I agree fue is one of the main kickers, along with maintenance work at $95 per hour, I now use my truck to haul my RV for R&R. and still fuel and maintenance is high, a trucker can never win.
My husband has been driving over 30 years in the industry and has seen it drastically change. No more unions. Your forced to drive illegal and your right all calculated together it rounds up to be over 60 hours a week. Oh, I forgot there is not respect for the driver anymore. So now we are considering O/O.

A driver gets out of his rig, and goes to relax at a trucker's rest stop, so what do trucker's do to rest away from driving? Well, that is, of course, go to a driving game and do, guess what..., drive in a video game of course! as you could see the old veteran do inside this video. How funny.
I hate when people try so hard to discourage others from becoming a truck driver but what are they a truck driver. If trucking is so bad why the hell are you in it. I recommened trucking to anybody. Before I became a trucker I had a lot of white truckers tell me not to do it. I had a had a few tell me it would be the best choice of my life. Just about every non-white I ask about trucking always told me to do it. This is just my experience. Look in the papers the always hiring for truckers
now a days you can lease purchase a new truck w/ a major carrier , BUT " they charge more payments , and have more rules , and ya never quite get enough miles to make a profit after the payments made ...I've always been a company driver Since 1980 when I started OTR , was going to buy one in 1987 from schaffer ,, but De Regulation snafued that ,,, 3,500 a month lease ...and wouldnt reNegotiate it to 1,000 $ an affordable payment ...then screw scaffer in nebraska any way ....so after 35 yrs a company driver Not sure I'd do the O/O @ 59 yrs old now ..... getting a divorce , son is 18 now ,so I'm going back to driving 11 western ......I did 46 states for 35 yrs ... even 28 would be ok ....
Subsidized training... Yea, you can use a company program and pay for it with a driving contract, use a county workforce program (if you're unemployed), or use a student loan of some sort. Most importantly is to have a business model. Include EVERYTHING in the cash flow projection. Remember that your most important asset is experience.
If you're still interested and undecided, I recommend Prime Inc (www.primeinc.com/potential-drivers) as your starting company. They have primary training and you won't be in the poor house while earning your CDL. Plus, you will be well-prepared if/when you decide to leave them after you gain a year or two experience.
There are a lot of companies run there own trucking school. Remember you may be away from home up to 3 to 5 months each is different. Companies like Knight, C.R England, Swift, I want you to remember this you must be aggressive in these schools. Don't wait ask. Get hooked up with the fast movers and stay away from slackers. After you get your CDL you will be put with a trainer. This is where I worn you do NOT put up with bull shit! KNIGHT seems to be a good company look them up. One more this stay away from drugs and alcohol. That will get you kicked out so fast. Be a professional and expect the same. Good luck.
