This is why psychiatry is so important… the brain is so complex that it can create physical symptoms with no organic reason. The delusion seems extremely real to patients and it’s important to educate people that it doesn’t mean you’re crazy. I know this is a fictional situation but dr Charles is amazing as always ❤
There are organic reasons.
They are just so small that they evade most capable imaging techniques. At the level of neurons and synapses.
You won't fit 20000000000 cortical neurons and x10000 synapses on a screen lest it becomes the surface of the moon.
Ooh it’s real, to the person experiencing all of it is real. It’s override reality and become their reality. If someone with mental issues tells you he or she is an alien (or a robot),, believe them cos as much as they’ve reasonably tried to reason to themselves that they’re human, their brains gives them a million more reasons why they not. They end up giving up and believe what their mind telling them.

This is one of the reasons why social isolation is so dangerous. It can not only exacerbate existing conditions, it can bring new ones on and you don't have anyone else's input to possibly recognize what's happening.

If you’ve been where she’s at, even the slightest, you’d really know how happy and promising the ending really really is.

I will never not rave about Dr Charles. His approach is incredible, he knows when enough is enough, and he will apologise if he mi's steps. Being able to hold yourself accountable as a therapist or mental health professional is the most important thing as your integrity is your best tool. Can't gain people's trust if you can't hold yourself accountable when you've stepped wrong.
I went through this exact same thing for 3 years although mine wasn't psychological but actual mites from pigeons nesting in the ceilings of the building at work. A lab found eggs after doing swobs in my office and around parts of the building close to it and the scientist had bites on her afterwards! Apparently some people are more sensitive, mostly women, to the bites than others and I nearly lost my mind from it. Other colleagues would scratch without realising it and just get mild rashes. Some laugh at you and some don't want you near them because they think you're infested. I would get huge welts and pimples and scarring. Sleep deprivation and constant hyper awareness of where items were placed and what/who they touched became a norm. Cleaning the car, couches, bags, clothes, shoes, shaving hair, multiple scrubbing showers, fumigation, isolation.. I can so relate to this episode. Most expensive and exhausting time of my life feeling your skin, ears and scalp constantly crawling and itching and you can't see what's causing it while everyone's telling you it's in your head because they don't want a lawsuit. Doctors refused to get involved because it was a government institution involved. I eventually left the company because my skin became hypersensitive even to dust mites and after getting rid of and cleaning everything I had no more bites, just like every time I went on leave to clean and be away from the environment. During the pandemic I realised that sanitizer or any rubbing alcohol is the only thing that kills them instantly without fumigation. A late discovery lol but hopefully someone going through mite infestation can use that trick for temporary relief. I now cringe when I see pigeons and bats nesting anywhere!!
Dude I legit had the same thing with carpet beetles. It's a horrible living nightmare that you can't even understand unless you're going through it.

It is a fact that some people react more strongly to certain "bugs" than others. I know someone who lived in a more rural area and came out in a rash once. She told her husband she thought they were gnat bites. He laughed and said he had never heard of it. She went to the doctor and it turned out she was right and just very allergic to them. Most people are not that allergic to them.
@@anndownsouth5070 check my comment reply to the other guy, carpet beetles are some thing that everyone should know about. They aren't that common in the city, but when you get them, it's pretty much game over for everything.
@NotoriousBroadcasts I believe you. I'm not sure if we get carpet beetles in South Africa. I do remember that one year, back in the 70s, living in Windhoek, there were some flying insect that would lay their eggs in your washing and my mom had to iron every piece of clothing. Even underwear. The eggs would hatch and the very tiny larvae would bore into your skin and grow there. I don't remember what they were called, but this scene made me think of that.
Living in her head must be absolutely terrifying. I am so sorry to anyone who is going or went through this.
It's so nice seeing someone get psychiatric help and appreciating it
Years ago I was so stressed that I eventually started feeling like I was being choked. All day long I had a severe pressure on my throat, so bad that it hurt and I had trouble breathing. I checked with a few doctors but there was no physical problem. It bothered me for years and eventually faded. Sometimes I still feel it when I'm stressed but it's not that bad anymore. It was all in my head, but I felt it in my body.
This show is awesome, I love how it portrays patients in need of psychological or psychiatric help in a healthy way
Parasites are fucking SCARY. My sister had to go to a therapist bc she developed a compulsive disorder. She kept getting pinworms, which are super annoying to get rid of permanently. I remember my mother constantly washing the bedding and towels and freezing our plushies which you couldn't wash, to kill the eggs. And the entire family having to take the pills. But she kept getting the worms, she is just more susceptible I guess. And seeing how frustrated my mom and the rest of the family was getting, she got super scared to get worms again, causing her to obsessively wash her hands until they were so dry the skin was cracking and bleeding. The therapist managed to help her tho, and while she is still scared of getting them, she doesn't constantly obsess over it anymore.
It is horrifying what the brain can do to the mind and body. Scary as all hell.

Cases like this always amaze me. Our brain’s our so powerful they can mimic physical illnesses and issues so well that we become this sick and end up in hospital or even in an ICU. I just wish people were less close minded when it comes to the idea their issues could be mental over physical.

The way she spoke in the video, especially about multiple doctors insisting she was just crazy, it sounds very much like she did see doctors when it first started, but got turned away.
she did. she was seeing a psychiatrist regularly before the pandemic. but when the lockdown came she couldn't see that doctor anymore and by the time the restrictions lifted that doctor had retired. without regular help her delusions worsened, and she became convinced that she was not crazy, just infested with mites
i would guess that by the time she started itching she was already too far gone to realise the symptoms might have been psychological

This also could be Mollagens disease. I know someone that has this. Very hard to prove. There is a lot of debate if it is a mental illness or physical. Joni Mitchell has it as well.

As someone who has a hard time trusting people, I can see the relief in her eyes when she said that she knew Dr. Lavine if I had to change counsellors or psychologist, it would help with my new one new my previous one because then I know that there’s someone I can trust ❤ The relief and Abby’s eyes just brought tears to my eyes❤😢

Being on the spectrum I know the isolation all too well. Those of us who are on it value our alone time because we can control our environment.
However, we can isolate ourselves to the point where we no longer want to go out and we flip out if we do. I have learned the signs my body tells me when I need to get out to avoid becoming too isolated.
I would love to see a Therapist but right now financially I can't. People often think that by seeing one, that they have something mentally wrong with them and it is so not true.

Its really not like that
actually it can be! i had almost this same thing except i was convinced i was getting blood clots and i had to rub my legs in a certain way to help them, and i also was convinced i had gum disease and so would brush my teeth 5+ times a day, there was a whole list of things i felt that i had and i went to the doctor about it regularly but they never found any issues. the pain was incredibly real to me, even though it technically wasn’t there, and i still feel it now even though i know it’s not really there. it’s one of the most distressing things and i could not believe that it wasn’t real at first. it took a lot for them to persuade me, and it really made me feel crazy. i’ve come to terms with it more now and am relieving help for it, but i think honestly it presents quite an important issue that not a lot of people know about
they absolutely can be. I’ve seen people pull their own veins out of their arms because they believe they’re worms or similar under their skin and they HAVE to get them out. just because it may not be your personal experience with delusions it doesn’t mean they can’t manifest like this or even worse. mental health is always a very wide spectrum.
