Hey Mark, I'm a 15 year old girl, I love listening to your videos. I just wanted to thankyou for introducing this method to me. I have been practicing box breathing for a couple of weeks, and a few days ago I was caught in a wildfire near idyllwild, your breathing technique gave me the clarity of mind to think and act effectively during this emergency. Thankyou so much!
Wow this work like a bomb I feel it instantly my anxiety drop I'm here because of Tom bilyeu god bless his soul I've learnt so much from him major inspiration in my life and thank you Mark divine.
@@pulkitkohli1993sorry for late reply you need breath through the nose out by nose or out by the mouth whichever one feels most comfortable with you it's really works the more you practice you feel more present.
Wow indeed. I have suffered with crippling anxiety for years. I am definitely using this everyday. Can't believe I am just stumbling onto this after being in martial arts for over 20 years and been a die hard fan of the seals for the same amount of time.
I’m here because of Tom Bilyieu. I was watching his Anxiety video. Then stopped it to find Mark Devine box breathing. This really helped my anxiety this morning. Thank you!!! Now back to finishing Tom Bilyieu’s video! Liked and subscribed. 🤗
I've been a mouth breather my whole life due to a significantly deviated septum so this is fantastic for me to focus on. I believe poor breathing has held me back in athletics and I'm excited to get started improving it. I will listen to anything Divine or BBS has to say. Thx!
Thank you for adding another anti-anxiety technique to my 80 year old body and repertoire. Your method is saving my psychological life. God bless you Sam
So similar to what I learned in yoga. This breathing technique works beautifully. The practice for me will be remembering to apply this during high stress tactical situations….
I followed along with the box breathing in the video and that was suprisingly calming. Ive been super stressed out today and that really felt like a reset. This is an area of self-improvement that i have wanted to get into for a while and if it wasnt for the way Mark presents this information and continues to preech its benifits on his podcast it would still be just an idea for me. Thanks Mark, really eye-openning video.
Thank you for your contribution to humanity ♡ This is a great way to get guys that are too macho to meditate or do any of that "sissy" stuff. I just tell them the Navy Seals do it and BOOM they are all over it! Calling it Tactical breathing makes it more "macho" and easier for them to accept too. I also use military cadence or call and response technique for affirmations that are easy and fun to do.
I've watched the video daily for almost a month from the beginning after the intro, and I get so high before the tactical breathing even begins (1-in-2-out). Tingling in my fingertips and very light feeling. Sometimes i think my head will explore due the high -feeling. I'm little bit doubting is it good or bad thing that happens. edit: and Thanks Mark for visiting Tony Robbins event year-or-two ago. I'm grateful and glad I found you.
thank you for your efforts. Excellent for the general public. I am a 25 year breathing and vocal professional. I would suggest you do not get so muscular with your breath and do not break it down into 3 parts. Good breathing is seamless. Have you ever considered teaching that good breath is HORIZONTAL in the body? It makes a huge positive impact on how a student uses their breath. One does not and should not PULL breath into the top part of the lungs. Use of the small space of the upper lungs will happen naturally if you are breathing to fill up the lower lungs fully. IF you add that breathing into the lower lungs through your lower back (as breathing is 3 dimensional) will also provide more assurance that the student is not just moving their belly muscle in and out and thus not breathing correctly. I wish you continued success. Thank you for your service in all that you do.
I've been meditating for a few years, but haven't practiced much with the breath beyond the basic in thru the nose for 6, pause, out thru the mouth for 8, pause. Really really enjoyed consciously focusing on the belly, diaphragm and chest, and love the box breathing! Excellent - thank you Mark, you're Divine!
This was awesome.. did this before 15.1 and felt great breathing during the WOD! also felt relax and energized on the way to the gym. Going to do this more often!
Mark looks tense if you project it on him as a western soldier trainer type but he actually really maintains a calm demeanor all the time. You can hear it in all his interviews. I tend to. Price when he gets a worked up comment from a guest I can hear him breath deeply during that dramatic part.
Respectfully, may I suggest another addition; a series of rebreaths on the in hold to top up and infuse the oxygen into the cells like a barometric chamber to make the body like a drum / balloon for many reasons. An octagon not a box. Trial it to get it sorted.
Hi, the app you recommend is left for dead. Have you found a substitute? The only other app I have found that specifically times box breathing only allows you to do one breath at a time-then you have to reset it!
Doin part 2 of my 20x challenge sore from the last 1 & lovin it! This was great learned it a long time ago but stopped doin it somewhere along the line felt grrreat! Feelin Good, Lookin Good Like Hollywood!!! ^5 :D 1 of 3 goals to start a twidder acct lol! So u will know I nailed 1 down 4 sure ;) Thank You For Everything You Do & Done Keep Breathin Brother HooYaH!!!
thanks helped me with my Health class, my assignment was... "Do a search to locate a site that provides information on one of the relaxation techniques described in your text-deep breathing, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and so on. Tell me what technique you learned about. How does it work?"
Ok I did box breathing twice today and after a few minutes I conked out for 45 minutes the first time and 30-45 the second time. Has this happened to anyone else? I do walk 20-30 miles a day dog walking so thought maybe it's since I finally get to lay down, I relax and conk out. Any thoughts? I will try sitting up but even I. The past when ITry meditation sitting up I have to lay down. Thanks so much for your time.
Can I lie down while doing this or do I have to be kneeling or sitting? I actually find my body tensing up a lot as I try to breathe so deeply. Focuing on my diaphragm in and out actually uses a lot of muscles. When I lie down my whole body is more relaxed.
this made me a feel a little uncomfortable. i had a slight ache in the back of my head and struggled at the bottom part of the my breath.... but it did calm me down....
I am really quite surprized that the Seals use that style of breathing in a tactical setting when there are more efficient ways that breath is used to maintain clarity under duress. I would recommend full-body breathing as it creates none of the tensions that I see in this instructor's body when he inhales and exhales. A combatant has to learn to link his breath with the sensory part of the brain via the brainstem. The body already knows how to adjust the charge/discharge cycle to meet current needs. All that is required is learning how to unregulate the breath and not control it. Fear has a controlling effect on breath, for a number of legitimate reasons. But it is when it becomes reflexive that it impedes performance. I am really surprised that the Seals don't already know this.
Sometimes a hard breath in and long out is more manageable in an emergency setting where your focus may not be on your breathing b/c things are going horrible. I've tried both ways, but honestly slow calm rhythmic breathing is something you have to work at when your pumped full of adrenaline. It's like you chest rise and fall takes over. Maybe one day I'll get there. What IS more manageable to do when pumped with adrenaline or when short of breath because doing something active or carrying gear is a hard deep breath and a slow deep breath. It's more in line with what your body is trying to do anyway.
I think you both make good points. I think he's coming from a good place but the Seal makes a few sketchy recommendations that betray his lack of understanding of the involved anatomy. Not so dissimilar to what I have encountered in some Yoga classes. Recommendations like the Seal's often "work", but perhaps not for the reasons the Seal thinks they do...preventing hyperventilation, and reducing sympathetic arousal - sure. But also, it's a Dumbo's-magic-feather kind of thing. And in most circumstances, that's fine - better than standing there panicking. And I wish people would stop just throwing "diaphragm" around as if they actually understood what it does, and how!
Nancy Jones had the same ... maybe your should count faster in the beginning and in the next turn to hold you slower the count - expend the hold time slowly
what Natacus Maximus said, Slow down the inhalation. Focus more on breathing from your stomach and diaphragm. I noticed the first time I tried (having a bad habit of chest breathing) that trying to take false "deep breaths" through my chest were ruining the pattern.
Change the box to drop the hold. Do a 8-4-8-4. 8 in and 4 hold. Breathe with your sides rather than your belly to get the full expansion. Do 8-4 till you don't feel panic them move to 10-5. You want to climb to 16-8 for full benefits. You can get up to 32-16 but beyond that you won't get much benefit.

everything lies on breathing. Breathing is precious and important. We should train our way of breathing so to train our damn mind. sO THAT WE can tame our brain. Box breathing and 4 7 8 breathing is effective i came across. beautiful.
Does anyone get that feeling that u just have to move position,? or just stop-and breath normal,?maybe this is the whole idea,? by training you body to this rhythm,? i feel like i need to change it,?

Thank you for having Mark Divine. I’ve been doing boxing breathing everyday now for 5 min in the morning and sometimes at night.
Thank you for this, I do this everyday, this is truly invaluable.
Really helps both when at the gym and while focusing on work. Can be stressful while focusing on trades, but this really keeps me focused. Good stuff
