    I am an INFP, but everyone says I am an ENFP due to how social and energetic I can seem when they meet me.
    But I think you really sum it up, when you talk about the weighing up of ideas. I find I am constantly overthinking in a very nuanced way, even in a social way, my bestfriend actually finds it frustrating because she wants to complain about someone or something ...but then I find I approach it from like 7 different ways and conclude about a million different things that show that maybe their opinion isn't holistic and isn't the only way to look at it.

      He's informed by the source material, and less prone to the formation of wild personal theories. He understands that the way we seem on the surface is not necessarily the way we function underneath the surface. These alone seem to set him above his competitors on youtube, which is sort of like a no-mans land without gatekeepers.

      INFP here: I agree with these comments. I need to go back and review the beginning materials to see how Harry got here, but it’s not just spot-on, but a new sense of freedom thatI haven’t felt since my discovery of MBTI. I felt so limited within a stereotype that didn’t ring entirely true but in ways I couldn’t put a finger on.

    Wow this is so on point! ENFP being more political whereas INFP might be more philosophical. Have definitely experienced those ENFP burnouts when getting too carried away in seeking new experiences. And having emotions start to overflow where I wasn't aware of them before. And the Ti being quite potent, trying to rationalize your own feelings and opinions. This is so much more useful than pretty much anything I've read before about mbti.

    This was another amazing video. I can't speak for the other types, but as an INFP, I can say that your videos are by far the most accurate of any on UA-cam. Everything you say is completely spot on and when watching your videos, I sometimes realise things about myself that I wasn't even consciously aware of. I'm going to have to buy the CPT Book and Patreon you at some point because it's sad to see you go unheard relative to some of the larger (and usually mediocre) MBTI channels out there.

It can get very frustrating to say the least, but I do think that overtime of dabbling with all the many things we stumble upon and then also really understanding how to balance our function stack - we can “get things finished” (Lol) to a pretty high level...

    I truly wish I could feel "settled" about my type. After being pretty comfortable with the ENFP typing you gave me, I was thrown into confusion again by a closer examination of the ENFP and INFP descriptions in your eBook (ENFP fits quite well, but INFP fits even better). I have watched this video several times, hoping to arrive at a resolution, but I am still puzzling. I am not one to "introduce chaos" or jump from interest to interest. While I am both industrious and perfectionistic, I would say the perfectionistic wins out. Not sure where to go from here to better understand.

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  4 роки тому +21

      Hey Shawna, honestly type descriptions only go so far, even those in the eBook. Your employment of Te seems altogether too confident, and I honestly have a lot of difficulty seeing you as an Fi-dominant.
      INFPs and ENFPs both jump from interest to interest, and if you say perfectionism is more of a constant then the secondary type of ISTJ may be more apt. I am 100% your functions are Ne-Te and Si-Fi, but should my primary conclusion of ENFP not fully resonate I would advice exploring the ESTJ and ISTJ as well as the INFP - all have the same functions :)

But now I'm just .... doing community college and feeling paralyzed by all the options I have and being so scared to commit to any because if I do then I might ruin my future, and therefore stagnating in the process and having a hard time focusing on an actual long-term goal. I thought I was an ENFP because of how social and energetic I can be (I’ve been talkative since my childhood, a compulsive quality of mine that I’ve always hated, but struggled to control). What really struck me and made me consider INFP is the use of Si and my need for order. When I was younger, I was homeschooled, and desperately I needed deadlines. I wanted to know how much schoolwork I needed to do a day, when I should be taking a test, etc., but my mom never orchestrated that or put it together for me. I was utterly lost during school and found it very difficult to focus or have motivation. I didn’t know how much work was enough and it stressed me out because it never felt like enough. I’m also far more content with conformity when it comes to jobs and things like that. Another thing is that I like to be as prepared as possible for things. I like to know every single detail so I can be prepared for every possibility (obviously this isn’t possible in most situations). I love to be prepared more than anything because I hate making mistakes. They’re devastating. I ask a lot of questions to make sure things are “right” and my dad is constantly telling me “you’re overthinking it”, lmao.
    Another thing that struck me was how ENFPs don’t adapt their identity to others, maintaining a sense of self. I’ve dabbled in Enneagram for quite a while now, and I’m a 9. I’ve seen how I “merge” (a term used to define how 9s adopt the behaviors, opinions, and feelings of others) with others, to the point of being lost my entire life and lacking in direction. I lack a stable sense of self and can’t control my ability to “take on” the perspective of another. Sometimes it’s overwhelming, especially when someone is very critical, mean, or talking about something triggering.
    Also another really cool thing that just popped into my head, how you mentioned how INFPs don’t like to close themselves off to possibilities. I’ve never been able to answer the question “what do you want to do when you grow up?”. My dad used to get pretty upset with me and I felt pressured to figure it out so soon.
    I’m very passive and I listen more than I talk about myself or my feelings. I thought I was an ENFP so I went and sought new experiences as a way to get out of a depression I was going through (I’m only slowly coming out of it) because I’ve heard that’s what helps ENFPs. It didn’t help. I still felt numb, and disconnected. And sort of drained, compulsive, and unfulfilled. I think INFP might fit way better, and the fact that I can be energetic and constantly giggling, laughing, and/or talkative doesn’t necessarily mean I’m an ENFP.
    I’ve never cared for politics (another thing that clicked) and was more interested in psychology and social issues. ENFP just never fit, but I thought I was simply rejecting it out of disdain for “being extroverted”. I don’t know, I’ll see how I feel with this new information. Your video was very informative, I apologize for splurging (this was more for me than anyone else haha)!

  • @That_Awkward_Mum
    @That_Awkward_Mum 4 роки тому +18

    Thank you Harry, for another excellent video! I'm pretty sure now that I'm INFP rather than ISFP, ISFJ or even a socially-introverted ENFP (well, had to rule out the possibility of being an extrovert). I read somewhere that it's quite common for INFPs to question their typing, perhaps relating to too many traits of other type codes - relational empathy, I presume?
    Disassociation can be a bit of an issue for me - mostly negative (e.g zoning out in order to "endure" unpleasant situations, daydreaming and/or drawing cartoons during boring lessons back when I was at school), but it can have some positive uses, especially for creative purposes.
    I tend to be interested in a lot of different, and quite disparate subjects, but "Jack of all trades" would be overestimating my abilities somewhat! :-( I think this might be one of the reasons why I've found it so difficult to settle into a proper career, feeling that no outcome is better than the "wrong one" (I think you made a similar comment about this feature of oppositional Te in another video?).
    How would you say these two types usually interact? With the few ENFPs I've met, or been able to confidently type, we seem to have an instant rapport. Conversation becomes very quickly animated, and we develop a kind of double act, with lots of repartee and laughter. It tends to leave me very mentally stimulated, if a bit giddy!
    Slightly off-topic: have you been out in the sun? You seem to have a healthy glow about you. 🙂

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  4 роки тому +15

      Hey Gina - yes indeed, Ne authority plus relational dominant function makes the INFP hyper aware of being all the types, as opposed to just one.
      Indeed, generally types who share the same function in either dominant or authority positions often have great rapport! Particularly when sharing the same values :)
      Heh, I'd actually caught a little bit too much sun before filming this!

    Now that I look into this, the more INFP I feel. I thought that for a long time, but eventually though I was an ENFP for the longest time, too. I DID focus on public discussions and things people just said because they thought that’s what they were, but your videos are literally life savers! The more I looked into it, I started to not feel so ENFP anymore. I was confused because I would constantly overthink, but I would still try to optimistic. I love philosophy and facts about the universe, and not so much on politics. I would CONSTANTLY daydream and get distracted(so I thought I was an ENFP) And I would sometimes act on it, but never make it through. I want to do SO MANY THINGS that are related to music, Art, writing, photography, etc. and I hate it when I have to leave out options like even ordering food. I thought I was an ENFP because of the “ phases of hobbies “ I go through, but like INFPS, I only stick to things related TO THOSE hobbies(arts, human sciences, etc.). There is a lot that doesn’t interest me(politics, debate, conflict, etc), Like ENFP’s , I love to talk and ramble! I still feel weird, talkative, misunderstood because of the thoughts I don’t share, and the daydreaming. I FEEL like an INFP, but sometimes I can seem like an ENFP and relate to it A LOT. Do I choose the one that just fits MORE? Or do I study the cognitive functions like I’ve been doing? I look into it A LOT and I become hyper focused on that specific thing and I go into a spiral of emotions, and I even experience a so-called ENFP burnout after making a WHOLE plan to future ideas like colleges for art careers, or saving equipment in my Amazon cart for song composing, but I never go OUT to do it. What do I do!?😭

    I think this is the best source of MBTI that Ive come across so far. Im really struggling with depression ever since I lost grip to who I was. I try to study many sources and ended up in the dead end. The way how Harry introduced Divergence and convergence gave me an insight on why I am so stressed having to be put onto a leadership role despite knowing organization and leadership skills, on why I was pressured to do good at school despite me being academically excellent. As an INFP, when the environment we're living in is restricting our natural functions to flourish thats when the roles are switch. Ive been depressed for 10 years because of my Te-Ne being the convergent one and the Si-Fi being divergent (ESTJ mode), its a breath of relief to finally understand and have a course of direction on where to start patching my wounds.

What are your thoughts on this?I've been depressive somewhat the last few years and I wonder if it's because I haven't socialized at all which is what an ENFJ needs if I truly am one. @@yoshidec5029 so okay, I maybe Ne aux because of how I switch up reading many sources regarding MBTI. So this is not based on CPT anymore just a general understanding of the MBTI.
      To know if you are an ENFJ or an INFP is to know if do you:
      (a) rely on objective standards and evidences to derive value judgement instead of following one's own personal web of values.
      For example: do you mostly see yourself rely on other people for anything that you do, not that you are dependent towards a group but do you need to have a basis for your decision like: asking someone elses day is an appropriate way to start a conversation.
      or
      Do you follow your own convictions and own sentiments such as: I strongly resonate with wallflowers in a social gathering. Its like me when my friends leave me alone. Thats why I approach them first so that they wont feel the same way as I did.

    The one part of my personality that I see linked to my INFP cognitive stacks that doesn't get much reflection in generalized discussion is that since I was young, when people are talking, images and concepts will come to mind, formed by what is being said, and I will make some surprising and often comical connection. I will laugh out loud, baffling everyone around me. I explain it as "things just striking me as funny", and I apologize for my bad habit. Thoughts have strong feelings attached to them, and I feel my thoughts. I love to amuse myself as much as I like to feel melancholy. One person thought I was very sophisticated, being sensitive to the ironies and nuances of conversation. This was super clear and concise thank you! I have always tested on the border between INFP/ENFP, but identify as an INFP. Many of my close friends are both types as well and reflecting on decision making, the propensity to be present or aloof, the way that Fi/Si is used, I can confidently say I am an INFP. I question my type constantly and even the validity of the MBTI (I did so several times in this video haha), which leads me to feel even more confident.... for now at least haha. That being said it it seems that there are a range of different types of INFP. I’ve probably tested on the border and even flip flopped because I definitely have more of an air of openness than my other INFP friends. It seems that The introvert/extrovert difference is so much more nuanced than many people give it credit for.

    INFP - T Yes for me, when my values change, it means something rather deep and mysterious has occurred, something extraordinary. I have changed. Died even. Not often do i change, because i am sure of who i am, and the process of changing who i am usually means that the rug has been pulled out from beneath me and consequently all order has gone. This is a most awful situation, but one that notedly is necessary for perfection. Only a very few special people in my life have managed to give me such an interesting and richer perspective of the way i see myself and reality, that i have changed that inner core set of concrete values. One being an INFJ. This happened when my understanding of morality changed from an absolutist framework to a more relativistic, christian, moral one, specifically the meaning of pastoral guidance. That was a wild ride. The concept of pastoral guidance utterly shattered my understanding of the application of love. Fascinating.

    Listening to this is remarkable because it describes my ex-husband, an ENFP, and the friction we tended to run into when it comes to misunderstandings and our different styles of doing things and especially my need for space as an INFP and how much longer it took me to prepare and execute my ideas. It did honestly annoy me when my ex would tell me what I was thinking before I could finish explaining what is going on in my head especially when he got it wrong and often times I would feel like shutting down and not continuing the conversation. So... I met another ENFP long after my divorce and ran into similar problems; albeit, he seemed more playful about his conclusions than harshly interposing like what I experienced before which I think is also interesting how that can be true in both cases of ENFPs but with different styles. It was still somewhat annoying to me all the same because I felt I had to start from the beginning to recapitulate or figure out a different way of explaining what I meant. This brings the differences in a better light than anything I've ever heard before.

      @@PegR38 yeah... I mean I think cognitive introverts are more likely to have an inferiority complex than cognitive extroverts an superiority complex (other than unhealthy Te doms, that is) but I think just because of the way society works it's sort of subconsciously told to you that it's better to spend time engaging with the world than stuck in your head... I always sorta look at ENFPs as these people I really wish I could be bc they have endless ideas and although I definitely have Ne and the capacity to troubleshoot, create, come up with new ideas etc. that's not exactly my default mode - My default mode is... mindlessly scrolling on the internet and being upset about random things I did a year ago and having to remind myself that I'm not that person anymore... so basically Fi-Si loop (???) Ne-Te loop is so much more valued in society imo - the stuff of entrepreneurs who have all the bones for their ideas and simply need to develop discipline/staying power to execute them. Fi on the other hand... uhhh... poetry? But having Fi does not guarantee your poetry will be good lol, so like ???! what do with myself lol? I feel like ENFPs have an easier time finding something they're good at that society values and if they don't have that they're typically more likely to have a good time even when they don't have it figured out... Anyway loll you didn't ask for this ramble but I guess I wanted to explain what I mean more thoroughly for... idk why but hopefully it wasn't too annoying aha

    I've only seen a couple of your videos and I'm already in love with this system/way of thinking.
    After diving into the cognitive functions and mbti I found myself frustrated at the apparent lack of interaction between the functions (or lack of description thereof). Not to mention the lack of explanation on how the shadows worked (or even the assumption that they don't), especially since we undoubtedly use them.
    I also hate the idea of being limited to only 4 out of 8 functions or a specific order, which makes me feel claustrophobic, (perhaps the INFP refusal of being boxed in).
    As a result I tried to visualize a sort of sliding scale system which was basically an underdeveloped amoeba version of this.
    (Thank goodness this theory exists already so I don't have to come up with it myself😅)
    The videos I've seen so far (along with some comments) have also cleared up any doubts I've had about my type, and for that I am thankful. I've come to the conclusion I'm too INFP to be anything else😂
    Will definitely be forwarding these to some of my friends.
    Take care.

After watching this video, Harry, I think, I indeed dip into this introverted thinking - introverted intuitive world most of the time, especially during these few months, and because my interests lie in the fields which require more usage of these functions (Science and Engineering). As you know, I am an INFP and at first I felt a little hurt, when you spoke about the INFP feeling insecure in making changes in the objective world. But then I understood that you are generally speaking about these types. In my opinion, speaking a lot about what a type is not able to do naturally can lead to a lot of insecurity in a person listening to this. I know for sure, you don't mean it in that way. Maybe you should make clear more often that any type can be as confident as another type in a particular field when they want to.
    As always, thank you for your dedication and knowledge.

      Hey David, it's great to hear from you!
      When I make such generalisations in my videos I am careful to attach phrases such as 'it is not unusual for', or 'it can make..' to present the statement as a possibility more than an inevitability.
      However, I do think I could emphasise further such nuances alongside a perhaps more explicit acknowledgement of our freedom to do what we wish irrespective of our type. I believe strongly in such sentiment and could do with bringing it up more often :)
      Hope all is well with you!

      @@CognitivePersonality Thank you really much for your fast response. :) Yes definitly, I recognized these statements. It just "feels like" there has been a lot of emphasis on the bad touch points of these personality types. I am actually very curious, how and in which way any type can improve the unconscious functions to achieve the highest potential of itself. In this way I meant it.
      It is just the case that I fall into the trap of thinking my functions, as they are naturally, are flawed and I need to change them. But actually they aren't. That's what I find out more and more. It can be very restricting to hear from somebody what you "cannot do naturally". Nevertheless, I completely see the point to scientifically speak about the weaknesses to make any personality type grow. It is just about the framing.

I also find it hard to agree with their perspective when i have not had enough time to contemplate. So then ill take a very neutral tone on such issues and that leads others to assume im also disagreeing with them.. but i need time to understand which perspectives feel right to me, which ones make the most sense according to my values and that takes time! Usually, though people just want you to agree with their perspective and when you dont they assume your being combative or unable to see their viewpoint! Not true at all, but thats what causes conflicts with me and people, my refusal to do agree with them before i have had time to contemplate all other possibilities. My need to be perfect and to alighn what stances i take with my core beliefs. That stress when being Turbulent means i then just go and isolating from people.

    This video (sadly) confirms that I am INFP, as it so accurately confirms why people over the years have found me so difficult in conversation... forever dismissing me as "playing the devils advocate" when I am only pointing out their tunnel vision, and why I so struggle with decisions. Most people that I know superficially have me completely backward.
    So... where does one learn about these secondary functions, convergent/divergent/ executive...

      @@erikvillegas8411 empathy is the answer my friend, applied empathy to be exactly, we only focus on ourselves, but if we are capable of that , we are also capable of caring for others feelings, and that actually helps us get out of our heads, which also helps us overcome depression and anxiety (typically of an Infp) because people start to care for us and then our sensible TE doesn’t have to keep wandering what everyone thinks about ourselves. Of course is easier said than done because if you’re an infp like me you probably haven’t developed your shadow function of Fe, but it is there waiting to be used, it’s basically a thing of practice and gaining confidence on this skill

    It's settled. I am a INFP. If this assessment is accurate, I cannot be a ENFP. But then again, I could be wrong. Actually, I take that back. Am I the only one who feels like both?

  • @tangerinesarebetterthanora7060

    I was wondering about how an ENFP is less likely to compromise their authenticity if they have a self image that is less steady (divergent Fi Si) and for the INFP how they could more easily adapt to s new culture when they have convergent Fi Si it seems they would be less adaptable in this regard. Does this have to with how each type uses Fe?

My energy style is a blend of Introversion and Extraversion, I am neither a true Introvert nor a true Extravert. It’s accurate to say that I am a bit of both Extravert and Introvert: and tend to use both styles somewhat equally, depending on the situation. Thinking and Feeling are nearly split equally as well, with a slight favor on feeling. Any suggestions, perhaps point me a direction that may help?

    Another question: I find it hard to reconcile your system with the rest of the systems. Because yours allows for more nuances and if you have to translate that to other systems, I am not sure that the corresponding type descriptions are equivalent. And now the question: What are your thoughts on this?

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  4 роки тому +5

      Depends on the system :)
      CPT overlaps quite well with MBTI as, while the system professes to measure how much functions are valued over a more cognitive perspective, in reality MBTI practitioners seem to prioritise what functions are actually being used (the access points) in what manner than simply what a person values + corresponding these values to the cognitive function they are supposed to imply.

    How do you tell if a personality type is lens or codec dominant?

    • @CognitivePersonality
      @CognitivePersonality  4 роки тому +4

      Lens dominants tend to be more experiential and tend to place order as secondary. Codec dominants tend to prioritise order (of the function in question); lens dominants tend to employ order to enhance experience (tranquillity of Si over intense rationalisation). This applies to the opposing stack, albeit in a less obvious way (an INFP will tend to be more perfectionistic than an ISTJ).
