  • In this video I discuss the Bach K valve "Balanced Valve rotor mechanism", and it's use on a Bach 50K3 bass trombone.
Personally, I rate these valves lowest out of all trombone valves I've had the opportunity to experience.

The K valve, when properly adjusted, is more open than the older B valve. It is also notorious for going OUT of adjustment frequently, and with little provocation. That drives the resistance sky high, and sounds stuffy, so you have to constantly realign the stop plate and make sure the bumpers aren't worn. Since Thayer, Infinity, Hagman and La Rosa valves are all faster to throw than a K, at least as open, and much less prone to misalignment, the K was a fairly short lived experiment. However, if you are willing to put up with the maintenance, it blows pretty freely. (FWIW, I've played a 42KD for the last 20 years.)

I bought a used 42K simply for curiosity's sake. My biggest gripe with the valve is how much effort it takes to actuate it. The lever throw is longer and heavier than any other valve I've tried. The "Coke can" digging into the neck is a bit annoying as well.
In principle, it seems to work the same way as a Hagmann valve, but obviously the latter's execution was far superior.

I don't believe that I've ever played a good Bach bass trombone. I played a few in high school before I got my current horn, and all I remember about the things were shoddy, wobbly valve linkages and super high resistance. I was between a 50T3 and something by Getzen when I was looking for a horn and I'm really glad I ended up getting my second hand Shires instead of either of those horns.

Greetings, I once had the tenor variant, the 42K on special order, with a detachable bell option but then changed it to the 42T, with the Thayer valve when it was begun to be offered from the factory. The "K" nomenclature was the last name of the engineer who developed it at Vincent Bach. Thanks for the info on the Balanced Valve, there isn't much widely available on this.

The K was most definitely a failed experiment, which is probably why you cannot find nearly anything on it when searching. Thanks for posting this video. It's a good resource to those who are searching to learn about different valves over the years!

I have a 42k with a detachable bell and a duel bore slide. I absolutely love the way it plays especially the evenness of sound from top to bottom. The only issue I have is with the action of the trigger....it is not as responsive as I would like.

    Very correct and helpful info.
    Thumbs up 👍👍
As a professional basstrombonist and from my personal experience I can say, that BACH valves are quite famous, but unfortunately in a very, very bad way👎
Of course I am talking in general and ,,you" always can find some exceptions.
From 2017 I am playing with
    Courtois/Hagmann -
Made in Germany and till that moment for me personally this is the best horn that I ever played.
Very expensive, but this is a basstrombone from another dimension.
