There needs to be a class that's taught every year throughout grade school "Domestic and Wild Animals: The Dos and the Don'ts". People will always be stupid, but maybe this would help them not hurt themselves and others.
As somebody I knew 30 years ago said, "This is a park. Up in the mountains. It not Disneyland. This not Disneyland. You treat it like it's Disneyland, you die." And just as The Rockies ain't Disneyland, neither are the Oceans.
I knew you would cover this. Thanks for being so fast with it. I hope people will smarten up and give her a very wide place to be the wild animal she is!
Most important thing is talk to the animal if it comes aboard. A predator that's hunting will be silent. A predator that's not hunting will make noise. On my last river trip on my paddleboard, I had a river otter board me. I talked to him a bit as he checked me out, spotted a bass in the water, and then he jumped in after it. Only downside of the interaction is the possibility that he learned paddleboards make good hunting platforms.
Wow! What is with some people! They keep doing foolish things with the wild animals. National parks, State Parks, Oceans, people keep encroaching. Crazy!!!!! Thanks KP! Your finger comment also had me laughing!!!!!
@@KPassionate Oh my goodness, I made it into one of your videos! Twice!! Hi, KP! I saw an article in USA Today about a river otter attack, but they used a photo of a sea otter mom and pup as the story illustration. I reached out and got it straight fast! Sea otters don’t need any more bad press! I’m glad this orphan is being taken care of so that she won’t harm anyone (or their surf boards).
Thank you! I always learn so much from your videos. The bite strength of a bear! Closest relative is the wolverine! Wow. While I don't speak for everyone, I too tend to see only how cute wild animals are. I don't ever put myself into a situation like going to a zoo, or anywhere else where I might come into close proximity of a beautiful wild animal. I don't trust myself, frankly, to refrain from jumping the fence and hugging that tiger! I'm kidding, of course, but only a little. I've read up on various sanctuaries, like for wolves, for example. And I know the difference between a wild animal and one who has been domesticated. And I know I can't even kiss my kitty cat's belly, without the risk of being seriously clawed. I hope this pretty otter finds a good, safe home.

It’s funny how people have all these semi-negative stereotypes about OTHER mustelids, but not sea otters. People are all about them being so cute, and that’s great, it helps spread public awareness. But… all we need to do is look a little further, at their cousins, and we’ll get an idea of their mentality and behaviors! River otters. Wolverines. Badgers. Martens. Minks. Ferrets & polecats. Ermines & stoats. Tayras. Sables. Fishers. Ratels & grisons (old and new world honey badgers). What else?! The list goes on and on. But they all share some common traits-intelligence & hyperactive energy levels. These two things can be helpful for them, and have proven beneficial for their survival, but also make them highly unpredictable and dangerous… mostly for the unlucky prey animal (or person) on the receiving end! One man in Alaska was walking his lab retriever by a lake, fairly recently too, and out of nowhere, a family of American river otters saw them and instantly made an aggressive beeline to the dog. They felt threatened in that moment and fully overwhelmed the dog. I don’t think the dog was even being curious or aggressive towards them. In the end, the dog died of blood loss and the man’s hands were all cut-up from trying to stop them.
I know what you mean! I don’t think most people realize that a sea otter’s closest land relative is a wolverine 😂. But I will say I get lots of comments on my social media about how nasty sea otters are so at least some people are somewhat aware hahaha
The area of Santa Cruz coastline where 841 has been mostly seen swimming up to surfers in is called Steamer Lane. It's a famous surfboarding location with cliff sides and beaches. To be fair, surfers have been using that locale for decades, and surfing contests are often held there. Otters live in the kelp beds near the cliff areas, but local surfers and regulars are aware of them and don't go out of their way to get close. Both parties have coexisted in the same area for a long time without much issue. Unfortunately, because of the fame (or notoriety) of otter 841 in the news and social media, people are making assumptions that surfers being in the same area with otters are just as bad as the people actually getting too close to the otters and harassing them, which is not the case.
Yes I agree the media may make it worse by bringing more attention to her! And..I really don’t care how long the surfers have been surfing and partying there ..ocean belongs to the animals ❤
@@OpalineAndTheBean And the land also belongs to the animals too, but where will you live if that's the case? Again, my point is the local surfers are being blamed unfairly for supposedly 'harassing' the sea otters that live there, which is not true.
How is she an actual danger to public safety? Can a sea otter cause serious harm? I'm with you - people should leave her alone so she can hopefully stay wild. If people approach her and she defends herself and her pup, why would she be penalized for that? Thank you for all of this info. I have adored sea otters my entire life. I should have pursued your career path, but math is my nemesis😂
Oh a sea otter can absolutely cause serious harm to a person. Someone could easily get their hand bitten off. Their teeth are designed to crush clam and crab shells so human bones are no problem. I’ve seen some pretty terrible bites.
@@KPassionate That makes sense, of course. I should have asked, do they ever attack people for no reason? I understand all animals can be aggressive if provoked.
@@dinap3515 people are getting too close to her and likely feeding her so it wouldn’t be for no reason. But yes, especially now that she has a pup she very well could be a danger to people who are getting too close.
