Bird avg. over career just over 10 rebounds. Bird avg. over career (2) 3pts baskets per game with most of his shots coming from mid range and foul shots.

Young Buck.. Bird was the master at Juking somebody .. He was a great passer so people were always expecting him to pass .. Players from this era were coached to work the ball around to get a high % shot .. The 3 wasnt shot much for that reason .. Pull up some of these old games and study the offense , they moved the ball with constant motion and back picks and give and go... Now keep in mind they actually played Defense ..

Bird and Magic did play similar in respect to passing and getting everybody involved. They can win games with their passing alone. Magic was the flashier passer but Bird had incredible passes too. Both elite in passing. Both have that vision pass first mentality like Lebron. These two players is who Lebron resembles the most minus the brute force to the basket game. Lebron is more like if Magic and Shaq had a baby.
In respect to Bird and Magic I would give Bird the slight edge in being the better player. Bird was the better shooter and the better clutch performer.

Larry bird is 6’9” and from 1986 till he retired in 93 he played with a debilitating back injury which is why he had to retire several years before he should have which makes it even more impressive that he played hurt players don’t do that nowadays but he played till his body told him he could not anymore!!

Great show man!!! I was blessed to grow up in the 70's and played ball until I was 35. Larry Legend and Dr. J were how I tried to play like. Back then it was no blood no foul. Hard to watch the crying in the game now. We fought like enemies on the court but after the game we were gentlemen. I miss that. Todays stars are amazing and with the physical atributes and science they can play a long time. Different era different game. Larry could play just as good in todays game. I'm not sure how todays athletes would handle the physical abuse of the old game. Pistol Pete blew my mind. UNBELIEVABLE PLAYER!!!

Magic and Larry went into the the pros the same year they retired within a year of each other and they went into the Hall of Fame on the same day oh and they were best friends.

Hey Chuck, I enjoy all your reaction videos, thank you for that. I think Bird's Fake Outs before shooting work out so well for him because he passes the ball so much, no one knows for sure if he's really going to pass it or not. They look, he shoots.

Back in the 80’s they weren’t shooting the number of threes per game that they do now. It was more of an inside mid-range game with threes in key spots. Bird probably averaged 6 or 7 attempts from 3 per game but I could be a little low on that. Key pt is he won the 1st three 3pt contests would shoot 40% or better from 3 several seasons.

@@johnnyb4927 yeah I just went and looked. That seems crazy low to me. I remember games where he went 5 for 5. Really surprised to see 1.9 attempts per game. I think he shot a lot of 2’s that were in 19-21 foot range. Shows you that 3 pt were not a huge part of the game yet. While typing I went and looked at ‘86 season and the league avg per game per team was 3.3 attempts. I would not have guessed that.

@@Kennyindia And the wizardly and IQ of Bill Russell? Unfortunately no recorded games but it is there in stats. Many don't know that Bill Russell was the first black to ever coach in the NBA. He coached as a "player/coach" for the who? Boston Celtics.
Wilt Chamberlain was the NBA’s first GOAT.
He was so amazing that the league had to change rules to make him less dominant.
Even with the new rules established he was still considered the GOAT by his peers and fans and by many to this day.
When the NBA and ABA merged in 1976 the league became stocked with talent with Bird about to join in just 4 years.
Bird stepped into a starting role as a rookie and dominated, winning ROY over Magic.
Bird mastered the original concept of the fundamentals of the game as it was meant to be played at the time, in a way that NO ONE before or since ever did.
When MJ came into the league, Bird schooled him on “the way to play”, but MJ was so athletic that he could transcend the game and bypass the fundamentals with his speed and jumping ability by simply going up, around, or over defenses.
Jordan’s amazing abilities transformed the game yet again and brought about a 2nd change in how the game would played from then on…until Steph came along to transform it once again into the 3pt shoot outs of today.
I don’t care for the soft wide open game of today, and I can appreciate Jordan’s abilities, but I love the game as a TEAM sport, and players like MJ and Kobe IMO were selfish individual players who cared more about personal accolades, scoring titles, and box scores rather than the success of their team or teammates.
I would rather see Larry drive, draw a double team, then SEE & THINK to make a no look behind the head pass (assist) to his open teammate for an easy 2, rather than see MJ mindlessly drive through a double team (with blinders on), keep the ball for himself to draw a foul, and then make 2 at the line to pad his own stats…I don’t even care if he makes a spectacular dunk for a 3 pt play.
That’s not the strategy or genius of Birds play and why I love his style above all others.

The three point shot was only added in Bird's rookie year in the NBA. Even though he was known as a good shooter, most teams and players really took a while to adapt their tactics to new styles. What they had all trained to do up to then was to get into the paint and take high percentage shots.

The three point line was started "as an experiment" in 1979/1980. His first coach, Bill Fitch hated it. In fact, a lot of changes in the game and this was a *big* forcing coaches to handle their fundamentals differently. So I count Bird's first year in the Celtics there aren't going to be any three points.

Yep East was way tougher than West back then. West has LA and Houston with a little Portland thrown in. East had Celtics, Sixers, Atlanta, Bulls, Detroit, with a little Bucks and Cleveland thrown in.

Yeah, I saw Larry play live. And the guy is right - if the score was close, and Larry was on the floor, you expected some sort of miracle shot or play from Bird with a kind of unreal confidence.
In Bird's era teams averaged 2.8 3 pointers per game, now teams average 34.1 attempts per game. Imagine him attempting up to 12 times more as that stat would suggest, the mind boggles.

I feel like the best way to describe Larry Bird's play style is if somebody had watched the game in the future and studied what was going to happen and then came back in time and played it with that knowledge.

By the way Larry Bird is 6'10. Patrick Ewing I believe is 7'0. So really Ewing only had 2 inches on Bird. So yeah, Bird is a very large human being.

Larry shattered his knuckles before going to the NBA. Said his shooting never felt right after that. Imagine if that had never happened. When he smashed his face and broke his orbital bone he came back and won the game with double vision. BTW Magic was wearing a Bird jersey under his warmup at Larry's retirement.

At 15:38 you saw a pissed off Bird who returned after a cheekbone fracture earlier in that game.They were playing Chuck Person and the Pacers. Person scored 16 points over Birds head before that, but Larry was having none of that shit, and made sure to look right at Chuck with the ball in his hand after the block. Celtics won that game, after Bird came back from the injury in the same game.

It wasn’t the same game but same series nonetheless..Bird was in traction before the game as per usual back then and the trainer had specifically told him he was done for the day/game…Larry waited until they weren’t paying attention and ran out of the room to make that return

Larrys’s 40% from 3 is a different animal than Steve Kerr averaging 40%. The other team’s defensive plan is for Bird, he is option A on offense and league alpha. He’s expected to shoot last second shots, difficult shots, beat double teams, and playmake. Its way tougher 40% than players whose role is to shoot after their teammate has drawn the D or on the swing.

You need to watch "The Greatest Rivalry in Sports History (Magic vs Bird)". This is when basketball was a team sport that was about winning the game. There was no 3 point line when Larry started but he won the first 3 point contest then won the second then won the third while wearing his warm up jacket. If you looked closely at Jordan, Kobe, Lebron and many others you will see things that Larry did. From his passing, trash talking, shooting and hustling there was no one better.

Everyone thinks of Bird as a 3pt shooter because of how he destroyed the 3pt competition, and no doubt he could sink them. But back then 3pt shots weren’t as much a part of the game, so you really don’t see as much as you feel like you should.
Both Larry Bird and Magic Johnson say they picked up a lot of their moves from "Pistol " Pete Maravich.
Great reaction brother. Bird is gonn always be my GOAT. Some people say Jordan or LeBron but if you look at every angle of the game of Basketbalk you can clearly see that those guys were all about themselves & Bird did just as much passing as he did scoring. But Bird did want the ball in all one shot situations. He had Supreme confidence & the highest Basketball IQ I've ever seen. Buy the reason he's the GOAT in my opinion is he did the same things the other guys do that are in the GOAT Discussion, his stats are equally as good & in some cases better & he did it with much less athletic ability & couldn't jump nearly as good. And from day one of his career he played hurt in every single game until he retired. He did it through hustle, pure gritt, & most of all Basketball IQ.
I saw Larry in college and all basketball in the 80'-90's.
I respect the younger generation that look bk and want to learn about the old school. I saw him live in Atlanta '88. Game 4.

The advantage old guys like me and Jim Pierce above have is that yes, we watched Larry & Magic in real time, me starting with the NCAA championships, and followed them (I was a die hard Celtics fan) throughout the 80s, along with MJ entering the league in the mid 80s. And we have watched the 90s, the Kobe years, and modern day ball, and can make some judgement calls on the different eras. I'll take a rookie Larry Bird as my number one draft over anyone else, including MJ (my close 2nd).
One overlooked fact- in 1979, Bird inherited a starting roster that were the worst Celtics team in history with a 29-51 record (2nd worst in the NBA). By just adding a rookie Bird to the starting lineup, they went 61-21, one of the most dramatic turnarounds in NBA history, going to the Eastern Conference Finals, losing to Dr J and the 76ers. And Bird and the Celtics ending up being NBA champions the following season.

At the 11:49 timeline when you're reading his stats, you missed the fact that those stats were for three consecutive years, not just for 1984.

I don't think Bird or Magic or Dr J, Doc Rivers, Drexler... the list goes... can play today. These young uns today don't know what a foul is. LeBron got carried off the court for muscle cramps. Bird snuck away from the team doctor and won the game. It's like comparing apples to oranges.

And larry was better than pretty much all of them. They all deserve respect. Glad you're doing your history homework! Id give you a list but I'd go on forever. One of my favorites though that nobody ever covers, Mugsy Bogues. He's not in the goat convo but once you see him and watch him you'll understand the heart players had back then.

I can’t think of another rivalry that was so perfect like Larry and Magic that also had them meet in the finals thanks to being in different conferences. Maybe Russell and Wilt, but Wilt was with sixers for a while so same conf as Celtics. Closest thing for NFL would have been if Brady and Manning were in NFC and AFC so they would have played against each other in multiple Super Bowls.

best passers (regardless of assist numbers) have to include magic, stockton, bird, Bob Cousy, and oscar robertson. i am open to accepting others in the top ten especially a true center (Bill Russell honestly even though he probably mostly got the hockey assists as opposed to true assist)or other big man but if you are looking for true passers bird HAS to be in your top ten as a passer. he literally knows where you are on the court and if you can’t accept that he is as good a passer as anyone, there is a youtube channel that can’t accept that bird was truly great. i won’t mention him by name in a place that puts respect on the best basketball player of my race, just look up bird reactions and scroll. look for a video that says larry is a joke and you’ll find your home.

Well I'd look at Wilkes Chamberlain I would look at Dr Julia serving Dr j magic you know the twin towers Hakeem olajuwon the people mentioned in these clips that you've been doing of Larry Bird they were mentioned for a reason he he played in one of the most talent Rich times. You also have to remember that he and magic came into the NBA together they pretty much left together and probably the best time they ever had was when the two of them played on the 1992 Olympic dream team and that's when you need to check out 11 Hall of famers one team.

i would watch you as you are open minded but let us watch the vid and then you can talk about everything but i had to turn it off because it was impossible to watch any of it with it being stopped every 5 seconds to say something. I like that you are interested in these players and it is very important to me as i refereed in the nba from 1979-1991 but you dont let us watch any of the tape without it stopping every 2 minutes. MJ and LeBron 1 & 2, sorry, you need to do more research... Bird beat all the best in his Era in the playoffs... He was the only one to do it back then... Magic never got past Jordan, but Bird swept Jordan twice... Jordan and the Bulls had a losing record against Bird and the Celtics, and "never" won a playoff game against them (0-6 in playoffs)... Bird's skil set and basketball IQ would carry over to dominate in today's soft league, where most of today's stars would struggle back in Bird's Era... Throw in the medical advancements and he would have played 20 years... But, even though he only played 13 years, 12 were full seasons and he was an All Star for every one of them... It is hard to compare past with present due to the changes in the game and medical advancements, but by the same token, it was tougher in the past than it is now and the longevity factor of today gives more opportunities for stats and such, making current players seem closer to past playets... But in reality, and if you are honest and you compare per Basketball talent / IQ, Bird is top 3 all day long, and LeBron would fall in line lower down... Just My Humble Opinion (from actually watching both play during their primes)...
