Another notable projection to consider is Goode homolosine. This one was quite popular in the 60's. It's equal area, and retrains good continent shapes by sacrificing the shapes of oceans, which most folks find less troublesome than misshapen continents.
I just looked this up, and, if a map projection could ever be associated with a historical era, it screams 60's! I immediately visualized it in a Pan Am airlines brochure or lit up on the wall of a Bond villain's lair.
4:10 I think a right answer is to have at least two maps with different projections in classrooms, so that the students are constantly reminded that no single projection onto a flat surface is "correct", and that they all have different priorities about which distortions they are willing to accept. (As well as whatever the given projections happen to be good at rendering).
well the amount of men's varies. last episode there were a bunch and this one there's none because, despite what mathematicians may lead you to believe, zero is a number
Before any smartass comes to argue it's Cyrillic, it's Russian because they cannot pronounce the "Th" in "this" so they replace it with "z". They also cannot say "Bluetooth", they say "Bluethus". Most other Cyrillic-alphabet countries can pronounce "th" - commonly as "d" (д).

2:57 a straight line on the map is not a straight line on the globe, but rather a curve that always keeps north at a constant angle. Which is not the optimal path, but an easy one to follow with a compass. That’s why planes’ paths do not look straight if you ever look at them
Jay says size matters. Mark says size doesn't matter, it's how you use it. They were arguing about maps, of course, not about the giant inflatable penis.
2:25 According to this logic, I think I know the answer. The sides of the map will be more squished, and the center will be a bit bigger. But if you think about it the two sides are actually really close to each other, because the flat map is 2× stretchier than a globe, so it likes to show everything at once. The globe has many different angles to look at.
Slight correction: A straight line on a Mercator map isn't a straight line on the earth, Mercator's advantage is that the angles are preserved at any given point. For example, two lines meeting at a 30 degree angle IRL would be at a 30 degree angle on Mercator. This only works at points though, if you draw a line on a globe and project it onto a Mercator it will be curved.
@@Jacob-yg7lz The same problem occurs in Mercator. The north and south poles are at infinity, so we just chop them off! Why can't we do that in stereographic projection?
@@Anonymous-df8it Because the map literally becomes way too big if you include anything at above/below a certain line of longitude. Seriously, look up stareoscopic projections, you won't see any that don't have entire continents cut in half.
@@Jacob-yg7lz You mean latitude. And, in the Mercator projection, you're not going to find one that doesn't have the poles chopped off (and everything above 85 degrees latitude, I think!)
