It sounds like a missed opportunity that they reset your ship. They could have included new upgrades in NG+ cycles to make you want to expand and expand and eventually end up with a Borg Cube or a Space Hulk or whatnot and swallow the universe in one epic NG+++++++++++ quest.

Kind sad that you cannot go your own way in Starfield, so many npcs that just cannot be killed, even when they warn you or tell a plot still unkillable feels off. The Outer Worlds handled this soo much better, both story but also options. Still smaller scope, but yeah i rather have quality over quantity. Regarding the spaceflight you should test Starwars squadron kinda the same type of combat but way more immersive and fast.

My main worry with loading screens is just Bugthesda's history where in the old games had terrible safe file system and the longer you played the slower your game ran eventually loading to 2min loading screens which made you think the game crashed.
And my main issue is that they highlight the loading screens all the time. Meanwhile other games like NMS and E:D have in some ways just as many loading screens but ppl dont make a real stinker out of it because they hide them by keeping you in to your prefered POV.

ED and NMS did loading in a way that everything looked and felt seamless. There is a huge difference between staring at a black screen and staring from your ship to space as you warp thru the universe. And yes, loading screens are the highlights since you cant even leave a fucking shop without a loading screen. There is absolutely no reason for them to put loading screens on a planet its not acceptable in 2023.

Almost 200 hours into the game and loving it, but it's definitely not perfect and I can understand why it can be very divisive. Regarding NG+, I really wish they would allow us to remake our character because I want to continue playing in NG+, but I also want try out different backgrounds and traits. I don't mind losing my money, items, and ships in NG+. What does bother me however is losing my outposts because those tend to take the most amount of time to construct.

“Reaching” pushing the envelope is always great innovation is what is needed in gaming and Bethesda has the balls to do it and of course there is going to be risk to when you’re breaking past that wall but it presents new information new opportunities also is allows and pushes other developers to be more creative as well so over all great for gamers.

Starfield is one the most formulaic and safe games ever made. It doesn’t push any boundaries at all. What are you talking about?

  • @Kaethena
    @Kaethena Рік тому +1

I kind of disagree when you talk about ambition outstripping technical capability. It's the sole reason Skyrim has been going as long as it has. Bethesda don't make single player games. They make canvasses for modders to paint on. This game will still be going in 15 years time because they provided the framework to let that happen. Long after dozens of games have been and gone. You really can't judge these games based on a hundred hours then onto the next one.
The thing you have to understand with the main quest in Starfield is that it's somewhat metagame. Bethesda have taken the whole new game+ idea and encompassed it into the whole premise of the game. To say that it's not as good as the faction quests is kind of missing the point. It's not supposed to be. And they explain why it's not supposed to be in the lore of this game. It's kind of one of the core principles of the game. You have to not think like a gamer to "get it". What they did was very clever and playing on the motivations of us as people. When you actually stop and think about it, it makes sense. They give you a choice. The same choice they give within the lore of the game. And they explain the choice for and against it in lore terms. It isn't just "Must get to NG+!!" That's utterly missing the point.
They don't force you to deal with some cataclysmic, world ending event with you being the Chosen One. The main quest is all about how you, the player, views personal power. And what that means to you as opposed to your place in the grand scheme of things. What you value most. That's literally all NG+ is. A choice you make on what you value most. How much attachment you have to material things vs how much you value your own personal power and knowledge. They give you a choice to be part of something, or be on your own crusade for power. You have to choose. You can't have your cake and eat it. And I think that's actually very profound. Just take your gamer hat off for a while and it will make much more sense. :) It's a somewhat veiled commentary on how people play games, and the choices we make. You could happily never do NG+ and never be the worse for it. But we all know gamers.

I spent a lot of early game reloading space battles until I got better at it, so there's a learning curve but it's very satisfyingly to figure out. There's a quest where NPC's asked if I needed backup for a space battle. No, I do not need backup. I will take on all the ships myself. It's so fun.

Now that the game is in players hands it’s rated a 3.75/5, so a 7.5 out of 10 on Xbox’s own storefront, so most players are feeling about the same. Not sure what it is but I swear I see your comments everywhere, thought I'd check out your channel. I agree the ship building is hands down the best part of this game in my opinion, I could do with DLC that adds more ship parts. I also wish you could sacrifice one thing on your your ship to add more of another, basically being able to go over the cap if you maybe only run one weapon system instead of 3. Stuff like that would add more depth and balance to the ship building but it's just a little nitpick. As for the faction quest, they are decent, my favorite one was the pirates and the UC vanguard because you get my favorite armor set. I found it strange that it never affects anything else, not even for flavor's sake. You can be all the factions and it just doesn't matter, on occasions if you are in new Atlantis random npcs will acknowledge you are a vanguard but that's pretty much it. By the time I got to do the UC vanguard quest line, I was already a ranger. There's this quest where you need to talk to someone from the freestar embassy and I thought I could use my status as a ranger to maybe sway them, but it just was never brought up. Everything in the game is just disconnected, and in many ways it's somewhat of a downgrade from previous Bethesda games. And that's my biggest gripe, they had more time and more budget then their previous title and this is the best they can do? It's like Bethesda is so set on releasing a really samey empierce but also being super safe, they are so afraid of letting players fail. Would have been neat if your actions had consequence but they don't, you destroy the UC sysdef and the UC doesn't even care. It's just so odd, as an rpg it's pretty lite and as a space explorer it's worse, but because it's on game pass it's easy to recommend. I think overall, I agree with your review. The main benefit to Bethesda games, is that even if you aren't a huge fan eventually there will be so many mods that the game will be night and day

Honestly, "overall okay" is exactly my feeling about this whole game.
Everything is so frustratingly below par for what should be a modern game. You can argue all you want about about nvme drives having to be standard, but when the issue with playing this game on other types of hardrives is abundant studdering, not texture issues, that's an optimization problem. I can run Cyberpunk on ultra settings with no more issues than occasional pop-in, and yet Starfield freezes constantly, and they're on the same drive. That's Starfield's issue, not anything in my PC.
The ship builder is fun, I liked it a lot but it has limitations that I don't agree with, I think 40m is not a big enough limit, especially when we aren't even allowed to rotate habs, it's just lego bricks with hardly any way to make it look good and be functional at the same time. Flying ships dosent even really mean anything more than how fast it rotates in whatever space box you're loaded into. Theres no aerodynamics because you never personally fly your ship in-atmosphere. There is no bullet collision for where your guns are placed. They'll just shoot through whatever blocks them, so line of sight means nothing more than having auto aim line up your shots for you.
And that little rant is only a fraction of my issues with my favorite aspect of the game. Everything else is very lackluster, shallow and means very little in terms of enjoyment and excitement. It's actually a fairly boring game overall, especially when you spend 15-20 seconds in a load screen every five minutes no matter what youre doing, and thats IF the game isn't also constantly freezing, that's just the way it was designed, loading into one box after another, honestly felt more like I was stuck in The Cube.
The ship going away in new game plus dosent even make fucking sense either, you literally use your ship to initiate the process of going into ng+. And once you get to the place where it happens, your ship just vanishes into nowhere. Just stupid. So many stupid design choices and limitations.
If you want my advice, if you are wondering whether to buy Starfield, dont. Wait for mods or dlc, wait for a sale, whatever you want, but unless you want to be a goody two shoes, pretending to explore space that's already been settled, doing so one loading screen at a time, on rails that Bethesda has placed for you, then look for better space games. Play X4 Foundations, play Elite Dangerous, play No Mans Sky if you like the arcade feel of space combat. Play the Mass Effect series (before Andromeda) hell, if you have a decent pc, you can screw around in Star Citizen for like $40 I think. This is a painfully mid-tier rpg, space game and any other kind of game it's trying to be. There are much better games for whatever you're looking for already out there.

I do believe that building a ship builder on your base gives you access to most ship parts and not some exclusive parts from certain factions but you still have to buy everything every playthrough soooo..... that was my worst feeling of starting ng+. Why build a base, why build a very good ship you can call home? Modders have work to do lol

That being said I’m going to take my time still with my first play through(40 hours in) but I’m not really going to bother with base building until I get to new game + 8. I want that to be my last play through because I think that armor looks the best.

If you build a ship landing pad as a part of an outpost you gain access to all of the non-unique ship parts if you make a ship in that outpost. But yeah, it would be cool if Bethesda let you save a template of your ship, so you could construct the ship you like in ng+ without wasting time. Overall, I liked the game, but it's not worth 70 bucks. Maybe 50. It's really the best Bethesda game in terms of different features and systems, but I think they fucked up the exploration, which was the best part of the other Howard titles.

I played it for 76 hours and finished the main quest and the game would’ve been 9.5/10 if it weren’t for the loading screens, space exploration and the poor performance on pc. I give it a 8.5/10. Such a good game.

The space-setting and shooting is mainly why this isnt for me. I am still interested how it turned out. I loved Oblivion (it blew my mind), and skyrim was pretty good once modded (still didnt like the combat).
It still seems like the same old bethesda game. Yanky npc's+bugs, below mediocre combat, terrible ui, but a great immersive world with good faction quests (main reasons i liked the games). Thats dissapointing considering oblivion was about 20 years ago... About none evolution at all? i was at least expecting to be able to just go anywhere and find interesting stuff, but Ruri stated that is not what this game is at all.. Would have made sense to add that to the bethesda experience/fomula.

I played Elite Dangerous and now mostly Star Citizen with HOTAS and my opinion as a veteran of those two games is that Starfield is much worse. There are no complex maneuvers. At least I have the feeling that everything is a semi-arcade. Implementation of thrusters is OK, but again nothing special.
At the moment, I'm about a hundred hours into the game, my friend tells me that I'm not even halfway through the main story :-) I stop everywhere, talk to a bunch of NPCs, and enjoy exploring the planets for more than an hour. I read all the messages on the terminals, I research the lore of the game. I knew this was basically Fallout 4 in space, but unlike you, I love the Fallout series and as far as space is concerned, we are the same.
As one of the biggest problems of this game, I would point out that the main problem is that the game was made with the Xbox console as a basis. To me, this game seems like a semi-OK PC port. If this game was made with PC as a basis, I think that many of the problems that are bothering us now would not exist.
Bethesda has not learned the lessons of the past and is repeating the same mistakes.
Todd tells us to buy better hardware, and his game doesn't even have basic features like FOV or contrast slider. Does anyone remember which of Tod's games had the same problems? It starts with the letter F and ends with the number 6. Do you remember how long we asked and waited for some basic things to be added to the game?
I agree with the faction missions. I have enjoyed. Even the most common pop up missions knew how to surprise me. Main story.... 6 out of 10.
All in all, an OK game with a lot of content, especially for those of us who like to explore and we used to drive around one planet in Elite for 5-6 hours. Is the game over hyped? It is. Is it GOTY material? A big NO!
All in all, as with previous Bethesda games, they will collect money and others (moding community) will fix their game. Not a bad tactic Todd :-)

I guess it's possible that I was lucky on every game I played and for whatever reason the hardware I happened too put together was the best optimization for every game I chose to play.
Or.... some reviewers suffer from the fallacy of focusing on the few errors. I recall people in places I worked complaining about some vendors we dealt with were the absolute worst. But when I investigated it was a couple of issues, and they were far from the most common with issues. But the few issues really bothered the co worker so that's all they could think about.
Perhaps here the reviewers are focusing on issues so that a half dozen glitches in 100 hours seems like 10%. And yes the usually bethesda issues are there. I get NPC's wandering into conversations. Last night I fell through the floor of my ship and kept getting rubber banded back inside. First time something like that had happened. I'm at 94 hours, and while I haven't been keeping track, I would estimate these errors happening closer to 1% of the time, probably less.
