Sounds like a lot of… HOOPLA! Sounds like a lot of… HOOPLA! Sounds like… HOOPLA! HOOPLA! (throws brick) Sounds like a lot of hoopla to make over a little game, right? Ha, ha, WRONG!
Ah, I have nostalgia for the version of this game I played as a kid! The art style is so distinct, Cranium games have etched a spot in my…well, Cranium. 🧠
Tweener actually seems interesting, it's just that you're supposed to choose words that are also hints about the answer (beyond just size comparison), that's why for "Car wash" they use "sponge + parking garage" and "SUV + rainstorm"
This was a surprise. I've been a fan of your channel for a while, my dad actually was Richard Tait. Always fun to hear peoples thoughts on Cranium (although I far prefer the original Hoopla to funko's version!). I would recommend checking out some of the original cranium games if you're ever curious.
You know would could be a good alternative to countaloop or toung tied is playing where you can only use one syllable words (like poetry for neanderthals)
The idea that you need to constantly pause and unpause the timer to roll and draw cards sounds really tedious. I feel like you should probably roll once and that's what you do for 3-5 minutes or something.
The issue with that is the roll determines both card category and how you communicate and you can only change cards by a correct guess or taking a penalty extra card. So if you don't reroll each card you can quickly get into a position where don't know what to do for any of your cards for that communication style. I think a good alternative would be to have a slightly longer total time and just not pause for die rolls or new cards (also adds a frantic energy which can be fun in a party game). SungWon also mentioned getting frustrated at rolling the same communication style multiple times in a row so you could change the rules to you can re-roll as often as you want but you can't pause the timer (maybe also have seperate dice for category and communication).
honestly im just amazed that the little cranium category mascots seem unchanged in the decade plus years since ive last seen them. used to play cadoo with my family all the time! honestly i bet its still in the closet
This game looks like a ton of fun, but yeah, I think the fact that it includes pop culture stuff can be a bit of a problem, but I should have expected it from the game subsidiary of the company that fills up store shelves with pop culture figures. Especially weird since this is a spin off of a game that I don't remember relying on pop culture stuff for its questions.
I think Cranium Hoopla already existed without pop culture references. This is a remake/refresh by Funko Games (Funko as in Funko Pop - pop culture references are kind of their thing). But I agree with SungWon on the issues with having a mix of pop culture and regular answers - they should have made genre specific card sets instead.
I like these kinds of party games but I feel like nowadays people make them have too many moving parts and ideas. I feel like people think they have to add a bunch of layers since all the single versions of those games exist (pictionary, charades, taboo, etc...) but it just makes everything less strong when you're trying to have too many things at once.
I appreciate your honest thoughts because the way you were describing the game made it sound really fun but you're so right about the pop culture stuff! I can totally see us not knowing half the references
Just saw you in Blackberry and was reminded that you fell off my youtube recommended. Glad I looked you up so im subscribed now. Loved seeing you in the movie. Looking forward to catching up on your YT content.
As soon as I hear the phrase "pop culture" I immediately know I'll be doomed if the show or movie is recent. Between remakes, political propaganda disguised as entertainment and a general lack of imagination in Hollywood, I'd rather ignore most of what's churned out these days.

This game looks quite interesting but I can already image me and my friends frustrations because of how stupid we are.

Great game. One play only. Easy to remember all cards.

The background music sounds like a relaxing mix between Stardew Valley and Donkey Kong Country.

Yo it was awesome seeing you as a cameo in the Blackberry movie!
At least they got rid of the Play-doh
so basically this version relies on dead memes.
