While I think this album is even better than their debut, I feel like I’ll end up listening to FTFT more since I’d have to be in a certain mood to handle the overwhelming melancholy of AFUT. 10/10, beautiful album
the band said in an interview that FTFT was more of a collection of songs that they had recorded rather than a big cohesive project, so it makes sense that that album is a bit easier to listen to casually.
Same thing with Car seat headrest. I think Twin fantasy is their best album but I'm just not in the mood for an emotional breakdown all the time, so I listen to Teens of Denial more often

i’m not sure what i was expecting whenever i went into the album, but i wasn’t expecting the most emotion ive ever felt in my goddamn life. snow globes and basketball shoes made me cry in the same way that the iron claw made me cry, 11/10 album
the way I see it this whole album is Issac’s process of realizing that his relationship is failing and his partner doesn’t really love him, “Snow Globes” is the moment that he realizes that it’ll never work if the other person doesn’t care about him, and “Basketball Shoes” represents the pain he feels after breaking up with them
Listened to the album for the first time last night... man it was definitely an experience. It woke up some many emotions that I haven't really tapped into in a long time, to the point where Basketball Shoes tore me to shreds when it reached the end. My regret is that I didn't listen to the album when it first came out but I feel that if I did, it really would've made me do... something bad, because the first two months of the year were some of the lowest parts of my life, but listening to it yesterday was almost like a reflection on it all, to the point where I could at least go to sleep when it was all said and done. Amazing album.
Very happy to see u this energetic and excited about this album, not only because it’s great, but because I feel like the pressure of being a reviewer was dwelling on u and taking away from a bit of the joy of music. I am a new viewer and when I had watched ur Earl video u had mentioned u were battling depression and u seemed a totally different UA-cam than this video. Great analysis u are proving to be one of my favorite music reviewers. Loved seeing u smile and keep pushing through!
I like how over time Brad has gone from twirling the hair on his while he listens to music, to twirling the hair on his face. Just a fun thing I've noticed over the years. Great video Brad!
I don’t think it’s as sad as you’re saying it is. There are plenty of moments of lightheartedness to be found here. It’s nowhere near as depressing as the saddest albums of all time like A Crow Looked At Me.
Ants From Up There is one of those albums that's a slow burn. An album that's best enjoyed when you're in a vegetative state of mind, that you really need to immerse yourself in.
Ants From Up Where is one of my favourite albums from 2022. Ants From The Sky is one of those masterpiece albums, that could just click on the first or second listen. This is why Ants From Up Close is probably my album of the year for 2022
the tragedy of the place where he inserted the blade imo isn't that his lover doesn't love him back but that she has this deep trauma that prevents them from connecting, the severed nerve that would allow her to feel him. that's why he's SO desperate, why he needs her to respond to him SO badly, because this caretaker-lover needs to know that he can help her and is suffering because he couldn't
At first listen I thought that this album was pretty and bittersweet, but after seeing your reaction and on relistens I've come to the idea that it's just so tragically sad. It's almost like putting on a happy face, pretending everything is okay while internally you feel this great sense of dread and dissonance. Isaac's delivery is practically manic at points, and I think it really ties into the final words of the album 'Your generous loan, your crippling interest'. At the end it's just this amazing catharsis, you're done pretending everything is alright. Going into this album with this perspective just makes the whole thing a lot more tragic and heartbreaking.
I wasn't the biggest fan of their debut (though i still liked it for what it was) but this album really took me by surprise. I didn't expect this much vulnerability and depth going into this, especially on the lyrical front. It really feels like the work of a group of people who have known each other their whole lives joining together to make one big passion project to cap off an era. The songwriting on this album is so powerful at points it made me break down into tears on more than one occasion which doesn't happen very often when i listen to albums. Seeing Isaac depart from the band is heartbreaking but at least he went out on a bang and i'm really excited to see what these guys have in store for us going forward.
just started the video and let me guess, you cried to either haldern or snow globes, maybe both edit: ok he didn't cry but he looks like it hit his feelings so it's still a win
I wouldn't want to experience this album for the first time again, i think i'd want to experience it for the third time again. That's when it really clicked for me.
I was looking forward to this! My one suggestion Brad is that, when you find the desire, time and patience, give it another listen. I found just about every song on here to be a huge grower.
i think it'll help to look at genius annotations sometimes. haldern is basically an improvisation and mark's theme is a song dedicated to sax's guy dead uncle
tbh i like their debut album much less now that i've heard this one. they do sound like arcade fire and the whole theme of a record is basically crown of love which is funny because couple of years ago isaac wood said that he wants bcnr to be as big as arcade fire. and they could be if he didn't leave. personally i'm not sure if i will listen to their next stuff without isaac. he was one of the reasons i loved bcnr - his voice is really unique and added so much to the lyrics. but all better than ending up like neutral milk hotel or joy division.
i've been waiting to be in the right mindset for this album. I've only heard snow globes so far and it blew me away, i'm expecting this to be an aoty contender for sure. I think the neutral milk hotel comparisons are apt, especially with the lead singer leaving right after this massive album.. it feels like he put literally everything he could into this and we're left with an incredible piece of music
I think the bread or particles of bread are talking about literal crumbs because it seems like he doesn't care about the uncomfortable annoyance of bread crumbs being in his bed because nothing means anything after the person he's talking has left him
Great reaction! Really amazing album. One thing, I don’t think BCNR is breaking up. Unless I’m behind the times and news, I had last heard Isaac left but they weren’t breaking up.
Professor Skye goes in about this about Mark’s Theme in his video. That song is about one of the band members uncle’s (uncle Mark) passing away from Covid. Highly recommend his video though, as he was in correspondence with the sound engineer and producer of the album and he gives amazing insight.
This was my first time listening to the band and I already miss Isaac. Don't know what the band will do without him, but if someone does replace him, I wish all the best to that person.
I didn’t find this album to be the 10/10 that a lot of people have it as, but seeing all the positive stuff about it and how many people love it is awesome.
@@jens2049 Once, but I plan on listening to it again soon. It was pretty hard to sit through the entire album in one sitting for me the first time. May try taking it slower.
@@PoliTamer yeah it’s taken me a few listens to take it all in. It went from being an 8/10 to a 10/10 on my 5th listen. Something about the songs just stick with me. It’s a similar feeling I get from The Glow pt 2, where the songs just slowly grow on me overtime.
That theory stated that the entire album was made around Basketball Shoes holds pretty strong ground, and I find that to be incredibly interesting compared to other closers on most albums. Most albums will end with “the track that sounds most climatic” or “a good banger” but this takes the concept of a closer to a whole new level, incorporating all of the lyrical themes, sound palettes and heavy emotion laced throughout the project. However, the album was definitely not built around the original cut of the song, the lyrics and meaning of the track were a lot different and when it comes to prior For The First Time BC,NR lyrics… they were kinda shit and in places uncomfortable, intentionally so on the latter when it comes to Basketball Shoes but not so intentionally on the former. It was cool seeing a reaction of this album Brad, this album’s one for the ages. Instant classic, without a doubt.
You really turned into a brad toward the end haha 😂. I love your personality tho. Keep being you and be proud of it. Your a really likable guy. Lot of character.
I think the “toast/crumbs in my bed” is a metaphor for your lover seeing parts of your personality you don’t normally show while you’re in bed, particularly negative ones like mental illnesses because they said “this place is not for any man, nor particles of bread”
Bread song is about a girl being pissed off at Isaac for leaving crumbs in her bed after eating his toast. It’s meant to be about little idiosyncrasies driving someone out of love of someone, no matter how small the “problem”
Just discovered these guys after the hype train exploded this week. Its definitely pretty interesting. People seem very excited for this as an all-timer, which I'm not quite tracking. How would you guys say the emotional rawness being turned up to 11 on every single track doesn't come off as heavy handed or self-serious? Not trying to be glib, just curious how it escapes that wire-balancing act? Not sure if it does for me.
i don’t think all the songs are super melodramatic, like chaos space marine for example. I think the songs convey different shades of emotion through their instrumentation so there’s a lot of variation for me.
Great review Brad, some funny bits. GWH and the Blade are some of my favourites by them . I didn't feel as strongly on snow globes and haldern just seemed like they didn't offer much new stuff compared to the other tracks but that being said they're still great songs. It's at least a 9/10 for me but there's 2 tracks I'm not as big on compared to just Track X from FTFT
by leaving crumbs of bread in the bed of the one you love you're showing a lack of consideration for your partner. i guess he's pointing out how small details reveal how thoughtful they are willing to be in order to take care of you?

The band is not done tho, the members of the band already confirmed that they're going to continue. There's going to be more people singing
Snow globes is a temporal warp of a song, I set out to listen to 9 minutes of song and every single time I come out feeling like I just listened to 30 seconds. It goes by so fucking quick in my mind and in others', like I can't even begin to comprehend why that might be
Basketball shoes is the same for me, a very powerful pair of tracks to end on
1:15 Intro
1:50 Chaos Space Marine
3:27 Concorde
7:03 Bread Song
9:32 Good Will Hunting
11:56 Haldern
14:31 Mark's Theme
15:30 The Place Where He Inserted The Blade
17:21 Snow Globes
19:38 Basketball Shoes

This album just makes me want to live life. So I don’t end up unfulfilled, even though you’ll have these moments of depression and sadness in life we always can persevere.
This album is 10/10 it was a roller coaster of emotions it showed so much passion and emotion to the craft of music this album moved me in a way I didn’t expect it to when this isn’t even my genre of music it still hit me like a brick wall
truly beautiful record
This album seriously blew my mind. I could not believe how much they improved since their first record, and I am truly stunned.
I don't find this album to be that sad actually. Think it also portrays a lot of positivity. Mostly a beautiful kind of sadness if you catch my meaning.
I feel that. Bittersweet, I'd say
I think it’s really sad, but not depressing. It makes you cry but it’s cathartic.
@@craigstephenson7676that's the best explanation. It makes you feel like you're in a rock bottom but you're hopeful for a better day
melancholy
This album takes a lot of influence from Arcade Fire, particularly their album Funeral. You should do a video on that if you haven't before!
i think he reacted to like 2 songs and liked it
@@Leo-ox1rd He really love Tunnels and that's a massive W
I can't hear the influence... any examples? 🙏
I love your energy in this vid brad, awesome reaction
Every song on this album (except the interludes, though I do love them) would be the best song on every other bands albums, and they did it all on one album
This a 10 for me my guy. Glad you still saw the genius in it though. I personally don't see this record getting topped anytime soon
the first time I listened to this album I never got bored for a single second, and when I finished it I just listened to it again straight after, just unbelievably good
Concorde is an amazing song. It's incredibly relaxing, and the music video is my favorite of the year.
The music video made me cry.
common jeremy W
i’m not sure what i was expecting whenever i went into the album, but i wasn’t expecting the most emotion ive ever felt in my goddamn life. snow globes and basketball shoes made me cry in the same way that the iron claw made me cry, 11/10 album
_Finishes Basketball Shoes_ ... "I see"
the way I see it this whole album is Issac’s process of realizing that his relationship is failing and his partner doesn’t really love him, “Snow Globes” is the moment that he realizes that it’ll never work if the other person doesn’t care about him, and “Basketball Shoes” represents the pain he feels after breaking up with them
The finale of Basketball Shoes is on another level entirely
Listened to the album for the first time last night... man it was definitely an experience. It woke up some many emotions that I haven't really tapped into in a long time, to the point where Basketball Shoes tore me to shreds when it reached the end. My regret is that I didn't listen to the album when it first came out but I feel that if I did, it really would've made me do... something bad, because the first two months of the year were some of the lowest parts of my life, but listening to it yesterday was almost like a reflection on it all, to the point where I could at least go to sleep when it was all said and done.
Amazing album.
hope you are better now ❤🙏
@@spinnesplein I am! Thank you for your concern 🤗 I hope you are well too!
I love haldern so much
Very happy to see u this energetic and excited about this album, not only because it’s great, but because I feel like the pressure of being a reviewer was dwelling on u and taking away from a bit of the joy of music. I am a new viewer and when I had watched ur Earl video u had mentioned u were battling depression and u seemed a totally different UA-cam than this video. Great analysis u are proving to be one of my favorite music reviewers. Loved seeing u smile and keep pushing through!
In my top 3 albums ever already
I like how over time Brad has gone from twirling the hair on his while he listens to music, to twirling the hair on his face. Just a fun thing I've noticed over the years. Great video Brad!
Just bought this album on vinyl I love it so much it’s like a sound track to a bad ass sci fi story
I don’t think it’s as sad as you’re saying it is. There are plenty of moments of lightheartedness to be found here. It’s nowhere near as depressing as the saddest albums of all time like A Crow Looked At Me.
i don’t think comparing it to an album about a real life story of a guys wife dying is very fair
It’s not a competition, both albums are very sad.
The production on this album is so silky smooth I love it
ALSO ALL THESE TRACKS ARE RECORDED LIVE !!! CAN U BELIEVE THAT ???
Ive never heard about this band. Thank you for introducing me to this album
Going into this album with this perspective just makes the whole thing a lot more tragic and heartbreaking.
i said this on the video for basketball shoes already, but i can’t wait to have nostalgia for this album in around 10 years.
You're completely right that the album was based around Basketball Shoes!
IM SO HAPPY TO SEE U REACTING TO THIS !!!
21:40 the album was built around Basketball Shoes! They wrote it, and then used it as a reference for the style of the whole album
Bro you are so enjoyable keep it up
just started the video and let me guess, you cried to either haldern or snow globes, maybe both
edit: ok he didn't cry but he looks like it hit his feelings so it's still a win
Boiii i wept on Haldern. Had a whole ass transcendental experience and I'm not using that word lightly.
That song is insane. It just echoes in my head after hearing it
@@enriqueortiz5036 man me too, that song did things to me, the whole thing is so dense and beautifully structured, a masterpiece
Haldern is fucking beautiful. Took me by suprise
Haldern is a part of a spontaneous improv jam they did live
I wouldn't want to experience this album for the first time again, i think i'd want to experience it for the third time again. That's when it really clicked for me.
Lmao it was somehow the exact same for me, I did not like it the first time, found it meh the 2nd, but it hit SO HARD the 3rd tims
Same this album took me for a while to click for me but it’s my fav album eve r
I'm guessing the guy who explained Snow Globes was Professor Skye's Record Review lol?
ALBUMOFTHEYEAR
The place where he inserted the bladee is so good it’s unfair
I think the bread or particles of bread are talking about literal crumbs because it seems like he doesn't care about the uncomfortable annoyance of bread crumbs being in his bed because nothing means anything after the person he's talking has left him
This album is fucking brilliant, 10/10 imo
hope you're feeling well Brad, another great video
I just bought the deluxe 4 LP vinyl, I have to have this one in my h a n d s and e a r s in its purest, best form. It's too perfect.
Great reaction! Really amazing album.
One thing, I don’t think BCNR is breaking up. Unless I’m behind the times and news, I had last heard Isaac left but they weren’t breaking up.
Basketball Shoes. My God, what a way to end an album.
How many times did you listen to it though
@@jens2049 Once, but I plan on listening to it again soon. It was pretty hard to sit through the entire album in one sitting for me the first time. May try taking it slower.
@@PoliTamer yeah it’s taken me a few listens to take it all in. It went from being an 8/10 to a 10/10 on my 5th listen. Something about the songs just stick with me. It’s a similar feeling I get from The Glow pt 2, where the songs just slowly grow on me overtime.
"You get a smiley ball..... and YOU get a smiley ball... and YOU get a smiley ball..... "
Concorde is truly fantastic. These songs hit a lot hard than ones on the previous LP, though I think FTFT had more interesting musical moments.
I think the metaphor for bread song is that he feels like the bread crumbs that his significant other sweeps off of the bed, so he's been discarded
I get closer to crying every time I listen to this album again lmao
I love this album so so much. Just bought it signed on vinyl. Most money ive ever spent on music.
SNOW GLOBES DON’T SHAKE ON THEIR OWN
This album hasn’t clicked with me yet but seeing how much you enjoyed it gives me like a contact click. Now I love the album.
I think the “toast/crumbs in my bed” is a metaphor for your lover seeing parts of your personality you don’t normally show while you’re in bed, particularly negative ones like mental illnesses because they said “this place is not for any man, nor particles of bread”
I love it when people break down lyrics like this, he could literally be writing about crumbs in his bed with no other meaning 😂
Bread song is about a girl being pissed off at Isaac for leaving crumbs in her bed after eating his toast. It’s meant to be about little idiosyncrasies driving someone out of love of someone, no matter how small the “problem”
Great video!!
you look so motivated. keep it up. peace

Brad stays winning
Just discovered these guys after the hype train exploded this week. Its definitely pretty interesting. People seem very excited for this as an all-timer, which I'm not quite tracking. How would you guys say the emotional rawness being turned up to 11 on every single track doesn't come off as heavy handed or self-serious? Not trying to be glib, just curious how it escapes that wire-balancing act? Not sure if it does for me.
i don’t think all the songs are super melodramatic, like chaos space marine for example. I think the songs convey different shades of emotion through their instrumentation so there’s a lot of variation for me.
@@bigboybigboybigboybig6444 exactly, this album is not only sad it is also hopeful, sometimes happy even. Like a age of transition
13:24 is the exact same thing i did. god that song is mesmerizing
Great review Brad, some funny bits. GWH and the Blade are some of my favourites by them . I didn't feel as strongly on snow globes and haldern just seemed like they didn't offer much new stuff compared to the other tracks but that being said they're still great songs. It's at least a 9/10 for me but there's 2 tracks I'm not as big on compared to just Track X from FTFT
hey brad, you should check out the blog post they did with rough trade records - talking about the future of the band and stuff
by leaving crumbs of bread in the bed of the one you love you're showing a lack of consideration for your partner. i guess he's pointing out how small details reveal how thoughtful they are willing to be in order to take care of you?
i love brad
