Scott that's music to my ears and brings back a memory when I worked as a brakeman on the Chessie(C&O) and we was working a long cut of loaded hoppers with a GP9 and that old Geep's amp meter had to be spending a lot of time bouncing in the red zone but, the engineer was skilled and we got the job done.
Best sounding engines I ever heard. I used to love the sound of them in the early morning hours roaring through Waltham Mass on the Fitchburg Division of the Boston and Maine. You could faintly hear them coming from Boston getting louder and louder. By the time they were in Waltham, the sound was incredible. I loved hearing those engines, they sounded so powerful.
That house at 09:30. Imagine getting stuck in your own driveway waiting for a train to pass. Lol personally I think it’d be cool as heck to have tracks going thru my front yard, sit on the porch and watch trains.
I had the tracks for Kansas City Southern going through my parents backyard! We lived off Airline Hwy in Metairie Louisiana and back in the day the old Kansas City line ran up the side of Airline Hwy and we lived a block away from Clearview and Airline! So we not only got to see the freight trains but the Amtrack trains as well! Once a month the freight trains would smash a 18 Wheeler or cars and trucks all because idiots would stop at the red light on the tracks! The engines would start blowing their horns right behind my parents house! Talk about nightmares as a kid trying to sleep in the middle of the night! I don't know what was more scary the horns or the sound of the engines sounding like they are about to drive through your house! Then those old tracks were really bad so you constantly worried about derailments happening which did from time to time! I remember two boxcars laying on their sides for almost a year in front of the cemetery Garden of Memories before Kansas city Southern finally removed them! After years of trucks and cars getting crushed Jefferson Parish forced Kansas City Southern to move their tracks to the back set of tracks where the Central Ave freight yard was held! I did have a lot of fond memories of the old trains even though I had many nightmares as a kid!
Sweet vid man. Reminds me of my years on the Chicago and northwestern. They had a bunch of GP7s. They used them in the yard, on wayfreights and transfer jobs. A solid all around workhorse of a loco.
@@RailPreserver2K nice info... does it have the same cnw unit number or did they change it... at the time of the cnw/up merger back in 95 we had 10 GP9s on the roster... one of them, cnw 4527 was acquriuerd from the QNSL railway... the others, cnw 4450-4459, were acquired from the rock island
It is terrible that this engine isn't back where it belongs in the heart of apple country. It's rightful and true home is riding the rails of the Gettysburg railroad in Adams county PA. Many years ago this engine had a beautiful Leslie RS3L mounted on the long hood end. I had a video of this beast working the Cadbury plant in Aspers some years ago, but I am afraid I cannot find it. It is really too bad because the engineer was working the hell out of the engine. Fantastic clouds of black smoke with the throttle advancements....oh man!
Ahhh, looks like an old dual control unit. Either that or it was built to run long hood forward. All of the MOPS old GP9's were dual control. It was a mess inside the cab too. Always smelled like wet stale air. These were really good loco's. Easy to work off of switching too. On the main line ours stayed in Notch 8. That was standard position for them on the MOP and I've gone back many many times 4 or 5 engines deep restarting one as we rolled down the tracks.
That too but that Enginer is the GM on that line and was also and Engineer on the Maumee And Western Railraod same line as this now just a different company, So yea I totally agree with what you are saying and granted BT has been around this industry for a while now
Miss the sound of those old GP9's working in the yard when I would go down by the depot and watch them switch out cars.

From watching many GP9's and various models a they've been rebuilt to, they're an engine that handles tough jobs reliably

She refused to give up and puts her all into it
Cool. Nice job Scott. It's good to see the old 105 working the line.
Thank you! I'm always happy to catch a highhood
Worth a watch just for the sound of that engine!

I’d love it!

The old Geep sounds awesome. Seems to run well no smoke. Nice catch.
Thank you!

Thank you! I'd have loved to see the CNW when it was around
If you're able to come down to my neck of the woods in Georgia we actually have a short line that uses a Chicago and Northwestern High Hood GP 9

That was great Scott. Love the sound of that GP9 working hard. An easy slow speed chase for you this time. ;-)
Thanks, I've always loved listening to the drone of a geep under load

It would be nice to see it back on its former line but at least it’s not scrap metal
Well that’s the manager in the engine in this video and when he’s moving railcars he don’t fuck around. Like babying the engine
Fascinating. I think my whole body started to ache watching the struggle. THANKS.
lol don't get sore!
Beautiful! Looks like a former CN or Central Vermont geep.
It is-- ex GT/CV.
Now that's an awesome machine to watch. I see that track is still 10 mile o' bad road .....
I don’t think they’ll ever be over 10 unless they can afford to change the rail. Over 100 years old and brittle.
Wow that shot at 13:30 really shows how bad the rails are....great catch!
Good thing those tracks weren`t wet! Man, they still got a lot to do to get those tracks up to snuff.
They keep sinking money into the swamp
Scott Taipale Those tracks are in terrible shape. I hope Pioneer does not intend to haul chemicals across these rails.

I love the sound of these old Geeps. It's like the train equivalent of a classic muscle car V8 rumble.
Hi I'm putting together a UA-cam Video on the GP 9. Would it be ok if I used some of this footage?
Absolutely a great video! Went right to my favorites list.
Awesome thank you
That sounds soooo badass!!!
Gp9 has a good traction move
What a beautiful video ... Hats Off!!!
Nice Catch!
Thank you
Well shot man
Looks like an EX CN GP9.
The heck is that railroad doing with 50 cars?
I love the emd gp9! ❤
So cool to see all these boxcars. Would you happen to know what they are loaded with?
Powerful Loco
Slow and steady keeps the wheels from slipping!
@@ScottTaipaleRail That, and liberal use of the independent brake.

I really enjoyed watching this both for the rare engine action and the great videography. If I may ask, what camera were you using?
Nice video!!
Thank you
Your welcome!!
I used this to compare with the monster that I call Gp9 face
Lol
Single manned?! Across a grade crossing....or is the conductor/ switchman parked up out of camera view?
What kind of horn is on this unit?
There's one thing that really bothers me about that locomotive. The yellow stripes on the short hood aren't symmetrical.
I see it now
Is it me or are the brakes locked up on that KCS boxcar at the beginning of video? Watch the trucks
The pistons are out on the locomotive in the beginning meaning the locomotive brakes are applied to some degree
is it out of sand?
No, they were just trying to move about 50 loaded cars
seems like it, engineer is riding the jam trying to keep the wheelspin down.
Putting a 50 car train on the worst maintained railroad is a awful idea.
Not the worst maintained, anymore
Love the geeps, but givemn another unit,or tie up,come back strong tommorow,or make a cut
Very quiet
Wouldn't be such a suggle if he'd released the brakes on the unit
Just subscribed!! Great video!
