Episode 94
Bucky O'Hare is another awesome game from Konami, the developer that brought us hits like Contra and Castlevania. This time they were making a game based on a short lived animated series that feels like cross between Star Wars and DuckTales.
In the show, Bucky O'Hare, the titular green rabbit, is the captain of one of the last remaining rebel ships. The evil Toad empire seeks to colonize the rest of the "aniverse" and make other animals into slaves. Bucky and his crew - Jenny, Dead-Eye, Willy and Blinky - must fight against insane odds to bring freedom to the galaxy!
So how did this game get made, and what is it's connection with some of the best games for the Sega Genesis? in today's episode we'll find out then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* How to complete EVERY ACT of EVERY PLANET!
* The SECRET PASSWORD to activate the brutally difficult HARD MODE!
* The best way to SURVIVE the perilous shooter level!
* Where to go first? The best order for the stages!
* The best character to use for EVERY different situation!
* The SECRET of the DEATH WARPS - Skip large chunks of the game just by dying!
* How to defeat EVERY BOSS... even the TOAD AIR MARSHALL himself, AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

Back when Konami gave 100% to all of their licenses. It didn't matter if it was successful or not. Bucky only ran for one season, but Konami still treated it like gold with this amazing game, and its arcade counterpart.
Honestly with this game's quality you'd think TMNT was the knock-off.
@@StarkMaximum you don't pay attention well.
Even with obscure one-offs like _Monsters In My Pocket,_ Konami always went out with the franchise. The music was always the best part, even rivaling Capcom!
@@anthonybernero9720 He did.
@@edwardgaines6561 I still think Capcom had the best controls in their games. Whenever I booted up a game from them, the controls were usually really good.
Token Bucky speedrunner checking in. Thanks for showing love to one of my favourite games on the NES. Everyone who loves retro action platformers should check this out at least once!
Thank you!! Really cool to hear from a runner of this game, I couldn't agree more - A great game for fans of stuff like Mega Man.
Bucky...
CAPTAIN BUCKY O'Hare
Mutants and Aliens and Toads beware!
Immediately the theme song was in my head.
One of my all time NES favorites. Multiple paths and characters, a banging soundtrack, and based on one of the niche childhood cartoons I enjoyed. This was a game I rented a few times and was very happy to finally find for sale at a flea market back in the day.
And the Righteous Indignation has to be one of the coolest names for a space ship ever.
Oh wow, what a nice surprise. I absolutely adore this game and just even played it again just a few months ago! Side note, I have always appreciated how you do the side bars with all the tips and knowledge stuff, it's really cool! Super Metroid when 😏
Even though I know Metroid and Super Metroid inside and out, I still second this notion! 😁👍
Much appriciated indeed to make these kind of time consuming details.
I feel like this channel does a great job of capturing the tone of Nintendo Power and "How to Win at Nintendo Games", etc
51:17 Considering that the villains of this game are toads, it makes sense that the snakes from Battletoads are a bit willing to help the heroes out here.
Umm... if they were trying to help the Heroes instead of the Toads, why are their Mouths instant death...? 🤨
Bucky !!! Love this one!! Very fortunate to have it in the collection!! Also the OST is an absolute banger!!! Thanks for covering this !
Has become one of my favorite channels! I’m 42 years old and you’ve helped me beat games that I’ve never completed. Thanks so much and you have a full time supporter man. Thank you so much
I happen to be wearing my U Can Beat Video Games t-shirt while watching this morning!
One of my fav cartoons as a kid, and one of my NES games, too bad the series only had like 12 or 14 episodes before it was canceled. Game is pretty tough but awesome and underrated. I still have a Deadeye Duck action figure with the guns (have had it for 30 years) lol.
Put that in the retirement collection
That's the only Bucky figure I ever owned, though it was lost to time some twenty years ago. MDK 2 (on Dreamcast) made me remember that character fondly...
I am so hyped for this.
I loved the hell out of this game as a kid. Fantastic job on the history and inspiration.
You know how everybody has that one thing nobody else has heard of that you really enjoyed? Well this was that thing for me as a kid. No one I knew had ever heard of Bucky. Was starting to think I imagined it.
Same , i had pictures with my dead eye duck … if i didnt , nobody i knew remembered this
Wasn't this video amazing? It's not a huge regret per se but I remember seeing this game for rent at our local Marsh back when it first came out in 1992 and I never did rent it. I DID finally purchase the game and play it for the first time around the 1998-99 timeframe but it would have been so cool to play it right after its release. Still, the nostalgia runs deep and I adore this game to this day. One of the most underrated NES games ever (and possibly the biggest snub on IGN's Top 100 list...how is this game not in the Top 25 or at least Top 50???)
I love this game. It really sucks that it wasn't a lot of episodes because the cartoon was fire. Bucky O'hare and the righteous indignation was slept on.
These videos are filling the same need that Cornshaq used to provide with his series over a decade ago, but two years ago he disappeared.
Thank you so much for doing these.
One of my favorite games from childhood and a game that brings out so much nostalgia in me...the gameplay to the music, this is one of the best NES games period and to see you tackling it is freaking monumental..So happy to see this one.
this is one of my favorite NES games, and thats not including the main NES titles. truly a masterpiece of difficulty and fun. having to use strategy in some stages. and yes, the continues/passwords really helped me beat this game as a kid. i wish this series would make a comeback
I fully expected you to clear this and provide the groundwork on how we can follow along.
I did not expect a Mallrats reference. Well done.
oh hell yeah this is in my top 5 games on the NES. And the soundtrack is THE BEST.

they are some of the games on NES with the best music!
there are more which i don`t remember
@@jalliboy awesome list of games! Almost every Konami/Sunsoft/Capcom game could be on this list. One of the most slept on games in terms of music is Super Spy Hunter. Check out that soundtrack when you have a minute! ;)
@@tigmo55 i most certainly will😁
This channel is my new safe space from an insane world.
This game is definitely a hidden gem
top 10 nes game for me easily
have it in collection too
Never heard of Bucky O'Hare until i was very much an adult, and was kinda sad i missed this franchise. I heard there was an NES game that was actually decent but never bothered to emulate it.
Glad to finally see this game!
Your Vulpix avatar looks cool.
Unfortunately, there wasn't much of a franchise. The game was emulated; however the mine cart sections of the Yellow Planet and the mine cart area of The Toad's Mother ship was badly glitched, I had to use a password to skip past those sections.
Overall, it was one of those rare games that actually did the TV series justice... Of course that was because the game wasn't made by LJN; like so many other video game ports from TV and movies.
@@BobbyCarbonKJV LJN didn't make games. They only published them. Common misconception.
@@danbauer3669 Thank you very kindly for the clarification.
"Is that why he is Green? I thought it was because he was Irish" Gold JERRY GOLD!
One of my favorite NES games right here! Easily in my top 5! Just listened to someone else play through this earlier in the week and it reminded me how great but also how brutal this game is. Keep up the good work, UCBVG!
Bucky and Little Nemo were my two first games my parents got for me on Christmas for my NES. You have brought back so many old fond memories. Keep up the amazing work.
Lucky
I was obsessed with Bucky O'Hare at the arcade. I spent so many tokens. This was in the early 90s.
I never ran across this green rabbit as a kid, the green rabbit from my childhood was Jazz Jackrabbit.
Just came upon your channel. Very impressed with your knowledge of the game you present and also of your production values. Top notch!! Feels like I was watching an old episode of G4TV.
Maybe they WERE planning a surprise party for Bucky, but then THEY were the ones surprised! By being kidnapped.
It is really amazing to think that "TMNT" was actually a spoof or parody of the "Daredevil" franchise. "The Foot Clan" being a parody of "Daredevil's" the Hand. With the success of TMNT there came spoofs of it and you ended up with an inception with spoofs upon spoofs.
Three additional comics that spoofed TMNT were "Adolescent Radioactive Black Belt Hamsters", "Hamster Vice", and arguably the most fun to say... "The Preteen Dirty Gene Kung Fu Kangaroos".. I love the content as always! Keep up the amazing work!!! Have a great day!!!
Wow! That's like travelling at 90's. I spent many hours in this game. Indeed my greatest achievement is defeating this game without losing any lives.
On the other hand this vídeo amazed me with the secret password so as to make the game almost impossible.
Thanks for the vídeo, I really enjoyed it!
I requested this a while back and I'm glad to see it come to fruition 😁 Me and my daughter have been trying to beat this for a long time.
as a kid, i liked the cartoon, found the nes game and took it home, it was fun, i liked it, wish i hanged on to it.
i like watching the pup grow up
One if the best ever It's a masterpiece I just paid my friend to fix a 2007 laptop with windows 98 on it...for perfect nes emulator pc JUST for this game!
Masterfully crafted walkthrough on one of NES's best games period
They boy can play! May you receive wealth for the entertainment you provide!
Best soundtrack on the NES, and the pinnacle of the 8 bit era. This was the first game I ever playd on the NES in 95, and witch I play to this day, absolute classic.
Such a great game for the NES, one of the best licensed games ever made - thank you for the video. Also, kudos for the Weird Al lyric towards the end
I find the sentence "possessed willy" hilarious and I'm not ashamed...
Aw man, I've been wanting this game for a long time.. too damn expensive.
It works just fine on the NES mini. Incidentally, so do Game Genie codes! Hint hint.
This is the latest "too expensive" game I've added to my NES collection. $250CDN. Not so bad if you have a job and retro games is an important hobby to you. Emulation can be cheap as free, though.
This games soundtrack is so memorable, the salvage chute music goes hard, I'm glad you did a video on this game, def one of my all time favourites
This game was famous to have the Hard Mode activated by default on most multi-carts due to anti-piracy measures, and while is possible to beat the game, you have to literally learn every single layout and pattern to deal with the 1-hit KO rule of Hard Mode
I have experience with that. This don't stop me to try to complete it but it take years of tries and of course passwords help with that. Game was good enough.
I spent many hours as a youth playing this game, along with willow.
Man, when I was a kid I had like the entire set of Bucky O'Hare toys. They must have been at a steep discount because we certainly did not have buying-an-entire-line-of-toys-at-full-retail-price type of money. I loved them so much. I especially loved the Toadborg guy because he had weird articulation and Dead Eye Duck because he had extra arms lol.
I only ever caught the show like once or twice but I also remember enjoying it and wanting to watch more. If I had known there was an NES game back then, I would have made it my mission to acquire it.
I never knew it existed until like 2005 and when I tried it, I couldn't do anything with it instantly so I kinda just quit. I might make it a point to give this one another go now.
That toyline will stand as an example to others that one must have merchandise of the most popular characters from the source material ready at launch. The absence of First Mate Jenny figures may have been their downfall.
Just another wonderful video! You literally had a perfect run in a razor tough game! Well done!! :) It was so much fun watching your playthrough as I've never really seen anyone else play this vastly underrated game. Bucky O'Hare is without a doubt EASILY in the Top 100 NES games of all-time and it might even be a Top 25 game IMO. The gameplay is fantastic with a nice blend of variety and strategy thanks to you having five characters to choose from. The challenge is high but fair and the soundtrack is outstanding! I'll never forget having just a great big smile when I fired up the game for the first time and chose the Green Planet. The music is SO good! You're the best my friend. Thanks again for another fun and wonderful video!
I salute you for the Weird Al lyrics near the end, sir. Well played! Pun definitely intended.😊
"It's a schooner".... lmao excellent "Mallratz" shoutout 😂
Such an awesome game and short lived cartoon. I was the prime age for Bucky O'Hare, had all the toys, etc. Good memories.
The cell joke was hilarious. I wonder how many people got that
You play all the best games. Truly legendary content. Good dog
this was one of my favorite games growing up, I got really good at it.
Lol the Bucky series of video games are surprisingly well done. The entire series is underrated really.
Thank you so much. Trying to beat KOMPLEX without the safe spot and after continuing so your health bar isn't maxed is BRUTAL - this was so much easier.
I take a drink every time he says "instant death".
If there was ever a video that needed to be made for a very hard NES game, it was this one. This game is a hidden gem, but it is also very hard. Be lucky to make it past the first level, unless you have played a lot of Mega Man games.
Funny, but I played this game before MM series, but I have bottleg version which makes it hard version by default, and this is when you can't past 1 level so easily.
Started playing some old games again and I went back to your TMNT video, man it’s amazing how far you’ve come. Not that it wasn’t good but hard to believe it’s the same channel!!!
The music during that escape sequence is crazy good.
Wow I had a good sleep-in today, yay for Sundays!!! Now to make Brunch, kick back in my comfy chair and enjoy while I have my latest nostalgia trip to my childhood.
My personal favorite NES game. Beating it on hard mode is my personal greatest gaming achievement.
I'm so excited for this! Bucky O'Hare was always one of my favorite to play
Waking up Saturday mornings and seeing my subscribed alert for this channel is SO great! Your reviews and plays are the best.
You can really tell he loves video games, and I love his enthusiasm.
"wild west cowboys of moo mesa" OH. MY. GOODNESS! I've been trying to remember the name of this show for a decade!
Tip: On the Red Planet, when you get to the part with the green toad boulder - 20:50 - jump on it with Bucky, switch to Blinky, crouch and ride until the end of the stage.
You can also one phase the Toad Tank boss on Yellow Planet with Jenny's hairball attack.
You are always amazing at these things. I had this game and beat it several times, and I still never could go this smooth through it. You must have either incredible patience or The Wizard levels of video game talent to pull this off and make it look so smooth.
I'd like to suggest a few games for you to play, but one of them is terrible, though the other two could make for a short video if you needed a quick one. Shatterhand for the NES and Cybernator for the SNES. Not saying you need to do them by any means, but might be worth looking into as I don't think I know a single person whose ever heard of Cybernator.
Loved this game as a kid. Of all the things getting a do over these days Bucky O'Hare should be one of them. They just didn't get a fair shake at the time. Still hoping for a Bucky O'Hare, Jazz Jackrabbit, and Archie's version of Sonic crossover. I can dream. 😂
I remember this show from when I was a kid. Never played this game, but this looks extremely impressive for a original NES title.
I imagine once the mind control goes away there's a possibility the toads are going to look around, see their massive military infrastructure and how successful it's been at subjugating the aniverse and just decide to keep rolling with it.
Its surprising this series has never got a reboot. It has a better chance of standing out now.
Even with this well thought out pro guide, this game will still kick your butt.
I played this game lots as a kid back in the 90's. Never could beat the end game boss though lol. Now I know how and don't have the game anymore.lol.
Funny coincidence that the One eyed wonder is the one that can get through those narrow openings.
Excellent video, very well done as always. I never played this game as a kid, kinda wish I would have, looks awesome. Thanks for posting 👍🏼😁🇺🇸
This cartoon was damn popular for awhile when I was a kid. Great upload!
Despite its difficulty, I absolutely _adore_ this game. Everything about it just feels really solid. It's one of those NES games I go back to over and over again every few months to replay.
The music on the Red Planet slaps so hard.
Was not expecting a Mallrats reference!
i loved the heck out of this game when i was a kid. it was soulcrushingly hard, but it was so much fun
I'm surprised to see that this game really exists. I vaguely remember watching someone play it when I was really young, and it felt like it was one of those misremembered games that a fever dream whipped up. I'll have to put this on my steam deck.
Man, what a blast from the past. I think I actually beat this game as a kid. Took A LOT of effort though.
The hanging "eggs" @ 15:23 remind me of megaman and bubble bobble.
love this game, play it alot as a kid. beat it many times... still the best game now.
Not only one of the best games for the NES, but one of the best soundtracks.
They've got more fur than any turtle ever had
Awesome game this week. PLEASE for the love of god dust off your 64. thank you. Please keep up the excellent care and attention you put into every video. Thank you for going through all these games. You've actually help me beat some games i wouldn't of otherwise.
As a kid my older brother had a bucky O'Hare toy, I had no idea what it was from but I was oddly fascinated by the green bunny in a red space suit.
Its amazing how there is no studdering with so much going on in the screen.
Thanks again for helping me beat yet another NES game!!!!!!
alright that yellow planet joke really caught me off guard
I was like "wait a minute, Uranus isn't yell---- oh" followed by what I can only describe as one of those chuckles that you hear from mobsters in movies after a tense situation
There was also a Bucky O'Hare arcade game as well. Very good Beat 'Em Up game.
I love the boss music. one of the best soundtracks.
Yes! Been waiting on this one! Loved the cartoon when I was growing up
I purchased this game along time ago at a flea market. Flea markets had alot of old games. Bucky o hare was released later in Nintendo's life span so the graphics are good for that era.
I would at least somewhat disagree with Samurai Pizza Cats being a result of TMNT. The original anime I don't believe was a result of TMNT's popularity, but the English dub may have been created because of it. I wonder if Bucky O'Hare had been more popular whether Konami would have ported the arcade game to home consoles.
I thought it was because of tmnts whole mutant animal human hybrid characters
@@renesalinas1029 Considering that TMNT wasn't as popular in Japan as it was over here, I'm doubtful it was the reason for its creation. The success of TMNT over here *may* be the reason it was dubbed into English, though.
What about the tiger sharks
Dinosaucers was the same year as TMNT, but I don’t think it came about as a copycat.
@@RT81775 Maybe. It is possible that it was influenced by the original Mirage comic books, but I don't really know.
I never played the game, but I watched all of those cartoons. Samurai Pizza Cats was awesome, but Moo Mesa was my favorite. I hope you do a run through of Tail Spin.
Never played the game but my brothers loved Bucky O’Hare
Wow! I can still hear the cartoon theme song in my head. Thank you!! #memoryunlocked
One of my favorite NES game…By one of my favorite content creator…Awesome video!
I remember the bucky arcade game that was fun
I saw you coming in to the final level going over 60 lives, really thought you were going to arrange it so you ended with 69 lives and it was going to be another joke. Ah well, can't get them all. Excellent vid as always! Thanks for the nostalgia!
I always enjoy your videos I actually just beat Faxanadu with your help now I'm stuck on Shatterhand hopefully thats in the mix
I've been working on this gem of a game for a while now. How anyone could beat it without an emulator is beyond me. Lots of fun and I'm very close to beating it.
Well, I beat it on console with bootleg version that transform it into 1-KO hard version. This takes years and password make it easier to return to it later. Emulator introduce me with Megaman series.
