Saying the iron cross is the same as a swastika is way more of an insult than everything they claimed to be problematic in WWII games. It is still used as the symbol for the german military and badge of honor. As a german I take offense in that.

I had genuinely always thought that the “you didn’t ask for this” cartoon was just a meme. I had only seen it appear as a clip for a few seconds in other YT videos as a joke, and never knew where it originally came from. I had assumed the original creators (whoever they were) were just memeing as well. But to learn after all these years that it was the actual take of the the original creators, and not just a joke or parody, is bizarre and hilarious.

I'm watching this during the peak of the QuantumTV controversy and I love that Act man has become the hero we both need and deserve!
Personally, I feel like showing Nazis a normal people is more important than showing them as generic cartoonish villains. Things like the Nuremberg trials and other WWII documents/photos should serve as a grim reminder of the darkness that even the most regular people are capable of.
The fact that nazis were normal people doesn't normalize them; it's what makes them so horrifying. The fact that normal people could be convinced to commit genocide is a lot scarier than evil people doing evil things because they're evil.
That's why video games should have a single player campaign, to show how terrible war really is. EC killed me when they said nazis were forced into service. Truth is, most of them were like us, doing the job they were given in the military.

Dehumanizing the enemy like EC is encouraging (and has been the trend of media for decades) is thinking like a propagandist. Showing both sides in a human light is history. Dehumanizing the enemy is exactly what led to the holocaust and ww2 in the first place.
100% this, dehumanizing groups as just being pure evil is one of the worst things you can do. Several studies have shown the awful things that a normal person is capable of doing when put into bad situations. The best thing to do is to be cognizant of this and stay vigilant.
games shouldn't have to shy away from that stuff either. Guarentee you, these same people would be going bonkers if a video game, tv show or anything tried to humanize Nazis during WWII. Yet by trying to silence this type of thing, we are potentially missing out on new perspectives and empathy. (not for the nazi ideology of course.)
@@warbossgegguz679 I would say that patriotism played a large role as well. My family fought in the war on the axis side and from what I can see, they weren't evil, but rather doing there part and supporting the country they lived in. We do the same in the US, we just see it from a different side

And yea we all chose to play the WW2 game. We also have no difficulty telling apart reality and fiction. In Hearts of Iron I will gladly roleyplay as Germany, USSR or Japan invade countries and use the brutal opression occupation policy. If I actually become ruler of one of the countries as an all seeing eye I would do what I can to make the world a better place, which involced developing the economy and not declaring war on anyone who isnt threatning the rules based international order. If I bacame the ruler as a man, I would also have to focus on keeping my power and life, and would try to moderate the beliefs of the party whos leader Ive magically become, do all I can to prevet my country starting a war, if was is forced on me by my subordinates try to get my armies to be humane to prisoners and subjects, ect.
I used to watch that channel. They were actually really good before they got their new host. It was video game introspection from video game designers and they were pretty entertaining. Video games don't normalize anything except maybe heart disease and back conditions. There's a HUGE difference between debating the Jewish question and playing a game where you shoot people with an iron cross on your trench coat.

But politics and money are intrinsically linked. You have one and the other can surely be found close by. Video games do 'normalize' things. Straight after WW2, I don't think people would joke around with even the word "Nazi", nowadays you see memes and people using the word like any other everyday word. Taboo 'things' lose that gravity when you use it all the time in whatever way you want.
Take the word 'n#gga' for example. In the 1800's that was a derogatory word. Slavers used that word as a way to disrepectfully address them. Nowadays, we all use that word like it wasn't a serious word for oppression. Crap even I use to call my friends that until I realised how "normalized" we as a society have made it.
We honestly should not underestimate Video Games ability to inform and influence people.

Making fun of the bad is how a lot of people cope even about serious matters such as WWII. But that's most likely the exception. Your always going to have a couple of people who try to make a joke of things for shock value, make money or propaganda. I'd bet the majority of people would have had more reverence or fear of that word and name back then compared to now.
If you don't try to address or at least try to accommodate the crazies then things like terrorism,school shootings, murder and violence in general, racial abuse and racism,bullying etc will go on. That supposed 1% have the ability to affect the other 99%
All I'm really trying to say is that WE SHOULD NOT UNDERESTIMATE the effect games can have on people now and in the future. Especially as it is something we've never really tried to scientificaly study or quantify.
