Honing A Smiling Straight Razor Blade
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 бер 2012
- A close up view of how the razor moves while doing a rolling x-stroke to hone a smiling straight razor. You can see how the blade moves as it travel down the hone to make all of the curved edge come into contact with the hone.

Best rolling x demonstration around. I wish there were more honing vids like this. No nonsense or voodoo!
Best demonstration of the Rolling X on the net. Well done sir!
drmatt357 I appreciate your comment. I worked for a while trying to get the camera angles that showed the stokes.
Just came across this old video. Best angle and description I’ve seen for honing motion and approach for smiling blades. Excellent!
Another relaxing video I love theses.
Thank you, I am glad you like it
Seen many video but this the one showing right way to hone a smiley razor ! 👍💪
Very helpful and great camera angle! The water really shows what to look for, as I use these same Nortons
Thank you for the feedback on the video
@CliffStamp I move the blade like that because, I can make the most consistent smooth strokes that way. It is what works for me.
Best video I've seen on the rolling stroke so far! I get it now lol
@ArtistBlade1972 Yes, that is one of my blades. It is a wrought iron and 1095 san mai.
@ArtistBlade1972 Cool, I really like the look of slaggy wrought iron.
@mac63126 I have electrical tape on the spine at first so I so not put undo wear on the spin when setting the edge for the first time.
I like a dmt 325 grit for for big repairs. I have not seen them in a big box store. I go from the dmt 235 to the 1000 grit norton.
Excellent, thank you for posting.
Interesting that there is a decidedly different school of thought for honing a smiling straight, but stropping is treated just the same.
Great job man.
@a1batmang In this case I used tape setting the bevel then took it off. Sometimes I will use one layer of tape for the whole process.
@lewisrazors Thanks. I missed that it looks like the spine is fairly thick, especially on the one side.
Nicely done Charlie. It's very helpful to see the rolling X stroke, especially being able to see the movement of the blade from heel to toe. I assume that you use the tape for the bevel setting on the 1K and then remove it for the 4K on up?
Very helpful vid, thanks.
@dannyjw123 I have several videos of me shaving with razors that are honed the same way. Shaving is the test I use for sharpness. I tested this razor it shaves well, I did not video tape me testing it though.
Smiling blades are nice to shave with. They are also more fun to hone. It is a preference thing some people like them, some not so much.
@dannyjw123 The Norton and Naniwa hones are affordable as far as water stones go. They are not exotic hones.
Hey nice to meet you
@evcrawfish Your welcome
Great video! Thank you!
You are welcome
@lewisrazors Sounds nice Charlie. I have some 300 year old wrought but I've never used it in a san mai. I may pop my cherry soon :)
Nortons not cutting it
I have a couple razors that have lots of chips along the blade, or have an uneven blade (warped, not smiling). My norton 220 and 1k don't seem to be evening things out. Is there a different type of stone that would work better? I think some have mentioned a DMT diamond stone. Can you get those at Lowe's or Home Depot? What grit is good? Or should I just stick with the norton?
I am new to the world of straight razors. Please explain why and what is the purpose of the smiling razor?
Thanks
What are you using on the spine? I'm assuming that the purpose is to keep a consistent bevel?
I've just gotten in to hinting and have been using the "40 circles" developed by Lynn Abrams. I'm not sure that would work with a smiling blade. For setting the bevel, how many round trips did you make on the 1000 stone and then the 4000 stone? Very nice video. Thank you for all of the information.
There is no set number of strokes on the 1k or the 4k, this was a hard concept for me to learn. I will hone maybe 10 or 20 strokes then feel the edge with the pad of my thumb, when it feels right I will move on to the next grit. I also pay attention to how the blade feels on the hone and how the water is acting in front of the blade as it goes down the hone. I do not have a good answer with a number to tell you, I rely on my thumb and eyes to tell me when to change.I have learned a lot of my honing skills from Lynn and Randy Tuttle. It took me a long while to to get the feel for honing. Both Lynn and Gssixgun have great videos on honing I would reccomend watching them.
Very good. Your answer makes perfect sense. Thank you.
am i to understand if i were to buy one of these razors i would need four different stones just to sharpen it?
One stone would work for maintenance of the blade, you need to start at lower grits when you sharpen for the first time or it gets really dull.
Is that one of your razors Charlie?
Why are you rocking the blade instead of simply rotating it on the stone?
What was the purpose of using the tape then removing it?
It was cosmetic, I did not want the hone to rub and make a shiny area on the back of the razor. It would work either way with or without the tape.
I'll ask the question a different way: removing the tape, you are effectively changing the angle at which you are sharpening the razor. That seems counter-productive. I get not wanting hone wear on the spine, but why take it off as you go up with hones?
@@kalossimitar I use the tape for packages that is thinner than the electrical tape about 0.041 mm VS 0.145 mm. On coarse stone I have to replace it more frequently but it allows me to spare about 1° of bevel angle.
hello!!what kinda of a stone are you using?
+Gokhan KUCUKEL Norton 1k, 4K, and 8k, Naniwa 12K
What is the difference between a smiling razor and a sway back razor?
None really, two names for the same thing.
Lewis Razors Thanks man! By the way, your video is the best demonstration I've seen on the rolling-X stroke!
What size stones do you use ?
1k - 4k - 8k - 12k water stones the sometimes a finishing stone.
Hey Lewis why don't you sell me a smiling straight razor???? like the one in the video???
