  • The ESFP personality type - not everybody identifies with this type code, but many people who consistently receive ENFP, INFP and INFJ type results from online tests may in fact be cognitive ESFPs.
This video discards the misleading E-S-F-P dichotomies, and focuses instead on the cognitive functions in order to give you 5 clear signs you're not an ESFP.

    About me:
Hi, I'm Harry, and I'm intensely passionate about personality typing and self-development - so much so that I have created my own Jung-inspired system, taking a more high-resolution look at the factors making up personality.
Through Cognitive Personality Theory I examine the underlying mechanisms behind cognition, and the means through which a single type can have limitless individual variation - I believe type itself is just a set of cognitive predispositions that can according to the needs of the situation be overcome.
I don't believe any type is limited in what they can achieve, but have noticed sensationalist attitudes and internet trends propagating a culture in which type-development is actively discouraged in favour of conforming to simplistic archetypes. Through CPT I hope to dispel various myths and oversimplifications of what constitutes personality type, and along the way encourage a healthier attitude towards type that allows a person to become not who they are told they are, but rather who they want to be.

Thank you for this detailed and more comprehensive definition of the ESFP. I struggled with finding my type as I related more with definitions of the "intuitive" types, since I pick up information fairly quickly and rather unconsciously. I was mistyped as *NFP before finally settling on ESFP. The ESFP stereotypes of the party animal didn't resonate - though I do enjoy a good party from time to time! - but I find this more nuanced definition provided by you, Joyce Meng, and others to really shed light on my cognitive processes. Indeed, a "sensing" type can be more "intuitive" in many respects than is typically given them credit! Thank you!!

My stepfather scored as ESFP, and he has ADHD. He's usually hyperfixating on something or seeking some form of stimuli. But socially he's actually rather shy. He can be quite uncomfortable in social situations he's new to, but he can adapt if there's some sort of activity he enjoys. Cooking and eating, for example. Music as well- he's a self-taught musician. Learned by ear, doesn't know how to read music, and I'm sure he has perfect pitch. Genuinely one of the best people I know. He's treated me so much better than either of my parents have. Being an INTP I get overwhelmed by how active and loud he can be sometimes, but I appreciate his nature nevertheless. The world would be so boring without people like him.

Yessssssssssssss! I was already mostly certain of my type, but I’ve been “certain” a few times with INTP and ESTP, so this confirms it! My favorite parts were about how Ni-Fi sneaks up on ESFPs with revelations they don’t necessarily see the source of, which is astonishingly accurate, along with how the ESFP thought process (referring to using Ti) is often experienced as a hum. Everything was accurate, but those little details really got me. I also liked how you addressed the ESFP stereotypes. I thought I was an introvert for years and get overwhelmed in busy places, so that among other things made it quite a journey typing myself. Do you have ESFP friends you got data from or is this a result of your internal framework for CPT? Insightful and accurate! Thank you :D

This video is soooo me it doesn't even make sense! I think I truly am ESFP (you should do ESTP next just so I can be sure)
I've switched around from so many ExFx and even xNTP because I just thought party animal didn't really fit me. "I can quickly understand how things work! I can be manipulative (rarely tho) and adapt to the social atmosphere, and generally always follow what feels authentic to me! (I've gotten many compliments on people seeing my intense passion for certain things and my overall "honest" ways, even though they're practically second nature for me!)
Nope, the way you've explained here makes it so much less doubt-able for me!
I DO admire sophisticated things! It's a "these details, it's function, this is quite cool to simply admire" thing!
And intense focus on external things? Don't get me started! Learning to solve a Rubix cube, building the components of a desktop from scarp parts (I don't really like coding tho, not very stimulating), playing Need For Speed, gardening, storm-tracking and of course nature photography, all these things are external things I focused intensely on for months and even years as I grew in teen years!
The logic thing is also very true, while my logic can be quite extensive in things I understand well, MANY times I simply use tutorials and search "best ways to do XYZ" or "best XYZ." My logic is indeed also driven by Fi, many times unconsciously. It is at times inconsistent, and I am called out by ENTJ I know for inconsistent logic during debates as well as many others in general for "small things that don't add up logically" (I can barely explain how I got there myself). 😂
Everyone around me says my type couldn't be more obvious despite my doubt, but now I see they're correct, just not for the stereotypical reasons! Thank you so much good sir!! 🙏🏾

I love how Ni sneaks in and helps Fi fill the void. It's like the Ni vision chooses me and I lock onto it, even getting somewhat obsessive over the concept, while some of the Se aspects of it might change over time. However when applying Se- Te in the moment to something I'm passionate about, it can make things super perfectionistic on occasion because the Ni in the background pictured it a certain way. This can apply even to short term things such as cooking if I lock onto it enough. Leaving a mess strewn around, but focusing on the main thing which is the food itself, steamrolling through to the end result. Without the Fi- Ni I can become very directionless, and resort to a divergent state scrolling the internet waiting for something to pop out at me to strike my interest.
I noticed Ni dialogue can often manifest in thinking of all the things I could say next to someone, in a one-to-one manner which corrolates with something I'm trying to get across/express, or something I'm trying to work towards.

I failed Algebra twice because although I often knew the correct answers to the problems I could not “show my work”.

I've noticed in xSxP types in general the ability to enjoy, fight through, and actively seek out sensory challenges for their own sake. This actually has a lot of benifit, because even the more stereotypically slacker "stoner" Se type demonstrates this "moment by moment" adaptiveness, and its amazing to watch this sensorily reactive state unfold, especially as someome who hates, or at least prefers control over, new sensory input and experiences. Thisbsi even noticable to a lesser extent from ky observation in Ne doms end extroversion in general, such as my ENTP brother, yet Se concious types just seem to be so adept at plowing through sensory input of any kind regardless of stimulation problems, or at least extroverted varieties.

Hey Harry, just wanted to let you know I'm about halfway through your book and really enjoying it. Would highly recommend it to anyone (especially if you find it hard to keep up with words like convergent, divergent, plethoric, etc. Harry has some great videos on that stuff but I've found it a lot easier reading a paragraph over and over to solidify a concept). I might be a rarity but I never thought I might be an INFJ until your explanation of the INFJ cognitive stack. I'm not married to being that type (largely thanks to how you talk about the fluidity of cognition) and am just happy to observe my cognitive functions and let the type flow organically out of that.
I did have a couple of notes that you might find helpful.
    1. You might want to consider using a broader scope of types when giving examples of the interactions of functions as you normally use yourself as a reference. This is helpful for *me* 'cause I identify strongly with the INFJ stack, but I imagine it would be more helpful to use a broader range of types. Kind of like how it can help when demonstrating musical concepts by not always using the C major scale. (Obviously this suggestion doesn't apply to videos like this. I just wanted to post it on your most recent video)
    2. Would love if the contents page of your book was set up (atm it has a contents page but no hyperlinked navigation so you have to manually go to the page you want).
    3. Would also love it to be readable on Kindle. Currently, if I try and download it on my kindle it says that my device doesn't support the format which hasn't happened to me before.
    4. I understand your hesitance in using metaphor and behavioural examples in type descriptions and that CPT emerges in resistance to stuff like that. However, I think it could help to use some examples. For instance, I understand convergence and divergence now. However, I'd love some brief example of, say, what it looks like to use Te convergently. Not to ascertain anyone's type behaviourly, but to have more of an idea of the "sort of thing" it is to convergently utilise Te."
But overall, loving your work! I hope you're able to keep doing this youtube stuff with the fuzzy job climate and all :). I'm 26 and I've dabbled into this stuff since I was 13, always ending up extremely frustrated by the inability of anyone to clearly explain these concepts (and thus giving up). Your intentional neglect of behavioural descriptions was *exactly* what I never knew I needed!

Finally, thank you. I now realize, that I am an Esfp. They say Zander off of Buffy the vampire slayer is an Enfp. Also Dawn Buffy’s sister is too. They have the same kind of sense of humor. And as you have already stated, that Enfps are actually introverts. And I certainly am never mistaken for an introvert. Although I do tend to need some time with my thoughts like an Infj. Your insight is right on amazing, because when I had first taken the mbti test. I got on Infj as a result. And after that, I kept getting that as a result repetitively. Eventually I realized that I am more of an extrovert. I hate too much Fe it drains me. Fe in little bursts, in an energetic environment can be fun though. I guess I thought that I was an Enfp mainly because of the fact that I am witty. And I believed the stereotypes of Esfp. So then I thought, no way that doesn’t even come close to me. The list for the reasons, that I didn’t relate to the stereotypes of Esfp’s goes as this. They need to be the center of attention. No thank you, I like self expression, but too much attention makes me cranky. They are self absorbed. How can I be, when I am worried about strays? And when I feel bad if someone accidentally gets excluded, who didn’t deserve it. They are a natural comedian. I am not a comedian, but I am quite witty. Yet I still can’t understand how my wit works. And when I am dealing with something. I then desire to be alone, but my humor still pops out naturally. I don’t understand why or how this works. Because this can also occur at such delicate times. And it doesn’t ever match up to my emotional state at the time either. Ok, back to the list. I don’t really care to much about fashion. I am not a class clown. I am not dingy, or a dumb blonde, etc. I am very happy to finally know my personality type. That’s what I get for taking the free test. An identity crisis. Lol 😂. Can you explain the Esfp’s possible sense of humor? People always find me charming, and I don’t quite get it. I went through a lot in my life. And alot of people have, but that doesn’t make my loses, and traumatic experiences any less valid. One day a shall write a book on my experiences. But for now I am in a healing process. And I am glad to say that I have truly come along way. Wow, 😯 Your like the Albert Einstein of the cognitive functions. Sorry It’s like 3:00am so I am exhausted. But I stumbled on your video, because of course I was also wired. I get energized by new researches.
Even when I am sleepy, It doesn’t matter I must investigate. I just can’t resist new insights. Which come to think of it; is another reason, that I believed that I was an Enfp. Ok I keep going off on my perfectionistic tangents. Time to get some rest. One more thing do you think that I have high Ne? I ask this because my thoughts jump from one idea to another, when I am talking. It’s like this thing, connects to this thing, connects to this thing. Maybe it could be that I have high Te sort of like an Enfp. Plus others have said, that Enfps and Esfp’s have similar interactive styles at times. So I don’t know the answer to this puzzling question. But I would like to know. Sorry my great grandfather was a district attorney, so I think that explains some of my inherited thinking/ processing information. And taking after this particular great grandfather is one of the very reasons I ever got involved with the mbti. I just want to understand my thinking better, which in turn will help me understand me better. I also memorize words and phrases without fully understanding them. And they like to come out when I am talking or writing. What is that all about? And many people have told me throughout my life; that I ask questions, like I am questioning them like a lawyer. For instance all of my friends say, that I will ask the same question trying to get a particular answer. I don't know if this really applies to what you said, but I have this thing that I long thought was to do with ADHD where I'll obsessively pursue a goal for months at a time, sometimes to the point of burnout. Sometimes I lose sight of why I was pursuing it in the first place and it's almost like I've become so focused on it, it's hard to focus on anything else. I will end up neglecting other things and have struggled in life, in general, with splitting my attention significantly in what I'm pursuing unless I absolutely have to. But I'm pretty sure it's not something I've heard repeated in other people with ADHD commonly... hyperfocusing in the short-term sure, but not in the longer-term kind of focus I get into. Now I wonder if it's more readily explained as a difference in personality type, as the kind of ESFP cognition you're describing. Not that I don't have ADHD too (pretty sure I do) but for this particular thing, the ADHD may only exacerbate it, make it more extreme, not create it. Idk, something like that.
Also, I thrive on that energy of pursuing goals in such a way with a narrow focus, it gives me life when I feel like I can do it without being disrupted by a million little concerns and in retrospect, I think that's why when I was in college and after a lot of trial and error of the process, found my personalized approach that worked best, I started enjoying it quite a bit. I was able to look forward to the future, feeling confident it would work out, and thrive on the process at the same time. Unfortunately, my sight of the future was poor and so in turn was my preparation for it after college, but that's a long, personal story. :)

Hi! This isn't really related to the video but I was wondering if being able to wire your brain to recognize certain phrases is related to a cognitive function? Like for example when people are having a conversation near me and I hear someone say my name, I immediately snap to attention even if I was completely zoned out before and not hearing anything they're saying, and when I'm scrolling down social media and scanning long blocks of text my eyes latch on to any mention of me (by my internet name). This starts happening very quickly after people start referring to me by a new nickname or something. And I do it with my friends' names too to a lesser extent.
I know it probably isn't related to mbti but I just wanted to ask lol. and maybe everyone's brains are like this so I just look dumb asking this...

Went into this thinking maybe this is my brother? Hm, not sure. Is it me? Nah.
Ooh, my coworker. Se-Te instant reaction as well as needing external stimuli almost constantly. I really admire the ability to see or notice something and immediately react to it, something I’m rarely able to access myself, unless I can disengage my conscious mind. That is to say, when I can forget about my internal self and fully engage with the physical environment; when I can turn off the brain, so to speak, and have the body be it’s own entity, reacting without conscious prompting. It can be very hard and very scary to do, relinquishing control like that, but also very rewarding. (This happened particularly in regards to music where I’d be accused of being slow because I kept "thinking too much.")
That said, in a stressful environment where everything has to happen at the snap of a finger I freeze up unless I know exactly what to do. And I mean EXACTLY. Either through previous experience or careful, accurate instructions. This is something that has followed me since I was a child. Either instruct me like you’re coding a computer program, or leave me alone, literally, so I can think my way through it without feeling like someone's peering over my shoulder ready to point out all the mistakes I’m making. "I know my Te is weak and this method of preparing vegetables is inefficient. If you were gonna tell me from the start you should have done so already. Now leave me alone and I’ll improve it next time."
The working theory is that I’m ISFP, but I don’t know. I realized just now, that my sense of insecurity and/or inadequacy seems to stem from a lack of a proficient big-picture overview, where I’m so focused on the details I lose track of them. Many of my mistakes tend to be of the kind that could have been easily avoided if one just took a step back. Sometimes I’m even aware that I’m about to make a certain mistake, like, some part of me will be going, "psst, you should probably do it this way, otherwise this thing will happen," and the rest of me is just, "I know, I know," and then does it how I originally planned anyway, and the result is just like that warning voice predicted.
And then I feel stupid. Which generally makes it worse.
I’m really curious if you have any thoughts on this. Does this seem like something that could happen to a given type or combination of functions? Does this insecurity seem like a low Te thing or have I completely misunderstood?
    Hope it’s not a bother.
As always, love the video. Take care and cheers.

If spatial awareness is more influenced by Te than Se, why are INTPs so commonly associated with clumsiness, while ISFJs are not?

In which case, why doesn't the INTP make up for it with their Te dip?

    • @aknkna7246
      @aknkna7246 3 роки тому

    • @CognitivePersonalityTheory
      @CognitivePersonalityTheory  3 роки тому +4

Indeed an Ne perception of reality allows for greater spatial awareness, though I still find ISFJs can have comparable blindness to the object to INFJs. Spatial awareness is the sum of many functions combined and rendering objects tangible *does* play a role, but recognising the tangible as an object in the first place (Te) is more important.
Introverts in general can be clumsy owing to a detachment from external reality, which tends to only be circumvented by a Te authority, hence why ISTJs and INTJs will report higher (albeit not invariably) in spatial attunement. I would correlate Se *less* with spacial awareness than Te simply because it has the capacity to focus on one tangible value at the expense of all others, whereas a Te-centric cognition tends to keep both dissociation and blindness (both Ne and Se derived) in check.
It is always tricky to confine such things to a single function, but I find Te, on the whole, seems to play a greater role in this phenomena than Se, which can actually be a *cause* of spatial lapse.

Harry it's interesting how we reach similar conclusions. I was thinking this week about the difference between extroversion and introversion and I have narrowed it down to the following:
Extroversion= external or surface properties of objects
    Introversion= inner properties of objects
The extroverted style of thinking is filled with observations of external properties, but those do not converge to one point or quality, similarity, etc, which would denote introversion.
The extroverted style of thinking is more fluid as it can readily find data in the real world to support it.
While the introverted style of thinking is more slow in a way. It takes time to get a common quality or property from all of those external manifestations presented.
Also, I'm not ENTJ or ESTJ. I can do Ti and Ni better than an extrovert! An extrovert isn't even able to stay in this state for long because it will default to his extroversion gravitational pull.
Final judgment. We are both either INTJs or INTPs. But in order to came to such insights it requires more observations of the external Te than an INFJ could do with Te PoLR.
Your another problem, on the other hand, is your lack of the result or impact of that information or framework that resides in Se.
Also, you don't test your hypothesis as much to see if they are accurate, as long as they fit within your framework.
I, on the other hand, I see both the internal and the external aspect as one. And as such, I see that both are needed in order to validate a conclusion. Because if the main category or the general is not validated by the specific, then how can I know that the general or main category is defined correctly if it doesn't have effects or impact in reality itself Se?
PS: All of this describes my dual friend pretty well.

      Very cool!
Don't underestimate individuation, however - in order to enter this field I had to become very adept at testing my hypothesis via Te.

    • @novaimperialis
      @novaimperialis 3 роки тому

@@CognitivePersonalityTheory Harry, I agree that individuation can change things a lot. But the manner in which you use your less conscious functions would still be through your domminant ones.
I actually think that there's no quote on quote "PoLR" function. Only that we constrain ourselves by thinking in those areas that we are good in and we filter the other areas using our confident one's.
As such, I think that I have seen some use of my Fe PoLR. I get really nervous when I need to open up and when I don't see the external to accomate for this, or if my internal Fi is not comfy.
Then I start to became awkward and if I don't concentrate myself on a subject that I know, I either keep silently awkward or I try to use "distractions" to hide my insecurities by looking the other way around or looking at my phone so that it can feel like I do something and that I don't appear awkward because I'm in front of my crush, for example.
And I get better when I'm in a formal setting. I can communicate better.
With guys, for example, I can let my real self out with no fear as I don't feel criticized or I keep formal and I can navigate better.
But with girls is like I forget my mother's tongue. That's when I have to deal in real time. When I'm texting I can organize my thoughts and plan my jokes better. But in the field, is real pain for me.
I also discovered that with thinking oriented or preference girls, I can communicate easier than with feeling related one's.
The same for guys it seems. I especially get along with ENTPs. We get each other very quick at the intellectual level and we can also talk about emotions as in a controlled environment where we can use our critical thinking to defuse them.
So it seems that overall, girls have a more gravitational pull towards emotions, and thus it is hard for me to communicate because I don't know what I'm supposed to communicate, while guys are a little more oriented toward common sense. So that's why I don't get along so well with girls as long as they are not thinking preference or at least a non judging feeler.
Although I would prefer the feeler if is not fake because thinking girls only feed my intellectual curiosity but not my desire for closeness and vulnerability. While feeling girls feel my desire for closeness and vulnerability, but then I figure out that they actually don't care and they did everything out of being polite or by their cognitive processes, but not that they make the decision consciously.
Te guy= So how are you doing today?
Fe girl= I'm feeling great as I have seen this amazing picture of this cat. How do you feel? Do you feel this fuzzy feeling of wonder when you see a cat as I do?
Te guy: Amazing. I'm happy that you feel great. So anyway, about the logical truth or objective truth. You see, here we have my representation of how I think that deductive and inductive reasoning works.
You have the upper pyramid which is the inductive thinking and the lower pyramid which is deductive thinking. Why this arrangement? Because you see, inductive thinking starts from the conclusion. So it would make sense that the tip of the pyramid is the conclusion as it is narrow as it.
While the base is the deductive thinking which builds using premises until it reaches that point.
Fe girl: What does this have anything to do with the feeling of amazement that I was talking about?
Te guy: You see? I think that the upper part of the pyramid represents the ideal of a thing. So in this instance, love is the ideal, but then you need to have the base also which you gather through experience. Once you start building the base, you can then see how all of those experiences, premises, or manifestations, all converge to one point, or a definitive characteristic that they all have in common. That, is love. I get the feeling of amazement when I'm in such a process because I see how everything starts fitting and that creates internal joy for me. So objective truth creates joy for me as the process somehow reaches feelings as well. Then what is love? I think that it is the expression of your own positive intentions towards the other by having reached those conclusions or ideals yourself through introspection and then those fuzzy feelings of amazement when reaching such conclusions make you to want to share them to the other so that he can feel the same positive way as you by reaching those ideals or conclusions as you did. In short, wanting the best for the other. So it's about having positive intentions for the other and wanting to make those ideals real for the other. So does your way of expressing love or care because I can see how your Fe or external harmony is concerned to finding the result by taking the emotional cues into account and converging them under one Ti framework. While for me I'm concerned for the process of how I reached the conclusions Te and I feel inadequate to express those conclusions without actually expressing the mode that I reached them so that they can be valid and feel authentic and not fake Fi.
We both try to take those observations in the different realms that we operate in and the conclusions that we form based on those, to make us to use those processes not only for ourselves but for the other as well. So in essence, we became grateful for the aspects of reality that we take part in, and then we try to make others to see the value of those aspects of reality as well so that they can benefit from them as well.
The problem? I can't state directly how I feel about an emotional stimuli or act on it without rationalizing it first and caming to an Fi conclusion based on it.
The rationalization part I can do in the moment and I can trace the rationale behind why I feel a certain way. But in order to justify acting on it, I need a lot of introspection and even more rationalizations not to justify the validity of the feeling, but for the validity of how can I integrate it in my internal thinking framework not only as an ideal that is irrational, but something that actually makes sense and that will bring me the closure of the thinking vs feeling dichotomy which is needed in attaining homeostasis.
The problem with love and affection for me is that it loses it's meaning as I divide it to much and I think it only in terms of what's mechanistically true and this hurts me. Because I want love to be authentic. Even if there are chemical or mechanistical trigger but then it seems like everything is only chemical reactions that the other fools himself into believing that are his feelings, when in fact the attraction criterias are already programmed in him. That's why I try to make sense of it and reconcile the feeling vs thinking dichotomy because I think that both are equal and have value.
So Te= external or surface properties or effects of phenomena
Fi= the relation to the phenomen itself or to it's cause?
Ti= internal definitory or absolute properties of the phenomen cause or it's trigger?
Fe= external manifestation of the phenomena or manifestation itself?
PS: The example given is only a hypothetical example of how my brain would function in such a circumstance. I can't reach this stage with a real girl because I will feel awkward and or I won't feel the connection because it wouldn't understand what this means.

I admire a person who's hardworking and kind
But I myself suck at working hard
    I suck with details
I care more about some else's happiness more than mine
