching This Marino era offense,Gastineau gets the crowd into after it looked like the jets may run away with the game but Marino had other ideas,in the blink of an eye it went from jets up 17-7 to Fins up 21-17!!man can we imagine for a min if DAN MARINO came into the league in this era??this guy would be hangin up 60TD's and 6,000 yrds, the way they protect QB's today??my Dolphins should be ashamed of themselves for letting him retire with not even one more trip back to the big game!!unfortunately for Marino the NFC was a machine throughout his entire career with the exception of his last couple yrs and those Dolphin teams NEVER brought a good enough D to get it done and even if he got there I just dont think he woulda had the D to help him cuz ALL of those teams were very good to GREAT on offense and they ALL had even better D's so it woulda been pretty tough had he got there with any of the teams they built up around him back then, with a perfect example of his lone trip to the SB but his teams were never even good enough on offense, let alone Defense to compete with those NFC teams cuz the offense was ALWAYS very one dimentional with no running game to be found,so it was like MARINO was so damn good that they almost got it done a couple of times even tho they were definately out gunned on BOTH SIDES!!
Yeah it was, I remember the game. Didn't watch it live because I was likely watching who ever Madden and Summerall covered that day but I remember the highlights. Felt like O'Brien and Marino had a seasons worth of highlights in this game alone. Still not as good as the Nat Moore Helicopter though. That one I did see live and it was the most memorable non scoring regular season play I can think of.
@@johnliberty3647 Same here. I watched the coverage of Falcons vs Cowboys that day. It didn't quite measure up to this game, but had an emotional finish at the end. #NFL86
we had the same game in my market too, I remember Atlanta winning but Cowboys made it into FG range for a win or tie but no time left on the clock as either Hill or Pearson was forced out of bounds. One of the more exciting games I have seen as far as a close game goes.
Imo, this rivals if not better than the epic in Miami 81’ playoff game vs chargers. Both games had same elements of a thriller! Fair to say QB play from this game is better than the 81’ game. Miss these times in the NFL
I was 12 years old and I remember like it was yesterday. O’Brien became my favorite Jet still to this day. I still have his jersey. . This game made me a Jats fan for life! Never say never!
Back when Miami Vice was the tv show. And the New England Patriots where beat by both teams a lot back then. And my step dad Joe pulled for Miami and I pulled for the Jets. I miss my step dad.
To be fair to the Patriots of this time, Patriots won the division that year and were coming off an AFC Championship season as well as the only team to score points against the 85 Bears in the post season.
51-45 then isn’t different from now. People need to stop pretending there have been these rule changes that have ACTUALLY changed anything. It’s offense’s greater proactivity and increased physicality and sophistication that increased scoring
Up to 1986 maybe. This game set a record for combined yards passing (884 yds.) which stood for nearly 25 years. It was broken twice in the 2011 season. First by Miami and NE 906 yds. and then smashed in the last game of the season Lions at Packers (Jan.1,2012) 971 yds. A game in which the lead changed hands with every score from 2nd quarter on. A total of 11 times. Lions qb Stafford had 520 yds. passing and they lost the game 45-41. Aaron Rodgers didn't play. Matt Flynn started and passed for 480 yds.
Offense has surged ahead of defense. Period. Defense hasn’t fallen so far behind though. Its own sophistication etc. has grown as offense has grown. The playbooks nowadays are far bigger than in the past.

Glad I finally saw this! I've heard about it for years! Greatest non-playoff game I've ever seen...though the Jets totally fumbled in OT and got away with it. Thanks for posting!
Jets also got away with a fumble by O'Brien on the finally drive in regulation. Ball went backwards, out of his hand, but call was ruled incomplete pass.

I'm a huge Cowboy fan. I didnt have the satellite dish yet. I got it a few years later. I live in NY so I couldn't watch the Cowboys if they weren't on regular tv. However I watched this game at my Uncle John's house who is the biggest Jet fan I know. It was fun to see his reaction. It was a real fun game. Just to Express what satellite tv meant back than. Ha. We installed a 10 ft dish on our roof. There was no sunday ticket blah blah. . With that dish you were able to watch pretty much every NFL game. You had to find it by searching which meant the Dish would move fo pick up a signal in orbit. It was the greatest thing in the world back than lol. I never ever missed a Cowboy game from 1987 till today living in NY lol. So long story that I should have made much shorter...it was great to watch this game with my uncle who is a huge Jet fan. This was a classic game.
I vividly remember watching this game as one of the greatest regular season matchups ever!!! It’s too bad it wasn’t the Super Bowl!!! I still have Dick Enberg’s voice ringing in my ears for days going: O’BRIEN GOING FOR IT ALL TO WALKER….TOUCHDOWN!!!! OHHHHMYYYYYYYY!! O’BRIEN TO WALKER FOR HIS 4TH TOUCHDOWN PASS AND CATCH TODAY!!!!
1:17:25 « Wesley walker scores again !!!! » one of the first regular season game i watched ever. Game of the week on sky sports presented by Bob Payton. Still have it on a VHS ! Thx for the memories Richard ! You’re simply the best for past NFL games uploaded on youtube... the return game was a blowout on MNF 45-3 miami if my memory serves me well
I realize the points/shoot out was the story of this game and rightfully so. Having said that, as a youngster watching football in the 80's, one the coolest things was Reggie Roby punting. Don't know why but I was always mesmerized by that cat.
Jets vs dolphins is an underrated rivalry. They have the best games in rival history. 82 championship, this game, fake spike game, and the Monday night miracle game.
I heard a whistle during the loose ball on that OT kickoff, and there was no "clear and immediate recovery" rule for another 25 years, so even if replay had buzzed, they wouldn't have been able to do anything. This was misinterpreted by a LOT of announcers in those days--I remember Bob Trumpy going off in an Oilers-Browns playoff because replay ruled a forward pass a fumble, but couldn't award the Browns the ball because the whistle blew.
cool game - Toon, Walker and Schuler were a nice trio of weapons. The Jets just couldn't find the long term solution at QB in that era: Todd, Ryan, O'Brien, Eason they tried.
I have been watching a lot of Jets games over the past two weeks. The Jets fielded some good football teams in the 80s. They never could get over the hump.
I had heard about this game and seen highlights for years. First time watching the whole thing, and I felt like I was watching a game from right now. As weak as the two defenses might appear to be, remember this was back when they could play defense in the first place :) Losing Hugh Green was a blow to the Dolphins; he had been brought in to provide some "dog" in a puppy-like defense for the Fins back then. Among the best regular season games ever played, to be sure. And these two teams played two other classics as well, in 1994 (the fake spike) and 2000 (the never-ending MNF game).
This is what kept Marino Dolphins out of Superbowls. As a little kid I still remember Bob Griese, No Name defence, Mercury Morris, Jim Kiick, 2 Superbowls, the only undefeated team period. Only thing Jets had to cheer about for a number of years was Joe Namath,s jersey hanging on the stadium walls. Nowadays Miami uniforms are worse than any old USFL team. Yuk! Puke! Vomit!
Love me some vintage Dan The Man but as I've gone back thru a ton of these old gms cuz I grew up in CT so I only had access to maybe 6-8 gms a yr give or take a couple depending how well Miami was playing that yr but I've noticed that as much as I loved the Marks bros they both did not have very good hands, they dropped a TON of passes and if u notice, even this gm both seemed more comfortable catching with their body if possible,I dont take away from them, they were still damn good after the catch or DUPER just the GO route, but over the middle catching with just hands they dropped a lot of Marinos passes, but they were still an incredible 1-2 punch and at that time they were probably the best 1 and 2 duo in the league and I think most have Clayton maybe nudging Duper but not me I liked Dupe for one reason,he was a much better take it to the house WR!!
Ken O'Brien was much better than he seems to be given credit for. I suppose when there are 3 hall of fame QBs taken in the first round of your draft class, it easy to be forgotten. Not his fault he was stuck with bad coaching. At least Walton like him. Never will know why Coslet had a problem with Kenny.
I agree that Ken O’Brien was victim to comparison & especially w/ Marino coming pick after him. He wasn’t a bust , just not a HOF player. I think JETS fans are harder on him than anyone else, but they’re also very vocal so it permeates the remembrance more than anything else. To lump him in the Todd Blackledge dept. ( like I’ve heard before more than a few times ) is insanity.
A lot of people left this game before the finish. But not me. Section 325 front row upper deck. I almost went over the rail when Wesley hauled in the "78 fullback hide" to tie it.
@Harry Diaz Hm. I was very young but they used to talk about it when he came to play the Patriots at Shaeffer and Sullivan Stadium. Maybe they were kidding on the broadcasts?
John Offerdahl couldn’t do it all. 10 years later their D would be their strength but the offense would be old and/or weak. D had J. Taylor , Gardener , Z. Thomas Madison and Buckley/Surtain .... but gone were Duper & Clayton in lieu of Gadsden and McDuffie. The running game never showed up until later w/ Ricky Williams ( post Marino ) and Marino himself just had a lot of miles.
Huge Jets fan from Long Island. I remember watching this game live. Great time for football. Not like now where after every 2 yard run, the player has to thump his chest like he did something no one else has ever done and then start some kind of dance.
3:04:57 'Walker touchdown! OHHH MY!!' 3:11:51 'To Walker! Touchdown! 'OHH MY!' Enberg with his great signature calls at the end of regulation and in OT. Remember watching this live when I was 14. Such a great win against the hated Dolphins!
Yep, I was 14 too. Believe it or not, I was a Dolphins fan when the game started, and became a Jets fan as time went on (during the game). 49 years old, and still a die hard Jets fan. Wesley Walker became my all time favorite player.
After watching Dan Marino throw for 448 yards and *six* touchdowns -- only to see Miani lose *anyway* -- Dolphin fans got just a small taste of what long-suffering Charger fans had been going through for five years. Needless to say, this was Chuck Studley's last year as Miami's defensive coordinator.
The Jets opened the season at 10-1 only to lose their last five regular season games. They rebounded to win in the first round of the playoffs. They concluded their season with a nail biter loss to the Browns.
@Kevin Hunter Great points... Remember that at the beginning of this game... The Jets already had a LOT of injured secondary players. They had to pick up free agent guys just to play this game. Then the players up front on the defensive line and linebackers got hurt later that season. After that 10-1 start the whole defensive unit had been hit hard with injuries. Makes one wonder what the Jets could have done IF they had stayed relatively healthy that year. The NY Giants had very few injuries as a team that season. Safety Terry Kinard got hurt bad in the second Redskins game. By the way Kinard was a very good player for the Giants. The relative lack of injuries helped them finish strong 14-2 and roll through the playoffs.
One of the most underrated greatest games ever

I had tickets to this game. I worked for Trifari and one of the employees gave me her tickets. The day of the game, my Dad decided he was too busy and we never went.
The Jets and Dolphins have played a lot of memorable games!
You can see the fake spike game on youtube also. :)
Thank u for the upload of the full game! Even the halftime show!! I watched on television that day- took me way back!!!
Don't know why this popped up on my on my feed and further more why I'm watching it but I'm here.
Don Shula and Dolphins caught lightning in a bottle once , 1970 -1974 , after that it was heartbreak losses in the big games the Rest of his Career .
I was at this game. What a classic. I’ll never forget it.
Thanks for adding these absolutely spectacular games! Love everything about them, they are why i loved NFL football for a long time!
You're welcome Brian.🏈
This was an awesome game. Is it me or are the jerseys in those days so much better than todays outfits. Fantastic game.
Classic game from the 1986 season.
Remember it vividly.
You’re simply the best for past NFL games uploaded on youtube... the return game was a blowout on MNF 45-3 miami if my memory serves me well
Thank you for watching my channel SF49ersfanatic
Damn I was 5 years old when this game on tv
SHULA TOOK SUCH PRIDE IN HIS DEFENSE WHEN HE WAS A PLAYER AND GAMES LIKE THIS MUST OF KILLED HIM INSIDE
I was 16 in 86, miss the Dan marino days, Dan Marino super Clayton few years earlier the killer bee defense,
Giants fan for more than 35 yrs..but loved this defence..New York Sack Exchange!!!!
After SBIII, perhaps the greatest Jets game ever.
I realize the points/shoot out was the story of this game and rightfully so. Having said that, as a youngster watching football in the 80's, one the coolest things was Reggie Roby punting. Don't know why but I was always mesmerized by that cat.
He was on the Hall of Fame ballot one year. Only one punter is in the HoF, the Raiders Ray Guy.
O'Brien

DAN MARINO

TOTAL YARDS
Jets 581 MIAMI 485
It’s crazy this game was so close and the next time these teams played the dolphins won 45-3
Jets vs dolphins is an underrated rivalry. They have the best games in rival history. 82 championship, this game, fake spike game, and the Monday night miracle game.
When players had fun and played with passion. Not all ego and business.
Rather see all these games I missed all these years ago.
Marino. Best pure QB
Jets v. Dolphins is ALWAYS a can't miss! Thanks again! Got any Joe Namath games?
I'd forgotten two things about this game: no Freeman McNeil and how important Rocky Klever was as a target.
Remember watching the whole game! One of the greatest ever 🐬 🐬
NFL '86. Miss the old days when the NBC pregame/halftime/postgame show was NFL + the year #. Think this was the last year they did it this way
cool game - Toon, Walker and Schuler were a nice trio of weapons. The Jets just couldn't find the long term solution at QB in that era: Todd, Ryan, O'Brien, Eason they tried.
I remember watching this game live and recording to VHS.
I was born in June of 86 and I’m a jet fan go jets
I have been watching a lot of Jets games over the past two weeks. The Jets fielded some good football teams in the 80s. They never could get over the hump.
All this time and I didn't realize refball screwed the Dolphins at the end 🤦🏻♂️
Yuk! Puke! Vomit!
greatest game ever played
'the recovered muff " Enberg
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
This is amazing to see again. You rule and ya got my sub!!! 😄
You're welcome GREEN BEAN JETSFAN!!🏈
Johnny Hector a very underrated back, and forgotten by just about anyone besides old school Jets fans
This a great shootout between the two quarterbacks from the class of 1983 draft.
I remember watching this game with my brother👍
Ah.. the fans before psl's music to my ears! HOPE THEY BRING THESE UNIFORMS BACK 2023 Let's GO JETS!
During the draft in 83, they kept calling Ken O'Brien, Ken Davis. He attended U of Cal-Davis. Nobody knew who he was. It was hilarious.
I was at this game What a game,
One of the greatest games EVER! As a Jet fan, definitely top 3 ever (unfortunately born after SB3..)! Beat the Fish!!!!!
Most underrated wide receiver in NFL history. Had he played with a good QB he would be in the HOF.
Was there that day. Took a few days to get my voice back. If it was played with today's rules both teams could have scored over 60.
Greatest regular season NFL game EVER
Stop the stupidity.
The punter forgets his shoes. Classic. He wore a gold Rolex on the field in every game he ever played.
@Harry Diaz Hm. I was very young but they used to talk about it when he came to play the Patriots at Shaeffer and Sullivan Stadium. Maybe they were kidding on the broadcasts?
This game should clear up any doubts as to why Marino never won a Super Bowl. Miami had an ATROCIOUS defense for most of his career.
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU'VE JUST WON THE COP OUT COMMENT OF THE DAY!!! YOU'VE WON NOTHING
YOURS TRULY THE ALL CAPS KING!! HAS SPOKEN
As great a coach as Don Shula was, he really was a pretty lousy GM.
@@mrtnt3462 stop it. Marino was short changed
That’s a lie. The defense kept giving him the hall back then he failed when he had to win the game.
Huge Jets fan from Long Island. I remember watching this game live. Great time for football. Not like now where after every 2 yard run, the player has to thump his chest like he did something no one else has ever done and then start some kind of dance.
3:04:57 'Walker touchdown! OHHH MY!!'
3:11:51 'To Walker! Touchdown! 'OHH MY!'
Enberg with his great signature calls at the end of regulation and in OT.
I miss Dick Enberg...
@@adetunjil6827 Me too
1986 jets and giants were both good that year I would have been nice if they both played Esther in the super bowl
Dan's dad worked as a salsa instructor and so was home on most days in the afternoon where he taught Dan to throw really hard before he went to work
After watching Dan Marino throw for 448 yards and *six* touchdowns -- only to see Miani lose *anyway* -- Dolphin fans got just a small taste of what long-suffering Charger fans had been going through for five years. Needless to say, this was Chuck Studley's last year as Miami's defensive coordinator.
Wasn’t this the season when the Jets and Giants went 10-0 and the Jets fell apart after that? lol
Giants also lost their first game that season against dallas that year
The Jets opened the season at 10-1 only to lose their last five regular season games. They rebounded to win in the first round of the playoffs. They concluded their season with a nail biter loss to the Browns.
@Kevin Hunter
Great points...
10-1 for the Jets. Then O'Brien got hurt. Still after all that, had Cleveland in the divisional round all bagged up....then let em escape.😩😩
