Extracting Caffeine From Mountain Dew
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2018
- Mountain Dew has been my favorite drink for a very long time and I thought it would be interesting to try to extract the caffeine from it. This video documents the process of extracting the caffeine using methylene chloride and also goes into the history and science of synthetic caffeine.
Thank you so much for watching this video! If you would like to suggest a video idea please leave it in the comments, and if you enjoyed please like and subscribe! It was my pleasure to add a bit of science to your day!

Extracting caffeine from Mountain Dew
.. is what I do.
Roses are red
Chase is a hunk
Forget the caffeine
I'd rather be drunk
I've been watching these videos for a little over a year now, and I love every upload. It's great to see genuine people doing things they like to do. Keep it up my dude!
Another great video! Fun fact, I used to work with methylene chloride while making pharmaceutical product (used to coat some oral medication). Now I work with epichlorohydrin, which is from the same group I believe, but also in oral medication!
That’s really interesting! I did not know methylene chloride was used for that.
you wouldnt happen to be working in epoxy/polymers?
they are a fair bit different, the epichlorohydrin is a reactive substance (being an epoxy) it can reactin 2 different ways (from the chlorine in a SN2 and an epoxy ring opening)
That's confidential ;)
Not a fun fact tbh
@@promosopaplays3559 yea this isn’t a fun fact. A fun fact is like "The yossomer bird lays eggs from its mouth unlike other birds" or something.
Just curious why you needed to do this as they already make caffeine free mountain dew lol.
It can be used as a drug
Specifically a stimulant
Caffeine free mt dew cant be found anywhere anymore
"Mountain don't?"
FOR SCIENCE
Drop some molten Gallium on your Aluminium can of Mountain Dew... fun embrittlement.
This guy seriously deserves more subscribers and views. I know a lot of people say that, but this guy puts in time and effort into his videos and is comparable to a lot of big science UA-camrs.
I know this is an old clip but have you ever thought to redo this experiment utilising mountain dew concentrate from soda stream it’ll hopefully increase your yield
Super interesting
Damn I wish I found this channel a long time ago
Learning to extract it so I can put caffeine in my thc tea
Just came here from Tom Scott's video and, lo and behold, another Mountain Dew video. They should be giving you product placement money.
Good job.
I love u man u so good at this
convincing myself watching this is productive as I drink Mountain Dew and procrastinate studying for a chem test
I would be very happy to see you doing a collaboration with SciShow or other educational channels, as it will give your channel a great exposure.
Your content is carefully thought out and well-made, plus you have a charming charisma. I love your channel 😊
That would be really cool! Thanks!
Good work. Now you need a roto-evaporator for cooler (therefore better) recovery.
Ah... mountain dew, you're the one who got me into it years ago on your video with tom scott, ... even though you told me that it was worse for my teeth than coke
DCM dosen't really make a stable emulsion with water, and not mixing hard enough means there is very little transfer, multiple extractions are recommended too. if you heat the DCM to evaporate it, then you should put a cold flask on top to catch all the caffeine that sublimates (you'd be emulating a cold finger)
Could boiling at a lower temperature work? Apparently it boils at roughly 40 degrees Celsius (about 110F?)
I believe it would. I’m tempted to try this again and just leave it out to evaporate. My hot plate is not very good and it is hard to control the temperature.
Do you have any scholarship offers?
Not yet
It'll come in time 😉
Chase, you are a beast. Come visit this winter.
Thanks Gavin!
you should’ve placed a round bottom flask with water over your beaker to collect the sublimed caffeine
What's the worst pop you can have?
Is the decaf mountain dew drinkable after the process?
It still would have some methylene chloride in it so I would not recommend drinking it
Can u fill a pen with ceasium or sodium potassium alloy and write with it
I could try
You could have not used the heat plate and just let it naturally eveporate, that way you'd have gotten more yield, but the downside is that it would take a lot longer...
should have used a cold finger condenser for the sublimation.
There are 3 men on a boat, a Russian man, a Mexican man, and an American man. The boat they're on is too heavy rendering it unable to move. In order to continue their journey they must throw some of their valuables off of the boat. The Russian man throws a box of nukes off of the boat and says "we have too many of these in our country. The Mexican man throws a box of tacos off of the boat and says "we have too many of these in our country" then the American man throws the mexican man off of the boat and says "we have too many of these in our country".
Is it safe to drink?
Probably not, it will still have trace amounts of the chemicals
@@ScienceC that's what i thought. you know around 10ish years ago they released caffeine free mountain dew and i swear it was discontinued within months. theres still a few floating around for almost $24 a 12 pack since they're so rare
Question: how old are you my dude?
christian devey I’m friends with him he’s 13
@@cobysuski5851 nope. You lying.
Does caffeine taste like anything? Else I'd like some caffeinated water.
Yeah i don't like coffee, nor the taste of sodas, which i need a lot of for an actual effect. And energy drinks are just waay too fucking sweet for me...
Caffeine has a slight bitter taste alone, but since only small amounts (54 mg per can of Mountain Dew) are present, you can’t really taste it.
@@ScienceC let's be honest. Mountain dew is soo sweet that you wouldn't taste it anyways. Even if there was like idk a few drops that biteX stuff. Which is designed to be and is truly repulsive. You wouldn't taste it.
Since let's be honest. Mountain dew is more like syrup. If you drop one drop of it outside it will be flooded by ants in no time
Ya see. Ya see. Ya see. Chill out a little bit lmao
Do you plan to enter the 2018 Google Science Fair?
I looked into it, but unfortunately I didn’t have any great ideas.
How about designing super cheap breathalyzers, making them so ubiquitous that drunk driving becomes irrelevant, saving thousands of lives? What do you think?
That is actually a really good idea! I will definitely have to research that
Thanks! I got the idea because I've been taking drivers ed for the past month and those stats about drunk driving have really stuck in my head. O_O
Yeah it’s pretty crazy, luckily it’s less of a problem now with things like Uber but it is still a big issue.
e
You should hate it. It rotten your teeth
Don't drink this shit.
