- As one of the greatest riff masters of all time, James Hetfield needs gear that performs as monstrously as he does-picks included. When he came to Dunlop looking for a pick to meet his high standards, we worked closely with him to create a solution that keeps up with and even enhances his performance.
We used the Flow Standard Pick 1.0mm as our starting point. The thrash titan put it through a full battery of tests on the road and came back to us with the tweaks and adjustments he needed to make it just right. First, we incorporated the Black Fang Pick's blended beveled edges for a super snappy attack that rings out with bright articulation, ensuring that every note and chord makes an impact through all that speed and gain. Next, we made it a bit heavier, going to 1.14mm-not normally available in the standard Flow Pick line-for the perfect balance between mass and articulation. Lastly, we enhanced the grip, creating a custom pattern so that the pick stays put when Hetfield digs in.
“The White Fang Pick has amazing grip when sweating from heavy riffing, and a smaller profile to go faster,” he says. “Plus, the white is easier to see when they get thrown into the crowd.”

No fast downstrokes in this video at all. Any time the pick makes contact on an upstroke it's called alternate picking.
Dave plays faster though.

One side of the pick should be covered in titanium to endure his downstrokes

I feel like some of his best riffs lately are the ones he doesn’t put too much thought into. I feel like a lot of the riffs from the Death Magnetic demos were better than the final versions. Same with a lot of the Hardwired songs.
Why is the guitar tone here better than Hardwired. They need to use this tone on a album.

Young Hetfield and Current Hetfield feels like 2 separate entities. I can't wrap my mind around the fact that they're the same person. I feel like if I ever met him in person it would just click.

Black Fang is such an excellent pick but the White Fang seems to address the very small nit-picky issues with it to make possibly the absolute perfect pick.

Damien Omen 6 james gave on of those to me at the show in mannheim two weeks ago and they feel amazing tbh. Not that i would dare to play it myself but the grip is really nice and the pick feels very comfortable. I think im gonna order some as well as soon as they are avalible.

For no money in the world I would get rid of that pick! Are you going to a show in Australia? Slipknot & Metallica sounds like a really good deal to me. We had ghost as support act which was really cool but slipknot sounds great as well, definitely got to see them some time.

James's picks will be slightly different to what the public get I've seen on eBay slight color difference and the graphics differ as well some bigger or smaller wolf heads on them they are personalized for him , we will all get a standard design.. mate if I was you I'd get a mad ass frame put the tour shirt , concert ticket , Hardwired album cover and your White Fang in it and hang it above my guitar rack .. yeah bro I'm going and he'll yeah with Slipknots new album will be induced as well ..dude Ghost are cool as nice one.. I was thinking about making a necklace out of it by drilling a hole in it but I'm not entirely sure yet if I really want to do that. But then again, I would have it with me at all times and not only up on the wall in my room. I just checked eBay and saw some like mine (1.14 mm) and some others (1 mm) but I don't know which of the two we are going to get to buy.

Used Jim Dunlop Jazz III's for many many years. The White Fang is the only pick I use now. Only downside is pick scrapes leave a huge notch in them. Surprising since they are Ultex. Just don't scrape where ya pick. I swear they sound more balanced and produce more clarity than any other pick I've tried so far.

It takes me back to an interview in the late 80s where he was reluctant to do endorsements because of the high price of most guitar gear
Picks are the least expensive piece of gear, yet they can have the most impact on your tone. He was using Dunlop .88s at the time. I picked a few up and my tone got chunkier almost immediately. I had been using some plastic Fender picks, Mediums, and playing those Metallica riffs never sounded right. I tried the Dunlop .73s that Scott Ian and Dave Mustaine were using, and that .15mm made a difference. It just didn't have the same bite. These days I go with the JazzIII 1.5mm... the size is right, and the thickness lets me use a little less force, which helps me pick faster. I gave one to my buddy at work, and he likes it, so it's definitely good tech.

Got mine today, ordered both 1.0 and 1.14, Id have to say I like the 1.14 a bit better. Quality pick, one of the better picks I've tried.

My absolute favorite pick. The 1.14.
these picks are awesome, I love them, though, IDK if it's my technique, my aggressiveness, or what I do when I practice (every single day, between 30 minutes and 3 hours total, one day I did like 9 hours total), but each pick lasts me like 2 weeks, wish they lasted longer, but, oh well, already got a 24 pick set, should get me a year of playtime
At around 0:55 he actually used alternate picking...put the video at half speed and you can see it
