Did he win a championship? Three. Also League MVP, three years IN A ROW. Two times Finals MVP. Winner of the first three 3 point shootouts. Founding member of the 50-40-90 club. 12 time All Star, three time All Defensive team. Co Captain (with Magic Johnson) of the Olympic Dream Team. And on and on and on... Keep watching Bird videos. He's one of the all time greats. Just an amazing all around player. There's a video on how Bird schooled Jordan, another making the case for Larry as the GOAT, trash talking, fights and so many more. I watched his career as Boston fan and lived for the competition between him and Magic, Jordan, Dominique, the Bad Boy Pistons and other greats of the time. The league was much more physical then, with lots of banging, elbows, forearms and out and out fist fights. What a time it was to be a basketball fan.

The coach that called timeout was K.C. Jones. One of the most respected coaches in Celtics history.
Bird and Magic entered the nba the same year. Bird won rookie of the year. Bird won 3 rings. 3 consecutive MVP awards and was 2nd in mvp voting 6 times.

There are so many stories of Larry's trash-talking it is insane and he4 would not only do it to players but coaches. I mean you listen to players he played with or against and he trash-talked everyone. And if the other team put a white guy on him to guard him he felt disrepected big time.
James Worthy of the Lakers, a HOF player and one of the 50 best of all time, recounted a story of Bird trash-talking him -- telling him exactly how he was going to score, from where, and what he would do depending on how Worthy tried to defend. And then Bird did exactly that. Doing this at all would have been noteworthy, much less against a high-caliber defender, much less IN A PLAYOFF game.
And one thing you might not have noticed, his "left-handed game" wasn't an off the cuff thing -- he told everyone the day before he was going to do it, including the media, which means the other team also knew he was playing with his left hand.
One more thing -- that shot that didn't count, the video mentions that he went over to the bench and told them he was going to the same spot. He was referring to the OTHER team's bench.
For a fun fact, Larry Bird pretty much MADE the step back into a legit move. To give an analogy, while Michael Jackson didn’t invent the moonwalk, he sure as hell made it popular. In the same way, Larry Bird didn’t invent the step back, but he sure as hell popularized it to the point that other NBA legends (like Isiah Thomas and Dominique Wilkins) call the step back Larry Bird’s signature move. (And even today, the general consensus among a lot of basketball heads is that Larry Bird STILL has the best step back the NBA has ever seen)
So in a lot of videos from his early career, you’ll see a lot of defenders falling to the floor whenever Larry did his step back. It wasn’t that they were bad defenders, they were actually GREAT defenders, it was just that none of them had ever SEEN a step back before and thus had NO IDEA what the hell it was or how in the world to handle it. Later on in his career, the rest of the league began to catch on and began coming up with ways to try and counter it, so it wasn’t quite as easy for Larry to drop guys to the floor with a step back anymore. But even then, even with people coming up with strategies to counter it, his step back was so good that he’d blow past them the vast majority of the time anyway

Here's some info for you: Larry Bird was 6'9"at least, played 13 years (bad back cut short his career) and averaged 24 point per game, 10 boards, and 6 assists FOR HIS CAREER. Bird was Rookie of the Year, 3x NBA champion, 3x NBA MVP (and he won them consecutively, three years running). Larry was a 12x All Star, 9x All NBA 1st Team and 1x 2nd Team, 3x All NBA Defensive 2nd Team, and he was 2x Finals MVP. He was also All Star game MVP 1x and won the 3-pt shootout championship 3x.

And Ironically, as coach of the Pacers, they met the Lakers in the Finals and although they lost, in that Lakers 3 peat, they took them to 6 games in a year Shaq led the league in scoring and completed the MVP Hat Trick

Pat Riley, Coach of the LA Lakers said “If I had to choose a player to take a final shot to win a game I’d choose (Michael) Jordan, but if I could pick one to shoot to save my life I would pick Bird.”
Jordan says he learned everything about trash talking from Bird. He saw how effective Bird was at getting in people's heads and disrupting their game.

Off all the greats of that era, Bird was the only player that bested Jordan. 3-0 in playoffs. He’s the only one Jordan wouldn’t trash talk. Larry trash talked a lot, but always backed it up.

He was the players player. Everyone wanted to be as lethal as bird who had no holes in his game. He could take on any entire team because he changed the flow of the game on the court.
Bird dominated the most talented era in basketball history and everyone in the NBA knew it.
Respects to him
Larry had an unreal basketball IQ, he saw just how plays were going to play out. And he studied tapes on his own, over and over, so he knew how his own teammates and players on other teams would react in different situations. That's how he made it look like he had eyes on the back of his head. It wasn't just luck or pure risk, it was all calculated. His record speaks for itself.

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, Larry's game reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, track & Field, soccer, poker, & strategic chess in his head, and that's what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched!
Larry was the founding member of the 50/40/90 club, clutch player 3 Championships 3 MVP.
Larry played with a mangled finger. He got in college before he played basketball. Larry played with a career ending back injury from mid 85 to the end of his career. Paving a driveway for his mother. He didn't even take any pain meds. He lost the stability of his back. Before the games he had to be in a brace, get adjustments
He would lay on the ground instead of sit on the bench. The Dr said it's like someone slamming a car door on your finger & keeps smashing it. The other teams knew where to get Larry. If you re-watch Larry vids, you can see dudes getting his back. Rodman was one. Add the Achilles injuries and surgeries on both feet(88/89). It's incredible he was able to do the things he did. Made all the records he did. I seriously doubt any of these new cats could do half of the things Larry did.
I think it was 88/89 when Larry was injured. Two weeks into his time off. He got so bored. He started eating. A lot. He said he ate 10 gallons of ice cream and seven wedding cakes. He chose wedding cakes because he knew they would be good. He said "who would f up a wedding cake?" 😁 Classic Larry Legend

Larry and Magic's careers ran parallel to each other. They both played on the same US all star team in 1978. Then in '79 they played against each other in the NCAA Finals. Magic won that game. Then the next year they were both rookies in the NBA, Magic won the Finals as well as Finals MVP, Larry won Rookie of the year. From there on they were competing against each other as well as leading their teams to win again and again. And finally in 1992 they were the co-captains of the USA Olympic team, the "Dream Team" and of course won the gold together. If you look at their career stats and accomplishments they're very similar to each other.
Also, Larry was the absolute most savage trash talker ever. Jordan learned to be a better trash talker from Larry.
My top 3 all time are Magic, Jordan, and Larry.

When Bird smacked his face against the floor during that playoff game against the Pacers, while in the locker room getting treatment, the Celtics' trainer also said that Bird had suffered a concussion and told Larry he shouldn't play. When the trainer wasn't looking, Bird took off and went back into the game (the video shows him jogging back into the arena). In addition to the concussion, it was later revealed that Bird also suffered a fractured cheekbone from his face hitting the floor. Nonetheless, Bird came back and rallied the Celtics to victory, as the Celtics went on to win the series.

First i want say it’s great to see young guns like yourself seeing the greatness of these old school guys and ask you to watch the “making the case” video by clayton crowley series, especially the Larry bird video. they are all educational if you want to learn about the older players. second James Worthy, who was considered the best player on an NCAA team that had jordan on it, said he would rather guard jordan than bird.

I could tell you never heard much about the Birdman but you’re very observant and I was impressed with your knowledge of the game and you picked up very quickly a few aspects of Bird’s game that sometimes get overlooked like his big heart and his IQ.

You wouldn't have basketball today without Magic and Bird. Ratings were so bad that play off games were being preempted for old movies until players like Bird, Magic, Kareem, and Erving started. They were before Jordan, they taught Jordan.
Also Bird once had a toe infection and played for 3 weeks before seeing a doctor. Doc had to make a two inch incision so it could drain. Bird told him to wrap it and went on to play that very night. By the end the wrapping and sock were soaked in blood but he still played.
THAT IS TRUE GREATNESS MY FRIEND. And I was one of the lucky S.O.B's that got to watch him through his entire career.

Won the league MVP award three years running (only one of three to do it, along with Bill Russel and Wilt Chamberlain). Was voted league MVP either #1 or #2 for 8 years straight. All star team 12 years out of 13 (out for surgery one year). College player of the year. NBA Rookie of the year. Coach of the year. NBA executive of the year. Hall of fame. Despite his back injury, averaged a lifetime 24 points per game and 10 rebounds. And the most clutch player that ever lived.

You didn’t know if Larry would pass, step back or pump fake. He had nerves of steel and skills for days. He was a tough SOB battled injuries especially after his back injury in 1985. Great court vision and amazing but weird grace. Entertaining as f**k. Larry Bird was clear (Bill Murray: SpaceJam). Perhaps the most complete player the Game has ever seen. 3x MVP, Coach of the Year, Executive of the Year, founder of the 50-40-90 club, 3x 3 point contest winner.

The problem today is that anyone not knowing who Bird was wouldn't find him otherworldly. The thing is, he was called "the great innovator" whereas a lot of things he did like stepbacks behind the back passes - those were unprecedented until then. Him and Magic revolutionized the game.

At end of 70’s playoff games weren’t even televised live until Bird & Magic entered the league. Their rivalry saved the nba and MJ took it global. I was a showtime fan but Bird was the best player in the 80’s again MJ took over in the 90’s. Bird was founder and repeat 50/40/90 club. Watch making the case for goat prospects.

@ Chuck : Bird (vs Utah), back in 1985, 18 feb, -- had scored 30 pts, 12 rebs, 10 asts and [9]STEALS, and quit the game before the end of the third quarter,,,, wtf??!! --- yeah, 33 minutes played, and some of the Utah stat guys came down to inform the team that he was on the verge of a historic quadruple double, and Bird's reaction was: "Nah, I've done enough damage to them already" .... Bird had One full quarter to improve even on that outer-worldly 33 MINUTES, if you let that sink in, it still has my head spinning, just to try and conceive the amount of talent, IQ and skill that is required to come anywhere near such a box score, let alone to actually do that and even be "nonchalant" about it. His court vision has never been matched, by a country mile. This little extra feat - for me - lifted him to undisputed GOAT status, as an All Round basketball player.

Keep going on bird young buck there’s so many amazing things about this man from his shooting passing rebounding playing through 3 different what should have been career ending injuries not counting that fractured jaw that you just saw in the playoffs the the 3 titles he won to the 3 consecutive mvps he won being the most clutch player in history and most likely the biggest trash talker ever and being the only man to own an undefeated record against Jordan in the playoffs I could go on and on but great reaction and keep it up

One of the things you have to remember is that basketball was a whole different ball game during the day a lot more contact back then and most people just look at Larry Bird and they see a white guy who's slow and can't jump they don't see the man who's got a basketball computer behind his eyes they don't see the man that spent from the time he was in Middle School all the way up oh he's on the ball team at school but he was out playing with the waiters and the staff at a local hotel every day they were all older than him they'd let him play and they were good to him and that's all he asked and he learned which is why when you get to watching him when he's really trash talking you'd think that he came up playing in Harlem because he's got those mannerisms he's got that style and he's got that written determination all in all Larry was a goat.

A lot of the clips are put of context. For instance, the game vs the pacers , he fractured his face and was a decisive playboff game. The steal by bird was also a decisive play off game. He won 3 3pt competition in a row, founding member of the 40 60 90 club, 3 times consecutively mvps only 2 other players accomplished this and is not MJ nor Kobe nor Lebron. 12 time all star, (played 13 season, the season that wasn’t all star, he actually did not play, had surgery) 2 time mvp finals, and in the first finals he played the award was not given to him because he was a sophomore, even though he was the best player. 3!rings. he played more than half of his career with an injury that was career ending injury for a lot of players, but not for him. He used to wear a body brace, then a doctor would align his spine for the game, then go back to the brace. When he retired took the brace to the fields and destroyed it with a shotgun. He had no quit in him. Birds team lost, Michigan had a better team and Indiana only had bird. After loosing, his team mates invited him to party to celebrate the 2nd place, but bird replied, no gotta go to train. Magic and Larry came into league in same year. They literally saved the NBA. Prior to them the NBA finals were shown TAPE DELAYED and not live. Larry played for Indiana State and was national player of the year while Magic played for Michigan State. Larry led ISU to a 34-0 record and played Magic and MSU in the NCAA championship game. It is still the highest rated basketball game of all time. MSU and Magic won as they were able to to double team Bird because he was all ISU really had. These two and how things played out is proof there is a God. Working class Bird goes to Boston while the flashy showtime Magic goes to LA which are the two most storied franchises in history. They dominated the 80’s.

I'm old enough to remember that before Larry Bird won his three consecutive MVPs he was second runner up three times and after those three consecutive NBA MVPs he was running up twice. He won the three-point contest 3 times in a row and was the founding member of the 50/40-90 club.

Bird and magic were rookies together in the 1979- 80 season. Bird won Rookie of the Year and Magic won a title. I'm pretty sure Bird would like to trade those two things. They absolutely play very similar games, with the biggest difference being Larry was a better shooter and magic was just a tiny bit better passing. Up until the early to mid-90s, they were absolutely the 1 and 1A top NBA players ever. There is no one in today's NBA as good as these two were

Larry Bird was my idol growing up in Kentucky in the 80s. To me, he was and is the GOAT. The man had the BEST fakes of anyone...ever. That's why defenders were ending up in heaps on the floor, because they had to respect his shot, his passing, AND his ability to drive with the ball. You saw him, sometimes his shooting was just unconscious. I think there was 5 or 6 scenes of him posterizing people, so it's not like he really couldn't jump, even though that was his rep. Yeah, he wasn't the fastest player on the court, but he didn't need to be. He had the highest basketball IQ and court vision of anyone I've ever seen. Thanks for reacting to this vid!

Also, the 76's were the only team besides Bird's Celtics and Magic's Lakers to win a championship in the 80's (1983). All the others belong to these two legends.
And, they saved the NBA. Look it up!

On to Bird: People doubted Bird because he is white. They did back then until they had to play against him and people do now who never saw him play. Bird went to the finals 5x and won 3. He won three straight MVP’s (Only Wilt and Bill Russell have ever done that..not MJ, not Kobe, not LeBron) and finished 2nd four times. He won two final MVP’s, he won the first 3 three pt contests, he was 2nd team all defense 3x. He averaged 10 rebounds a game which is more than Ewing. Career avg Stat line: 24.3 pts, 10reb, 6.3 assists, 1.7 steals. He founded the 50-40-90 club (fg%, 3pt%, FT%). He was clutch as clutch can be. He would tell the other team where he was going and where he was shooting from and then he’d do it and make it. He played hurt. None of this game management bullshit. He tore both Achilles heels and came back. His back was just awful the last 4 years or so that he had to receive treatment for hours before the game to be able to play and it’s why he had to lay on the floor when on bench and on planes. Yet he played because he loved and respected the game. He dove for loose balls, he played defense, and he just never quit. Magic, MJ, and Kobe were the same way. This is why fans respect the hell out of them. Larry a absolutely deserves to be in GOAT conversation. Just listen to what other greats say about him. Not saying he is as I have to say MJ, but definitely in conversation. He would be dominant in today’s game especially in today’s rules. It was so much more physical back in the 80’s that you would be shocked to see what wasn’t called back then.

People severely underestimate his athleticism. His vertical was same as Karl Malone at 28” and nobody calls the mailman un-athletic. Of course he isn’t MJ quick or jumping ability, but who is? Bottom line is he was guarded by some of the best defensive players of all times and yes all of them were more athletic, yet he dominated his era along with Magic and Later MJ. Guarded by: Michael Cooper, Dominique, Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Marques Johnson, James Worthy, Clyde Drexler, etc. He was really just that good.

Larrys step back and pump fakes were something else, Ive heard other Celtics players say Larry used everything to misdirect defenders and opposing players, body language, eye movement, shoulder jerks, all kinds of stuff to make guys just drop like they were tripping on their own feet. we cant see a lot of that subtle stuff in videos but it must be true the videos seem to back it up. He really got the job done for a guy that wasnt very fast and couldnt jump too high. Most of the time Larry was unguardable, even when his shot was blocked by two or even three players in an effort to shut him down Larry always found a pass that got the ball where it needed to be. Larry was a master at misdirection and could always be counted on in clutch situations. Larry Legend.

the Coach was KC Jones I believe and you should learn a little before criticizing him. He has 8 rings as a player, 1 as assistant coach and 3 as head coach (12 rings) and a perfect 8-0 as a player in the NBA championship It may have been a poorly timed, time out, but I trust his judgement in a game and Bird did hit the basket again putting them into overtime.

Bird and Magic did NOT like one another for the longest time. Their friendship grew throughout their time in the NBA. But at first, not a chance they would have a civil conversation. So by the end of it, Magic calling him a friend forever means a lot.

What you need to know, is when Larry talked trash he ALWAYS backed it up every time. Also he won the three point contest 3 times in a row and he was the very first winner of the three point contest, not to mention his 60 point game. Larry Bird was the trash talking KING, ask anyone including NBA hall of famers, he was trash talking and backing it up before Michael Jordan had even made it big in the league. I'm sure someone already told you but the bench was nuts cuz he just put up 60. No one else won three point contests till Larry didn't compete. Larry won the first, second and third year. Larry wasn't greedy with the ball as you can see with his passing so it was easy to get people to fall for the fake pass because he didn't hog the ball and gave everyone on the team the opportunity to play. And MJ learned how to trash talk from Larry. You'll figure out the Magic parts on your own...

Bird won the first three 3 point contest in History. Hodges won the fourth but Larry didn't compete. A Reporter asked Hodges if it didn't matter that Larry wasn't in the contest. Hodges said Bird knows where to find me. Then the reporter told Bird what Hodges said that Bird knows where to find him. Bird replied yea at the end of the Bulls Bench.
They called him Larry Legend for a reason. Pat Riley said of he needed someone to make a shot to win ia game he'd choose Jordan. If he needed someone to make a shot to save his life he'd choose Bird. James worthy said Jordan makes you look slow, Bird makes you look stupid. Every great every legend will tell you he's the best there was.
