    Charlie Lewis is the man. I hope he starts making razors again. After I bought 2 I went on a buying freeze until he comes back. Great to see you back at work Charlie. Hope to see some finished products soon.

    The nail test is a common test but it is better on a plastic marker/pen, with the marker angled you can also see if the blade slide off and it is safer.
    Great channel, really nice razors👍

    I really like this video! :) That demonstration of the classic rolling X stroke was very well done. The addition of the music was the finishing touch. Well done. :)

    you cut your nail???????? creepy, look the dislikes...

    • @lewisrazors
      @lewisrazors  7 років тому +6

      I am not cutting the nail, I am checking the progress on the edge sharpening. It barely leaves a scratch, If the blade is still blunt on the edge, the blade slides smoothly across the nail. If the edge has come
      together and starting to get sharp the blade will drag a little on the nail. There is no pressure involved just the weight of the blade.

    Whats the purpose of that test?

    • @lewisrazors
      @lewisrazors  5 років тому

      You can feel the condition of the edge by the way it drags across your thumbnail. If the both bevels meet and come to a point it drags, if there is still a flat or rounded part on the edge it slides easily. It is a quick and dirty test to make sure the bevels are coming to a point before moving on to finer stones.

    Glad to see a video from you again! It's great to see you are still out there. This video was very soothing and mesmerizing...up until the thumbnail test, which gave me the heebie jeebies to see. I've only ever done sharpness tests by scraping the blade at 90°and perpendicular to the nail so it scrapes a very thin shaving off. I've never seen a test like the one you did by sliding the blade along the nail. Even with just the weight of the blade alone it would creep me out to try. However, I really appreciate your videos and am glad to see another one from you.

    • @lewisrazors
      @lewisrazors  7 років тому

      I hear you, it kind of gives me the heebie jeebies also, the thumbnail test is a great indicator in the first stage of honing. I made two versions of the video, one with the thumbnail test, one without. I decided to leave the thumbnail bit in there because it elicited a gut level response.

    Perfect depiction of the water wave being pushed along the length of the blade Charlie!

    • @lewisrazors
      @lewisrazors  7 років тому

      Thanks Ron, I put a lot of liquid on the hone so the wave would show up.

    nice video. beautiful blade. but that thumbnail test was disturbing. my seven year old son was watching with me and started freaking out. I had no idea what the thumbnail test was before I watched the video. I know now though. and thanks for showing you technique.

      and I just read your reply to someone creeped out by the thumbnail test. I understand now.

    • @lewisrazors
      @lewisrazors  7 років тому +1

      I agree, it does look a bit creepy, that is part of the reason I left the thumbnail test in the video. A little shock value for educational reasons can't be all bad. :)

  • @mastercraftsman8199
    @mastercraftsman8199 7 років тому

    oh, and do you think it is a good idea to hone on metal with compound or should the blade user just use a stone?

    • @lewisrazors
      @lewisrazors  7 років тому +2

      On a finished razor I would use finer stones. this blade is still in the grinding process, I am using the coarse diamond hone to put the first edge on the blade and see where I have more grinding to do.

    Delighted your posting again thank you for sharing on one of your blades what stones and grits do you use ?

    • @lewisrazors
      @lewisrazors  7 років тому +2

      I use a hodge podge of stones. DMT diamond for the coarse work, 1k 4k 8k and 12k waterstones Norton and Naniwa, and a natural form the Nakayama mine. Sometimes some .5 diamond on hard felt, or some chrome ox.
