I’m a marine biologist with a decade of experience working with marine mammals. Today, we’re going to debunk some of this disinformation and hopefully shed some light on what is really behind the uptick in endangered whale deaths along East Coast.
Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, an unusual mortality event is defined as "a stranding that is unexpected; involves a significant die-off of any marine mammal population; and demands immediate response."
According to the NOAA, “Understanding and investigating unusual mortality events is crucial because they can be indicators of ocean health and they can give insight into larger environmental issues which may also have implications for human health”
The increase in whale deaths has led to a debate between environmental groups over the role of offshore wind development which opponents argue poses a risk to marine life. Experts don't know what's behind the years-long trend of whale deaths. But there's no evidence connecting the deaths to offshore wind development, which is less noisy than fossil fuel exploration.

I had a 40 gallon sears bladder type metal water tank for a well pump I was using with the bladder taken out to hold used veggie oil for a house heater and it could would start to make a high pitched resonating noised (kinda loud) when cars approached my house a block and a half away. At a block away I could start to hear the car it's self. This same kind of resonating oil bladder is found in many whale heads. Devoting 1/3 of your head to hear sounds means that sounds are very important to life it's self. A wind mill may actually make a high pitched sound all the time, and in a off shore wind farm, the entire area may be a noise producing disorienting death trap for whales. Has anybody with a brain that works even looked into that kind of stuff ? What under water sounds do wind farms produce ? Ultrasonic is an underwater/liquid type thing. Whales talk great distances since the density of water carries sound better/faster than compressible air. Solids transfer sounds very well like a string between to cans. I can see you, can you hear me? Magnetism is required to produce electricity & many animals use the earths magnetic field for directional travel. Does a wind farm disturb a compass ? or an animal ? Many electrical devices are grounded to the water table, are off shore wind mills grounded to the water table also creating an electrical problem for life in the area? Some fish or sharks use the slight electrical signal produced by the muscles of other animals to detect those animals. So some under water creatures are very sensitive to electricity. Humans are actually idiots to the point that they don't understand that they don't understand, so they don't even bother to try to understand what they are doing and the impact of their actions before they do the action. Like build a huge wind farm. Well, there are some thoughts to ponder anyway...

@@ArkadiusMaximilianus There are CURRENTLY only SEVEN turbines off the entire east coast! You saw a video of stock footage from another country and think that that is somehow reality? FFS! Not only are there ONLY SEVEN turbines, but the whale deaths have already been more than 50% accounted for in THAT SAME PERIOD! Collisions with large ships, entanglement in fishing nets. NOTHING at all to do with turbines, of which there are only SEVEN!

Offshore wind power plants have increased vessel activity as well, so it's another part of the impact on the area along with acoustic impact even ahead of the developments as they survey the ocean floor with sound, dig trenches into the ocean floor to lay cables through the seabed, electromagnetic currents, breakdown of the epoxy coating on turbines, death of sea birds esp migratory and predatory eg sea eagles....

Have you considered the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater estuaries (3.4.5.) and illegal dumping of wastewater by municipalities in to tidal areas and these estuaries (6.7.) that the current takes out to sea. Not only is SARS-CoV-2 survivability in sea water (1.), SARS-CoV-2 has been recently proven to have a genetic link to psychological symptoms and central nervous system (CNS) infection. (2.) Which have been observed in the report to cause many psychological issues when it attacks the nerve cells. (2.) Is it possible this is being expressed in marine mammals exposed to these infected warm sewage wastewater as it enters currents, keeping the temperature of the salt water in the tidal current optimal for transmission to these marine mammals? Just an idea and as well, it feels like being an alarmists isn't the right corse of action but the die off is unusual. It should be as easy as a PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 in the blood sample, nasal epithelial cell sample, cerebral spinal fluid sample. This should confirm or deny if SARS-CoV-2 is in fact causing the marine mammals to have severe psychological conditions, as it is currently confirmed to be observed in humans(2.). I look forward to hearing back from you possibly in a video or on this comment thread. Again, thank you so much for your valuable time and consideration reading this reply. 😁🐋🐳🐬🦭🦅🐟🦈

Actually ROBERT... Wind turbines that are land-based (which is what you're addressing, rather than the ocean wind farms she's addressing), now watch out electronically 24/7 for approaching protected migratory species that instinctively use the same wind corridors to migrate as where the turbine farms logically are located... and the turbines where approaching species are spotted, far off in the distance, are selectively turned off in anticipation, until the animals have safely passed through. Before that, humans stood watch in towers and performed the same tasks, but the new automated system is even more specific and accurate, can see their approach even earlier than the naked human eye, and never gets tired or sleepy. ;)
Looks like you might need to do a little more scientific reading, brush up on facts, your comment was as ill-informed as the ocean turbine alarmists who are anti-wind turbine but lack a foundation in actual scientific data. They're being led by their noses by oil, gas, and lobbied politicians. You can do better, as a concerned citizen. Start by paying attention to this entire video, which is only 8 minutes long and won't tax your attention span, wherein a real authority tells you what the real, proven, biggest culprits of whale beachings are. Trauma from ships, and entanglements. Then there's the ingestion of oir ubiquitous plastics, present from the bottom of the food chain and becoming more concentrated as it travels up the food chain. This isn't the place, isn't the time, to lecture about the rising temperatures and changing pH of the oceans, the bleaching of corals, the invasive proliferation of taxifolia, or how devastating rubbish and plastic ocean pollution already are. You might look into Sea Shepherd, Ocean Conservation Namibia, and Greenpeace, as basic resources for current info about our oceans' human-caused hazards. Become an educational ambassador! That's how you change people's minds. ;)
I'm a longtime wildlife rehabilitator, not just a sidewalk supervisor. She's right on target, and isn't paid by vested interests like oil and gas who would love for alternate sources of energy, oil's competition, to disappear. There are more protected species dying from window strikes, plastic pollution in the oceans and on land, and other major human activity too numerous to mention, than all the beached whales put together... every day.
If would be great if you could continue to be an activist, but chose a different tac, and the way one educates citizens is by presenting them with hard data. For example, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish by 2050. We've got one-tenth the fish than we used to have, due to human activities. Or that commercial fishing vessels are responsible for countless entanglements because they dump or lose so many lines at sea, people dump their rubbish into the sea at an unimaginable daily rate, as do recreational fishermen. Or use your energy to help stop the use of illegal gillnets which are designed to kill everything they catch, indiscriminately... and then kill and kill again after the bodies rot and free up the gillnets and longlines to kill again. Gillnets are so cruel that even the commercial fishing vessels won't use them... but others still illegally do. Or be an activist about the vertical lines used as part of traditional lobster fishing, which entangle balleen whale species. Illegal fishing ships that lie about their identities and locations, and fish in protected waters, use purse seine nets that closs up like drawstring purses, they not only catch the endangered subspecies of tuna they want, but catch and kill the whales as well, because they know tunas follow the whales. The law also finds hundreds of shark fins on board: these men cut off the fins of sharks and toss the sharks back into the ocean, unable to swim or breathe, and they drown a slow, agonizing death. Only a few of the illegal ships get busted. Or support activist efforts to stop the whale and dolphin yearly roundup and slaughter that still takes place yearly by Japanese ships under the guise of "scientific research:" Kidnapping still-nursing babies and selling them to circuses, selling their flesh for food, neither are "scientific."' Russians and Chinese ships are also responsible for the slaughter of not just cetaceans, but a lot of other ocean species, some of which are endangered.
So as you can see, a little science will go a long way in sharpening facts so you can speak with some authority, instead of simply quoting misperceptions.
Reduce your use of plastics! Recycle all of it. Cut loops on single-use plastic bags, cut open the rings at the tops of ziploc bags, cut loops of discarded dental floss, cut every hole in sixpack rings. Find ways to stop using plastic. Companies may boast that their plastic containers are recyclable, but its greenwashing: almost all of it isn't recycled. Yet. Never discard fishing lines and hooks into our rivers, ponds or seas, take time to remove them, and pick up rubbish whenever you see some.
And one other thing you can do, the most important thing... is to stop eating fish and shellfish! It starts at your own doorstep, Robert. No alternate energy source is entirely safe, and they're all going to have to work together. But meanwhile... you can do these simple green things right now! Tell people. Become an educational ambassador. :)

Big wind is owned by big oil. In the area I’m from fishermen have known for decades that the fishing grounds here have oil pockets in the ocean floor. The oceanic wind farms must do seismic testing to anchor the turbines. This seismic testing is not only useful in anchoring turbines but it can also detect oil pockets, something to think about. Unfortunately on the downside seismic testing can rupture the ear drums of marine mammals damaging their sonar abilities causing them beach themselves. It’s sad that the universities endowments come from the same elite class that own big oil and big wind. With those endowments they sit on boards and are able to dictate what is taught to university students. That’s a fact most would like to ignore. I’m exercising my first amendment right

The data on the magnitude of the negative effects of large scale offshore wind developments is not yet in. And the vulnerability of the species eg Southern Right Whale is important. So the fact that it's localised in this coastal area while the UK is not reporting a similar phenomenon, is not evidence one way or another. .

Great quick video and fairly informative. Although, You say there are louder noises and this doesn't necessarily mean anything. The frequency of noise is obviously more critical. We don't have to be scientists to understand this. But, You do bring up a compelling argument when you compare the European wind farm comparison in numbers. I will take that info and research further to get some accuracy myself. Good enough information tho for the lame man trying to understand the real truth. Thanks!

the Ocean is just too polluted, toxic, crowded and hazardous. The ocean is one giant sewage pond now. Coastlines are overdeveloped and noise pollution is at an all time high. And the research… I remember healthy coral reef systems and Life in the remote Bahamas that are now entirely gone. Not all but the majority of the Coral Reefs I saw recently in the Caribbean in South America were completely gone. We’re well into the collapse. But this is old news. Most ocean waters should have a bluish tint and not sewage pond green tint. And pollution is only one factor. We humans got worse not better with all this over the years. Many heroes here but overall the USA was certainly no help. Just the truth. Time ran out 20 yrs ago. Even then we were in overtime. Human stewards: F - - / U.S: F - -

What the hoax actually is, is that we believe we can offset or, have any positive effect on the climate which is ridiculous, the inertia of climate change will continue even if we somehow managed to stop all greenhouse gas emissions. Sorry but wind turbines operate 24/7 and creates high decibal noises that disorient the whales and dolphins. These wind farms also spans across the huge area. Shipping and drilling noises are temporary and localized. Big difference.

    • @KPassionate
      @KPassionate  9 місяців тому +7

The sound generated by wind turbines do not disorient whales at all. Contrary to what some people think, toothed whales do not use echolocation for navigation. They use it to hunt. And, more importantly, baleen whales like humpback whales do not echolocate at all. While there is still a lot that is unknown about baleen whale migration, current studies show that they use a combination of sun orientation, topography of the ocean floor, water temperature, and chemical changes in the water to navigate long distances. Wind farms have zero effect on these things.

    • @KPassionate
      @KPassionate  9 місяців тому +3

I wasn't clear, and that is my fault. I should have said that the ratio is roughly the same. The numbers are a bit hard to calculate since each country measures them differently. The UK sees around 600 cetacean strandings every year. According to the NOAA, the US sees 7,000 but their numbers also include seals and sea lions which account for over half the strandings. If we eliminate the pinnipeds, that is still 600 cetacean strandings in the UK compared to at least 3,000 in the US. Alaska alone sees 80-100 cetacean strandings that we know of (a lot of the strandings in Alaska are unaccounted for due to the sheer size and remoteness of the state) and Alaska doesn't have any offshore wind farms.

See this is your problem. You are probably all in on clean and green energy. Right? High EMF fields is not good on any body. In order to move the electricity from each windmill so where are the lines? On the ocean floor? There was a reason why no one used to build houses within a certain distance from high tension power lines.
So with that said. High EMF effects on a human is paranoia, hallucinations, rashes and so on depending on the levels. Water amplifies the effects I would think.
So what has changed to cause this event? Wind mills.
OK. So why not halt it until we know for sure? Is a green agenda so important and urgent that you can't even consider the fact that High tension lines on the ocean floor may be killing these majestic mammals?
Do your own little experiment. Find some high tension power lines and camp under the for a week or two.
But. With the whales and now dolphins if it was pollution or too much of the evil carbon in the water or heat or whatever else, it would have been gradual not as many in a short time.
You supposedly are a marine biologist and for whatever reason not automatically assume it is not the Green Deal Windmills and try and save these animals. Do you really believe the corporation that erected them and owns them really gives two rats craps about them? You should. You are a scientist supposedly. But I forget education now is more or less political crap. Who knows? If you put in the work you may actually discover something about marine mammals that isn't in a book? But automatically instead of doing research you assume that it can't be the Green Energy because I will bet money you are all in on your own political views. Right? You are not even willing to consider the idea that Green may be killing these creatures.
So do your own research. Who knows? You may be famous or become a nonperson.

Unfortunately you demonstrated your lack of knowledge on wind turbines and the energy grid immediately. The preference and the design for modern off shore wind farms is to use high voltage direct current trunk lines back to the shore. Unlike AC this doesn't generate a changing field that can induce current. Not that standing near high voltage AC lines is a problem, we have tested this rigorously over decades. "But automatically instead of doing research", bit ironic considering you clearly haven't done your own research and instead made assumptions about energy infrastructure.
I have read several papers involving the impact on wind farms off the coast of Wales. Would you mind sharing published research you have read? Considering your supposition that wind advocates are all in with their political views, you must have a load of peer reviewed research to back up such strong views. I'd love if you'd share a few, not blog posts or videos of course, links to actual papers.

You say commercial ships use sonar as well. And you say whales being hit by ships is one of the big causes of death.
    Don't you see the connection?
A whale that is able to hear a ship for miles and miles is being hit by it? Why?
Probably because the sonar of that ship or of even multiple ships on a route is confusing these animals and they lose orientation. Then they try to escape the sound and surface, which is where they are hit by the ships.
Those 230 decibel can cause severe damage to organs, especially lungs and brains. May not be instant kill but the animals are being hurt severely and in for a long suffering.
And then why do people think Orcas attack smaller Yachts so frequently all of a sudden?
May be related to them using Sonar more frequently to find fishes for those who like to go fishing. Since it's been getting harder to find fish schools, these boats and tourist boats are using sonar as well.
I would not underestimate the impact sonar has, directly & indirectly.
Maybe wind farms don't cause the sonar noise, but there are more and more sources for that noise polution. Including science ships checking the ocean floors for wind farm construction.
And no, it's not enough to check for whales and other animals from a boat with magnifying glasses. Those sound waves are very powerful and reach 100s of kilometers. Also: You can't see underwater with a magnifying glass from a boat. Maybe a psychological aid, but you'd have to evacuate the area if you really wanted to protect wildlife. Which is impossible, I get it. Still, it would be time to look for alternative technologies that are less harmfull.

Sound waves are pressure waves. Which simply means they are the compression/expansion of the medium (air, water, steel, etc). Electromagnetic fields only affect charged particles. Electromagnetic fields have zero effect on sound waves in a neutral fluid such as water. Even IF they did... baleen whales do not use sound to navigate or echolocate.

Are you saying that all WAVES are the same? By this logic, Seahawk fans doing the WAVE at a football game are interfering with radio WAVES and that is why the sound WAVES are not working so good for whales in the Puget Sound. Who knew.

@@broadpete5779 technically RF can resonate with a dipole (say the wind turbine height is the wavelength) and will induce a vibration that would interfere with sound waves. But the amplitude is miniscule, a bird having a crap plopping on the ocean would sound like a fighter jet taking off in comparison. The person you are replying to was probably referencing 5G which everyone know uses magical waves passing through the aether that can control even Whales, there is no denying it.
If the trunk line to the substation on shore used AC then it would probably create a low level 60Hz hum. But from my understanding with UK wind farms they use high voltage DC lines.

Each and every whale death is investigated. The leading causes of death in whales are ship strikes and entanglements from vertical fishing lines. My position is that we should use evidence as the basis for our conclusions and currently there is no evidence that wind farms are to blame. In fact, this year there have been more whales that have washed up on the WEST coast of the US where there are no offshore wind farms.

They haven’t done any studies, so no one can say they are or are not the cause. There is no evidence because they have not looked into it. How many whales are in the uk compared to US? The number of whales in a matter of months is not all running into ships or fishing lines. More animals - they are endangered. There should be an ecological report on the wind farms as they would with anything else. We also need to do more about the fishing lines.

Put down your "critical thinking". Compare SEVEN turbines with 2652! Realise that they have already found why the majority of these deaths occur. It IS NOT a mystery. Collisions with ships and fishing net entanglement. 3000 whale deaths caused by SEVEN turbines? Are you for real?

Saying "lies" seriously undercuts your credibility. As does citing that only 8 whales died in 2023, using a study from February of that year. According to this documentary (ua-cam.com/video/km78wMHt9d8/v-deo.html) 40 died in the first six months of the year and there's been a massive uptick since 2016. Considering how threatened the North Atlantic Right Whale is and how little this has actually been studied it is astounding that a marine biologist wouldn't emphasize more of the precautionary principle here instead of saying, "Don't worry about it, it's a conspiracy!".
