I was about broke . scraped up 5 bucks ..I heard that Queensryche was going to play Hammerjacks in Baltimore .. The year was 1984 .. I felt like throwing in "Life's Towel " .. I walked in and there was this bar that surrounded the stage .. I had complete view overlooking from 10 feet away .. During the lead break . Geoff had been watching me that night . and kept on looking up at me and climbed the PA stack .. During this song and took my hand and stayed with me .. . I remember Chris looking at the both of us as if I was going to toss Geoff off .. and every song after Micheal would look up and smile at me .. That night changed my life .. I Took hold of the flame and became the best that I can .. This song transformed me and made me understand how hard it is to try and fail , But get up again .. Something great awaits if you Hold On
I'm 53+ and this song and Roads To Madness have more meaning to me everytime I hear them.......we r so cheated out of time ...when were 18, 21.....30 years old ....we felt invincible!!!!......I was severely injured on the job site at 41 ..... electrocuted.... almost even 'pronounced' ...it damaged my body , the fall- my spine .....and my brain......I look like I'm 30 but feel like I'm 80+ now!!!!......it destroyed so much of who I was...I was also a weekend musician in bands ....lost that to because the accident caused my genetic bipolar disorder to flare up out of nowhere - all tied to that very day!!....I don't socialize very well in person-iv become introverted to protect myself somehow.......when I was in the hospital for an extended period of time all I asked for was my walkman and some cassettes....the one that was in the walkman was The Warning .......the other cassette I listened to was Priest=Aura by Australian band The Church ....if ur not familiar with them or think they were just a pop band decades ago -please listen to this album....I am lucky to b alive ....I was there when Dark Side of The Moon was released.... possibly thegreateast album of all time!!!......but for me Priest=Aura surpasses it-it is other worldly and hypnotic .......just que up the final 3 songs on it -they play out like a trilogy.....than restart at the first song -self titled and play it thru again n again............that album has kept me alive all this time ....I Iisten to it each n everyday I have left .........b safe n healthy my kindred spirits....one day will meet on the other side if fate doesn't bring us closer on this side of the coin.....
I grew up down the street from Geoff, went to school with his little sister. The warning and queen of the Reich had such an impact . I absolutely was blown away . This band stood the test of time for sure. Geoff do me a favor and stop saying youre from Seattle. Be proud of Tacoma brother . Northenders for life 🎸🎸🎸🎙🎙🎶🎶😃
This song is the reason i love queensryche i have yet to hear a song from the original queensryche that i dont love. i can listen to this and suite sister mary (well all their albums) repeatedly n never get bored of them.
Oh, oh, Take old🔥...so take hold the flame... and you there’s 💕so beautiful it’s Geoff and this song, pleasure, give me chills🤷♀️❤️but everything to again🙏
Ride, to a place beyond our time Reach, for the edges of your mind, and you are there See, that the light will find it's way Back to a place where it will stay, make it stay. I love that part
The BEST song from QR!!!! That vibrato at the end of the highest note is simply unbelievable. I can listen to it over and over and everytime it touches me deeply. Thank you QR for this fantastic song and to GT for his superb, emotional singing. Trive
I'm going to have to partially agree. Tate uses his voice to great effect here but on "Walk in the Shadows" he uses styling and vocal technique in ways that emphasizes ceartin parts and highlights others, ad well as the opposite direction to, better than any other artist that I can think of besides perhaps Freddy Mercury (RIP Freddy, the world was a better brighter place with you here with us) and Queen in some of their work. Tate is defiantly amoung the best of the best and best ever. With the generations of today it's a good thing we have great bands that made great music, music that speaks directly to and sings to your soul and heart, because the music these current generations are making, everything from the mid to late 90s or so, is completely without heart and soul. when talking to younger people today they have no idea what I'm talking about when I describe hearing a song on the radio for the first time and you break out in goose bumps and the hairs all stand up on your arms and the back of your neck. All because the song was written so well it hit you right in the heart and soul and you could listen to it a hundred times back to back and love it the hundred and first as much as the first time. Generations raised self entitled selfish, narcistic, never having heard the word No because their parents are their "friends" and not their parents, not figures of authority. They were told they were special at everything and raised without learning about competition in sports leagues that didn't keep score and everyone got trophies for participation because everyone is a winner! The result is generations who have no heart and soul, how could they being raised in such a sheltered existance far from the reality of the uber competitive world. They couldn't write music with soul no matter how hard they try, so we get songs that sound basically the same one from the other with albums sounding the same album after album one band sounding like all the other modern bands. Its pathetic and very Sad. Maybe one day things will change and music will again be written with soul and heart, although I can't see it from here.
Brings back the decades. Still remember picking up that album. Don't understand why I usually only see the other songs on my UA-cam. Always reminded me that I made a good decision with a circuit breaker for my tweeters on my Cerwyn Vegas.
I hope the protesters in Hong Kong here this. Of course it was not intended for that, and things might not turn out well for them. But this speaks directly to that place they are in, and I wish them well. "With the air of freedom the flame grows bright". And they are the youth united! God, I wish I could do more to help them....
This is just so mind boggling. I remember the first time I heard Queensryche. It was on a late night heavy metal radio show out of Boston. They played a track "from this new band called Queens Rich". They played 'the lady wore black'. I was Blown Away!
a masterpiece. this is Geoff and QR at their best. i saw them on the Warning tour opening for Kiss at Long Beach Arena two days in a row and they destroyed them. third time at Rage for Order tour at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. Those days we're incredible.
Saw that tour in San Diego!!!! Went to Tower Records and bought the album and cassette.(for my walkman) Had all of my friends listen to it.Knew right then and there they were going to be big.
The first time I played this tune I borrowed a vhs tape of Queensryche and ran it through my bose speakers. My dad came over as this song was playing. He looked at me and said,Holy Shi@! Turn that up.
just my opinion but if you had never known of the bands that inspired these bands, like Led Zep and others... I WOULD PUT THE RYCHE AS ONE OF THE BEST LYRICAL AND MUSICAL GENIUS BANDS OF MY GENERATION, no doubt about it!!
It is a real shame that Queensryche's early albums never received the attention that the albums towards the end of their career did.Listen to this song and follow it with "Jet City Woman", and I think you'll understand what I mean.
+Todd ZT54 Silent Lucidity And Jet City Women Don't Even Make My Top 50 Queensryche Songs. And I Probably Don't Like Those Songs For Being Too Mainstream. From The L. P. Album Until Operation Mindcrime They Were As Great As Any Band Out There!! Empire Was Just Really Good Album, And Promised Land Was Just Good, And Everything After Promised Land Is Not The Queensryche I Love. I'm Getting My Queensryche Tattoo Finished As We Speak!!
yes totally agree...its much harder for a singer to maintain his voice...your voice is NOT AN INSTRUMENT and time will take its toll eventually. I don't know of too many singers after 50 that can still hold on to their range...not cool to bash them!!! you'll be there someday, and btw...Geoff bashers..have YOU EVER SANG FOR 30 YEARS ???
the problem is geoff started losing his voice in his late 20s and by 90s he developed an ugly husky voice, and started to struggle with mindcrime songs, let alone rage and warning songs the fact is geoff should've had taken better care of his voice, especially with him smoking and drinking as for the singers who still sound great in their late careers look at kiske or dickinson before he got tumor
Overuse and touring can really destroy your voice...I used to tour for years, but if you don't smoke. don't try to push anything beyond your range...its all good :)
LINDA Madden According to various sources Tate took his voice for granted didn't practise to keep it in shape. And he smokes. There are several live versions of this song on youtube where he skips the high notes.
I agree Tyler..he is just a "cover singer" like Sooo many these day. but he'll..they are all getting "up there" can't pull it off anymore...not their fault
Geoff Tate in his prime is pretty hard to top guys the new guys good but he's not Geoff I dont think anyone can match him and you can't replace a guy with pipes like these
Dame. Geoff Tate has some lunges in him . Awesome metal band, but only when Geoff was the singer I saw him in the late 1980s and in the early 2000s. Queensryche is my second favorite. The intro is pure musical emotion.
I think is is probably the most impressive vocal song by Geoff Tate for sure!!!
Agreed
